Netflix users are decrying a “pointless” moment featured in new series Wednesday.
Released earlier this month, the new series is an Addams Family prequel following the character played in the Barry Sonnenfeld-directed films by Christina Ricci.
Starring in the show, which is receiving acclaim, is Jenna Ortega, whose credits include X and the latest Scream sequel.
But its the death of another character that is leaving fans feeling disappointed with the show’s conclusion.
In fact, many viewers are agreeing it was unnecessary and are calling for the character to return in season two.
Spoilers follow – you have been warned*
In Wednesday, Nevermore Academy principal Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie) is killed off.
Speaking to Variety about the series, showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar said that Christie “was such an amazing trooper” after discovering the news.
“She loved it, because it felt very surprising,” they said, adding; “She was totally on board for that.

Liv Ullmann has been an international star since 1966’s Ingmar Bergman’s arthouse hit “Persona”; indeed, she is best-known for her collaborations with Bergman, acting in 10 of his films, and directing two of his screenplays; he was also the father of her daughter, author Lin Ullmann. But there’s more to her than that: She’s written two books, “Changing” (1976) and “Choices” (1979), and, more important, her activism.
Ullmann talked to Variety about acting in Bertolt Brecht’s “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” in Norway early in her career. In a war-torn area, her character discovers an abandoned baby. The director gave her advice valuable both in acting and in life: See things from both sides, and don’t turn away. Her life was changed with another production, the musical “I Remember Mama,” when Broadway shows raised funds for Cambodian refugees in 1979. The lesson then was similar: Don’t turn away.

More than 200 leaders from the fields of public health, medicine, global development, and racial justice, joined faith leaders, economists, Nobel laureates, former members of Congress and artists to sign a public letter calling on President Joe Biden to champion a People’s Vaccine for Covid-19 — a public good that is freely and fairly available to all, prioritizing those most in need at home and around the world.
At a time when millions of Americans and people around the world face the dual-ills of health and economic insecurity, with communities of color facing disproportionate burdens, and where too many households stand only one health crisis away from poverty, it has never been more important to deliver a vaccine that can serve to protect everyone, everywhere.
Signers of the letter include philanthropists Abigail Disney and Chelsea Clinton, singers Gloria Estefan and Sara Bareilles, actors Aisha Tyler, Forest Whitaker, Mark Ruffalo, and Bradley Whitford,...

Heavy-hitter Hollywood talent agency UTA eschewed its typical glitzy Oscar party in favor of a Friday afternoon event — billed as the United Voices rally — in front of their offices in Beverly Hills. Members of the UTA family and other entertainment industry players joined together, they stated: “to express the creative community’s support for freedom of speech and artistic expression, and stand against policies of exclusion and division.”
The idea for the rally was sparked by the recent news that Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi — a UTA client — would likely be forced to skip the Oscars (where he is a nominee for his foreign-language contender “The Salesman”) due to the executive order travel ban that prohibited citizens from seven Muslim countries, including Iran, to enter the United States. Though the ban has been halted, Farhadi announced that he would still not attend the event.

The news of Paolo Di Canio’s dismissal as Sunderland Manager has brought the football-loving populous among us into a state of shock. This early in the season, it appears ridiculous for any club to see fit to remove their manager, as a team’s season is not determined in the first five games of the campaign. Lest us forget that whilst Sunderland’s end of season run-in was not exactly the most scintillating of action, Di Canio’s passion and freshness brought the club three vital wins in avoiding relegation.
Furthermore, the board had seemingly given the Italian, 45, the opportunity to scour the globe for new players, with Sunderland bringing no less than fourteen new players, whilst simultaneously casting out a further sixteen players from Martin O’Neill’s former conglomeration. That much of an overhaul would normally demonstrate a supreme confidence in the manager’s...

