Miriam Margolyes, who played Professor Sprout in the “Harry Potter” film franchise, is lending her voice to a new kids project titled “Badjelly,” Variety can confirm.
Based on the Spike Milligan children’s book “Badjelly the Witch: A Fairy Story,” the animated series will bring to life Milligan’s original tale about two siblings who go searching for a lost cow – and stumble upon a cast of magical creatures.
Margolyes is set to play Badjelly in the project, who is described as “the wickedest witch in all the world.” When she bumps into brother and sister Tim and Rose on their adventures in the great black forest high jinks ensue. Tim will be voiced by Malachi Hall (“The Flatshare”) while Ava Diakhaby (“Shortland Street”) plays Rose.
The 13-part series is aimed at 7-11 year old and is set for delivery in 2025. The show is already in production.

This Wellington Paranormal article contains no spoilers.
Wellington Paranormal does for cops what What We Do In the Shadows does for vampires: not really much. People didn’t offer their throats to Staten Island bloodsuckers, asking to be made immortal after the FX series, and there won’t be a run on the New Zealand police academy any time soon, even after any cadets learn there is a paranormal unit in some of the local precincts. Hardly any law officer has even visited the basement office of the paranormal unit at the Wellington station. It’s not because it’s such a tightly guarded secret. They just have no interest. The series brilliantly lampoons the entire force in farce.
The cops at the center of Wellington Paranormal are the most normal paranormal investigators ever assigned to cover “extraterresticle” activity. They treat supernatural law enforcement like it’s the most natural thing imaginable.

Family reunions always seem to reveal skeletons in the closet, and Reunion is no different. What we get with this new horror though is a mystery and a ghost story that feels original and is well worth checking out.

"This Christmas, give something only you can give." Nothing like a big warm holiday hug. Coca Cola Great Britain has unveiled their annual holiday commercial and this one is special - primarily because it's made by Oscar-winning New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi. The "Coca-Cola Christmas Commercial 2020" is a 2-1/2 min adventure about a hard-working father who travels the globe to deliver his daughter's letter to Santa Claus at the North Pole. The spot stars Kiwi actor Cohen Holloway. Coca Cola states: "Our new advert reflects the real magic of Christmas—our greater appreciation for loved ones, a sense of community and our need to be present with each other this Christmas, above all else." This ad spot just proves that even when making a TV commercial selling sugar water, Taika is still the best. Such a wonderfully talented filmmaker. Thanks to our ...

"You guys shot the wrong man, didn't you?!" Dark Star Films has debuted a new official US trailer for the New Zealand dark comedy called Lowdown Dirty Criminals, made by filmmaker Paul Murphy (Second Hand Wedding and Love Birds). This already opened in New Zealand & Australia a few months ago, and should make its way to America sooner than later. Two wannabe gangsters find themselves in a hilariously off-kilter predicament when a botched job leaves them the target of the underworld’s finest. It's closest in tone and style to Guy Ritchie's 1998 film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, with a Kiwi edge. The film's ensemble cast includes James Rolleston, Samuel Austin, Scott Wills, Min Kim, Cohen Holloway, Robbie Magasiva, and Rebecca Gibney as "uber gangster The Upholsterer". A crime caper that tells the tale of two naïve young men searching for a better life... through crime. Ha ha.

‘Tenet.’
Exhibitors are anticipating a blockbuster opening this Thursday, even with caps on seating capacity, for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet after a sizable turnout for paid previews last weekend.
Warner Bros’ international spy thriller starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh played on more than 500 screens.
The distributor imposed a worldwide block on figures for the previews, which will be folded into the opening weekends in about 70 markets, but exhibitors’ feedback was highly positive.
Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace Gm Alex Temesvari tells If: “We were extremely happy with the weekend business, which met my high expectations. The Orpheum had its best trading weekend since reopening by a wide margin.”
The audience at his venue, which is operating at about 30 per cent capacity, spanned a wide demographic, from teenagers to seniors.

