Lionsgate has landed domestic distribution rights to “Small Things Like These,” the first film in which Cillian Murphy appears since he won his Oscar for “Oppenheimer.”
Murphy stars in and produced “Small Things Like These,” which made its world premiere at this year’s Berlin Film Festival as the opening night film in competition. The film earned strong reviews, with IndieWire saying Murphy gives another “staggering performance” and that it is “a surprisingly understated film, dour and difficult to watch in places, and firmly rooted in Irish culture and history.” It even won co-star Emily Watson the Silver Bear for her performance.
Lionsgate will partner with Roadside Attractions to release “Small Things Like These” in North America, and Lionsgate also acquired rights in the UK and Ireland. No release date has been set.

After originally ending back in 2022, a historical drama show Peaky Blinders is suddenly getting a revival, this time with Netflix at its helm. By order of Netflix, Steven Knight's long-awaited Peaky Blinders movie is officially happening! Yes, three years since we first learned of showrunner Knight's plans to bring the Brum-set mob drama to the big screen – and two years since Series 6's epic finale saw Tommy Shelby riding off into the sunset – Deadline has confirmed that the series' feature-length follow-up has been greenlit at Netflix. And as if that ain't cause enough for celebration, Cillian Murphy will be back as Tommy Shelby for the film, with Blinders alum Tom Harper (Wild Rose) set to direct and Knight handling the script.
With a Peaky Blinders film finale having been on Knight's mind for a while now, we actually have a pretty solid idea of where our favourite flat-cap wearing clan's return will take us already. When Empire spoke to Knight back in 2022, the show's creator talked about how the Blinders story,...

Peaky Blinders caught the imagination by swerving the unexpected. Creator Steven Knight put the whole thing on a tilt from the start by not setting his gangster drama in London, but in (then) unfashionable Birmingham. He made family leader Tommy Shelby not the eldest but the middle brother. He mad Helen McCrory’s indelible Polly Gray not Tommy’s mother but his aunt. His working class characters weren’t to be pitied, but feared and respected… Nothing, from the contemporary rock music to the interweaving of Romany culture, was quite what period audiences had come to expect.
Knight’s slanted take on historical drama was exemplified at the climax of the Peaky Blinders series one finale, directed by Tom Harper. Now, over a decade later, Harper is coming back to direct the long-discussed Peaky Blinders movie, which starts filming in September 2024 in the West Midlands, after being officially commissioned by...

Thanks to a stellar cast, and gripping plot, Heart of Stone is an exciting spy action thriller to watch as the year draws to a close. Although released on Netflix on August 11, 2023, it falls among the movies that flew under the radar this year. However, audiences and critics poorly received Heart of Stone‘s attempt to recreate a James Bond film action theme. Heart of Stone has its fair share of action sequences, with car chasing and gunslinging scenes. Besides mixed to negative reviews, Tom Harper-directed Heart of Stone packed an incredible list of fine actors. These are the top...

Director Tom Harper’s feature films have seen him tackle all manner of unique environments, from the upper stratosphere in “The Aeronauts” to his latest venture, Netflix’s “Heart of Stone,” which sees Gal Gadot’s character, Rachel Stone, go from mountains to desert.
As Gadot told TheWrap, in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, she’d “never eaten that much sand” in her life while making the movie. But to talk to Harper, he found a different element of the production challenging. Harper told TheWrap that prior to shooting, the Swiss location where production was meant to take place saw a massive change in the weather. “On our tech scout, when we went up there to look to the location with all the crew before we started shooting,...

Some popular examples of these Netflix thrillers are The Spy, a miniseries starring Sacha Baron Cohen as an undercover Mossad agent, and Extraction, a film featuring Chris Hemsworth as a black ops mercenary caught in a dangerous rescue mission. While in theaters, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One made waves at the Box Office, Netflix is about to make its own impact with Tom Harper’s Heart of Stone, with a diverse and stellar international cast. This film has garnered excitement from spy action enthusiasts and piqued the interest of Indian audiences, thanks to the inclusion of Alia Bhatt in her debut US film role.

If Heart of Stone has any distinctive visual moments, they all involve a supercomputer called the Heart. The Heart appears in the form of holographic images surrounding operator the Jack of Hearts (Matthias Schweighöfer), who moves around digital objects and zooms in on key details by waving his hands and touching objects. Yes, we’ve seen many similar depictions of supercomputers ever since Tom Cruise stared intensely at future crimes in 2002’s Minority Report and Tony Stark threw hot rod red on his suit in 2008’s Iron Man. Heck, we’ve seen Jeff Goldblum wave his shockingly large hands around cg-landscapes in apartment commercials.
To his credit though, director Tom Harper doesn’t treat the visuals as anything groundbreaking or particularly exciting. It’s just shorthand for superspy technology. In fact, everything in Heart of Stone is superspy shorthand—a recitation of ideas and characters that we’ve seen time and again.

Gal Gadot leads the streamer’s latest ambitious franchise-starter that delivers just about enough dumb summer fun to have us curious for more
There were some impossible calculations made this summer in the making and marketing of Tom Cruise’s seventh mission as Ethan Hunt, the gambit of a gargantuan almost $300m budget yet to prove a decision well-made, the sequel heading for a somewhat destructive financial reckoning. But before the final tally is in, the film’s production company Skydance is hoping for a far easier win with similarly themed thriller Heart of Stone, a potential Netflix franchise-starter, cushioned by lower costs and lower stakes.
There’s also, predictably, a lower level of enjoyment to be had here but given the sky-high bar Cruise has set for the Mission: Impossible series, that doesn’t mean that the streamer’s copycat caper is as unrewarding as one might expect. Netflix...

In the final moments of Tom Harper’s “Heart of Stone”, the Netflix spy caper edges as close as it ever does to a joke. As the various players in the film race to possess the powerful artificial intelligence known as “The Heart” (told you), the tech goes offline, inspiring one character to tell another that the best course of action is to turn it off, then back on again. Ah, if only.
As A.I. chatter starts to consume a fractured Hollywood, it’s only natural that such concerns have already made their way into our movies. Earlier this summer, even Tom Cruise took it on with his “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” which follows super-spy Ethan Hunt as he attempts to steal back an all-powerful A.I. that threatens the safety of the world. Netflix isn’t too far behind the ball, as “Heart of Stone” similarly...

We all know what a MacGuffin is: an object or event that the plot of a thriller hinges on, and which everyone onscreen keeps talking about, yet it has no intrinsic interest apart from how it serves the structure of the movie. The term was mythologized by Hitchcock, and as shorthand for the way a certain kind of movie works it has never gone out of style. But what do you call a MacGuffin that’s so boring the audience can’t pretend to care about it? Let’s call it a MacMuffin.
“Heart of Stone,” a double-crossing espionage thriller that is joyless, convoluted, and sludgy-looking — in short, abysmal — is a movie chockful of MacMuffins. Gal Gadot, working hard to come off as blithe and cool (something one should never work hard to do), plays Rachel Stone, an intelligence operative who is part of a chummy veteran spy team that...
