Reality programs and competition shows are common during the summer months of network television. So naturally no one thought twice when Siberia began airing on NBC back in 2013. For most of its first episode, this reality series checked off all the necessary boxes: alliances, enemies, and obstacles. Toward the end of the episode, though, something unexpected happened. The once amiable host, now with a grave look on his face, announced that one of the contestants was dead.
While its artifice was made apparent in NBC’s advance trailer, Siberia still may have come across as genuine to unsuspecting viewers who had been channel surfing. At least in the very beginning. The producers captured all the fine details of actual unscripted television, which include the deliberate pacing and characterizing first-person interviews. Yet once the most likable member of the group, an environmentalist named Tommy (Tommy Mountain), was killed in an accident of some kind,...

Sanford and Son, the first mainstream, primetime sitcom in television history with an almost-all Black cast, debuted on NBC on Jan. 14, 1972. Created by Norman Lear, and starring legendary “blue” comedian Redd Foxx as an African American bigot, it was seen as a direct answer to CBS’ All in the Family. But the Bunker family series was a social satire which took its laughs seriously. The Sanfords presented pure comedy, any lessons it taught were intentionally coincidental. The most controversial part of the show, when it first aired, was its lead actor.
Foxx was already an underground comedy legend when Cleavon Little, best known for his role as Sheriff Bart in Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, suggested him for the lead in the mid-season replacement. Little wasn’t available, but worked with Foxx on Ossie Davis’s 1970 neo-noir film Cotton Comes to Harlem. Before Foxx played the junk dealer stuck with the bale of genuine Mississippi cotton,...

Whilst Madness in the Method may feature Jason Mewes playing an alternate version of his own persona, it doesn’t stop Mewes’ film from being something of a retrospective on his real-life career And life; perfectly blending truth and fiction, life and movie, in a way that makes this film akin to the likes of JFK, American Animals and...

Producer Hayden Fortescue believes his action comedy Broken Contract is the first Wa-shot feature to have been shot almost entirely without paper.
Christopher Morris (Offspring, Crownies) plays Max, a down-on-his-luck club owner who hires a hit man for protection after a local gang threatens his livelihood and his family.
Esther Anderson (Siberia, Home and Away) plays the detective who gets involved after Max.s friends and enemies start disappearing.
Fortescue set out to save money by emailing contracts, Oh&S and medical reports and call sheets, and issuing digital invoices and receipts.
During the shoot in Perth in April/May, writer-director James Pentecost used an iPad that held everything he needed . script, schedules, notes and an app that allowed him to pre-plan the set-ups for every scene.
Dispensing with traditional storyboards, he and DoP Ross Metcalf used the app, Hollywood Shot Designer, to figure out when and where every light,...

Some may say that television hasn’t been too good to senior citizens in terms of their stereotypical depictions. Regardless of the unflattering portrayals there had been some memorable oldsters (in this case over 60) that have given us equal shares of both laughs and cries. In “For Mature Audiences Only”, let’s take a look at some of the more mature characterizations that had an impact on our daily doses of entertainment on the glorious boob tube.
Instead of doing a typical top ten or top twenty listing let’s go in between with a top fifteen selection, shall we? The “For Mature Audiences Only” choices are not necessarily a tasting that everyone will agree on. Perhaps you have your own preferences that were omitted or something that you feel should be added? Anyway, here are the candidates in alphabetical order…

In Broken Contract she.s a detective who investigates threats from a local gang to Max (Offspring and Crownies. Christopher Morris), a down-on-his luck club owner, and his family. “This is just a show… isn’t it?”
You can hear someone asking that question in the trailer of Siberia, a new scripted drama about a reality TV show. (It premieres on NBC tonight, but you can watch the pilot early here.) The answer? Yeah, it’s just a show. But what reality TV program isn’t? Siberia proves that it’s getting harder to tell the difference between a “real” show and a scripted one. But maybe it’s fitting that NBC is combining fiction and reality at a time when so many unscripted events have blurred the lines...

Home and Away star Steve Peacocke has praised Esther Anderson's return storyline in an interview with Digital Spy. The actor, who plays Summer Bay bad boy Brax, promised that there are "really cool" scenes ahead on the soap as Anderson reprises her role as Charlie Buckton. Brax was left devastated last year as his lover Charlie passed away in hospital after being shot, but show bosses have since announced that the popular character will be back for several upcoming episodes. While story details have yet to be officially confirmed, fans are currently expecting Charlie to be back in a vision or a dream. Peacocke told Digital Spy: "I just thought, 'How the hell are they going to do it?' because she's dead! But then I read the material and I thought, 'Wow, this is actually a really cool way that they've gone about it'. (more)...
