Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore are teased as playing the same character for feminist body-horror thriller “The Substance.”
The Cannes feature, which premieres in competition at the festival, has already been picked up by Mubi for worldwide distribution. French director Coralie Fargeat helms her sophomore film, following her debut “Revenge” which premiered at TIFF in 2017.
“The Substance” is titled for a mysterious serum that transforms users into the ideal versions of themselves. The elusive official synopsis reads: “It generates another you. A new, younger, more beautiful, more perfect you. And there’s only one rule: You share time. One week for you. One week for the new you. Seven days each. A perfect balance. Easy. Right? If you respect the balance…what could possibly go wrong?”
The teaser shows Moore intently watching an ad for the substance injection and contemplating undergoing its cellular division. Could Qualley be who Moore transforms into?...

Although his breakthrough work was showcased in the Platform section at TIFF, the tension-filled whodunit Beast starring Jessie Buckley and Johnny Flynn actually managed to secure a place in the Sundance Spotlight section during the 2018 edition. Michael Pearce could return to Park City — a title we feel could fall somewhere in the autumn festival circuit. Production on his third feature film Echo Valley took place around the month of May in Pennsylvania with topliner trio of Julianne Moore, Sydney Sweeney and Domhnall Gleeson. A thriller genre type film based on a screenplay by Brad Ingelsby (The Way Back), Pearce re-teams with cinematographer Benjamin Kracun for a third time.…...

Michael Pearce wanted to direct a very specific kind of story as a follow-up to “Beast,” his acclaimed first feature. The writer-director found the script for “Encounter” by Joe Barton, which tells the story of a war veteran who takes his two sons on a trip to protect them from an alien threat, and realized it was exactly what he was looking for. “I was trying to find something that was part character portrait and part elevated genre film,” says Pearce in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “It had all the fun genre stuff but it was really a connection to the characters that drew me in.” Watch the full interview above.
There were a number of influences running through Pearce’s mind while developing “Encounter,” from the paranoia sci-fi elements of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” to the grounded family story of “Paris, Texas.” He and cinematographer...

The new Amazon Studios film, Encounter, is a taut and thought-provoking drama, directed by Michael Pearce that stars Oscar-nominated actor Riz Ahmed. The movie also features young actors Lucian-River Chauhan and Aditya Geddada, as well as Octavia Spencer and Rory Cochrane in smaller, yet pivotal roles.
Encounter is a gripping story of decorated Marine Malik Kahn’s mission to save Jay and Bobby’s two young sons from a mysterious threat. On their perilous journey, … well, I don’t want to spoil the film; the movie Has to be experienced on screen!
Encounter combines elements of different genres, including a full-on science fiction take, a psychological thriller, and a moving family drama that is also full of action and scary mysteries. It is amazing how the director seamlessly brought all these different modes of filmmaking together to create a riveting, edge-of-your-seat-omg-what-happens-next-will-Malik-Jay-and-Bobby-be-ok, heart-pounding, compelling film-watching experience.

The first sign that things are about to go radically wrong is Michael Pearce’s “Encounter” is a rattle. A small thrumming, really, the kind that an ordinary man in an ordinary motel might not notice. But Riz Ahmed’s Malik Khan isn’t an ordinary man — the intense actor has built his career on grand scale alarmists, aspirants, and losers, the kind of weary-eyed guys who lie awake in bed waiting for their morning alarm — so the former Marine not only hears the buzz, he leaps into action. With military precision, he seizes a Bible from the nightstand and — splat! — squashes a wasp.
One insect down. Ten quintillion to go.
No one else at the motel is on alert for an unusually aggressive infestation. Malik’s as-yet-unknown intel is that some time not too long ago, a small meteorite pinged onto the earth. This went ignored by everyone but a few barking dogs.

In the creepy opening sequence of “Encounter,” a taut, genre-bending psychological thriller with nonstop drive, an asteroid crashes into Planet Earth before the title even appears. The blinding incident causes a curious chain reaction: There are bloodthirsty beetles, crawling insects, a human infected by a microbe-carrying mosquito.
Elsewhere in a grimy hotel room, ex-Marine Malik Kahn tries to piece together the details of a mysterious virus, possibly caused by what we’ve just witnessed. As a protective measure, he sprays his body and grossly infested walls with bug spray, giving us every reason to believe that he’s assigned himself to an unofficial operation to battle what appears to be a sweeping epidemic, if the news reports on his TV are any indication.

At six of the last eight Oscars, Best Cinematography has gone hand-in-hand with Best Director: Claudio Miranda and Ang Lee for “Life of Pi” (2013); Emmanuel Lubezki and Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity” (2014); Lubezki and Alejandro G. Inarritu for both “Birdman” (2015) and “The Revenant” (2016); Linus Sandgren and Damien Chazelle for “La La Land” (2017); and Cuaron doing double duty on “Roma” (2019). Will that trend hold true this year? (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Cinematography.)

