For those of you who have been married, then you know that sometimes it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Now imagine being married to someone that’s a werewolf. That adds a whole new dynamic to the challenges of marriage!
I’ve got a great short film for you to watch today called House of Straw. It was written and directed by Kyle Bogart and it follows the story of a troubled marriage that is on the verge of ending and werewolves play a key role in this story.
It’s six o’clock and Emma has a lot to do before sunset. But a domestic dispute threatens to throw a wrench in the gears. As disagreements turn into accusations, she has precious little time to lock her husband away before their monstrous secret begins to break free.
I thought this was an impressive film and apparently there’s...

"He really just needs someone to be here... for him..." One of the horror short films that played at last year's Fantastic Fest was this short, titled House of Straw, about a married couple dealing with some problems. Written & directed by Kyle Bogart, the film is about a troubled marriage that is on the verge of falling apart, but at the same time this has a twist because it's actually a werewolf story. It's best just to dive in and watch the entire thing and see for yourself, especially if you're a fan of werewolf stories or watching indie short films that come with a great script. This is an impressive little short that shows quite a bit of promise not only with the story but also the production. A feature version of this is already in the works. Have fun. Artois the Goat is a light, breezy, happy film. It’s silly and slapstick at times, and the mood is consistently cheerful. The directors rely on stunning camera shots and physical acting to set the tone rather than an overly wordy script. The characters rarely speak; they don’t need to because everything we need to know is right there on the screen. The whimsical, slightly absurd feeling of this movie reminded me of Amelie at first…the only difference was, Amelie was able to carry that feeling throughout an entire film, while Artois the Goat can’t sustain it.
The film follows the story of Virgil Gurdies (Mark Sheibmeir), a regular guy/cheese lover who works in a lab generating artificial flavor additives. Virgil wants to marry his...

Austin-shot indie Artois the Goat, which premiered at SXSW 2009 (with a live goat at the Ritz and everything) has finally made it to DVD after a long and successful film-fest tour. It's a sweet romantic comedy/foodie film from Cliff Bogart and Kyle Bogart (we sure do love our brother filmmaking teams in this town) that deserves more attention than it's received so far.
Virgil (Mark Scheibmeir) is a lanky slacker who spends his days working in a lab that creates artificial flavorings, and his spare time with the woman he loves, Angie (Sydney Andrews), often enjoying foreign goat cheeses procured (perhaps not entirely legally) by Virgil's mysterious and paranoiac friend Yens (Stephen Taylor Fry). Angie is unfortunately transferred to Detroit, however, and it could be a year before Virgil's company can place him in the department where he wants to work. Angie can't understand why Virgil won't take a job in a different department,...

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
Lineup after the break.
