Kool & the Gang bandleader Robert “Kool” Bell learned the group was entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Sunday night when Ryan Seacrest and Lionel Richie delivered the announcement live on American Idol. “We had a party,” says Bell. “I was here with friends at my house. When they said “Kool and the Gang,” we all sang ‘Celebration.’ It was like, ‘Celebrate good times, come on!'”

Who, exactly, was clamoring for a biopic about the origins and backstory of Full House, the ABC sitcom that garnered huge ratings, spawned catchphrases, and introduced the world to the Olsen twins? It's entirely possible that the movie was greenlit in reaction to the news that Fuller House, a continuation of the series focusing on eldest daughter D.J. Tanner (Candace Camerone Bur), will premiere on Netflix in 2016. Or it's possible that, after the success of The Unauthorized Saved By the Bell Story, Lifetime sensed an opportunity to keep the nostalgia-fueled train going.

Kool and the Gang trombonist Clifford Adams passed away Monday. He was 62. Adams had been suffering from liver cancer for about a year, but didn't have health insurance to cover the costs of medical care. While hospitalized at Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, NJ, the famed jazz performer's family and friends held fundraisers to try and pay for a liver transplant. He received help from Jazz Bridge, a nonprofit created to help jazz musicians through hard times. Best known for his time spent with Kool and the Gang, Adams also played with The Stylistics, Patti Labelle and the Bluebells. He also performed with Duke Ellington. Although he collaborated with many artists, the trombonist also...

The big winner of last night's Soul Train Awards? Chris Brown. He took home three awards — all for various aspects of the song "Loyal" — and somehow managed not to horribly offend. (Though he is still terrible.) But who really cares about the awards? This year's ceremony was all about the reunions and surprise guest-filled tributes. It was all worth it just to see Lil' Kim. Here's a run-through of what happened last night. Let's start on a high note. The Kool and the Gang tribute felt like a wacky variety show, featuring the talents of Tamar Braxton, Joe, Mc Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Elle Varner, and Ma$e. Am I the only one who finds it exciting every time Ma$e randomly appears somewhere? (Video can be seen here, because Bet loves autoplay.) The other cool/kool thing that happened: Lil' Kim, Da Brat, and Missy Elliott performed 1996's “Not...

The early leak of the Avengers: Age Of Ultron trailer was met by its studio with an air of geekery that we’ve come to expect from the comic book giants. Almost as soon as the bootleg version of the first preview made its way online, the marketing heads were cooking up a comeback. Making a gag about Hydra being responsible (“Dammit, Hydra”), followed by an official version, made them out to be Kool and The Gang. But they’re not. In fact, the studio are now seeking legal action against the person responsible for the unauthorized posting of their carefully-crafted trailer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, they’re on their way to discovering the location of the leaker. A subpoena was submitted at a California Federal Court asking Internet giants Google to produce information on the suspect. So far, the studio have produced documents outlining that they’d narrowed...

An early detail in Pulp Fiction quietly testifies to the film’s legacy. During the opening credits, after the prologue that features robbers Pumpkin (Tim Roth) and Honey Bunny (Amanda Plummer) planning a diner score that will come to have great reverberations on the story that follows, there’s an audible song switch on the soundtrack. Dick Dale’s surfer cover of “Miserlou”, which serves to prime audiences for the epic, unruly party that’s to follow, transitions into Kool and the Gang’s “Jungle Boogie,” and we can hear a player halted as if to switch records to set up that second song. That’s the key part. Movies before and after Pulp Fiction have long traded in elaborate soundtracks that serve to trigger nostalgia in viewers, but director Quentin Tarantino intentionally and bluntly highlights the manipulation to great, self-aggrandizing effect>> - Chuck Bowen...

It was the early '80s. Reagan was president, Kool and the Gang was still cool, and slashers roamed our movie screens searching for unaware teens having sex. But elsewhere in the horror realm, director Lew Lehman was making a creepy movie called The Pit. The Pit is…uh, really f’n creepy. Sorry to begin with such a brisk, un-profound statement, but that is the only way I can sum up this film. All elements are eerie - the acting, the plot, the filming, and most of the background facts. But this one is not your standard “scary” style of “creepy." This is much more of a “finding out that the kid next door has been watching you shower” kind of creepy. The final product is a fun little horror flick; unfortunately, some of the uncomfortable elements make it a bit too un-cohesive for standard horror viewers. The Pit...