Ever since it was first announced as one of the selections at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to get to see Promising Young Woman from writer/director Emerald Fennell, and thankfully, it did not disappoint. There’s bound to be a ton of controversy surrounding the film, making it easily the most divisive project to be released throughout 2020, but I also think what Fennell and company have created with Promising Young Woman is truly one of the standout cinematic experiences of the year that might be a bit messy at times, but will definitely linger with you for a long time after. I haven’t been able to shake it for weeks now myself.

Over a decade later, Carey Mulligan may finally be able to return to an Oscars ceremony as a nominee with “Promising Young Woman.”
In 2009, the London-born performer delivered her breakout role in Lone Scherfig’s “An Education” and mustered an Oscar nomination for best actress. Since then, she’s been caught in what I call “one-nomination purgatory” – a place where talented actors are held and, despite awards-worthy turns, can’t muster enough buzz to nab their second nomination. Since 2010, she’s missed out on mentions for “Shame,” “Inside Llewyn Davis” and “Wildlife,” garnering outstanding reviews but coming up short. Could this finally be her invitation back? The reception and reviews so far indicate it could be.
As Cassandra Thomas, a smart and cunning woman righting the wrongs of her past, the 35-year-old is sensationally equipped and compelling in delivering one of her strongest turns yet. The film and performance check...

British-Malaysian actor Henry Golding has carved a space in Hollywood as a debonair heartthrob who can bring old world charm to contemporary mainstream movies. From his turn as a moneyed groom-to-be in the 2018 smash “Crazy Rich Asians” to his Hitchcockian matinee idol in “A Simple Favor” that same year, Golding brings a measure of class to every project he graces. And, with just a handful of screen credits, there haven’t been many. It’s hard to take your eyes off him, and that’s not just because he’s in nearly every shot of this slice of gay soul searching as an expat returning to his roots in Vietnam.

Glen Basner lives to make deals.
Be it Toronto or Cannes, Sundance or Afm, you’ll find the FilmNation founder in the throes of negotiations over pricing and marketing plans, schmoozing and working every angle to nail the best pact. Director Armando Iannucci, who worked with FilmNation on the upcoming “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” recalls seeing Basner in action after he presented the Charles Dickens adaptation to potential buyers at the 2018 Berlin Film Festival.
“He was running from booth to booth, having all these conversations, and he just kind of lit up with this infectious smile,” says Iannucci. “Fundamentally, all of the things he’s doing on the business side are borne out of a love of film. That what makes him so good at what he does.”

Scavenger’s Song: Johnson’s Chilling, Stylized Sophomore Feature
Opening with a brooding, atmospheric ambience as we drift through a throbbing drug bust set to an electric synth score, Gerard Johnson’s exciting sophomore film, Hyena, recalls early 80’s efforts from the likes of Abel Ferrara or Michael Mann, an exciting concoction of style and tone overlaying familiar narrative tropes. Though the film doesn’t quite maintain this level of elation, dipping into a customary groove that reveals little outside of the inevitable consequences that accompany the actions we see here, Johnson proves to be a promisingly abrasive new voice coming out of the UK. Utilizing the talents of DoP Benjamin Kracun (For Those in Peril, 2013), and bringing along composer Matt Johnson and editor Ian Davies from his 2009 debut, serial killer film Tony, the end result is an unsettling nightmare sporting an arresting energy often absent from trajectories so recognizable.

Hyena is a gritty, brutal crime drama, but sadly, not one that really works.
Gerald Johnson's London crime drama Hyena stretches the definition of 'good copper' by some distance. Our anti-hero, Michael Logan, is not morally upstanding as much as he is competent and the film is open about that from the very beginning.
Michael (Peter Ferdinando) is the corrupt, substance abusing leader of a corrupt, substance abusing task force in a corrupt, mostly substance abusing Met. After he sees a contact murdered in front of him by a pair of Albanian brothers called the Kabashis, (Orli Shuka and Gjevat Kelmendi) who have designs on the London drug trade, his chickens all come home to roost at once.
Aside from being reassigned to the command of former partner David Knight (Stephen Graham) and having Internal Affairs' Taylor (Richard Dormer) breathing down his neck, Michael realises that the Albanians are also trafficking people,...

Fish Out of Water: Wright’s Debut a Visually Arresting, Moody Allegory
The mythological significance of the sea inflects and infects Paul Wright’s somber directorial debut, For Those in Peril, a dark allegory which takes its title from a line in a traditional naval hymn. Related with a heavy earnestness, there’s nary a break from the staunchly bleak tone, a saturation that tends to cast its final flight of fancy moment into mind-numbing dubiousness rather than landsliding into poignancy. Be that as it may, Wright’s visually arresting debut is often a poetically charged portrait of a pariah in an emotional wasteland of a community’s dismissive cruelty.
The sole survivor of a fishing boat accident that claimed the lives of five others, including his own older brother, we meet Aaron (George Mackay) preparing for his sibling’s funeral with the help of his mother, Cathy (Kate Dickie...
