When none of us are generous enough to just buy an album (or join his notoriously unwieldy streaming service) there’s been a surge of reinterest as Neil Young makes his dizzyingly dense catalog freshly available on Spotify. Likely coinciding with his greatest exposure in years is the uncovering, by Creep director Patrick Brice, of Hal Ashby’s 1984 concert film Solo Trans, which spans some of Young’s earliest recorded music to then-new masterpiece Trans––my pick for his greatest work, which devoted fans have characterized with words such as “untenable” and “insane”––and controversial rockabilly period, which indeed sounds like a joke from Walk Hard.
Among these performances are skits in the tone of Young’s more-than-a-little-amazing feature film Human Highway, albeit (like most things) not as good as Human Highway. More devoted Ashby auteurists will surely find things to identify as distinctly his; it’s easier to admire...

Found footage horror films have masterfully burrowed their way into the heart of the horror genre, compelling us to peek between our fingers at the screen as they blur the line between fiction and unnerving reality, whispering, “Could this actually happen?” With their handheld chaos and too-close-for-comfort storytelling, these cinematic gems have redefined what it means to be truly scared, proving that sometimes, the most terrifying monsters are those that feel like they could be lurking just outside our windows. If you’re ready to unearth some tapes, we’ve dug up 10 found footage horror movies that master the art of realism, each so convincingly crafted you might just find yourself double-checking those locks tonight.
From ghastly ghouls to paranormal activities, these films utilize hand-held chaos to bring their terrifying tales to life. But what sets them apart? Their unnerving knack for making the absurd feel utterly believable. Forget high-budget...

Special effects legend Greg Nicotero is the creative supervisor on the Shudder series inspired by the George A. Romero / Stephen King anthology Creepshow, he directed more than forty episodes of The Walking Dead, and he’s now an executive producer on the Walking Dead spin-off The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Now Deadline reports that Nicotero will also be executive producing a TV series adaptation of the post-apocalyptic novel Swan Song, written by Robert McCammon. Nicotero will be directing the pilot episode of the series as well.
Coming our way from Monarch Media and Greg Nicotero and Brian Witten’s Monster Agency Productions, this action horror series has this set-up: Following the U.S. government’s nuclear showdown with an unprecedented malevolent enemy, America as it was is gone forever. Now the remaining citizens must fight to stay alive in a wasteland born of rage and fear, populated by monstrous creatures and marauding armies.

I adore found footage movies. From the claustrophobic visuals to filmmakers ingeniously extracting tension from miniscule budgets – nothing gets my blood pumping like some quality epistolary filmmaking. However, after seeing so many of these films, I have no problem admitting that the sub-genre as a whole has a huge characterization problem. After all, Pov storytelling and realistic dialogue make it extremely difficult to really get to know our main characters before shit hits the proverbial fan.
That’s why we’ve come to expect found footage flicks to focus more on plot than characters, as dramatic heart-to-heart conversations aren’t as common in “real” recordings as they are in the hyper-reality of narrative film. Fortunately, some of the more talented filmmakers out there have managed to work within these limitations and still come up with memorable character interactions, with the best example of this being Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass’ experimental classic,...

In one of its first development moves since the end of the writers strike, New Line has hired Blair Butler to write Occupant, the adaptation of a short story by Victor Sweetser.
Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind the critically adored 2022 horror movie Barbarian, is producing the supernatural thriller with frequent collaborator Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon and Scott Glassgold of Ground Control — the latter specializes in the horror short-story adaptation business — are also producing, as is John Poliquin.
The project was the subject of a heated bidding war in February with New Line, the Warner Bros. division that dominates the studio horror space, winning it with a six-figure outright buy.
New Line is keeping the logline locked in the basement, but the story is a spin on the traditional haunted house tale. In this case, when a mysterious old house is moved to a small town,...

Three months ago, we heard that James Wan is developing a series adaptation of the 1988 bestseller Stinger, written by Robert R. McCammon, for the Peacock streaming service. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Patrick Brice, whose credits include Creep, Creep 2, and There’s Someone Inside Your House, is set to direct another McCammon adaptation for Paramount Pictures and Temple Hill Entertainment producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, who were behind last year’s genre hit Smile. The adaptation they’re working on is called He’ll Come Knocking.
Jordan Goldberg and Alex Paraskevas have written the He’ll Come Knocking screenplay adaptation, telling the story of an ex-con who gets a new job in a revitalized factory town in the hopes of turning around his family’s life, only to soon discover that their idyllic suburban dream requires a terrible sacrifice.

