For the awards-obsessed writers and editors of Gold Derby, Emmys Sunday is one of the most anticipated days of the year. We eagerly await the opening of every envelope, listen intently to every speech and celebrate our savvy predictions while screaming over upsets we should have called. Below are our collective thoughts on Emmys 2021 from the best moments to the worst as well as those real head-scratchers. (See the winner’s list.)
See Jason Sudeikis (‘Ted Lasso’) follows in Emmys footsteps of ‘SNL’ buddy Bill Hader (‘Barry’)
Good
Cedric the Entertainer! Yeah, he sorta disappeared around the midway point, but he kicked things off with a bang during the first half of the show. I wouldn’t be opposed to another Cedric-hosted Emmys next year. – Marcus James Dixon

Riz Ahmed is collecting numerous accolades for his performance in “Sound of Metal,” where he plays a heavy-metal drummer who loses his hearing. He recently won the National Board of Review for Best Actor and earned a nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards.
Ahmed recently spoke with Gold Derby contributing writer Kevin Jacobsen about the prep work he put into “Sound of Metal,” working alongside actors like Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci and how being in the film has changed him. Watch the exclusive interview above and read the complete transcript below.
SEEDarius Marder interview: ‘Sound of Metal’ writer/director
Gold Derby: We’ve seen a lot of stories and films about people who are coping with disability or trying to overcome something, and sometimes that can fall into cliches, whereas I think this movie rises above those kinds of classic stereotypes in a lot of ways. So was there...

Holland Taylor earned her eighth Emmy nomination this year for her performance as studio executive Ellen Kincaid in the Netflix limited series “Hollywood.” She is a previous Emmy winner for her work on “The Practice.”
Taylor spoke with Gold Derby contributing writers Kevin Jacobsen and Tony Ruiz about what it was like to work on a Ryan Murphy show, playing a character with “moxie” and why “Hollywood” is the perfect show for these times. Watch the exclusive interview above and read the complete transcript below.
SEEDylan McDermott Interview: ‘Hollywood’
Gold Derby (Kevin Jacobsen): So to go back to the beginning, this was your first collaboration with Ryan Murphy. You have certainly been adjacent to that world, of course, with Sarah Paulson. But can you talk about finally getting to work on one of his shows?

“There’s so much to unpack we could be here for 10 hours,” I loudly proclaim to my Gold Derby colleagues Sam Eckmann, Kevin Jacobsen and Tony Ruiz in which we give our initial reactions to the highs and lows of the just-announced 2020 Emmy Awards nominations (watch the video above). “But we’re not going to do that,” I note. “Instead, we’re going to have a bit of a rant session about the things that we really loved and the things that we didn’t really love.”
See State of the 2020 Emmy race: Who’s up, who’s down (‘Handmaid’s’) after nominations?
Jacobsen is first to cheer for some of this year’s success stories, like HBO’s audacious limited series “Watchmen,” which led the field with an impressive 26 nominations. “I was so thrilled to see how much the Emmys fell head over heels for this show,” he says.

I recently joined Gold Derby contributors Riley Chow, Sam Eckmann and Kevin Jacobsen to size up the 2020 Emmy races for Best Competition Program and Reality Host in our latest slugfest (watch video above). While both categories are “not known for surprises,” as Eckmann puts it off the bat, our segment agrees that all bets are off this year with uncertainty around the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Will we see the return of old favorites or will increased viewing allow new(er) shows and faces to join the ranks?
SEEHeidi Klum (‘Making the Cut’) will set a new Emmy record if she and Tim Gunn are nominated for Best Reality Host
In Best Competition Program, five of last year’s six nominees are back in the running: “American Ninja Warrior,” “Nailed It!,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” “The Voice” and “Top Chef,” with “The Amazing Race” being the only one to sit out this cycle.

The Best Drama Series category at the 2020 Emmys is predicted to be mostly established shows that have earned previous nominations, with “The Crown” (Netflix), “Ozark” (Netflix) and “Succession” (HBO) the presumed top three. Then it is presumed that perennial nominees “Better Call Saul” (AMC) and “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu) will get in, though with less certainty. “Those two are not necessarily in the top five but they’ve definitely gotta be somewhere in the top eight,” states Gold Derby contributing editor Riley Chow in a new Emmy slugfest with me (Kevin Jacobsen) and Luca Giliberti. But what kinds of new shows could break into the party now that there are eight slots in Best Drama Series? Watch the video slugfest above.
All three of us agree that “The Morning Show” (Apple TV+) is the likeliest first-season show to nab a Best Drama Series nomination this year. While Giliberti still has it getting nominated,...

“Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “The Good Place,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Schitt’s Creek” are widely predicted to return as Best Comedy Series nominees, opposite a breakthrough by “Dead to Me,” but what about the other three slots? The Emmys could return to old wells like “black-ish,” “Glow,” “Modern Family,” “Silicon Valley” and “Will & Grace” or they could embrace additional breakthroughs. Fellow Gold Derby contributors Luca Gilierti and Kevin Jacobsen joined me to discuss the possibilities in a predictions slugfest (watch the video above):

The race for Best Limited Series at the upcoming Emmys has taken on a different shape with HBO pushing back the premiere dates of “The Third Day” and “The Undoing” to later this year. Also, the coronavirus pandemic forcing Nat Geo’s “Genius: Aretha” and FX’s “Fargo” to shut down production, taking them out of consideration for this year’s cycle. I recently joined Gold Derby contributors Riley Chow and Kevin Jacobsen to size up what both the Best Limited Series and TV Movie fields now look like (watch the video slugfest above).

The Emmys races for Best Movie/Limited Actor and Actress are extra competitive this year. I explain to fellow Gold Derby contributors Luca Gilierti and Kevin Jacobsen at the top of our predictions slugfest (watch the video above), “The academy has just announced that they have changed the rules; there is going to be a different number of nominees in essentially every category, based on how many submissions there are. In the last five years, these two categories have bounced around from about 30 submissions to 50 submissions, which is well within the range of 20 to 80, which triggers five nominees.” This is down from six nominees, which is how many each of these two categories have had for the last six ceremonies.

Dacre Montgomery has played Billy Hargrove on two seasons of Netflix’s “Stranger Things.” The actor was nominated alongside the rest of the show’s cast at the Screen Actors Guild Awards these past two years.
Montgomery recently spoke with Gold Derby contributing writer Kevin Jacobsen about how much he knew of where his arc would go in Season 3, what makes the Duffer Brothers such amazing collaborators and what he’s hoping to do next in his career. Watch the exclusive video interview above and read the complete transcript below.

Best Comedy Series front-runners “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Schitt’s Creek” have enough formidable contenders between them to fill the Best Comedy Supporting Actor lineup and then some, as I discuss with fellow Gold Derby contributors Luca Giliberti and Kevin Jacobsen in our predictions slugfest on the two comedy supporting categories (watch the video above). We are all predicting “Schitt’s Creek” showrunner Daniel Levy to score his first nomination for acting against Tony Shalhoub of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” but vary in whether the reigning champion’s co-stars Sterling K. Brown, Leroy McClain and Michael Zegen will go along for the ride (and possibly split the vote when it comes to voting for the winner). I also have Chris Elliott for “Schitt’s Creek” and we are keeping an eye on Noah Reid overcoming the snub that we are collectively predicting him to endure again.

“I’ve had Emily Blunt out front since we opened the predictions center for the Golden Globes,” boasts Gold Derby contributor Sam Eckmann about the “Mary Poppins Returns” star. “The Globes have been a huge part of elevating her career … There’s nostalgia to it, it’s emotional, she sings. It kind of ticks all the boxes for a Globe voter.” Eckmann discussed this year’s Golden Globe film nominees along with fellow contributors Zach Laws, Kevin Jacobsen and myself. Watch it above.
Laws agrees that Blunt will win Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress. He notes that in addition to “Mary Poppins” “she’s in another movie this year, ‘A Quiet Place,’ which shows her range.” And Blunt has been working the parties around Hollywood like a pro while her main competition, Olivia Colman (“The Favourite“), hasn’t been able to since she is off shooting the new season of “The Crown.

When it comes to predicting Best Series winners at the Golden Globes, Charles Bright always looks to see “which shows can net three nominations: usually a program, a lead performer and a supporting performer.” But that doesn’t narrow it down much this year since so many contenders were able to pull off that trifecta. Bright joined fellow Gold Derby contributors Kevin Jacobsen and myself to suss out the nominees and hunt down a victor. Watch our entire slugfest above.
Globe voters are known for abandoning older shows in favor of shiny new objects. For Best TV Comedy Series, last year’s winner “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is this year’s only returning nominee. It defends its crown against first-timers “Barry,” “The Good Place,” “Kidding” and “The Kominsky Method.”