‘The Personal History of David Copperfield.’
The floodgates opened last weekend with more than a dozen new releases led by The Personal History of David Copperfield, plus several re-issues as more cinemas turned the lights back on.
However the grosses per title reflect the “new normal,” with limited seating capacity and reduced sessions.
The safe distancing rules mean there is a cap of 20 people per session in Victoria, between 20 per cent and 45 per cent in New South Wales and 50 per cent in South Australia.
The top 20 titles racked up nearly $2.5 million, up 251 per cent on the previous frame, according to Numero.
Released by Roadshow, Armando Ianucci’s The Personal History of David Copperfield, a re-imagination of the Charles Dickens novel starring Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi and Ben Whishaw, rang up $330,000 on 203 screens and $376,000 including previews.

Mild, mellow and as life-affirming as a soft fall of springtime New Zealand rain, Hamish Bennett’s charming if overfamiliar debut feature “Bellbird” — so named after a species of avian indigenous to the region, which Captain Cook reportedly described as having a song “like small bells, exquisitely tuned” — is a fondly bittersweet tribute to the rural Northland of the director’s childhood.
A portrait of a taciturn farmer father and his dutiful but indecisive son as they try to find a means of communication in the aftermath of bereavement, the film skirts dangerously close to indie dramedy cliché at times. But some astute, understated writing and warm, witty supporting turns rescue the story from tweeness, while the fresh-faced camerawork of Dp Grant McKinnon, and the deep wellspring of affection that Bennett clearly has for every one of his flawed but fiercely decent characters make it.

Scandinavian sales outfit LevelK has acquired world sales rights to New Zealand comedy-drama “Bellbird,” the feature debut of Hamish Bennett.
Produced by Orlando Stewart for Stella Maris Productions and Catherine Fitzgerald for Blueskin Films, Bellbird tells the story of a dairy farmer struggling to cope with the sudden death of his beloved wife, and the gradual bond he builds with his gentle only son and the local community. The movie, written by Bennett, is set over four seasons in a modest Northland dairy farm.
“The characters of ‘Bellbird’ were inspired by my childhood neighbours in the small rural Northland community of Tauraroa…” said Bennett whose last short, “Rose & Beth,” won prizes in New Zealand.
“You don’t see many outward displays of affection or emotion, (but) the love, the loyalty, the reliance – it can all be found in the little moments, buried under the layers of cheeky banter and cow shit,...

"Tell me who it was!" Ace Entertainment and Ascendant Releasing have debuted an official trailer for the indie action film The Stolen, starring Alice Eve as a woman who goes off on her own dangerous adventure to find and save her kidnapped child. Set in the 1800s in New Zealand, Eve stars as the wife of a farmer who is murdered. She's then forced to join a convoy of ex-convicts, whores, hustlers and a native Maori warrior heading for the rough mining town of Gold Town, where she hopes to find her son and bring him home. The film's full cast includes Jack Davenport, Graham McTavish, Richard O'Brien, Stan Walker, Cohen Holloway, Glen Levy, Gillian MacGregor, and Stig Eldred. This doesn't look so bad, but it also just doesn't look good either. Alice Eve tries so hard but just isn't a great actress, and the rest looks forgettable. Here's the...

Throughout his short and blistering career, Taika Waititi has served up quirky indie romance in Eagle Vs. Shark and cast blinding light on a house filled with vampires in the really rather excellent horror comedy, What We Do In The Shadows.
It’s enough to give ardent Marvelites a tease of what’s to come, too, considering that the New Zealand filmmaker is set to helm next year’s Thor: Raganrok. But before whisking moviegoers back to the decadent halls of Asgard, Waititi is on the verge of releasing a much more intimate adventure in Hunt For the Wilderpeople.
Lifting inspiration from Barry Crump’s acclaimed 1995 adventure novel Wild Pork And Watercressa, Hunt for the Wilderpeople places Sam Neill in the shoes of Hec, a grizzled and curmudgeonly foster uncle who reluctantly agrees to take care of Ricky, a stubborn city kid (Julian Dennison). After premiering at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, thankfully one doesn’t have to wait long for Taika Waititi‘s What We Do in the Shadows follow-up Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Set for a U.S. release in June, the film features an unlikely pair (Sam Neill and newcomer Julian Dennison) as they’re on the run from the government following a misunderstanding. Today we now have a thrilling new trailer for the adventure comedy, one of our summer must-sees.
We said in our review, “If one imagines a real-life version of Up with a bit of Thelma & Louise thrown in, they get Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Taika Waititi‘s charming on-the-run adventure comedy. During downtime between gothic hit What We Do in the Shadows and his first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with next year’s Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi carved out time to direct an atypical adventure film in the form of Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
Premiering at Sundance to rave reviews, today heralds the arrival of the film’s first full trailer, and it’s one that places a laser focus on Sam Neill and Julian Dennison’s unlikely duo. Neill, sporting a beard and a gruff attitude, takes point as Nec, the curmudgeonly foster uncle that is left caring for Dennison’s unruly young city kid.
One major misunderstanding later and Dennison and Neill’s mismatched twosome are off on the run from government officials.
Hunter for the Wilderpeople will be based on Barry Crump’s acclaimed adventure novel, Wild Pork And Watercress. First published in 1995, Crump’s...