As Halloween approaches, people are looking to Netflix to provide the scares.
Luckily, the streaming giant has plenty to choose from when it comes to horror – although, as with anything, not all scary movies are created equal.
Trust in the guidance of your fellow horror lovers and find seven of the best-reviewed horror films on Netflix below… just in time for Halloween this weekend.
1. Creep 2 (100 per cent)
While the gruesome horror film was released in 2017, many viewers are just now discovering it thanks to its place on Netflix.
The sequel follows on from the 2004 cult favourite Creep, a found-footage psychological horror film (also on Netflix) directed by Patrick Brice, who co-wrote the story with Mark Duplass.
In the original, Duplass plays a stranger who hires a videographer (Brice) to film him for a day, explaining that the idea behind the video is to pass it down to his unborn son.

The release of Ti West’s ‘Pearl’ this weekend raises the question of which other horror classics would benefit from the prequel treatment.
Ti West has pulled off an impressive feat in 2022 by not only introducing audiences to Maxine, Pearl, and the world of X, but fleshing it out into its own horror trilogy within the span of a year. Pearl builds upon the ideas that Ti West first explored in X, only to push them in new directions and through a completely distinct filter. It’s a movie that both stands on its own, but also immediately makes the viewer want to rewatch X to view the film with greater insight.
Horror prequels debatably have an even more contentious reputation than sequels do since a lot of the time they rob characters or concepts of their initial mystique and a level of suspense is missing since audiences know what lies ahead on some level.

Patrick Brice will continue hanging around in the horror genre with his next movie Home Before Dark, THR reports tonight.
Brice’s film for Sony will adapt the novel from 2021, written by Riley Sager.
THR details, “The plot of the film, which is in early development, is being kept under wraps, though Riley Sager’s book is centered on a young woman, Maggie, whose family fled their Victorian home 25 years earlier in an event that inspired her father to pen a best-selling nonfiction book claiming they experienced a haunting.
“Maggie, now an adult, doesn’t remember those events and doesn’t believe her father’s book. But when she inherits the old family home after her father’s death, she starts to question if there’s more to the house than she believed.”

The terror of found footage horror is predicated on the notion that the characters that shot it ultimately met a fatal end, which fills you with a sense of dread. It's the anticipation of something bad happening, and the latest found footage movie to fill me with similar, albeit slightly different, unease is "Creep."
Director Patrick Brice ("There's Someone Inside Your House") is responsible for bringing the effectively tense "Creep" films to the screen, both of which star Mark Duplass ("Paddleton") as an enigmatic, well, creep who hires people to film him doing things around his house before unleashing the full extent of his much sinister persona. In the first '"Creep," a videographer named Aaron (Brice) is hired on Craigslist to document Duplass' Josef, a supposedly dying father, throughout an average day in order to leave something behind for his son once he's gone. Every time some seen-it-all critic declares a subgenre to be dead, a movie comes along that makes them look foolish. For many who bemoaned the demise of found footage, "Creep" revitalized it as a mode of storytelling. The low-simmer psychological horror emerged from the mind of director-cowriter-costar Patrick Brice ("There's Someone Inside Your House"), a hodgepodge of his warped Craigslist experiences and love for character-fueled thrillers like "Fatal Attraction" and "Misery." Its story, of a videographer hired to record an increasingly unhinged client, premiered at South by Southwest in 2014 and made its way to...

Halloween has always been a special day for Sydney Park, but this year’s celebration was extra meaningful. Park was not only born on Halloween, but now, she’s a full-fledged scream queen thanks to her teen slasher film, There’s Someone Inside Your House, which Netflix released a few weeks ago as part of its Halloween programming. Produced by Shawn Levy and James Wan, Park wrapped the Patrick Brice-directed film in October 2019, but returned to set in August 2020 to reshoot a few scenes, including the reveal of the masked killer.

