This October, London Film Fest will uncloak a new 4K restoration of Tobe Hooper's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," the one that started it all in 1974. Stateside audiences heading to Austin's Fantastic Fest this weekend can catch it at the fest's parallel program MondoCon. Buzz about the beefed-up version prompted BFI to pick 10 great new horror films that, while probably not as impactful as "Texas Chainsaw" with its shock of the new, will last. Here are their picks: 2001: "Session 9" (Dir. Brad Anderson 2002: "May" (Dir. Lucky McKee) 2005: "The Descent" (Dir. Neil Marshall) 2006: "Bug" (Dir. William Friedkin) 2007: "Inside" (Dirs. Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo) 2009: "Amer" (Dirs. Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani) 2009: "House of the Devil" (Dir. Ti West) 2009: "The Loved Ones" (Dir. Sean Byrne) 2010: "We Are What We Are" (Dir....

Well this years Frightfest is over and I’ve had a week to digest everything – it’s safe to say this year was… interesting. The move from the Empire to Vue West End, whilst not without the odd teething problem, was a success. Yes, the atmosphere had changed a little, at least in terms of experiencing a film with hundreds of people instead of thousands, but the positives of the move truly outweighed any negatives. My personal positive? The wide range of films on show this year and that fact there was No problems getting into the Discovery Screens this year – which in my own case, was where I saw some of the best films of the festival.
Speaking of films, whilst there was no outstanding, totally blown me away, movie this year, there overall standard was Very high, with only one real dud of the entire week (and I...

It’s the third day of shooting the low budget horror ‘Tonight They Come’ on location in the wilds of New Zealand. Permanently pissed-off Kylie Bucknell is, after a bungled robbery, forced by the courts to return to her family home when she’s given an eight-month home detention sentence. Her punishment for a botched Atm raid is made all the more intolerable by the fact she has to live with her over-bearing motor-mouth mother Miriam who’s convinced the house is haunted. But after dismissing Miriam’s superstitions, rebellious Kylie too starts hearing unsettling whispers in the dark, creaking floorboards and strange bumps in the night. Has she inherited her mother’s overactive imagination or is there indeed evil afoot between the windows and doors?

Pre-credit warning. I'm going to ignore these live segments, if you don't mind. This recap is already going to be horribly long if I cover the two-hour episode. At least I get to fast-forward through the lengthy season-long recap. Also, this recap is so darned long that I had to paginate it. I won't be insulted if you just skip to Page 3 for the results and my Bottom Lines... Pre-credit sequence. "Nice Tribal, guys. That's one for the books," Spencer observes after the Trish vote-out. But the big question is immediately raised: Why did Tony vote for his former ally? Tony explains that it was strategy and he didn't feel good about it, but he couldn't take somebody as well-liked as Trish to the end. "I feel horrible about it, but I feel like it was the most strategic move for me to make," Tony says. I guess I can buy that.

Any list of must-watch films is likely to be so arbitrary and subjective that it buys plenty of arguments, and so it proves with the Taste of Cinema website.s compilation on Australian cinema.
Its selection of 20 Essential Australian Films You Need To Watch overlooks many classics and more than a few stand-outs of the past 30 years.
Writer Liam Clark, a film/literature/music student in Sydney, acknowledges the first-ever feature length film was The Story Of The Kelly Gang in 1906. He then observes, .Since then, antipodean auteurs of the screen have been weaving their imagerial visions into challenging portraits of Outback Australia, racism, crime and hauntingly beautiful stories..
The list omits everything produced before 1971 and there are some questionable choices.
His Essential 20: Strictly Ballroom (1992), Sweetie (1989), Mad Max (1979), Gallipoli (1981), Muriel.s Wedding (1994), Lantana (2001), Snowtown (2011), The Dish (2000), Candy (2006), Dogs in Space (1986), Somersault (2004), Shine (1986), The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the...

