Following her recent Oscar-nominated role in Bradley Cooper’s dramatic biopic “Maestro,” actress Carey Mulligan is switching it up and returning to the world of comedy. Variety reports that Universal’s Focus Features has acquired the new Mulligan film “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” formerly known as “One For The Money.”
The pic hails from the director James Griffiths (“Cuban Fury”) and is produced by veteran British comedian Steve Coogan via Baby Cow Productions with a supporting cast that includes Sian Clifford (“Fleabag”) and Akemnji Ndifornyen (“Famalam”).

Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to Carey Mulligan comedy “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” Variety can confirm exclusively.
They will release the film in the U.S. while Universal Pictures International is handling global distribution.
The film, which was previously titled “One For The Money,” is directed by James Griffiths (“Cuban Fury”) and produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow productions (“Philomena”).
The screenplay was written by Tom Basden (“After Life”) and Tim Key (“Great Expectations”), who also star in the film alongside Sian Clifford (“Fleabag”) and Akemnji Ndifornyen (“Famalam”).
“The Ballad of Wallis Island” tells the story of Charles (played by Key), an eccentric lottery winner who tries to reunite his favorite musical duo Mortimer-McGwyer (Mulligan and Basden) despite the fact they split up many years ago. Making things even more awkward, the musicians – Nell Mortimer and Herb McGwyer — were also once romantically involved with each other a la Sonny and Cher.

It is already known that fans will definitely get a third Venom movie as actor Tom Hardy stated in August 2018 that he had signed on to star in three Venom films. So far, we have got two movies and both of them had a decent box office run. Although the movie is set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (Ssu), it has been hinted in 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage that the franchise might get integrated with Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A still from Venom (2018)
Recently, Sony announced the third film’s title, Venom: The Last Dance, a phrase which is often used to describe the last act. Sony also revealed that the film is all set to hit the theatres on October 25th, 2024. In a recent interview, industry insider Jeff Sneider revealed his opinion on the film’s title, suspecting that the film’s going to be a “symbiote mayhem.

It’s been a bustling, seemingly nonstop awards season, but Hollywood’s stars and stylists truly did save the best for last.
That’s the verdict from the red carpet at Oscars 2024, which served up a plethora of looks that were often dramatic, sometimes over-the-top and grand, and occasionally just simply dazzling. Among the night’s biggest fashion surprises: Margot Robbie eschewed her now-trademark pink in favor of a beautifully sculpted gown in deep brown by Versace — and it was America Ferrera who embraced Barbie’s signature color in a stunning pink chainmail dress, also by Versace.
Indeed, Robbie turned out to be prescient with her choice of color, as noir-hued gowns ruled the 2024 Oscars red carpet. Some were sleek and simple, like the Dolce & Gabbana gown worn by Jamie Lee Curtis, or they brought the drama, with Sandra Hüller’s Schiaparelli and Carey Mulligan’s ivory-accented black mermaid...

Actress Emma Stone has made waves this year with her Oscar-nominated performance in the dark comedy Poor Things. The actress was universally lauded for her performance as Bella Baxter in the period comedy which also starred Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, and Ramy Youssef. The film was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who collaborated with Stone again after The Favorite.
Emma Stone has been nominated thrice before, winning Best Actress once for La La Land. This time, Stone shares the nominations with actresses such as Lily Gladstone, Sandra Huller, Carey Mulligan, and Annette Bening. Despite her worldwide stardom, the Easy A star is reportedly not the richest actress in the nominations. That post reportedly goes to veteran actress Annette Bening, who is nominated for her role in Nyad.

