Gwen Stefani was just as shocked as the viewers on Tuesday’s (October 3) The Voice after country music singer Jacquie Roar picked her over country legend Reba McEntire. Roar impressed during the Blind Auditions, performing a rocking rendition of Gretchen Wilson‘s “Here for the Party” and earning chair turns from all four coaches. Given her country roots, it seemed a sure thing that Roar would choose to join Team Reba. But that’s not how things played out. While John Legend and Niall Horan both praised Roar’s performance, it was Stefani and McEntire battling it out to land the singer for their respective teams. “I would love to work with you,” Stefani said. “I feel like I’m in this new period of my life where I really learned a lot about country music and fell in love with country music in a way I never thought I would.

From a performance last week on the CMT Music Awards to fronting Lynyrd Skynyrd on their own “Tuesday’s Gone,” Jelly Roll has been making it a habit of stealing the show. That’ll probably be the case when the imposing, face-tattooed country singer-rapper puts his spin on a George Jones song at Still Playin’ Possum: Music and Memories of George Jones, a tribute concert set for April 25 in Huntsville, Alabama.

Maroon 5 is one of the biggest bands of the 21st century. Led by vocalist Adam Levine, the band has produced a number of smash hits throughout their career, but among all of their achievements, one of the band’s most important was their Grammy for Best New Artist. The award itself is a big deal, but the band’s road to it — as well as who they, perhaps infamously, beat — make the win even more impressive. Let’s take a look back in our latest Grammys flashback.
Maroon 5 started out as Kara’s Flowers, a band that didn’t really make much of an impact, to put it nicely. After disbanding for a while, they came back as Maroon 5, and in 2002 released the now-iconic album “Songs About Jane.” The album gradually became one of the biggest of the new millennium, achieving four top-40 hits from 2002 to 2004, the year when the...

“How do we make it uniquely ‘Monarch’?” That’s the question music supervisor Amanda Krieg Thomas asks herself before getting to work on each episode of Fox’s new drama series about a country music dynasty.
The answer is three-pronged: by having the cast tackle country classics, by sprinkling in a selection of unexpected pop covers, and, on the licensing side, by championing upcoming country artists.
“We really wanted to focus on covers because that’s a strong entry point,” Thomas says, before elaborating on her mandate: “Always be unexpected, always feature different eras and styles.” By that criteria, episode 3, which aired Tuesday night, was a resounding success. Beginning with a twangy take on Lizzo’s “Juice,” the show segued into a soaring rendition of Faith Hill’s “Breathe.” Throw in guest star Tanya Tucker singing “Delta Dawn” and a Miranda Lambert hit from the ‘00s, and you have a decidedly eclectic lineup.

Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider, who is featured in a Reelz documentary about the Warwick, Rhode Island Station nightclub fire, which killed some 100 attendees of a Great White concert in 2003, has released a new song to honor the victims called “Stand.”
The song, one of 12 from Snider’s new album, “Leave a Scar,” is featured in “America’s Deadliest Rock Concert: The Guest List,” which chronicles the events leading up to and after the tragedy through deeply personal stories of fans who were there.
The Feb. 20, 2003 fire was caused by illegal soundproofing materials and pyrotechnics — 100 people died and more than 200 were injured. Some of those fans had met Great White lead singer Jack Russell earlier that day at a local establishment, and he generously offered to put them on his personal guest list to see the show.

Simon Cowell made a bold statement on Tuesday’s episode of “America’s Got Talent” that took his fellow judge Howie Mandel by surprise. “People who judge other people are idiots,” said the most iconic judge in reality TV history. He quickly clarified his point when Howie humorously pointed out that they were literally sitting on a judging panel. “No, judge for the wrong reasons!” Simon asserted while Sofia Vergara chuckled beside him. Simon was speaking to singer Shaquira McGrath, who was auditioning after spending years plagued by negative comments about her appearance. Watch Shaquira’s audition above.

“America’s Got Talent” season 15 continues on June 23 with another two-hour episode showcasing the best (and worst) auditions. In this phase of “Agt,” an act needs at least three of the four judges to give them a “yes” vote to advance to the next round. If two or more judges buzz the act, it is immediately eliminated.
Each judge, along with host Terry Crews, has one chance to hit the “golden buzzer” and send an act straight through to the live performances. Terry was inspired to press his golden buzzer on the season 15 premiere by the performance of the Voices of Our City Choir. Their mission is to serve the homeless community of San Diego. Halsey is increasingly proving herself a woman for all seasons in her varied TV appearances and awards show collaborations, and Wednesday’s Cma Awards telecast was no exception, as she ingratiated herself into the country vocal trio Lady Antebellum for some flawless four-part harmony on a medley of two of their respective hits.
She and Lady A’s two lead singers, Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley, first traded lines on the group’s recent “What If I Never Get Over You” — a lovelorn ballad in the tradition of their Grammy-winning “Need You Now” — before segueing into the gravity of Halsey’s own “Graveyard.” Lady A’s rhetorical question “What if time doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do?” proved an apt cross-genre match for Halsey’s declaration that “it’s crazy when the thing you love the most is the detriment.”

Jessie Buckley is laughing. In fact, she’s laughing so hard during the onstage Q&a that follows the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of Wild Rose that she practically lists to one side. The 29-year-old Irish actress is trying to seriously answer the questions that are being thrown at her, of course, but a gesture from a friend in the audience — or perhaps the sheer silliness of finding herself in the spotlight — has made her crack up. Sporting a mop of coppery curls and a magenta velvet suit, she comes...

