Olivia Liang took to Instagram today to express her disappointment at Kung Fu’s cancellation by the CW after three seasons, but also her thanks to the people who made the series possible.
In Kung Fu, a reboot of the classic series, Liang played protagonist Nicky Shen who uses her martial arts skills to protect her city from evil-doers.
“it has been the honor of my (expletive) life to work with this group of humans. we made a historic three seasons of a show. first predominantly Asian cast in a one hour network drama. first Asian American female showrunner. i don’t have enough words (or room in this carousel) to express my gratitude to my show-runners, my writers, my cast, my stunt team, my (expletive) crew… i love you all.”
Christina M. Kim wrote the pilot episode for Kung Fu and served as executive producer/co-showrunner with Robert Berens.

The CW will not continue with Kung Fu, its reboot of the classic series, which has run for three seasons. It is the latest cancellation of an existing scripted series at the network, which is changing its business model under its new owners to focus on lower-cost scripted originals, primarily from Canada and the UK.
So far, only the CW’s strongest existing scripted series, All American and Walker, have been renewed for next season. The three least likely, The Winchesters, Kung Fu and Walker Independence, have been canceled. Remaining in limbo are Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming, which are believed to have the best chance (however small it may be), followed by Gotham Knights.

“The Winchesters” has been canceled after one season at The CW, with the network also canceling the reboot of “Kung Fu” after three seasons.
“As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions,” The CW said in a statement. “We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of ‘Kung Fu’ and ‘The Winchesters’ for all their hard work, creativity and dedication.”
The “Supernatural” prequel series “The Winchesters” followed demon hunters Sam and Dean’s parents, John (Drake Rodger) and Mary (Meg Donnelly), telling the story of how the couple met as teens and how they ultimately came together to save the entire world. The story is told from Dean’s (Jensen Ackles) perspective, marking the first return of Ackles’ character since the series finale in November of 2020.
In addition to Rodger and Donnelly, Bianca Kajlich, Demetria McKinney, and Nida Khurshid also starred.

Television producers have long used their medium as a tool to push progressive thinking on such nuanced topics as interracial dating, queer acceptance and abortion into everyday American households. But what about storytelling that makes these creators and their supporters point the finger inward at their own shortcomings and failures to act?
This year, as a result of increased publicity for Black Lives Matter and other similar movements, several Emmy contenders have had honest conversations about race in their writers’ rooms and on screen. These depictions include the obvious outward kind, as well as the internal biases that live within us all.
Christina M. Kim, co-showrunner for the CW’s martial-arts drama “Kung Fu,” says her program had an added layer of need to cover the matter because “our show, is about a Chinese American family and a lot of it takes place within the Chinese-American community.”

The CW is continuing to kick-ass with renewals.
The youth-skewing broadcaster has picked up freshman series Kung Fu for a second season and handed a third season of DC’s Stargirl ahead of its sophomore debut.
This comes as the network continues to look for stability in its scripted lineup – bringing the number of renewals for the 2021-22 season to 15 with only The Republic of Sarah, which launches in June, still pending.
The renewal of Kung Fu is not a surprise. The drama kicked off strong with more than 3.5M viewers watching the premiere episode and it had the highest total viewership number for a Wednesday debut in 7 years since The 100 debuted in 2014.

With the new series “Kung Fu,” Sherri Chung becomes the first Asian-American woman responsible for the music of an hour-long network drama — and the choice could not be more perfect.
Chung has moved up through the ranks of television composers, working over the past four years on numerous Greg Berlanti-produced series including “Blindspot,” “Riverdale” and “Batwoman.”
But with the CW’s reimagining of the 1970s classic “Kung Fu,” Chung not only tackles the music of a talked-about series but is rediscovering her own personal heritage as well. “I was equal parts excited and terrified,” she confesses. “This series is celebrating both Chinese culture and Chinese-American culture. It’s breaking down old rules and walls, and creating a new narrative. I feel like I’m really part of that, which is special and totally unexpected.”
Chung is second generation Chinese-American: Her father is Chinese, although born in the U.S.