In the end the delayed release date for “Poor Things” (Searchlight) due to the actors strike boosted the movie into the holiday box office derby. Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Frankenstein’s monster film wowed audiences and critics at the fall festivals and has grossed more than $104 million worldwide. Oscar winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) won the Comedy Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards and the BAFTA (where she wasn’t up against Lily Gladstone) and could take home another gold statue. Carey Mulligan has more than lived up to her promise. The English actor was an obvious, stand-out talent early in her career, whether she was playing one of the Bennett sisters in Joe Wright’s “Pride & Prejudice” adaptation or in an acclaimed one-episode appearance in BBC’s “Doctor Who.” When 2009 saw her receive a Best Actress nomination for her role in the acclaimed drama “An Education,” it seemed to mark the emergence of a great new young actor.
And since that breakthrough, Mulligan has only continued to go from strength to strength. An actor’s actor with the ability to fully embody the complicated women she’s often cast as, Mulligan consistently picks interesting, juicy parts, in films as varied as “Never Let Me Go,” “Drive,” “Shame,” “Far from the Madding Crowd,” and “Mudbound.” As she’s gotten a little older and aged out of the young ingenue parts...

If a certain kind of sci-fi film is anything to go on, what humanity is most likely to discover, as we venture out on our second space race, is some aspect of ourselves. In Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, Matthew McConaughey falls into a black hole only to find a multidimensional mirror into his own failures as a father. In James Gray’s Ad Astra, Brad Pitt goes to Jupiter and beyond to find peace with his dad. As far back as Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris, an alien planet manifests the memories of the astronauts who discover it. Even the cosmic trip of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey stages a return to origins of sorts.
In Johan Renck’s Spaceman, Adam Sandler becomes just the latest lonely spacefarer to have the abyss confront him with an uncanny reflection of himself. This story of an existentialist voyage to the stars,...

Despite his place as a comedy icon, Adam Sandler is no stranger to dramatic roles; yet, his performance in new Netflix film Spaceman is likely the most serious work he’s ever done.
At the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, Sandler told The Hollywood Reporter how director Johan Renck “kept saying, ‘I want to see none of Adam Sandler in there,'” as the star joked, “I understood, I hear that in my house too: ‘I want to see none of Adam Sandler.'”
“I did my best,” Sandler continued of stripping his signature comedic style from the role. “He didn’t want me sounding like me, he didn’t want me making faces. It was a difficult process.”

Drifting alone through space in a cramped craft, headed toward Jupiter and a strange anomaly known as the Chopra cloud, cosmonaut Jakub Prochazka (Adam Sandler) conducts a satellite interview with schoolchildren back on Earth. A little girl asks: "I read that you're the loneliest man in the world ... does it make you sad to be so far away?" Thus the mood is set for "Spaceman," Johan Renck's melancholy sci-fi story about loneliness, love, and a giant talking space spider. This is a strange film, and perhaps the strangest aspect of all is that it stars Adam Sandler.
Sandler is no stranger to drama at this point. Indeed, whenever the comic performer turns around and delivers a dramatic performance it's almost always met with universal praise. "Hey, that's right!" we all seem to proclaim in unison. "Adam Sandler is a pretty good actor when he wants to be!" But "Spaceman...

Carey Mulligan says she’d love to star in a rom-com with Adam Sandler following their work together in the new Johan Renck-directed Netflix drama “Spaceman.”
“The Wedding Singer’ is one of my favorite movies, ‘50 First Dates,’ everything he’s done with Jennifer Aniston, I am there for it,” Mulligan told me at the “Spaceman” premiere Monday night at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. “We have to do a rom-com 100 percent!”
And she’s already got the pitch – sort of: “We have to pick the location first where we want to have a really nice holiday and then build the story around that.”
Sandler stars in “Spaceman” as an astronaut on a solo, year-long mission in space. As he comes to realize that his marriage is in trouble (Mulligan plays his wife), he also starts seeing and talking to a giant spider (voiced by Paul Dano) that suddenly appears on his ship.