Mick Taylor is up to his old, sadistic tricks again: Greg Mclean’s sequel to his infamous 2005 Wolf Creek, has been in the works for a couple of years now, but after making its premiere at the annual Venice Film Festival this past September, the sequel has an official Australian release date. The original is an effective and thoroughly tense survival horror film, and despite the obvious influences of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes, it has found a loyal cult following over the years. With Mclean once again behind the camera and penning the screenplay, we expect Wolf Creek 2 to be just as great, if not better than it’s predecessor. Australian horror entries rarely disappoint; from The Loved Ones to Wake In Fright and everything in between. The first trailer has been released which you can watch below. Enjoy!

In case it isn’t obvious, I’m a pretty big fan of the horror genre, and so I wanted to spotlight some of my most anticipated horror films of 2014. Between the big studio releases and the crop of independent features from some of our favourite directors, 2014 looks to be a great year.
Note: I am not including such movies as Big Bad Wolves or Cheap Thrills, or any other film I had the pleasure of watching at a film festival in 2013. For those, you should check out my list of favourite horror films of 2013. I am also not including Godzilla, since it appears on our list of most anticipated sci-fi films.

Few horror movie killers can rank among the top tier slaughter stars we've all come to love, but damn it, they try. Well, guess what, kids? Another is on his way, and one thing is certain: He has the girth to muscle in!
From the Charlie's Farm Facebook page:
Since the 1970's the world has been seen the rise of some of the most iconic killers, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and Thomas Hewitt (Leatherface). Australia has had its fair share of Amazing horror films from Patrick, Lake Mungo, Snow Town, Razorback, The Loved Ones, and of course the legend himself "Greg McLean" with Wolf Creek and now Wolf Creek 2 to name only a few.
The problem is Australia has never had a killer with the status of the American killers; Voorhees has had over 160 kills in his career and is hands down one of the most feared killers on the planet.

Ah, prom: that magical night of spiked punch, dry humping, and accidents in a backseat that last for 18 years. It’s an experience that I’m sure all of us have shared at least once, and one that – hopefully – gave us a bunch of memories. But if horror movies have taught us anything, nothing is sacred. Naturally, on the one night teenage hormones are expected to go into overdrive, there are some menacing forces lurking to put a damper on the evening.
But that’s what horror is all about, isn’t it? Take something seemingly harmless, factor in a monster, and render your viewers afraid to leave their houses ever again. I will say it feels like it hits home more when it’s high school kids, though. They’re immature, selfish, and have no idea what sort of evil is circling around them. It makes for an awesome movie.

Jeff also talks about his guest-starring appearance on Two and a Half Men, which he promises to be as risque as fans have come to expect from the show, set to air November 14, and shares his excitement at the November 19 release of the third book in his bestselling Stranded children's book series, Survivors. “Rule in Chaos”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
During the early stages of Survivor, luck plays a huge role in determining players’ fates. The votes can knock out people who barely get a chance to compete. An alliance forms and starts taking out the others, and it’s a scramble to grab a chair before the music stops. The Blood vs. Water twists have added new reasons to vote out a fellow tribe member. Instead of just targeting weak players and potential threats, the majority must look at the other tribe. The change allowing players to substitute for their loved ones creates the scenario of removing someone to entice a strong opponent to “pull a Rupert” and jeopardize their game. This fate befalls Tyson’s girlfriend Rachel this week, and it’s frustrating to watch a good competitor leave so early. It may lead to great drama next time,...

When we first met Walter White, he used the fire of a beaker to educate his chemistry students. He cooked meth in the hot desert and he wore tighty whities.
On the penultimate episode of Breaking Bad, he used the flames of a wood-burning stove to keep himself alive. He shivered in the freezing cold of rural New Hampshire and he layered himself in Gore-Tex.
Indeed, "Granite State" didn't feature the non-stop intensity of last Sunday's utterly bonkers "Ozymandias," instead giving viewers a chance to take a breath and take note of just how far Walt has fallen.
He's emaciated, he's helpless, he's desperate for company and - worst of all for the man who once sat on top of an empire - he's not in control. He's utterly reliant on unexpected guest star Robert Forster*, he's at the mercy of his disease and he can't even order Saul around anymore.

