As Hollywood consistently churns out box office hits, it’s common for successful films to spawn franchises in pursuit of continued success through sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and many other ways. However, some of these sequels don’t always stay up to the mark. Following are several examples of movies where Hollywood’s pursuit of extending classic hits led to disappointing sequels.
Back to The Future Part II
Released in 1985, the original Back to The Future stood out as one of the defining blockbusters of the 1980s with its enduring legacy spanning nearly four decades as one of the most cherished and influential films of all time.

The "Back to the Future" films are incredibly beloved, with a unique impact on pop culture that's almost hard to quantify. Robert Zemeckis' 1985 film "Back to the Future" spawned two sequels, a video game, and even a musical, as well as providing the genesis for the adult cartoon "Rick and Morty." The first movie is a zany tale of down-on-his-luck teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) who ends up traveling through time in a DeLorean with the help of mad scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), wreaking havoc on the timeline and engaging in all kinds of silly time travel tropes along the way. The second film is a direct continuation of the first, with time travel to 1955 and 2015 to try and create the best future for Marty and his family. It's not as beloved as the first movie, but folks are still pretty fond of it. Then there's the "Back to the Future Part III,...

We all know what happened after 2004’s Mean Girls – Regina became a lacrosse champ, Karen used her psychic boobs to present the morning weather announcements, Gretchen co-opted the Cool Asians, and Cady floated in a newly repaired girl world… while keeping a beady eye on any emerging Young Plastics set to reinstate the old hierarchy. Now there’s a film of the musical of the film.
But to the actors who played them in the original? Oscar nominations, pop careers, Hallmark Christmas movies, prestige streaming dramas, LGBT+ firsts, and much more.

The concept of time travel, though usually lumped in with science fiction, is actually far closer to fantasy. The notion is rooted in nostalgia, the collective unconscious assumption that there was such a thing as "the good old days." It's also borne out of an interest in history, which as "The Holdovers" so recently and succinctly stated, is really an interest in knowing more about ourselves. While actual time travel will likely never exist, a particular form of it has already existed for over 100 years: cinema.
If poring through film history allows a viewer to ostensibly travel through time, then it only follows that cinema would be a natural tool to examine history and time travel as well. When co-writer and producer Bob Gale hit upon his father's old high school yearbook one day and wondered if he and his father would've been friends (let alone like each other) had...

Countdown number-wrangler Carol Vorderman will tell you that she appeared on the very first celebrity version of a British TV show in December 1998, but Carol Vorderman has been getting high on her own supply. 18 months before she gave her Cher in a 1998 episode of Celebrity Stars in Their Eyes, Wendy Richard and Todd Carty from EastEnders graced episode one of Celebrity Ready Steady Cook, and they’d appreciate Vorders giving it a bit less of all that, thank you.
The point being: celebrity versions of TV shows are mostly dross. Not being able to choose from the top drawer of fame, they generally feature the packing peanuts of the TV world. These shows use what might be described as a homeopathic definition of ‘celebrity’, in that this glass of water has a better chance of remembering who any of the cast are than I do.

This review contains spoilers for the show's visual surprises.
The original 1985 "Back to the Future" movie is a fantasy. It's a teen time travel fantasy about knocking sense into your disappointing parents and ensuring they grow into better people. It's a fantasy where "If You Put Your Mind To It, You Can Accomplish Anything" pays dividends as an adage. It's also a visual effects dream — courtesy of its director-screenwriter Robert Zemeckis and Ilm — that rode the waves of critical and commercial success, two sequels, pop culture homages, and now a "Back to the Future: The Musical."
The famed DeLorean time machine skids onto Broadway's Winter Garden stage, as the West End version dances on. Within a few blinding flashes, the vehicle pops up like magic thanks to Chris Fisher's illusion work and Tim Lutkin & Hugh Vanstone's tactful lighting. Its 3D scan designed by Tim Hatley, the DeLorean feels alive.