Gossip abounds at the Oldie of the Year lunch as the great and good gather to exchange jokes, jibes and a bit of mild filth
Off to the Oldie of the Year lunch and some of the nicest gossip of the year. I bumped into the great children's illustrator Shirley Hughes, who was chatting to the celebrated TV critic Philip Purser, whom she had met only once since they learned ballroom dancing together in Wirral, Merseyside, some 70 years ago.
There was Lord West, the former First Sea Lord (the head of the army told him he envied his splendid title. West replied: "Then you would be the First Land Lord.") The former terrorism minister arrived wearing the first bowler hat I've seen, on a head,...

Lucy Prebble, playwright, 30
Prebble is the creator of Secret Diary Of A Call Girl. Her latest play, Enron, transferred to the West End and Broadway in 2010.
When we were auditioning actors for Enron, they'd talk to the director, not to me, and it occurred to me they thought I was a secretary taking notes. Then one said, "Who's the writer?" and the director said, "She is." This guy just looked at me and went, "You wrote this? Ok..." and nodded. It was beautiful because I felt like he was giving me a lot of respect.
I've always written – diaries, terrible poetry when I was younger, that sort of thing – but I didn't think about showing anyone until I was at university. I fell in with a group of...

The 25-year-old rapper-turned-actor and star of the film Weekender
Who's this handsome devil then? David Miliband, Shirley Bassey's husband, and the bully from The Inbetweeners. It's Henry Lloyd-Hughes, rapper turned excellent actor.
Rapper? I know, so clean cut, so James Dean-esque, but he has a damn fine singing voice and he also plays the drums, hence the guns.
Phwoar. Stop it. You've seen him in Miliband of Brothers and the BBC's Bassey biopic, but look forward to seeing a whole lot more of him in the future – the "period sci-fi drama" Dimensions, co-starring Camilla Rutherford and Patrick Godfrey; Roland Emmerich's Anonymous, on the life of Shakespeare; and Anna Karenina, opposite Jude Law and Keira Knightley. Our favourite role so far is as a 90s raver in the film Weekender.
He says: "I wish I looked a bit more like Bruce Springsteen – I'd love to play him in a biopic of his life.

Who knows what really drove Christine Hemming to act as she did?
Christine Hemming, wife of John Hemming, Lib Dem MP for Birmingham, has been found guilty of burglary – breaking into the home of her husband's mistress, Emily Cox, and stealing a kitten. The incident was caught on CCTV – 16 minutes of tragicomic footage of Mrs Hemming, crawling around on her hands and knees outside the house, standing in the kitchen, then going off with the cat.
It's disturbing on so many levels (what happened to the wretched cat?), but if we are all agreed that Christine Hemming acted like a crazy person, then, in the interests of fairness, shouldn't we be wondering who or what might have made her that way?
This is a mother of three, married for 30 years, forced to endure her husband's numerous infidelities. Hemming fathered a love child with Cox, and runs a second home with her,...

Shooting began in Glasgow this week on new BBC One drama Young James which tells the story of a young James Herriot, the author and vet, while he was a student at the Glasgow Veterinary College in the Thirties. James Herriot's memoirs were previously immortalised in the long-running TV series All Creatures Great and Small starring Christopher Timothy.
Iain de Caestecker (represented by Hamilton Hodell) takes the title role of Young James, a bright, idealistic young man and the drama follows his student exploits with close university friends Whirly Tyson and Rob McAloon.
Iain, himself originally from Glasgow, played Adam Barlow in Coronation Street, and will also be seen this year in the lead role in new BBC Three thriller The Fades.
Scottish actress Amy Manson (represented by Independent Talent) who played vampire Daisy in Being Human, and Fleur in Outcasts, plays Whirly Tyson. And Ben Lloyd-Hughes (represented by...