Survivor fans got their first taste of Blood vs. Water Wednesday night, when the show kicked off its 27th season by pairing up past players with their loved ones and having them play against each other. The episode kicked off with "Day Zero" — the new strategy of having each pair spend a night on their own before the game officially began.
And within the first 20 minutes, two players were already voted out. (Don't worry, they'll still have a chance to get back in the game thanks to the reintroduction of Redemption Island.) The Loved Ones ("Tadhana") voted out Rupert's wife Laura, while the returning players ("Galang") voted out Candice.
The returning players jump to an early lead, winning immunity and flint at the first immunity challenge. But will playing with a family member bring out a softer side in the contestants, or make them all the more competitive? It remains to be seen,...

“Blood is Thicker than Anything”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
When the many twists was announced for the new Survivor season, it felt like the producers were over compensating for a flimsy premise. Besides having a silly name, the Blood vs. Water concept introduced elements that didn’t mesh with the formula. How could family members vote each other out and truly compete for a million dollars? The challenge is selling that concept without making it feel cheap. When it’s added to Redemption Island and its related twists, the danger grows larger. This baggage makes the success of the premiere a surprise. There are some lunkhead players who get too much screen time, but the cast is more interesting than the normal group. Even returnees who weren’t inspiring on their original season like Laura and Monica seem more confident this time. The loved ones...

It's here, "Survivor" fans. The "Blood vs. Water" premiere is upon us and we are very excited. Not only does the loved ones twist add an interesting facet to the game -- the promos have already demonstrated how some loved ones would never vote against each other and others would totally do it -- but there are some awesome returning players.

First Curse of Chucky clip now online – Chucky, the maniacal serial killer trapped inside a children’s doll, is set to make his grand return on September 24 with the release of Curse of Chucky. However, if you can’t wait a few more weeks, maybe this new clip from the film will tide you over. New trailer for Bloody Homecoming looks like Prom Night – Check out this new trailer for upcoming slasher flick Bloody Homecoming. While the film doesn’t look too shabby in the clip, I will admit to being put off by the poster art, which looks like it was designed to cash in on the appeal of The Loved Ones. Seems sort of odd to model your poster art after a film that few people...

The new season of Survivor - subtitled "Blood vs. Water" - will pit loved one against loved one.
But in case that alone is not enough of a twist for you, Jeff Probst and CBS have revealed a number of new rules and stipulations that are sure to the castaways we meet on the Sunday, September 29. To wit:
The season will be comprised of 39-and-a-half days, kicking off with "Day Zero," where 10 pairs of loved ones will be sent out to different locations at sunset. "The whole idea was to try and get them thinking and maybe believing that they would play as a pair,” Probst tells EW. The loved ones will then be split into two tribes, with returning players on Galang and their heretofore believed-to-be partner on Tadhana. Redemption Island will return after three seasons, this time revolving around a three-person contest in which the last-place finisher is sent home.

With only six remaining on "Survivor: Caramoan" before the big season finale this Sunday, the big question was whether or not to do another blindside, or go with the logical vote of taking out Eddie. A part of the so-called "three amigos," Eddie was the last remaining member of the group that tried to dismantle "Stealth-r-Us." And yet, the majority alliance continued to be more concerned with taking out their own threats.
Clearly looking at the endgame, Brenda started thinking about taking out Cochran at the same time that Cochran started thinking about voting out Brenda. The reward challenge was the inevitably emotional "loved ones" challenge, that saw tear-filled reunions for all of the castaways. But Jeff Probst played perhaps his cruelest trick yet at this on, and it may have sealed Brenda's fate.

Time to narrow down the "Survivor: Caramoan" castaways to the the Final Five, in preparation for the three-hour finale extravaganza on Sunday, May 12. Who do you think will make it? Let's find out!
Madeline
Eddie knows he's a sitting duck and when Cochran asks him who's next if Eddie wins Immunity, Eddie says it'll be Cochran -- he's a huge threat. Interesting that Eddie would point that out to him. Seems like you'd want to make Cochran feel safe.
Meanwhile, Brenda, Erik and Dawn all talk about taking Cochran down too. Ruh roh, Cochran. Even though we are hardly in favor of bringing back oldies all the time, like the show does just about every season now, we are really rooting for Cochran.
And now we get Erik's bonkers pity-party. He's obsessed with food, he says it's like prison, he's so miserable. Oh, please. Suck it up, wuss. You're getting...

