Indie production shop The Exchange, also known as Bos Entertainment, is suing Wonderfilm for breach of contract related to their partnership on Harvey Keitel and Tyrese Gibson-starrer Hard Matter, which appears to be stuck in limbo for failure to pay a visual effects vendor.
The lawsuit filed on Tuesday in California federal court arrives in the wake of an investor in the movie — which was allegedly led to believe it was financing a Mel Gibson-led film only for the project to never get finished due to a lack of funds — accusing Wonderfilm of swindling it out of more than $5 million. The Exchange, in turn, is looking to distance itself from the company and Wonderfilm principals Bret Saxon and Jeff Bowler. It claims that it had no part in the alleged scheme and that it was defrauded since Wonderfilm failed to secure insurance for the movie.

Indie production shop Wonderfilm has been sued for fraud and breach of contract in a lawsuit accusing the company and its directors of swindling an investor — which was allegedly led to believe it was financing a Mel Gibson-led film only for the project to never get finished due to a lack of funds — out of more than $5 million.
Investor Gridiron Productions alleges fraud in a lawsuit claiming Wonderfilm principals Bret Saxon and Jeff Bowler changed the terms of contracts to pay themselves exorbitant salaries on top of exaggerating the budget for the movie, with the goal of making it for less and pocketing the difference.
The lawsuit filed on Sept. 12 in California federal court mirrors claims made in other legal actions against Saxon. According to a review of court records by The Hollywood Reporter, he was named in 2011 in a series of complaints accusing him of operating a “ponzi scheme,...

Mark Wahlberg and his Unrealistic Ideas banner will partner with Wonderfilm Media and Lalanne’s widow, Elaine, and the Lalanne family on a documentary feature and a narrative film about the fitness pioneer.
Before wellness was christened an industry and fitness deemed a lifestyle, Lalanne was an exercise and nutrition guru. After opening a gym in Oakland in the 1930s (often credited as the nation’s first fitness club), he began to evangelize the benefits of personal health, later hosting the fitness TV show The Jack Lalanne Show from 1951 to 1985. A longtime bodybuilder, Lalanne also became synonymous with his feats of strength, including, at 60 years old, swimming to Alcatraz while handcuffed.

The legendary haunted house in Amityville is getting a new film project. There have been a lot of movies based on what went on in this house, and now there’s a prequel coming called Amityville 1974.
The project is being produced by Wonderfilm Media Corporation and the film will tell the story of the “real-life rampage murders” that would become the background in Jay Anson’s 1977 book The Amityville Horror and all the films that followed.
The film will be directed by Casey La Scala (The Remaining) from a script that he wrote. “The focus shifts back to the traumatic murders that reputedly set the supernatural stage for the nation’s most notorious haunted-house legend. In November 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot all six members of his family in a spree killing that took on even more horrific hues a year later when a family bought the notorious property and lived...

The Wonderfilm Media Corporation announced today that Amityville 1974 has been given the green light to begin principal photography in November with its story of the real-life rampage murders that would became the background story for author Jay Anson’s 1977 bestseller The Amityville Horror and the numerous films that have invoked it in name or premise.
The Anson novel was adapted to the screen in a namesake feature film that became a cultural sensation in the summer of 1979 and one of the most lucrative hits in Hollywood history with its tale of hostile supernatural forces at work in a home in a Long Island, N.Y., shoreline village called Amityville. Nicolas Cage will rage as a big game hunter stuck on a ship with his prey in action film Primal.
Snakes on a plane? How about Cage on a rage….on a boat? Okay, admittedly not as catchy, but I’m sure some marketing executive is already hard at work on a memorable tagline for Nicolas Cage’s new film, Primal.
In Primal, Cage will play a big-game hunter working on behalf of a zoo. He must survive on a Greek freightliner after his haul of dangerous, exotic wild animals is set free by an escaped political assassin, aboard the ship to be extradited to the U.S. The animals, including a rare White Panther, wreak havoc, chaos ensues.
Picturing Nic Cage deliver animal-based puns while putting down attacking jungle beasts sounds like the best/worst movie ever. We couldn’t be more excited. Nick Powell, a...

Brian O'Shea, CEO at The Exchange, announced that Josh Brolin ("Sicario,""Everest") will be narrating the documentary "Unchained: The Untold Story of the Freestyle Motocross" in addition to becoming an executive producer for the project.
"Unchained" is currently in post-production and will be introduced to worldwide buyers at the Afm'15 by The Exchange. The film is said to be the adrenaline-soaked, heart-wrenching story of the birth and boom of the most extreme sport on the planet: Freestyle Motocross (Fmx).
Produced, Directed and Written by Paul Taublieb, one of the creators of the internationally renowned X Games, joined by Co-Director/Co-Producer Jon Freeman, who helped launch the sport as a filmmaker, and together they bring to life the story of a group of motocross racers who abandoned conservative racing culture to create an high-stakes sport -- and to-the-edge lifestyle -- all their own. The film features the biggest names in extreme sports, all baring their souls in an unprecedented fashion. They take viewers on a thrilling ride behind the scenes of a sport where insanity and defying gravity go hand-in-hand.
The creative team includes Director/Producer/Writer Taublieb, also known for the acclaimed feature documentary "Fastest," about MotoGP racing, and the Emmy Award-winning "Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau," and Freeman, whose seminal video series "Crusty Demons of Dirt" helped create the sport itself, along with executive producers Susan Cooper ("The Vow"), Brian O'Shea, Jeff Bowler and Nat McCormick and features Carey Hart, Tony Hawk, Travis Pastrana, Danny Way, Mike Metzger and Jeremy McGrath.
'When Academy Award-nominee Josh Brolin selects "Unchained" as a documentary to narrate, as well as working as an Executive Producer on the film, it gives you a stamp of approval and added value', said Brian O'Shea from The Exchange.