The 1970s television drama “Kung Fu” was “groundbreaking for what it was when it aired,” says Christina M. Kim. The series brought the art of kung fu into mainstream conversation and millions of homes, also introducing Buddhism to many viewers and showcasing a way to use these spiritual elements to help people. Half a century later, that part of the story is more relevant than ever after a recent wave of anti-Asian racism and violent attacks across the United States.
When rebooting “Kung Fu” for a modern audience, creator and showrunner Kim tells Variety it was important to carry those thematic elements through, but also to finally, truly, tell the story through an Asian American lens. That’s in sharp contrast to white actor David Carradine playing the role of the half-Chinese, half-American Buddhist monk Caine in the original series that ran on ABC from 1972 to 1975.

Greg Berlanti’s domination of the CW continues with “Kung Fu” — and the new drama he executive produces is proof positive that the super-producer is using his powers for good. The show is a revival of a drama starring David Carradine that aired on ABC from 1972 to 1975. The whitewash of Carradine in the role of the Shaolin monk Kwai Chang Caine, who is depicted as half-American and half-Chinese, is a painful part of TV’s legacy. Now, in the hands of showrunner Christina M. Kim, “Kung Fu” reframes the story to be about a young Chinese American woman, and foregrounds a cast of Asian American actors in place of the original series’ white male lead. The pilot of “Kung Fu” suggests a sincere interest in the story of a Chinese family in the U.S., with an amount of complexity and sophistication that one might not necessarily expect from a network action series.

During a panel Wednesday promoting their upcoming series, Kung Fu stars Olivia Liang and Tzi Ma responded to the rising number of violent acts against Asian Americans, condemning the latest incident in Atlanta when a gunman killed eight people, a majority of whom were Asian American.
“What happened last night in Atlanta with eight people killed breaks my heart and I’m not quite sure what the short-term fix is,” said Ma, who appears in the upcoming series as Jin, the father of Liang’s Nicky Shen. “We are the long-term solution.”
“It pains me, everyday it happens, everyday it’s something,” he added.
While Ma said he’s unsure of any quick fix to bring justice to the victims or undo the racist attacks, he said Asian American representation in television and media are part of long-term goals. Liang agreed with her co-star, adding that “the timing of our show is really impeccable.

The cast and creator of The CW’s upcoming “Kung Fu” reboot are using their platform to condemn the recent influx in anti-Asian hate crimes.
“So much about representation and inclusion is not so much that we as Asians need to see ourselves represented on the screens, but we need to be invited into people’s homes who don’t see us in everyday lives, just to humanize us, normalize seeing us, remind them that we are just like they are and have a place in this world. And hopefully having our show in their homes will expand that worldview for them,” said actor Olivia Liang during a virtual panel for the drama on Wednesday.
Added creator and showrunner Christina M. Kim: “I hope that we are part of the solution and having a show like ours on the air, you know, makes us part of the narrative and brings about cultural awareness acceptance.

Two of them come from the CW’s most prolific producer, Greg Berlanti (Kung Fu and Superman & Lois)

The CW is getting ready for some new programming during the 2020-21 TV season, and has given pilot orders to The Republic of Sarah and a Kung-Fu reboot featuring female leads.
But there's also bad news about The Game revival which was recently announced as in-the-works.
The network has decided against ordering a pilot for the series, according to Deadline.
The Game's third chance at life was supposed to come in the form of a one-hour followup to the 2006 half-hour comedy and was coming from original creator Mara Brock Akil and Devon Gregory.
Deadline reports that the network was interested in developing the series with Akil, but she decided against going solo on the project because she and Gregory had already worked on her vision of what the new incarnation would look like.
The series was to move the action to a Baltimore setting and to mix new cast members with returning ones.

The project was previously set up at Fox with a put pilot order. Christina M. Kim will write and executive produce. Martin Gero will executive produce via Quinn’s House along with...

The CW has not shied away from picking up projects originally developed at other networks — Fox or siblings CBS and Showtime — a move that has resulted in such signature CW series as Riverdale, Supergirl, Black Lightning, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and the underrated Ringer. The CW is doing it again this year with pilot orders to Kung Fu, a reimagining with a female lead of the 1970s David Carradine-starring TV series, from Greg Berlanti, and small-town drama with a female lead The Republic of Sarah, from Marc Webb. The projects had been originally developed at Fox and CBS, respectively, and both were redeveloped for the CW this cycle.
As per the framework of the CW’s setup as a co-venture between Warner Bros. and CBS, which calls for parity in pilot orders, one of the two newly picked up pilots comes from Warner Bros. TV (Kung Fu) and one from CBS...