Gary George sentenced to minimum of 30 years after Chester crown court hears of gruesome murder
A horror film fanatic who killed his friend in a scene that mirrored one of his favourite spine-chillers has been jailed for life.
Gary George, 41, will serve a minimum of 30 years after he tortured and mutilated Andrew Nall, 53, in a "cruel and sadistic" attack.
George was obsessed with witchcraft and horror films, Chester crown court was told.
He particularly liked to watch The Loved Ones, a 2009 Australian film in which an attack takes place with a "chilling similarity" to the death of Nall, the court heard.
George beat his victim and inflicted 49 separate knife wounds, including a wound carved into his stomach that had salt poured on to it.
There was also a "creamy substance", thought to be cleaning fluid, found in Nall's eyes, the prosecution said.

Gary George, 41, was today given a sentence of 30 years for killing his friend, Andrew Nall, in a manner said to be inspired by the film The Loved Ones. "This was a cruel and vicious attack. It was also a sadistic attack. I am satisfied that in behaving in the way you did, you were aping the conduct in a film of which you were obsessed," said Judge Elgan Edwards at Chester Crown Court.
Nall, 53, was found dead at his Chester flat on August 30 last year. A third party, Christine Holleran, also stood trial for the murder but was cleared by the jury. Her testimony helped to convict George.
George was described as being obsessed with horror films. Prior to being killed, Nall was tortured over a period of time and had a wound carved into his stomach which was then covered with salt. This was compared to...

Each year horror fans are treated to some memorable and some horrifically bad films that either quench our appetites for shocks and scares or make us run for the exits of the theater. It’s no surprise that 2012 was any different. Although we had to suffer through such painful features as Silent Hill: Revelation, Paranormal Activity 4, and Chernobyl Diaries, at least we were given such terrifying treasures as Sinister, Silent House, and everyone’s favorite horror film of the year Cabin in the Woods. Unfortunately, there are so many independent horror films that get missed each year due to their lack of a wide release or only getting a DVD/Blu-ray release. We have all seen our fair share of direct-to-video crap, but there are always a few each year that stand apart from the rest. Just because it doesn’t have any major actors in it or...

Although it already hit stores as of yesterday, this week's biggest home video title is easily the long-awaited release of James Cameron's Titanic on Blu-ray (complete with the 3D conversion, if that's what -- ahem -- floats your boat). The highly successful fantasy re-imagining Snow White and the Huntsman is also out this week, along with the not so successful rom-com What to Expect When You're Expecting. Noteworthy indie releases include Panos Cosmatos' creepy sci-fi thriller Beyond the Black Rainbow, Australian high school prom revenge flick The Loved Ones and Lola Versus starring Greta Gerwig. If that's not enough, we've also got new seasons of 30 Rock, Up All Night and Spartacus: Vengeance, and last but not least, the Blu-ray debuts of the cult classics Killer Klowns from Outer Space and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. What will you be buying or renting this week? Check out the full...

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "Snow White and the Huntsman" What's It About? In a mini-twist on the classic "Snow White" fairy tale, the fairest of them all is pursued by the evil Queen, who's possessed by jealousy over the young woman's beauty. See It Because: Besides the beautiful cinematography (which it's worth seeing for alone), it was a treat to watch Kristen Stewart in a non-"Twilight" role. Also, Charlize Theron kills it as the diabolical queen, who's set on conquering Snow White. Watch a Special Look at the Evil Queen From "Snow White and the Huntsman" - (Also Available on Amazon Instant Video | Netflix) Moviefone's Blu-ray Pick of the Week "Titanic 3D" What's It About? Rose. Australians are big fans of local screen content . they.re just not big fans of paying to watch it. While Screen Australia has previously estimated that Australian films were viewed more than 72 million times last year across multiple platforms, their share of the total box office remains embarrassingly low at less than 4 per cent.
So Screen Australia.s latest research into viewing habits should come as welcome news for an industry desperate to grow its paying audience. What compels someone to go to the cinema, watch a DVD, turn on the TV or download content online? And how can Australian producers use that information?