Oscar-nominated sound mixer Steve Morrow has recorded quite a few party scenes in his career, in movies such as “Don’t Worry Darling,” “The Prom” and “Babylon.”
When it came to Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Morrow had to figure out how to capture the sound in a prominent party scene that takes place at the Bernstein family apartment in the Dakota Building in New York. It’s a key moment that transitions the film from black and white to 1970s color, anchored by Carey Mulligan’s Felicia smoking a cigarette, staring out the window at Central Park while a bustling party surrounds her.
Morrow knew how the film would transition visually, but his team was tasked with capturing sound from both Felicia’s and Lenny’s (Cooper) circles. “We filmed it at the same time,” explains Morrow. “I’m listening to both parties happening and trying to understand who’s saying what and when.

(The following conversation does not reveal my wife’s final SAG Awards picks, only what she was considering. Her ultimate ballot remains confidential.)
My wife Jill is an actress and a voting member of the Screen Actors Guild, giving me – an editor at Gold Derby – a unique perspective on the process of choosing winners for this Saturday’s SAG Awards. And by “unique,” of course I mean surreal. Witness our Wednesday night discussion of what she was leaning toward in filling out her ballot.
“Ok honey, let’s start off by looking at who you’re considering for lead actor,” I begin.
“Well, I can tell you that Bradley Cooper was too showy and too mannered in ‘Maestro’,” she believes, “There was too much style going on. Cillian Murphy was pretty darn good (in “Oppenheimer”), but I didn’t like the character.”
“What didn’t you like about him?” I ask.

After a year hit with Hollywood strikes and an early buzz positioning Christopher Nolan’s drama about the creation of the atomic bomb as a frontrunner, sentiments from more than a dozen Oscar voters on the first day of final voting revealed a strong backing for Nolan. “Nolan fucking deserves it,” an anonymous voter emphasizes to Variety, highlighting the widespread acclaim for Nolan’s direction and billion-dollar blockbuster.
Furthermore, Robert Downey Jr., a nominee for supporting actor, appears to be a strong frontrunner for his first Oscar, with a significant majority of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) voters indicating their support for him.
It’s important to note that many voters interviewed have yet to cast their ballots, and plan to do so over the weekend after watching more films. Also, this is merely a small sample of the nearly 10,000 eligible AMPAS voters. Nonetheless, Sandra Hüller...

Adam Sandler has gone pseudo-serious before, from a mentally agitated toilet plunger salesman in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk Love” to a depressed comic in Judd Apatow’s “Funny People.” But he’s never been so dour as cosmonaut Jakub Prochazka in Johan Renck’s lonely island of a science-fiction drama, “Spaceman,” where he’s six months into a solitary research mission investigating spectral cloud activity around the planet Jupiter.
Sci-fi cinephiles are certainly familiar with the cinematic wonderments capable of the gas giant, thanks to Stanley Kubrick’s Stargate sequence in “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which sends Keir Dullea on an existential trip into Jupiter’s furthest depths. But Renck’s film, written by Colby Day, is too concerned with the far more banal Earthly dramas Jakub has left behind in the form of his wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan), who is preparing to leave him. “Spaceman” is a miserable...

Adam Sandler is the first to admit that he “rarely gets more than 8 minutes alone before I have to start doing something.”
Despite the loneliness issue encountered by his character Jakub, an astronaut who ventures into space in Swedish director Johan Renck’s feature Spaceman, Sandler told journalists on Wednesday: “I recommend to all of you spending time alone in a spaceship.”
It was that sort of a press conference. Lots of jokes from Sandler, who plays a serious role in the film, and lots of questions from reporters about loneliness and disconnection, two central themes of the film.
Shot at the end of the pandemic, some of the film’s players barely met, even on the shoot, which only enhanced the feeling. “I think I saw Adam at the airport,” quipped actor Kunal Nayyar. Paul Dano spoke about rehearsals on Zoom. Some players shot in Prague, while others were in New York.