Some of of the biggest names in modeling and VIP guests from around the world got decked out in diamonds last night in the French Riviera for Chopard's exclusive Cannes Film Festival party. Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Liu Wen, Eva Herzigova, Arlenis Sosa, and Petra Nemcova all wore gowns from Elie Saab couture in a rainbow of pastels. The extravagant soiree was held in an airport hangar, and the fine jeweler pulled out all the stops for its VIP guests. Champagne flowed, Kool and the Gang took the stage, and the DJ spun tunes from inside the cockpit of a jumbo jet surrounded by vines and palm trees. The upscale, tropical theme was echoed at the several bars strewn around the expansive bash, which were built like tiny grass huts and surrounded by coconuts. Beyond the cadre of supermodels in attendance, Colin Firth and his wife, Livia, arrived arm in arm,...

David Mamet owes no apologies to anyone. Not only one of the major playwrights of the past 40 years, he has been among our most accomplished film directors as well. But this nearly five-year-old play, now making its Los Angeles debut, was probably considerably less amusing by the autumn of 2008’s financial crisis, months after it had closed on Broadway, and time has been anything but kind to it. Conceived in a spirit of fierce malice toward a feckless incompetent of an incumbent, November presents a couple of days before Charles Smith (Ed Begley, Jr.) will be unceremoniously

Dates: 26th to the 29th July 2012 | Location: Lulworth Castle, Dorset

To mark the sad death of Adam Yauch at the age of 47, here are some examples of the Beastie Boys at their finest – and a chance for you to tell us what McA and the band meant to you
Live on the Scott and Gary Show
Before they became rap's biggest act, the Beastie Boys were a hardcore punk band into Black Flag and Bad Brains. Here, Adam Yauch is on bass while adding to the primeval racket are Adam Horovitz on guitar and Michael Diamond on vocals (with, on drums, Kate Schellenbach, later of Luscious Jackson), ahead of their rechristening (as far as Jews can be rechristened) as, respectively, McA, Ad-Rock and Mike D. The footage is from 1984, from a cable TV programme called the Scott and Gary Show, and includes such never-to-be-revisited early "classics" as White Shadow and Egg Raid on Mojo.

We finally find out the format for the "X Factor" Top 17. Each group performs and each judge sends home one person from his or her group (Simon has to cut two girls) and that gives us the Top 12 that presumably the American public will get to start voting on.

Australian music festival Rewind has been cancelled. Fans were recently outraged when organisers of the '80s-themed event relocated the festival from Woolongong to Sydney's Hordern Pavilion, blaming predicted bad weather, but inside sources have claimed that poor ticket sales prompted the move. Organisers have now revealed, however, that the event will not go ahead and all those due to attend will get their money back. A message on the festival's official website read: "Rewind [is] cancelled. Please contact your ticket agent for a refund." A full statement from organisers is expected to follow in due course. All posts on the festival's official Facebook page have also been cleared. The festival dropped headline acts Human League, Sister Sledge and Kool and the Gang from the lineup last week without warning, refusing to refund any tickets (more)...

Charles Smith, who won NFL's highest prize with the Baltimore Colts and had a second career acting, dies aged 66
Charles "Bubba" Smith, an American football star who won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Colts and had a second career acting in several Police Academy films, has died. He was 66.
Smith's body was found on Wednesday at his home in the Baldwin Hills, Los Angeles, said a La police spokesman, Gregory Baek.
The former NFL player is believed to have died of natural causes, but the coroner's office has not made a final determination, police said.
Smith played for Michigan State University and entered the NFL when he was drafted first overall by the Baltimore Colts in 1967.
Aside from winning a Super Bowl with the Colts in 1971, Smith also went on to play with the Oakland Raiders and the Houston Oilers before he retired in 1976, after being twice selected to the Pro Bowl.

Bill O'Reilly led off his show tonight confused why President Obama chose to spend Easter Sunday at the Shiloh Baptist Church, where its pastor Reverend Wallace Charles Smith had a history of making controversial statements, including alleging Fox News is racist. O'Reilly was none too pleased with Obama for legitimizing the pastor and was reminded of the Jeremiah Wright controversy. However, Alan Colmes passionately argued O'Reilly was completely wrong.

As much as he would like every project he tackles to be relevant, meaningful, and connected to the world around him, they aren't all like that, says Jeffrey Wright. He has other considerations in deciding whether to take a role, such as tuition for his children. "Life evolves," he says. "The forces behind the choices evolve as well." But taking on John Guare's new play "A Free Man of Color" was a no-brainer. George C. Wolfe, at the time artistic director of New York's Public Theater, commissioned Guare to write the script with Wright in mind to star. The play (not to be confused with Charles Smith's "Free Man of Color," which played in Los Angeles earlier this year) is now running at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theater."It was a hard sell," Wright says, laughing. "That said, when George Wolfe and John Guare invite you to be...