Brittany Murphy begins filming the indie feature Across the Hall Wednesday and also is eyeing a role in the dark comedy Poor Things. She would replace Lindsay Lohan, who has dropped out of the cast of the latter film.
In Hall, Murphy is starring opposite Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Danny Pino (The Burning Plain) in a thriller about a brutal standoff between a young man (Vogel), his fiancee and his best friend (Pino).
The cast also includes Dov Davidoff (Invincible), Brad Greenquist (Shiloh Falls) and Guillermo Diaz (Weeds).
Insomnia Media Group is producing the film, directed by Alex Merkin from a screenplay by Jesse Mittelstadt and Julien Schwab. Hall is based on Merkin's award-winning 2005 short film that starred Adrian Grenier (Entourage). WMA is repping the film domestically, while Voltage handles international sales.
Bret Saxon and Jeff Bowler are among the producers.
Meanwhile, Murphy is under consideration as a replacement for Lohan in Poor, though negotiations have not yet begun.
Scott Marshall has come aboard to direct the film, replacing original director Ash Baron-Cohen, who departed over what was described as "creative differences."
Lohan fell out of the project in May when she admitted herself to a rehabilitation facility.

NEW YORK -- In the latest capital infusion from the Middle East into an entertainment company, Insomnia Media Group has received a $550 million investment from Egypt-based asset management and brokerage firm Borak Holding.
The newly established Borak Media 7 Entertainment Fund will allow Insomnia to fund additional in-house movie projects, purchase film libraries and look to make strategic acquisitions of talent and entertainment management firms, the companies said Tuesday.
Insomnia and Borak said they already are collaborating on an untitled $70 million war epic being shot in Egypt, Morocco and Los Angeles.
Under the terms of the cash infusion, the Insomnia team retains majority control of the firm and decides the use of funds, with Borak serving as a capital partner.
Bret Saxon and Jeff Bowler founded Insomnia in 1994. The firm says it is the only independent production outfit with its own permanent studio on the Universal Studios lot.
Among other things, Insomnia produces TV programming for Fox TV Studios and finances feature films like the upcoming The Grand, starring Woody Harrelson, Ray Romano and Cheryl Hines.

IMG Film has acquired the life rights of Barry Minkow, who at age 20 became the youngest person to take a company public on Wall Street but later went to prison for fraud.
The story of the young carpet-cleaning entrepreneur-turned-convict who eventually became a Christian minister was featured in 2006 on a segment of 60 Minutes. His autobiography, Cleaning Up, will serve as the basis for the movie.
IMG expects to begin preproduction in the fourth quarter.
After serving seven years in prison for fraud, Minkow turned to the other side of the law. In the past four years, he has helped law enforcement in uncovering numerous financial crimes.
"I saw the '60 Minutes' piece and was floored; this is a huge comeback story," said IMG co-founder Jeff Bowler, who will produce the film along with IMG co-founder Bret Saxon.
IMG, a production and talent management company, recently produced Zak Penn's feature film The Grand, starring Woody Harrelson, Ray Romano, Dennis Farina and Cheryl Hines.

NEW YORK -- For his second directorial effort, screenwriter Zak Penn ("X-Men: The Last Stand") uses an improvisational approach similar to his feature debut, "Incident at Loch Ness", with much more successful results. This ensemble comedy about a group of eccentric players competing in a multimillion-dollar poker match will inevitably be compared to the works of Christopher Guest, but what "The Grand" lacks in originality it more than makes up for with its high percentage of funny moments.
Penn, who co-wrote the script with Matt Bierman, has assembled a top-notch cast of comedic performers who seem to be having one hell of a time. Their enjoyment is infectious, and while some of the gags invariably go on for too long, for the most part the film is crisply paced and consistently uproarious.
The central character is "One Eyed" Jack Faro (Woody Harrelson), who's lost the casino his grandfather left him because of his various addictions, not the least of which is to marriage. In order to gain it back from an addled real estate developer (Michael McKean), he enters a poker competition called "The Grand", the prize being $10 million.
To win, he must compete against a gallery of bizarre players, including Larry Schwartzman (David Cross), whose distraction techniques include wearing a burka; his sister, Lainie (Cheryl Hines), a profane Long Island housewife; LBJ "Deuce" Fairbanks (Dennis Farina), who longs for the good old days of breaking legs; Andy Andrews (Richard Kind), who garnered his spot at the table after winning an online game; Harold Melvin (Chris Parnell), a semi-autistic who lives with his elderly mother; "The German" (Werner Herzog), who needs to kill at least one animal a day; and others.
Also on hand are such characters as Lainie's husband (Ray Romano), a "lightning survivor"; her father (sitcom star Gabe Kaplan, now a real-life player); and other competitors played in cameos by such figures as Hank Azaria, Jason Alexander and director Brett Ratner, among many others.
Penn and Bierman have clearly allowed their performers to let loose, with mostly hilarious results. Their attempt to provide some emotional depth to the proceedings, with a subplot involving the dysfunctional Schwartzman family dynamics, is less successful, though it does little harm.