One month down in the summer movie season. We got a decent opener, certainly not a grand start. Joss Whedon‘s box-office juggernaut and Wes Anderson‘s lovely Moonrise Kingdom aside, we faced disappointments. The Dictator was hit and miss. Battleship was more bloated than big. Although it was better than its harsher critics suggested, Dark Shadows didn’t exactly win over any of Depp and Burton’s naysayers. Now, with June, we’ve got an even more promising month; 30 days packed with Abraham Lincoln killing vampires, a rock musical, and a talking bear movie. All the required ingredients for a proper moviegoing month. This is such a busy month the honorable mentions are more honorable than usual, even Adam Shankman‘s Rock of Ages, that movie being marketed as a celebrity karaoke party. Even though The Loved Ones is apparently a must-see movie, 99.9% of you will not be able to see it this month, hence...

The summer season is in full swing, with one record-breaker already setting the bar, box-office wise. But yet again, this month mostly brings quality limited releases, including a few festival favorites and a film from a director who had all-time success last summer. Check out the list below and let us know what you’re looking forward to.

There's just one major film hitting theatres to challenge Men in Black 3 this weekend, and that is Snow White and the Huntsman starring Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth. Reviews are looking mediocre to unfavourable so far, but that doesn't mean it won't potentially pull off a win. Also hitting theatres this weekend is the long-awaited Piranha 3Dd, but considering that it's opening on just 75 screens I can only assume it really is as bad as everyone says it is. Also in select theatres we have the dance flick Battlefield America (which, sadly, has nothing to do with the Battlefield video game franchise), the Oscar-nominated animated film A Cat in Paris, Australian horror flick The Loved Ones, and stoner comedy High School starring Adrien Brody and Colin Hanks. What will you be watching this weekend? Snow White and the Huntsman Battlefield America (limited) For Greater Glory (limited) Piranha 3Dd...

Last weekend, "Men in Black 3" finally dethroned box-office marvel "The Avengers," with the Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones-led sequel raking in $55 million over the Memorial Day weekend. However, Kristen Stewart's turn as "the fairest of them all" may prove "Mib's" victory to be short-lived. "Snow White and the Huntsman," hitting theaters Friday, stars K-Stew as the fair-skinned lead, Charlize Theron as the beauty-sucking Queen and Chris Hemsworth as the weapon-wielding Huntsman. Will the trio be able to knock "Mib" from the top spot? Let's take a look at the box-office predictions and reviews in Moviefone's Weekend Movie Preview. Nationwide Releases "Snow White and the Huntsman" What's the story? Kristen Stewart plays the damsel-in-distress in this updated spin on the classic fairytale. Here, the Evil Queen (Charlize Theron) attempts to destroy the fairest of them all by hiring the brave Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to kill her.

Paramount Insurge has crossed a new threshold: Its low-budget horror film “The Loved Ones” has its first audience-requested screening confirmed through fledgling on-demand hub Tugg. As of early Thursday afternoon, the creeper about a girl’s nasty revenge on the guy who declined her prom-night proposal had attracted more than 50 fans — the bar necessary to lock in the event — for a June 1 screening at the New Beverly Cinema. Potential screenings of the film in San Francisco, Austin, New York, Chicago and Houston have yet to meet their quotas, but as the running countdowns on Tugg’s event pages make clear, viewers still have 28 days left to fill them. Many of the events are pitched with invitations to potential audience members to dress up in prom wear and vote on a king and queen. The Tugg method also lends itself to activist documentaries. On Thursday, 13 cities hosted screenings of the Ryan Gosling-narrated Occupy movement documentary.