It is only appropriate to begin tonight's recap with the wise words of Kool and the Gang: "Oh yes it's ladies night, and the feeling's right. Oh yes it's ladies night. Oh what a night." And oh what a night it was if you were a lady auditioning for So You Think You Can Dance. While there were a handful of talented ovary-less dancers featured tonight, they were over-shadowed by the parade of stunning women who took the stage and promptly collected their tickets to Las Vegas. It might not have been the oft-predicted "Year of the Ladies" on American Idol, but it's looking like it could be on its dance cousin So You Think You Can Dance. If SYTYCDism's Top 10 spoilers are right (and they usually are) we met four of the five women who will be dancing alongside All-Star partners this season, and they all hail from Los Angeles.

Left, Guests enjoy dinner; right, Tamsin Lonsdale and Jill Donenfeld, along with the Dish Dish's chefs. Last night, on an unseasonably chilly evening in Los Angeles, Daily Candy founder Dany Levy hosted a Bachelor’s Kitchen party at her Spanish-style home in the Hollywood Hills, celebrating the L.A. launch of home-chef service the Dish’s Dish. The event was put on by the Supper Club. Forty guests, including actress Izabella Miko, British TV personalities Louise Roe and June Sarpong, VeeV açai liquor co-founder Carter Reum, and Izo Cleanse C.E.O. Tim Martin milled around the pool and warmed themselves by the fireplace in Dany’s kitchen, sipping Charles Smith wine and nibbling canapés and gourmet dishes prepared by the Dish's Dish and ingredients sourced from Cube Marketplace. With classic songs such as “I Can’t Help Myself” and “Somebody to Love” playing and fragrant candles at every turn,...

The life of a film critic is an easy one. Sure, the money is almost non-existent, but I get to watch movies. Though sometimes, that turns into … I have to watch movies. Like last night.
It was the Iowa Hawkeyes, sorry let’s change that. It was My Iowa Hawkeyes versus the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the Orange Bowl. For the record, if you didn’t go to either of those schools, I completely agree that this was the most boring of the Bcs games. But obviously not for me. The 10-2 Hawkeyes could have been one ankle injury away from a perfect season. Against my wife’s Northwestern Wildcats our quarterback Ricky (why can’t we just call him Rick) Stanzi injured his ankle. We lost that game, then a heartbreaker in overtime against Ohio State.

From trashing the Terminator to praising the baboon – here's a selection of the stories you chose as your favourite in 2009
Anything by Lucy Mangan, because of the hooting hilarity that invariably ensues (Wookey Hole wants to hire a witch. Well, I can cackle ... G2 shortcuts, 9 July) – Sadie Clifford, Stockport
The greatest named place in Britain is inviting applicants for possibly the country's greatest job – to become the modern-day counterpart to the legendary witch of Wookey Hole.
The Somerset caves have long been home to a witch turned to stone in the middle ages by a Benedictine monk with a flair for that kind of thing called Father Bernard. Now, however, the popular tourist attraction is in need of someone with a wider skill set than that possessed by the average vaguely person-shaped rocky outcropping, and is advertising for a living witch to take up residence in the caves at weekends,...

Davina McCall will host a mass dance routine for the Scottish general public to feature in the new Sky1 series Just Dance; the new search for the UK’s best solo dance acts, dancing duos and talented troupes.
18 million Brits are involved in some form of dance each year, so if you love throwing some crazy shapes in your local nightclub, tiptoeing through the tango, sweating your way through dance aerobics in the gym or critiquing dance stars from the comfort of your arm chair, Davina needs you.
Host Davina McCall says
“I am so excited that the first rounds of auditions are to be held in Edinburgh, one of my favourite cities. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the Scots do in the dance stakes and of course, I’m hoping a few kilts will be showcased on stage”

German helmer Fatih Akin's latest, "Soul Kitchen," is a lark, but an enjoyable one. The film sees the director of "Head On" and "The Edge of Heaven" doing schtick for the first time -- not as odd a transition as one might think from his previous dramas, which have in common a deeply felt human touch and sense of interconnection. In fact, Zinos (Adam Bousdoukos) wishes he were a little less connected at the start of "Soul Kitchen" -- his brother Illyas (Moritz Bleibtreu) is out on conditional probation and needs a job at his restaurant, a high school acquaintance is going after the land that restaurant sits on, the Hamburg Tax Office is looking to collect back taxes and the one person he wishes were around, his girlfriend, is headed to Shanghai for six months for work. He also has chronic back pains, which don't do him any...