If ever there was a critic-proof series it’s the unholy Resident Evil canon. After launching the franchise back in 2002, Paul W.S. Anderson went off to make other hit-and-miss movie missiles but kept up the writing and producing duties.
Each subsequent instalment made a packet at the international box office, which only further encouraged the producers. Remember: there’s no smoke without fire, folks.
Well, he’s back in the saddle again, and delivering a pure piece of movie mayhem that is part music video, part video game and about ten per cent actual cinema. Like one of the contorting, mutating zomboid, Anderson’s latest is a true hybrid of aesthetics.
Resident Evil, for all the criticisms levelled against it, actually helped bring the zombie back to life. Arguably the 1995 game did it first, but in movie terms, it was Anderson. Even George A. Romero was attached to direct the...

Late Palme d'Or contender shines light on murky world of security contractors
Cannes welcomed back one of its favoured sons today, and it was Ken Loach as he is best known and loved: gritty, uncompromising and angry. Very, very angry.
The 73-year-old director was a last-minute addition to the competition for this year's Palme d'Or with his film Route Irish, named after the hazardous road that links the green zone in Baghdad to the airport.
Loach told the Guardian that he and regular collaborator Paul Laverty had been trying to find a way of addressing Iraq for some time. "Iraq, to use the old cliche, was the elephant in our sitting room for a long time," said Loach.
"The actual event, the war in Iraq, was so appalling that it takes a long time to see it in perspective." He admits that anger was a motivating force – "anger on behalf...

Hello, you Yanks, Canucks, Aussies, Brazilians and other readers from around the world! You’ll be glad to hear that the volcanic ash which grounded all the planes here in the UK has had no effect on cyberspace, and I’ve managed to wing another edition of Tim Macavoy's Brit Bits over the Atlantic for your reading pleasure.
Thanks for all your comments on the first column, and keep them coming as I want to know what you want to hear about.
To clear up a few things – Yorkshire is great, Will Young does not use a vocoder, although he was inhaling Sulfur Hexafluoride, and no, Gay in the UK has not come to an end. Indeed I hope by now you will have noticed the new episode, full of all the things we’ve been busy enjoying.
Coming up this week we have a Shameless update, a character in My Family comes out,...

Britain's Queen Elizabeth met with prominent Australians to celebrate 100 years of diplomatic relations with the nation last night (18.02.10). A reception was held at Australia House for those with links to the country to mark the anniversary of the appointment of Australia's first high commissioner to the UK, with guests including artist Rolf Harris, writer Kathy Lette and Foreign Secretary David Miliband. Describing the significance of the post, current high commissioner John Dauth told the queen and other guests, including her husband Prince Philip: "When the first of my predecessors, Sir George Reid, arrived in London in February of 1910, your great grandfather was still on the throne. "Since then, of course, we've had five sovereigns, a place occupied...

It's hard to imagine the effects of massive warming, which is why British scientists produced this encyclopedic graphic.
If current warming trends continue, average global temperature will rise by 7°F/4°C by 2060. So what's the big deal?
Actually, you're talking Four-Horsemen-of-the-Apocalypse levels of pain: You'd have failing crops across the world, massive droughts threatening half the world's population, half of all animals and plants dying off, cyclones, and metastasizing deserts. All of which are summarized in this massive infographic by Britain's Met Office. As the Guardian reports:
The map was launched to coincide with the London Science Museum's new Prove it climate change exhibition by David Miliband, foreign secretary and his brother Ed Miliband, energy and climate change secretary. It comes in advance of key political talks on climate change in December in Copenhagen, where British officials will push for a new global deal to curb emissions...The map's release...

Britain's Queen Elizabeth attended a surprise ceremony to mark the centenary of the secret service yesterday (15.10.09). The monarch and husband Prince Philip were among those who gathered at London's Westminster Abbey for the service to celebrate the work of MI5 and MI6. The ceremony was held in the cloisters of the Abbey, and the queen unveiled a plaque in honour of all the secret service staff who have helped protect the country. Also in attendance was UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Foreign Secretary David Miliband, Home Secretary Alan Johnson and the chiefs of MI6, MI5 and Gchq, the signals intelligence centre. Brown said: "Whether in confronting the might of imperial Germany and then the axis powers, bringing the Cold...