Last week, a new radio station went on the air in Nashville with a premise that’s at once wildly radical and painfully obvious.
Instead of imagining country radio as an episode of The Bachelorette — 25 guys, one woman — set on a gated island, Wycz envisions the format as something far more flexible and receptive. The station is willing to play women: Kacey Musgraves twice in an hour, while she can’t buy airtime elsewhere. And Wycz is happy to exist in open dialog with other musical formats, cheerfully playing R&b and rap,...

Gretchen Wilson initially belted her way to stardom with anthems like “Redneck Woman” and “Here for the Party,” drawing a line between contemporary country music and classic rock with her expressive wail. At 2007’s VH1 Rock Honors, she sang Heart’s “Barracuda” with a band that included guitarist Nancy Wilson and Alice in Chains, and in a new video featuring protégée Jessie G, Wilson gives an acoustic performance of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band’s “Dreamboat Annie.”
Where “Barracuda” was all about power, “Dreamboat Annie” puts emphasis on finesse.

The members of Heart, who are still sorting out seemingly irreconcilable differences, will mark their legacy with a new concert recording, Live in Atlantic City. The gig, which was recorded in 2006 for VH1’s Decades Rock Live broadcast, will be available on LP, CD, DVD and Blu-ray, and it will feature a new mix and new mastering. The concert featured guest appearances by Alice in Chains, Dave Navarro, Rufus Wainwright, Carrie Underwood and Guns N’ Roses Duff McKagan, among others. All of the guests participated in the evening’s finale of “Barracuda.

Country star Gretchen Wilson just caught a break after being hauled off a plane in cuffs last month, because the criminal charges against her were just dropped. A court clerk tells us Gretchen appeared in Enfield Superior Court in Connecticut Thursday and had a misdemeanor breach of peace charge dismissed. We're told the charge will be officially dropped in 13 months, as long as she stays out of trouble in that jurisdiction ... and if she donates...

In the second week of the competition on “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes,” with another double elimination looming, the eight remaining contestants performed two dances (one individual and one team) in hopes of surviving the brutal cut. With guest judge and season 24 champ Rashad Jennings on the panel, which stars got some much-needed assistance in getting to the Mirror Ball Trophy? We know what the judges thought. Below are my rankings of who shined and who flopped this week.
1. Mirai Nagasu & Alan Bersten – Foxtrot (Score: 37 out of 40)
Mirai felt a bit disappointed with last week’s scores. As an athlete, she’s very critical of herself and always wants to perform at her best. That type of pressure might have broken other contestants, but it lit a fire in Mirai on Monday night. Her foxtrot with her partner Alan was magical in every sense. It was full of content, graceful and elegant throughout.

For Tonya Harding, week one of “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” was about establishing her redemption narrative 24 years after she was implicated in the attack on her figure skating rival Nancy Kerrigan. Week two brought her back to her working-class, underdog roots. She performed a quickstep routine to “Redneck Woman” by Gretchen Wilson. It was a far cry from her elegant foxtrot last week, and its bear-in-the-woods theme even reminded judge Bruno Tonioli of “The Revenant.” Watch it above.

Despite the fast-paced difficulty of the quickstep and the fact that she also had to learn a team dance in the same week, she impressed the judges for the second week in a row. She received 8s from Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Len Goodman, as well as a 9 from guest judge Rashad Jennings.

Is anyone else trying to catch their breath from the breakneck pace of this blink and you'll miss it Dancing With the Stars: Athletes Season 26 Episode 2?
I didn't realize how brutal a shortened four week season would be until it got started, and now some of my favorites are getting bounced while I'm still enjoying them.
Even the athletes look a bit ragged around the edges and it's only week two!
But only the strong, the graceful, and the witty survive the ballroom, so let's get to recapping the night.
Josh Norman and Sharna Burgess danced the Paso Doblé to “The Plaza of Execution” by James Horner. Where last week's routine was smoking hot, this one was more lukewarm. Maybe it was Josh having to do double duty with football training, or perhaps the whole ensemble dancing with them was a bit distracting.

When Ashley McBryde’s debut single, “A Little Dive Bar in Dahlonega,” came out in 2017, it made a lot of country fans think back to the previous time a first single had the kind of combination hookiness and hardscrabble detail that sat them bolt upright in their bucket seats. That last such example of a thoroughly lived-in-feeling freshman grabber of a song — for a lot of us, anyway — would have been Kacey Musgraves’ “Merry Go ’Round,” which in 2012 marked the arrival of one of the genre’s major modern talents. That McBryde has her first album coming out the same day as Musgraves’ third is cause to remember and celebrate that, in country, it seems to be the women who arrive as fully formed individualists. (Theories about why the ladies are owning it will have to wait for another time — although baseball caps being laden with creativity-stifling toxins seems as...

One of the great mysteries of American Idol‘s farewell season is its failure to snag Red Bull as a sponsor for its semifinal rounds.
There’s been a “blinked? you missed it!” Usain Bolt-ish pacing to these telecasts, in which a dozen performances and 36 individual critiques — plus some pithy “meet the contestants!” packages — get crammed into approximately 42 minutes of airtime.