The Berlin Film Festival was rocking Wednesday afternoon as Adam Sandler rolled into town with Spaceman, his latest feature for Netflix.
The Uncut Gems actor and his co-stars, including Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano, received buoyant rounds of applause as they entered the press conference for the film this afternoon in Berlin.
Adapted for the screen by Colby Day, the film is based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař, which was released in 2017. It picks up with Sandler’s astronaut Jakub six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, as he realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time, which he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Voiced...

Adam Sandler was faced with a new challenge on the set of his upcoming Netflix film “Spaceman”: using wires to appear like an astronaut floating in space. At the film’s Berlin Film Festival press conference on Wednesday, Sandler cheekily reflected on the experience, saying the “wires hurt me.”
“The wires were tough because my body’s not the most flexible body. The wires hurt me, they dug into me. The stuntmen who would wire me up every day, I would say ‘that hurts’ and they didn’t believe me,” Sandler said as the room erupted in laughter. “But we did it as a team. [Director] Johan [Renck] would say, ‘You don’t look like you’re floating, what are you doing?’ And then I would say, ‘Well, what should we do?’ And then they’d wire Johan up and he’d be like, ‘More like this!'”

“Maestro” makeup artist Kazu Hiro misses Bradley Cooper’s Lenny. “This is the first show I felt like, ‘Oh, at the end of the filming, we can keep going. He was so fun.'”
For them, every shooting day began with hours in the chair as the two-time Oscar-winning makeup artist Hiro silently applied Cooper’s makeup that would allow him to portray 40 years of the composer-conductor’s colorful life.
“We don’t talk much,” said Hiro, who was part of a “Maestro” panel that I hosted for Netflix’s Tudum event January 13. “It’s a long day, so it’s quite tough. And he asked me to do the makeup by myself. Usually we make a team, but he noticed that everybody has a different brain and eyes and hands. He needed space. That helped Bradley to focus and get ready for the film.”

London, Feb 19 (Ians) Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan, who have been nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress for their roles as composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia in ‘Maestro’, made their way together down the red carpet, reports BBC.
Cooper, who also directed the film, said the music “is the actual guiding light of the whole film because it’s scored to (Bernstein’s) music”.
He also paid tribute to Mulligan, saying: “It was always joyful, every time I got excited to do a scene with her. It was just effortless.”
On bringing the relatively unknown Felicia to life, Mulligan, according to BBC, said it “wouldn’t have been possible” without the help of the Bernstein family, and added: “I felt like they couldn’t have been more generous.”

Fifteen years ago, Carey Mulligan made her first visit to the Berlin Film Festival to support her star-making turn in the dramedy An Education. Lone Scherfig’s film centers on Jenny (Mulligan), a teen in 1960s suburban London who falls for a smooth-talking older man played by Peter Sarsgaard.
Scherfig (Italian for Beginners) shared an agent with writer Nick Hornby, who penned the script based on journalist Lynn Barber’s autobiographical essay.
The movie boasted supporting roles for Emma Thompson, Alfred Molina and Rosamund Pike but had a bumpy path and lost financing prior to production. Mulligan told The Hollywood Reporter at the time that 18 months passed between her initial audition and the project getting the greenlight, leading her to take a job at a pub in the interim.
When An Education premiered at Sundance in January 2009, THR praised it as a “smart, moving but not inaccessible entry in the coming-of-age canon.

There’s a saying over here in the UK about London buses. You wait so long for one and then two turn up at once. That notion could play out at this year’s Academy Awards as this 2024 ceremony could be the second in a row where all four acting winners are rookie nominees.
This happened last year when Michelle Yeoh edged out Cate Blanchett (“Tár”) to win Best Actress for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while her co-stars also emerged victorious. Jamie Lee Curtis took home Best Supporting Actress and Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. And Best Actor went to “The Whale” star Brendan Fraser.
The last time this played out was in 2006 when Phillip Seymour-Hoffman won Best Actor for “Capote,” Reese Witherspoon took home Best Actress for “Walk the Line,” Rachel Weisz triumphed in Best Supporting Actress for “The Constant Gardener,” and George Clooney emerged victorious...