He helped direct one of last year’s funniest films with What We Do in the Shadows and now before Taika Waititi takes on Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, he snuck in another feature. Hunt for the Wilderpeople features an unlikely pair (Sam Neill and newcomer Julian Dennison) as they’re on the run from the government following a misunderstanding. Premiering at Sundance to strong reviews, including our own, the first full trailer hailing from New Zealand, has now landed.

This film overflows with Kiwi humor that, unfortunately, will be lost on many audiences. New director Mike Wallis brings you something completely different in the spaghetti western romantic comedy .Good for Nothing.. If you think it.s so easy, try it. Inge Rademeyer plays English woman of breeding Isabella Montgomery, on the way to her father.s ranch. As she disembarks from the stagecoach a funny thing happens. .The Man. (Cohen Holloway..Boy. and .Eagle vs. Shark.) shows up and falls in love with her. We know it is true love, because he kills everybody in the room who has lain eyes on the luscious and oh so vulnerable Inge. As the film goes on, more men lay eyes on...

Title: Good For Nothing Director: Mike Wallis Starring: Cohen Holloway, Inge Rademeyer, Richard Thompson, Jon Pheloung, Toby Leach, Toa Waaka A Kiwi-shot Western which details the odd, thawing relationship between a vulnerable kidnapped woman and her uncouth captor, “Good For Nothing” is a movie which tells a pretty simple story but leaves its quiet mark — to the extent that it imparts one — chiefly via the unfussy naturalistic performances of its leads. Lacking much in the way of narrative dynamism, the film should chiefly appeal to genre enthusiasts. A well-off Englishwoman on the way to her uncle’s frontier ranch in the wake of the death of her father, Isabella Montgomery (Inge Rademeyer) is forewarned that this “isn’t [ Read More ]...

Told with gusto, style, and respect, Good For Nothing displays a becoming modesty for an old-school Western that features a murdering, would-be rapist as a heroic character. When it comes to Westerns, so many tropes have been etched into our collective cinematic memory that the biggest challenge facing modern filmmakers is deciding which stereotypes to celebrate, critique, satirize, and / or stand on end. Writer/director Mike Wallis has chosen wisely. The male lead character is a man with no name. Unlike Clint Eastwood, however, this Man (Cohen Holloway) is not motivated by money or revenge; he's motivated by his penis, which fails to respond when he attempts to "poke" -- as he not so charmingly refers to rape -- an unwilling woman. The female...

Written, directed and produced by Mike Wallis (animation coordinator on “Avatar” and “The Day the Earth Stood Still”), “Good for Nothing” is inspired by spaghetti Westerns like those of Sergio Leone (“A Fistful of Dollars,” “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”). In what seems an unlikely stand-in for the American Southwest, where the film is set, “Good for Nothing” is the first Western filmed in New Zealand.
The movie stars newcomer Inge Rademeyer (another producer of the film and Wallis’ wife) as Isabella Montgomery, a strong-willed Englishwoman who has come to the American Southwest and is abducted en route to her uncle’s ranch. With her escorts murdered by her abductor, known only as “The Man” (Cohen Holloway), Montgomery is held for ransom.

But those plans are derailed by a bad hombre (Cohen Holloway) who blows away her chaperones and claims her as 'bounty'. But after having 'performance' issues, the hombre sets out to seek treatment from local Chinese and Indian medicine men while dodging an approaching posse..."
"Good For Nothing" was filmed in New Zealand's Bendigo goldfields, Cromwell and on the Kingston Flyer steam train in Central Otago and Mackenzie Country.
"The idea of this film was that it is like a 'spaghetti' western," said Wallis, "but it is shot in New Zealand rather than Italy so it is a 'pavlova' western.
