Wonya Lucas, a veteran media exec who held the post of CEO for Hallmark Media Networks and TV One, has been appointed to Comcast’s board of directors.
Lucas will serve as an independent director, the media company said in an SEC filing. She has not yet been appointed to serve as a member of any board committee.
The Walt Disney Co.’s recent proxy battle and Paramount Global’s ongoing efforts to swing a complicated M&a transaction have put the issue of board composition under a brighter spotlight than usual. For Comcast, a comparatively stable organization, the appointment of Lucas is not coming at a moment of any larger corporate drama.
The appointment of Lucas is noteworthy given her extensive travels in the media business. Apart from Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts, the Comcast board has been notably lacking in media experience. Its 12 directors instead bring backgrounds from areas like finance,...

Comcast is adding a familiar name to its corporate board of directors.
The cable giant and NBCUniversal owner is bringing on Wonya Lucas, the former CEO of Hallmark Media and TV One, as a board member. The company disclosed the addition of Lucas in a securities filing, noting that she will be considered an independent director.
Lucas, a veteran TV executive who worked at CNN and The Weather Channel before running TV One and later Hallmark, stepped down as CEO of Hallmark parent company Crown Media Holdings last year. During her tenure at Hallmark, Lucas focused on building more projects with diverse storylines, characters and themes.
She is also the niece of baseball legend Hank Aaron, an experience that she wrote about in a column for The Hollywood Reporter. Lucas also serves as a director for Atlanta Braves Holdings, the owner of the Atlanta Braves, the team with which Aaron spent much of his career.

For the first time, the Hallmark Channel presented at the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday morning with three panels: one featuring their Hallmark Mystery (the channel formerly known as Hallmark Movies & Mysteries) talent, one highlighting their “Loveuary” film, “Sense and Sensibility;” and the final with the cast of “The Way Home.”
The network has had a presence at the press tour with cocktail parties or receptions for more than a decade, but now was the time to take that a step further, says Lisa Hamilton Daly, Hallmark Media’s EVP of programming.
“I think we felt the range of programming that we had to offer this year was so unique and so varied. I am very respectful of Hallmark’s history, the brand and what they did, but I think they had a very clear function for the movies. A lot were like, everybody has that same...

The Peabody Awards are looking to (finally) host their first in-person Los Angeles awards ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on June 9.
The organization announced a planned move to Los Angeles (from New York) for its annual awards in early 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic and last year’s writers strike have prevented the organization from holding these events in person.
Peabody also announced that it has appointed seven new members to its board of jurors, including Doug Herzog (formerly the president of Viacom’s Music Entertainment Group), Cynthia López (CEO of New York Women in Film & Television), Orwa Nyrabia (artistic director of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam), Russ Schriefer (founding partner of Strategic Partners & Media), Cynthia Tucker (Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist), Mark Whitaker (former managing editor of CNN Worldwide, Washington bureau chief for NBC News and editor of Newsweek) and Andrea Wishom (president of Skywalker Holdings, LLC) to its board of jurors.

The Peabody Awards are trying again for Los Angeles. The Peabody org announced Thursday that it will hold its 84th annual ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Sunday, June 9. This reps the Peabody Award’s return to an in-person event for the first time since 2019, and also its first time in L.A. — having previously been held in New York (and virtually over the past four years during the pandemic and Hollywood strikes).
Last year was actually supposed to be the Peabody Awards’ move out west and return to an in-person gathering after Covid-19 forced the show to go virtual in 2020, 2021 and 2022. But the Hollywood strikes then forced the group to do another virtual ceremony in 2023.

Hallmark Media CEO Wonya Lucas will step down from the role at the end of 2023. The executive helped pioneer a more inclusive programming lineup for the cable network during her three-year tenure. She will continue to serve on the Hallmark Media board of directors.
Lucas joined Hallmark in 2020, replacing Bill Abbott as president and CEO after controversy surrounding his handling of airing an ad featuring a same-sex couple kissing. Increasing the Hallmark Channel’s diverse programming was a priority for Lucas along with diversifying the content that was offered, inking partnerships with Peacock, YouTube and ad-supported platforms.
“I am honored to have led this company and am tremendously proud of the progress we’ve made by creating an evolved entertainment experience that inspires meaningful, emotionally connected moments for our audiences,” Lucas said in a statement. “My passion for the Hallmark brand has grown in deeply rewarding ways and will remain...

After three years at the helm, Hallmark Media President & CEO Wonya Lucas will exit her current role at the end of year, the company announced Tuesday. Lucas will continue to serve on the Hallmark Media Board of Directors.
Lucas, who was named to the post in July 2020, succeeded previous CEO Bill Abbott, who stepped down in January of that year following Hallmark Channel’s controversial handling of an ad featuring a same-sex couple kissing. It capped longtime criticism over Hallmark movies’ lack of diversity.
Increasing representation was one of Lucas’ priorities during her tenure, and she is credited with building a more solid foundation for the business through broadened storytelling with more diverse and inclusive storylines and characters.
Meanwhile, Abbott went on to launch a rival network in Gac Family, now Great American Family, owned by Great American Media, poaching some of Hallmark’s biggest stars to compete for female audiences and ad dollars.