“Shit, I’ve been around, dude,” cracked Bradley Cooper on Thursday night after he watched a montage of his 25 years of screen work with a capacity crowd inside Santa Barbara’s historic 2000-seat Arlington Theatre en route to collecting the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Outstanding Performer of the Year Award.
The 49-year-old — who is currently Oscar-nominated for producing, co-writing and acting in Maestro, a film that he also directed for Netflix about the complicated marriage of Leonard Bernstein, played by Cooper, and Felicia Montealegre Bernstein, played by Carey Mulligan — was feted by Mulligan and, in a surprise appearance, by his friend Brad Pitt. Pitt declared, “For me, Maestro is a masterwork,” adding, “Yes, it takes great actors, but it also takes great construction. And I’m telling you, not since [Robert] Redford have I seen anyone do it so well.”

Amid tributes from Brad Pitt, Carey Mulligan, and the 2024 Santa Barbara International Film Festival itself, “Maestro” director, co-writer, and star Bradley Cooper fit in his own send-ups to a few famous names he’s gotten to work with.
On Thursday evening, the multi-hyphenate was on hand to accept the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, and the current Oscar nominee reflected on his career in conversation with Deadline’s Pete Hammond, including the period in which he was a student asking questions at tapings of “Inside the Actors Studio,” hosted by James Lipton.
Recalling when he got to query his future “Silver Linings Playbook” co-star Robert De Niro about whether an acting choice he made in the 1990 film “Awakenings” was inspired by someone he knew, or was organic, Cooper said, “I thought maybe he would laugh. You think all these weird things, that he was going to laugh at you.

Everyone possesses a favorite memory when it comes to Chanel, a testament to the strength of the iconography of the legendary French house. That idea was certainly true among the Hollywood stars who turned up on the evening of Feb. 7 for the debut of Chanel’s first U.S. boutique dedicated to fine jewelry and watches, located on New York’s Fifth Avenue in Midtown’s landmark 1921 Crown Building.
Carey Mulligan was among the actresses who did not hesitate when asked which signature element of the brand might be a favorite. “Chanel No. 5, because it’s been my mother’s fragrance for as long as I can remember,” she explained to The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet. “Until this day, the smell of that scent is: that’s my mum going out to dinner, or that’s my mum going to work. Once upon an awards season, Lily Gladstone looked to be the Oscar frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Then, she switched categories and was many experts’ tips to win Best Actress instead. Now, however, her status as Oscar favorite has dwindled — with an omission at the BAFTAs contributing to that.
Instead, Emma Stone looks like she might take home her second Best Actress Oscar for “Poor Things” after she won her first in 2017 for “La La Land.” Stone will surely cement that status with a predicted win at the BAFTAs, where she is nominated alongside Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Vivian Oparah (“Rye Lane”), and Margot Robbie (“Barbie”).
Stone is the overwhelming favorite to win this BAFTA award and she sits top of our BAFTA odds chart for this category with Hüller in second.

Carey Mulligan, who is nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars for her performance as Felicia Montealegre Bernstein in Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” did her part to wave away any suggestion that performers don’t care about awards. An actor who claims not to care is “100% lying,” Mulligan said in an interview with The Times of London.
An Oscar nomination “is just the coolest thing,” the 38-year-old said. And she ought to know, as “Maestro” is her third such recognition. Mulligan was nominated in 2020 for “Promising Young Woman,” one of five nominations for the film, which won writer-director Emerald Fennell a Best Original Screenplay trophy, and 2009’s “An Education,” one of three nominations for the romantic drama co-starring Peter Sarsgaard.

BAFTA threw up plenty of surprises and snobs in their nominations lineups this year with Best Actress one of the most intriguing and head-scratching categories of the year. “Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone was snubbed while Annette Bening (“Nyad”) also didn’t make the cut. Both of those performers were nominated at the Oscars, however.

