Austin, TX – The 2024Sxsw Conference and Festivals wrapped on March 16th, after nine days of magic and Austin wackiness, showcasing film, TV, interactive, conferences, interviews and music. The Film & TV Fest named “Bob Trevino Likes It” as the top Narrative Feature and “Marvin is Sorry” as top TV Pilot.
The Narrative Jury included Chicago critic Robert Daniels. The Jury’s statement about “Bob Trevino Likes It” was “Tracie Laymon’s semi-autobiographical story of a struggling young woman who finds anchor in an unlikely connection feels at once familiar and yet surprising. Laymon’s sure hand transforms what might have been saccharine into something raw thanks to vulnerable lead performances from Barbie Ferreira and an unusually uncool John Leguizamo. Refreshingly real and wrenchingly bittersweet, “Bob Trevino Likes It” stole our hearts and earned this prize.”

While there are still several days of buzzy film premieres remaining at SXSW 2024, all of the films playing in competition have screened for audiences and critics. The film festival’s jury announced the winners of the festival’s major awards on Thursday, giving out prizes for narrative feature, documentary feature, and a variety of short, episodic, and Xr categories.
The narrative feature competition was won by “Bob Trevino Likes It,” Tracie Laymon’s dramedy that stars Barbie Ferreira as a young woman who seeks to heal wounds from her relationship with her abusive father by befriending an unrelated man with the exact same name (John Leguizamo).
The top documentary prize went to Sam Crane and Pinny Grylls’ groundbreaking documentary “Grand Theft Hamlet,” which followed a group of actors staging a production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” inside “Grand Theft Auto Online” during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rockstar Games shared a moody new trailer Wednesday for its anticipated sequel “Red Dead Redemption 2,” and now we know a little more about its world and gameplay thanks to a 45-minute demo impressions piece at IGN.
“Red Dead 2” is the story of Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang in 1899. During the two-minute trailer, the outlaws rob banks, trains, and stagecoaches. There are a lot of fisticuffs, bullets, and beautifully animated horses.
“With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal, and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive,” Rockstar stated in its description of the video.

When Flula Borg showed up in the Pitch Perfect 2 trailer I found myself smiling at his success. It was a cameo keen to capitalize on his YouTube DJ fame and unabashedly broken English Chatty Cathy vibe, but it was studio film exposure nonetheless. This cemented the fact that I had become a fan of this crazy German and as such jumped at the chance to see how he’d do as co-lead and co-writer of his own vehicle. Just as the prospect interested me, however, it’ll surely infuriate others. Flula’s shtick is not universally palatable and Buddymoon does sink or swim depending on your enjoyment of it. But that’s okay. This thing was shot in ten days amongst friends. It’s not trying to take the world by storm.

As Sundance and Slamdance prepare to kick off this week some insiders have predicted there could be a surge of activity from digital platforms besides Netflix and Amazon Studios.
The latter two are expected to be active – and indeed have already taken a few Park City titles off the table – yet there is talk of other well-capitalised companies mulling over a splashy entry into the acquisitions arena.
The Sundance Film Festival runs from January 21-31.
Nimble digital platforms challenge traditional buyers
Faced with sharp digital rivals unencumbered by the need to spend on costly P&A and plugged into transactional data that enables them to target audiences with forensic precision, theatrical buyers will need to be on their toes.
The distribution landscape is crowded and unforgiving, yet creative marketing campaigns can pave the way to success.
Among others, A24 did it with Ex Machina and Fox Searchlight reaped rewards with its 2015 Sundance pick-up Brooklyn, earning Oscar nods...

So I just got back from Awesome Con DC 2015, and happily, it lived up to its name once again, because it was pretty darned awesome!
It was also kind of interesting to realize that every year I’ve gone has been a different experience, thanks to what I was doing each year. The first year, which was of course also smaller than the current con, I was reporting for ComicMix but did not have any other responsibilities. That meant I had time to see pretty much all of the floor and meet any guests I’d like, plus doing great, longer-form interviews with the talented Phil Lamarr and Billy West. Last year, I was running programming, so I saw a whole lot of back hallways, the exhibit hall whooshing by at a fast clip several times as I hurried around, many great volunteers, and a few guests for just long...

Flula Borg is not satisfied with videos about English slang and in-car jams. The YouTuber, DJ, and actor has launched an Indiegogo campaign for Flundance, a documentary about a movie set to debut at Sundance Film Festival.
Here's the basic idea: Flula is working on a movie called Johnny Fist, which he hopes to debut at Sundance. There's only one problem: Johnny Fist hasn't been made yet, and Sundance, which begins January 22nd in Park City, Utah, is only a week away. "Have I started writing, or shooting, or editing, or directing this Film yet at the all?" asks Flula in his Indiegogo campaign. "Yes! I started this Morning!"
Flula will shoot Johnny Fist as he drives from Los Angeles to Park City. Along the way, he will chronicle his journey with Flundance, a behind-the-scenes documentary directed by Alex Simmons. Flundance will ultimately screen at Sundance, and Johnny Fist will...

The 2010 Glyph Comics Awards were handed out Friday night at this weekend's East Coast Black Age of Comics Con. The awards honor "the best in comics made by, for, and about people of color."

The complete list of winners includes:
