Orphan Black, Season 2, Episode 7, “Knowledge of Causes, and Secret Motion of Things”
Written by Aubrey Nealon
Directed by Ken Girotti
Airs Saturdays at 9pm Est on Bbca
This week, on Orphan Black: Sarah is terrible at roleplay, Kira is proactive, and Vic is molested by elves
Well then. Looks like the writers shared this critic’s concerns about Leekie as a viable villain. This week’s Pulp Fiction-inspired conclusion may be a bit pat and predictable, but it resolves the show’s Leekie problem while moving Donnie in a new and promising direction (and making fabulous use of “Love Is All Around”). Alison’s relationship with her monitor husband has been a confusing blind spot for the show for most of its run—do they care for each other or has Donnie been playing Alison from the start? The show has tried to have it both ways and...

Orphan Black, Season 2, Episode 4, “Governed as It Were by Chance”
Written by Russ Cochrane
Directed by David Frazee
Airs Saturdays at 9pm Est on Bbca
This week, on Orphan Black: Alison regains her dignity, Sarah has a guardian angel, and Mrs. S gets her groove back
Orphan Black has had a solid second season so far, bringing interesting new developments for most of the characters (and enough fun with Alison to make up for her somewhat lackluster arc). This week, things kick up a notch, with more action and suspense and serious legwork done to prop up the less successful corners of the show. A key element of what works here is the focus of the episode- unlike in previous weeks, “Governed as It Were by Chance” is very much the Sarah show. We spend memorable moments with the other clones, but Sarah is our throughline, digging into the mysteries of Mrs.

BBC America
Orphan Black was the surprise genre hit of last year. It could have been a generic pot-boiler with a dash of underdeveloped sci-fi mythology, but instead we got a nail-bitingly tense series with some compelling twists on old science-fiction tropes. Plus, Orphan Black has introduced the world to the seemingly limitless talent of Tatiana Maslany, who was criminally snubbed at last year’s Emmys.
If you’ve yet to watch the series, now would be a great time to catch up, as the trailer for season two has just arrived online (in advance of the BBC America premiere on April 19th) and it’s absolutely full of teasers for impatient fans. From here on out we’ll be recapping some of the best moments of the first season and looking at some of the questions that need answers this year, as well as picking up on a few titbits from the trailer.