Busted have announced a greatest hits reunion tour to celebrate their 20th anniversary.
On Thursday (23 March), the band posted a video on Instagram informing fans that they are back for a special anniversary tour.
“Busted is back,” they wrote in the caption for the video, before informing fans that tickets will go on sale from Friday 31 March.
The British boy band were hugely famous in the noughties for pop-punk hits such as “Year 3000”, “What I Go To School For” and “Crashed The Wedding”.
The group, consisting of Charlie Simpson, Matt Willis and James Bourne, were teens in Busted’s early days, and are now in their late 30s.
Although they may not have been together as Busted for a while, the group members have been very busy for the last 20 years.
So what exactly have Busted been up to for the last two decades?

Eric Stoltz being cast as Marty McFly and spending several weeks filming the role before Michael J. Fox replaced him is easily one of the most widely-known pieces of "Back to the Future" trivia there is and for obvious reasons. But as fascinating as it is to wonder what might've been had Stoltz gotten to drive Emmett "Doc" Brown's time-traveling DeLorean all the way to the finish line, he's far from the only "What if?" bit of casting when it comes to that McFly kid.
With Robert Zemeckis directing hot off his 1984 breakout film "Romancing the Stone" and Steven Spielberg producing, "Back to the Future" had its pick of up-and-coming actors to cast as Marty. With the news that singer-songwriter Foxes will make her TV acting debut in an upcoming episode of Doctor Who, Digital Spy brings you everything you need to know about the vulpine-named musical starlet.
Doctor Who: Singer Foxes to star and perform in series 8
So who is Foxes, anyway?
Foxes is a 25-year-old Londoner (originally from Southampton) whose mum knows her as Louisa Rose Allen. She uses the stage name Foxes so she doesn't get muddled up with Lily Rose Allen, and because her mum had a weird dream about foxes one time.
She confesses to writing "songs that make you feel like everything's s**t at the beginning and then everything's great by the end". Her debut album's out now but you've probably already heard her on songs like Zedd's 'Clarity'.
Do any of the bin-delving, urban mammals appear in her band as her namesake suggests?
Don't be silly.

If you're starting off 2014 feeling a little bit worse for wear (Too many Cheeky Vimtos and too much twerking last night?), let Digital Spy soothe your aching head with some exciting news. 2014 is going to be a bloody belting year for entertainment.
Want to know why? Here are 25 reasons that the next 365 days are going to be pretty flipping awesome.
TV
1. True Detective - January
What will be the Breaking Bad of 2014? We can probably rule out Splash! and the comeback for Birds of a Feather, but other than that there's a pretty open field for new dramas this year, hoping to fill a Heisenberg-shaped hole.
HBO's gritty new serial killer series is currently the most likely contender with incredible trailers and some serious hype. If we could only watch one new show next year, this would be it. It arrives in the Us in January and on Sky Atlantic in February.

Gary Barlow casually announced his intention to quit The X Factor midway through an assessment of Rough Copy's cover of Phil Collins's 'In The Air Tonight' on Saturday evening, providing a rare flicker of excitement in a weirdly uneventful opening weekend for series 10's Live Shows.
After three years as the head judge on the ITV talent show, the Take That star has decided to hang up his mentoring boots and head back to touring and piano-tinkling as a solo act and with Mark, Howard, Jason (and possibly Robbie).
His track record on the show isn't much of a CV to brag about (Cocozza, The Maloney, Craig bloody Colton), but Barlow's serious-face has been a useful ying to the bonkers yang of Louis Walsh and co.
So who can possibly fill his boots when series 11 (yes 11!) rolls around in 2014? Here are our five best guesses.

What is about Britain's Comic Relief telethon "Red Nose Day" that draws in so much talent?
Below you can see out comic, actor, author and generally brilliant Stephen Fry explain exactly what's it's been like being part of the Red Nose Day effort for the past 20 years. He explains it better than I ever could.
Out star Graham Norton hosted the night with Davina, and had considerably more fun than most American telethons. Plus, he had a sense of history with previous years, as evidenced here.
He also got various prim and proper celebrities to tell their most embarrassing moments, before embarrassing them even more using his Big Red Button.
Doctor Who isn't specifically gay (though Matt Smith does play one in a movie), but I've always felt it had a certain campy sensibility. And in this clip he shows us just how distracted straight boys are by girls in short skirts.