Hallmark Christmas movies remain as cozy as ever, with tree-lighting, cookie-decorating and magical snowfall still the currency of the realm. But since the arrival of Wonya Lucas as the new CEO of Hallmark Media (formerly Crown Media) in 2020, the network’s offerings have branched out in many ways: Lots more diversity, of course — including, this year, Hallmark’s first holiday romance centered on a same-sex relationship and the network’s first film focused on Kwanzaa — but also new and different plots.
The memes show no sign of dying, but the movies themselves don’t always match the traditional roadmap. Two of this year’s new movies didn’t end with a kiss, a change previously unthinkable in Hallmark-land.
How do I know all this? Because I watched all 43 new 2022 Hallmark holiday movies (including the three that premiered in July on Hallmark Channel and the nine that premiered on Hallmark Movies...

Candace Cameron Bure says her new network, Great American Family, does not plan to focus on same-gender relationships in its upcoming movies and projects, as opposed to the Hallmark Channel.
“I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core,” Bure tells The Wall Street Journal in an interview that published Monday.
After making more than two dozen movies, including 10 holiday films, for the Hallmark Channel, Bure left the network earlier this year and now serves as chief creative officer at Gaf.
The Full House alum previously said Great American Media better aligns with her career goals and personal beliefs.
“My heart wants to tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth behind them,” Bure tells the Journal. “I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment.

Just in time for holiday movie binge season, Peacock has cut a deal with Hallmark Media that calls for the NBCUniversal streamer to carry some live linear programming as well as on-demand options for Hallmark’s signature movies.
The deal reflects Peacock’s efforts to broaden its scope under the new management regime led by president Kelly Campbell. She decribed it as a “first-of-its-kind” deal for Peacock, which has struggled with visiblity and traction amid the larger industry battle for subscribers and market share.
“As we continue to make Peacock a premium streaming destination, Hallmark is exactly the type of brand we want to align with,” said Campbell, who is also president of direct-to-consumer for NBCUniversal. “Through this groundbreaking partnership, we’re giving Hallmark viewers a unique viewing experience while continuing to grow our audience, boosting engagement across both brands.”

Hallmark Media isn’t worried about losing talent from their roster. During Wednesday’s Television Critics Association press conference, President and CEO Wonya Lucas and EVP of programming Lisa Hamilton Daly discussed the changes happening at the network with talent heading to competitors, including Great American Family (previously titled Gac).

Hallmark Channel parent company Crown Media has undergone a round of staff cuts.
“As part of a restructure to realign roles and responsibilities, some positions were eliminated,” the company said in a statement shared with TheWrap on Tuesday. “This was done in an effort to decrease redundancies, optimize effectiveness and create more support level roles. With future changes, headcount will be net neutral.”
The layoffs took place on Monday, a person with knowledge of the company’s ongoing restructuring told us.
Earlier this month, Crown Media Family Networks president and CEO Wonya Lucas and head of programming Michelle Vicary were asked by reporters about when Hallmark will have its first same-sex couple lead a holiday movie. Last year’s “The Christmas House” marked the first time the channel included LGBTQ characters and storylines in seasonal movies in a prominent way — but not as leads.
Their answers weren’t direct enough for the TV critics,...

Exclusive: Crown Media Family Networks had a round of staff cuts yesterday.
“As part of a restructure to realign roles and responsibilities, some positions were eliminated,” the company said in a statement to Deadline. “This was done in an effort to decrease redundancies, optimize effectiveness, and create more support level roles.”
The company would not comment on the number or size of layoffs involved. According to sources, about 20 employees were impacted in Media Operations, On-Air Promotion, Research and Administration. The list is said to include long-term Crown Media employees who have worked more than 20 years at the company. Staffers tell Deadline that at the start of the pandemic a year ago, the company had indicated that there would be no layoffs for the duration of the health crisis.
The restructuring comes seven months after Crown Media underwent a leadership change, with Wonya Lucas named president and CEO, succeeding Bill Abbott.

Documentary-packed streaming service CuriosityStream has a whole bunch of factual content — but none that really covers or caters to LGBTQ issues. On Tuesday, top executives at the John Hendricks-founded company vowed that will change.
“We know we can do more in that space and we will do a lot more,” Clint Stinchcomb (pictured above), CuriosityStream’s president and CEO, said when asked about the lack of LGBTQ-focused offerings during his company’s virtual Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press Tour panel.
“We definitely have people in the LGBT community that are in our content and produce our content. We do understand that there are a lot of areas that we want to increase the depth and breadth in,” Devin Emery, CuriosityStream chief product officer and executive vice president, added. “We are excited about the new resources that we have as a company.
