In honor of the late Robbie Robertson, whose “Killers of the Flower Moon” score was his final work, Martin Scorsese hosted a private tribute concert Wednesday in Los Angeles that had guests including Joni Mitchell, Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone watching Jackson Browne and other musicians perform Robertson’s songs as well as score excerpts.
The tribute to Robertson — who died on Aug. 9 at age 80 — took place before 200 invited guests at the composer’s longtime recording-studio home, the Village Studios in West L.A. Among those joining Browne as performers were Rocco DeLuca, Citizen Cope, Angela McCluskey, Blake Mills, Jim Keltner and, briefly, Jason Isbell, who has a small role in “Killers.”

Sheryl Crow performed an intimate rendition of George Harrison’s “Beware of Darkness” on The Late Show Tuesday evening.
“I love you, Stephen Colbert,” Crow tells the camera, sitting at her piano. “There, I said it. I’m going to play you guys a song called ‘Beware of Darkness’ from George Harrison, one of my favorite artists of all time.”
Crow launched into the All Things Must Pass track, singing its comforting opening lines: “Watch out now, take care/Beware of falling swingers/Dropping all around you/The pain that often mingles/In your fingertips.

For the better part of the past few decades, Robbie Robertson has been more comfortable in the studio carefully crafting and composing music than he has been sharing it with the wider public. But 2019 has been different, and with good reason.
This year alone, Robertson’s documentary about his former musical outfit The Band, “Once Were Brothers,” opened up the Toronto Film Festival, scored Martin Scorsese’s lates mob epic, “The Irishman,” oversaw The Band ‘s latest box set release and even found time to put out “Sinematic,” his first album in eight years. And this was all just in the past few months.
Despite having not released an album of new material since 2011’s “How To Become Clairvoyant” where he collaborated with Eric Clapton, Robertson has maintained a rigorous schedule, hunkering down mostly at the legendary Village Studios in Santa Monica. The result of those long hours comes in...

Robbie Robertson is gearing up to release Sinematic, his first studio album in more than seven years that marks a shift in the legendary Band guitarist’s writing: while he wrote mainly character songs for years, his 2016 bestselling autobiography Testimony pushed Robertson to more personal territory. “There is something blatantly honest about this period I’m in now, what I’m drawn to,” Robertson told Rolling Stone’s David Browne. “I guess I’m at an age now – a place in my journey – where I don’t care what you think.

From his work with the Band through the solo albums he’s done over the last three decades, Robbie Robertson is the first to admit he generally hasn’t written much about his own life. “I used to try to avoid that,” he says. “I would hear other people singing songs about, ‘I got up this morning and had some toast and went out and got the newspapers,’ and I’d think, ‘God, you’re boring. I don’t care what you had for breakfast.’ I was going in another direction.

We're always on the lookout for below-the-radar films that show the burgeoning talent of the filmmaker to keep an eye on, and "Bird in Hand" is such an example. An indie romance inspired by the visual and narrative approach of Kelly Reichardt’s early output, this no-budget feature was shot over three years, basically whenever the cast and crew had any spare time to work on it. Produced and directed by Mark Olesko and Michael Manziello, and starring Andrew Westhoff, Valerie Boucvalt, Mona Fox, and Benjamin Boucvalt, the movie also boasts a score composed and performed by popular indie songwriter Citizen Cope. However, you might have noticed that there isn’t a screenplay credit. That's because the film’s story was improvised during production, letting the filmmakers capture a true independent spirit. Here’s the synopsis: “A meditative journey through the shifting landscape of emotion and the hypnotic quality of our desires.

Elizabeth Banks, Elton John, Josh Groban and Tim Robbins are catching school spirit. The stars are joining the White House's Turnaround Arts program and adopting low-performing public schools, increasing the number of art teachers and musical instruments in those schools and using their household names to increase student engagement. The four along with Chad Smith, Frank Gehry, Clarence Greenwood (Citizen Cope), Doc Shaw, Marc Anthony, Rashida Jones, Russell Simmons, the Silk Road Ensemble and Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews are the latest “Turnaround Artists” added to a public-private program in the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. [Press Release] (November 11, 2013– Los Angeles, CA) – Metropolis Movie Music is proud to announce the release of the Dom Hemingway Original Motion Picture Soundtrack with original score by composer Rolfe Kent (Labor Day, Sideways). The album, which will be released on November 11th, also features tracks by Chad Hobson, Citizen Cope, and the film’s Emilia Clarke. “I have worked on at least 6 films with Richard [Shepard, director], and each one takes a completely different approach,” said Kent. “I was blown away by Dom Hemingway the first time I saw it. It has all this vintage machismo energy, yet is so human, so deeply touching. The music had to keep up with these whirlwind performances, and bring out the excitement in a new way.” Dom Hemingway stars Jude Law as a larger-than-life...

Jude Law’s turn in “Don Hemingway” certainly got the attention of Playlist writer Kevin Jagernauth when he reviewed the film at Tiff this year. The story of a corrupt man (Law) being released from prison is a “brazenly R-rated and devilish” picture as recounted in our original review. The U.S. release isn’t until April, but the movie is hitting theaters in the U.K. next week, which means a new clip from the film has arrived along with full soundtrack details. Featuring an original score by Rolfe Kent (“Election”), the disc will also include tracks by Citizen Cope, Chad Hobson, and “Games of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke, who plays Dom's estranged daughter Evelyn in the film. Speaking of Daenerys Targaryen, a clip of Clarke’s vocal work in the film has been released and shows off her beautiful set of pipes, as she performs a cover of The Waterboys’ “Fisherman’s Blues,...

There is no "Lost" tonight, so I'm sure all the "Lost" fans out there are getting the shakes right about now. Of course, there's only about four weeks left to the end of "Lost" anyway, since the series finale will be airing on May 23th. I'm going to point out that May 23rd is a Sunday, and I'm bewildered as to what ABC is thinking by taking one of the most popular shows on TV and moving the date of the two hour long series finale from its usual night. Then again, I don't really understand a lot of things about how TV scheduling works, I'm know I'm going to be watching "Glee" because that's how I roll. Here's what else is on TV tonight:
8:00 p.m.: "90210" on The CW.
"American Idol" on Fox.
"The Biggest Loser" on NBC.
"Dancing With the Stars" on ABC.
"Ancient Aliens: The Visitors" on History Channel.

After being dominated for weeks by movie stars, the talk shows are all about music this week. There are some excellent excuses to stay up way past your bed time in the coming days, as there will be some electrifying performances from some of the best artists working. Sadly, David Letterman will be left out in the cold, as "The Late Show" only airs twice (on Tuesday, April 6 and Wednesday, April 7). That seems like an excellent excuse to tune in to "The Tonight Show," as Jay Leno welcomes Slash and Andrew Stockdale (performing the new single "By the Sword" from Slash's new solo album) on Tuesday, Corinne Bailey Rae on Wednesday and Train (whose "Hey Soul Sister" continues a dominant climb up the charts) on Thursday (April 8). Leno will also chat with the likes of David Boreanaz, Demi Moore and David Duchovny.
