The job featured in The Night Agent seems pretty cushy for a federal agency: You just sit overnight in the basement of the White House, manning an emergency phone that never actually rings. But what happens when it does? For low-level FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), it means his life becomes very complicated, very quickly as he’s thrust directly into the middle of a massive conspiracy at the highest levels of government.
Created by Shawn Ryan, the new thriller series is based on the novel by Matthew Quirk and has already been renewed for a second season. Find your footing in this dangerous plot by getting up to speed with the cast, which includes Hong Chau, Luciane Buchanan and more.

Once upon a time, the knock on Netflix was its glaring lack of transparency, specifically when it came to sharing viewership data. In June 2021, Netflix first released its Weekly Top 10 lists, ostensibly to shut creators — and the press — up. Turns out, that only silenced the creators of its hit shows and movies.
Along with the glaring issues of AI and residuals, a lingering lack of overall transparency across streaming was a major topic this spring, summer, and fall during the writers and actors strikes. With those picket lines still closer than they appear in Netflix’s rearview mirror, the streaming leader is getting even more transparent-er(?).
On Tuesday, Netflix announced it would be opening its ledgers twice a year, sharing the hours viewed for any and every title that was streamed for at least 50,000 hours over six months. The threshold is a bit lower than that sounds.

The Netflix book adaptation and political thriller The Night Agent has had fans in a craze since its premiere—gradually becoming a cultural phenomenon. And the main star, Gabriel Basso, has fans swooning over him for his incredible portrayal of Peter Sutherland.
Like a judgment call, taking on a role in a movie or TV show can either make or break an actor’s career. And sometimes, even legendary actors make the wrong call and turn down incredible roles. That was not the case for Basso. From the moment he was considered for the role, he knew he couldn’t say no for one particular reason.

This post contains spoilers for "The Night Agent," the novel and the TV series.
Before "The Night Agent" arrived on Netflix, it was sitting on shelves at Barnes & Noble. The 2023 political thriller series is an adaptation of Matthew Quirk's eponymous 2019 novel. A former journalist, Quirk writes breezy paperback thrillers in the Tom Clancy mold. "The Night Agent" is no different — a low-ranking FBI agent answers a call from a woman who escaped an assassin and together they come across a conspiracy within the White House.
That said, Netflix's "The Night Agent" is a very loose adaptation, as it uses the novel's premise and main characters to tell a different story. The novel's core characters — Agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), and White House Chief of Staff Diane Farr (Hong Chau) — are in the series. However, it also invents many new characters to fill out the supporting cast.

Spoilers for "The Night Agent" follow.
"The Night Agent" proved to be a success for Netflix, so it's no surprise the platform has renewed the political thriller for a second season. Adapted from a novel by Matthew Quirk, "The Night Agent" follows FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso). He works in the White House's basement, and every shift, he sits next to a phone, waiting for calls from "Night Action" agents in case of an emergency. Peter's first call comes from Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), a niece of two Night Action agents. Rose narrowly escaped a home invasion that claimed her aunt and uncle's lives; she and Peter get thrown into a conspiracy that goes up to the Oval Office.

"The Night Agent," Netflix's new spy action thriller that became a major sleeper hit for the streaming service, almost didn't make it to the platform's library. Most networks rejected "The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan's pilot script he shopped around, and even though Netflix finally showed interest in developing the show, the streamer had reservations about the plot structure. Luckily for both parties, Ryan's hardcore revision work led to "The Night Agent" becoming the third most-viewed debut season in Netflix television history.
The show, which is based on a novel written by Matthew Quirk, follows FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), whose job as a late-night emergency hotline worker brings him into contact with cybersecurity specialist Rose (Luciane Buchanan), panicking about the murder of her family members. That singular event launches the conspiracy quest at the center of the program, but Ryan's draft was a bit more unfocused. In the original pilot,...

It’s no surprise that Netflix has renewed The Night Agent for Season 2. Considering Season 1’s stellar ratings, it would’ve taken a high-level government conspiracy to keep the political thriller from coming back. But while showrunner Shawn Ryan has ideas about how to continue the series, which follows the adventures of upright FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), there are urgent questions he needs to answer first. Here are some of the biggest mysteries that Season 1 left dangling, from flight plans to frightful wigs.

“The Night Agent” might not be pulling “Wednesday” numbers, but the new thriller series had a very strong first week on Netflix.

Among an ocean of political thrillers that include “House of Cards,” “Chief of Staff,” “Designated Survivor,” “The Recruit,” and many more, “The Night Agent” stands out for its largely captivating plot and intriguing turns and twists. Particularly for its first half, the series did a superb job of keeping you glued to the screen. The series delivers a pulpy thriller with no loose ends; however, the second half lacked the grandeur and depth of plot. Aside from all of these things, the series undoubtedly gives us a lot of adrenaline and it’s a fun time to be with all of the characters and experience their hardships in a nation full of turncoat protectors.

Previously, in “The Night Agent,” Matteo, who was also the bomber in the metro explosion of the previous year, abducted Maddie. Although reported as dead in documents under the name Collin Worley, Matteo was actually very much alive and plotting to get vengeance on Vice President Ashley Redfield through his daughter. Diane Farr, however, set up Peter Sutherland as a key suspect in Maddie’s kidnapping in order to conceal the entire plan and prevent him from being able to reveal whatever he had found. Agents Arrington and Erik Monks were in charge of the investigation to find the real kidnapper, but they were forced to arrest Peter Sutherland and Rose under orders from their superiors. Let’s see whether Arrington and Monks can locate Maddie’s real kidnapper.

Earlier in episode 6 of “The Night Agent,” Maddie’s kidnapping escalated into a national emergency, with Peter Sutherland emerging as the prime suspect. However, Diane Farr had totally framed Sutherland to hide their plot to carry out a terrorist attack. The person Peter trusted the most, Diane Farr, betrayed him by revealing who she really was. It was discovered that Omar Zadar had nothing to do with the metro bombing from the previous year; instead, White House officials were responsible for orchestrating it. The officials included Diane Farr, the chief of staff; Ashley Redfield, the vice president; and Gordon Wick, the chief executive officer of a private military company named Turn Lake Industries. Arrington and Monks, who were conducting an actual investigation to determine who the real kidnapper was, were told to concentrate on Peter Sutherland without even having relevant evidence. Let’s see whether Peter can convince Arrington and Monks of his innocence.

Previously, in the fifth episode of “The Night Agent,” Peter and Rose came to the conclusion that Zadar was not at all responsible for the metro bombing from last year; rather, the Vice President orchestrated it with the aid of Gordon Wick, the CEO of Turn Lake Industries, who also happened to be Dale and Ellen’s employer. Peter alerted Diane Farr, the Chief of Staff, of all the facts without hesitation, and she directed them to come and report to the White House right away. Meanwhile, Maddie Redfield made a move to start a relationship with her teacher. But it turned out that the metro bomber from the previous year had planned everything from the beginning to lure Maddie into his trap. The bomber, who was also the roommate of the art teacher, showed up and killed the teacher, and carried Maddie away to take her hostage at a more covert location.