Actress Carey Mulligan is upset for Greta Gerwig after she failed to be nominated for ‘Barbie’. The blockbuster live-action movie about the iconic Mattel doll became the biggest film of 2023, and given its deep message of female empowerment, it was a surprise when Margot Robbie’s (Barbie) co-star Ryan Gosling (Ken) received only nods for Best Supporting Actor and Best Picture at the upcoming Academy Awards, but both the leading lady and the film’s director missed out on a nomination.

Carey Mulligan says actors who claim to stay above the race for awards are “100 percent lying.”
Mulligan is up for a best actress at this year’s Academy Awards, nominated for her performance as Felicia Montealegre in Bradley Cooper’s Maestro. The nomination, she told The London Times, “is just the coolest thing. Because it’s from your peers. It’s wicked.”
Those who claim the recognition doesn’t matter, she says, are lying. She added that she’s especially “gutted” for Barbie director Greta Gerwig, who — to much public outcry — was not nominated for best director at this year’s Oscars.
“I’m gutted for Greta because I don’t know what else you can do as a director to get nominated,” Mulligan told the Times. “You make a critically acclaimed film that’s also an incredible global success, and yet you don’t get nominated?”

Carey Mulligan is nominated for best actress at the Oscars for a third time thanks to her performance in Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” (her other nominations came for “An Education” and “Promising Young Woman”), and it’s a honor that never gets old for the star. During a recent interview with The Times of London, Mulligan admitted that awards do matter despite many actors saying otherwise.

It’s a sentiment also shared by Jeffrey Wright, nominated for his first Oscar this year thanks to his acclaimed role in “American Fiction.”

As this year’s Oscar nominees enter the final stages of award season campaigning, they’re often forced to perform the delicate balancing act of hyping up their work while pretending not to care about winning. Maestro actress Carey Mulligan has broken one of Hollywood’s oldest taboos when it comes to Awards season: never say it matters.

After a strike-related delay, the Environmental Media Association held its 33rd annual awards gala on Saturday, recognizing Hollywood productions for their sustainability efforts both onscreen and behind the scenes. Avatar: The Way of Water, Extrapolations, Unstable and documentary Common Ground were among the night’s winners, with Laura Dern also being recognized with the Ema Ongoing Commitment Award for her activism in the fight against climate change.
At the event, held at Los Angeles’ Sunset Las Palmas Studios, Dern — who narrates and produced Common Ground, which follows the pioneers of the regenerative farming movement and the ways it may save the planet — began her speech by shouting out her collaborators on the film. For the second time in six years, the Best Actress category looked to be on track to feature nominees from films nominated for Best Picture. But just like six years ago, it came up short — and it once again involved Margot Robbie.

Oscar and BAFTA nominee Bradley Cooper shared insight into his work on Maestro and other movies, his next film and his career in London on Wednesday evening during a British Film Institute (BFI) event. Answering questions from filmmaker Stephen Daldry (The Crown, The Hours), he also lauded the talents of such co-stars as Carey Mulligan, Lady Gaga, Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence, and described Clint Eastwood and Robert De Niro as idols.
In a wide-ranging chat, Cooper also entertained the audience with stories about attending the Glastonbury music festival with Michael Fassbender and why he loves the voice of Sam Elliott.

The upcoming 74th Berlin Film Festival looks set to be its starriest edition in years with Kristen Stewart, Adam Sandler, Cillian Murphy, Lena Dunham, Sebastian Stan, Amanda Seyfried and Rooney Mara among the talent due to attend this year.
Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian confirmed the actors’ presence in an interview with Deadline following the festival’s official press conference on Monday.
“Yes. All the stars we have invited are expected to be here and have confirmed their presence,” he said, when quizzed on the above names. “I think the glamor aspect on the red carpet is a good one this year.”

Stewart, who was at the festival last year as jury president, returns for the Berlinale Special Gala screening of Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding alongside Katy O’Brian, Ed Harris, Dave Franco and Jena Malone.