A socially conscious “Scream” riff about a killer who takes cancel culture into their own hands (with the help of a taser gun and a very large knife), Patrick Brice’s “There’s Someone Inside Your House” strives to modernize slasher movies for the social media age by suggesting kids today are more afraid of being found out than of being filleted alive. Sure, the stab-happy serial murderer stalking this film’s extremely diverse cast of rural American high schoolers is willing to slit some throats at the end of the night, but it’s their bloodlust for accountability that gets them out of bed in the morning. Likewise, the killer’s teenage prey aren’t terrified by the threat of a maniac in their midst so much as by the idea that someone might know what they deleted last summer. It’s a subtle distinction — far too subtle for — but...

Seldom have the opening moments of a movie been as telling – and as accidentally foreboding – as in “There’s Someone Inside Your House,” Patrick Brice’s adaptation of Stephanie Perkins’s Y.A. horror novel. The very first thing that happens, after the camera settles on a picturesque view of a Midwestern farmhouse, is a dumb jolt: a pickup truck coming into the frame, its roaring engine cranked as loud as possible, the cheapest imaginable jump scare.

Secrets. We all have them. To keep them safe, we hide them behind masks to appear “socially acceptable”. There’s Someone Inside Your House from Creep director, Patrick Brice explores this idea under the clever guise of a 1980’s style slasher. We recognize this familiar and comfortable territory immediately in the opening sequence of the film when hot shot Osborne High School football star, Jackson Pace (Markian Tarasiuk) is being terrorized by an unknown intruder in his home. For those of us who grew up watching Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees silently stalk their prey on the silver screen, like Jackson, we know someone is there but we can’t see them lurking in the shadows. While we sit on pins and needles watching the story unfurl,...

Considering Fantastic Fest 2021 is this writer’s first time back at an in-person festival since Sundance 2020, I’m very excited (and a teeny bit nervous) about getting to spend a whole week indulging in movies from all over the world once again. Later this week, Fantastic Fest will be kicking off on Thursday, and will continue running in-person through September 30th (and the Ff Virtual Fest will begin the very same day).
And even though I’m always pumped for Fantastic Fest’s entire genre-spanning programming slate, there are a handful of films that have already caught my eye, and I thought I’d go ahead and preview 13 titles that I’m incredibly psyched to see as a horror and sci-fi fan. Also, I just wanted to make a note: I didn’t include films that Daily Dead has already covered at previous festivals. Not that they’re not worthy,...

Coming to Netflix on October 6th, we have the new trailer for There's Someone Inside Your House, based on the book by Stephanie Perkins and directed by Patrick Brice.
"Makani Young has moved from Hawaii to quiet, small-town Nebraska to live with her grandmother and finish high school, but as the countdown to graduation begins, her classmates are stalked by a killer intent on exposing their darkest secrets to the entire town, terrorizing victims while wearing a life-like mask of their own face. There’S Someone Inside Your House is based on Stephanie Perkins’ New York Times best-selling novel of the same name and written for the screen by Henry Gayden (Shazam!), directed by Patrick Brice (Creep) and produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster (The Conjuring) and...

We’re beginning to think that filmmaker Patrick Brice is such a fixture in Park City that he deserves a back alley named in his honor. Chances are slim, but he might return for an upteempth time with a project that went into production back in September of 2019. Based on the bestselling novel by Stephanie Perkins, There’s Someone Inside Your House is Brice’s fifth feature film since he broke out with Creep in 2014. Filming took place in Vancouver with Théodore Pellerin, Sydney Park, Sarah Dugdale, Emilija Baranac onboard.

Exclusive: Creep franchise filmmaker and HBO Room 104 director Patrick Brice has boarded The Wild at HBO Max and Warner Max, a project he’ll direct and adapt from the Owen Laukkanen young female suspense novel.
The Wild, from Underlined Paperbacks, centers around Dawn. She’s not a bad person – she’s just made some bad choices: wrong guy, wrong friends, wrong everything. But she wasn’t expecting her parents to pay a boatload of money to ship her off to ‘Out of the Wild’, a wilderness boot camp with a bunch of other messed up kids to learn important “life lessons.” Dawn and the other cubs wind up learning a lot, but not what they expect, for what happens in the woods isn’t what their parents planned. Sometimes plans go very wrong. And this is one of those times. Suddenly Dawn is more scared than she’s ever been in her life.

It’s almost time for one last check-in to “Room 104.” Mark and Jay Duplass’ ethereal HBO anthology series will premiere its fourth and final season on July 24 and IndieWire is exclusively premiering the season’s first trailer.
The half-hour episodes, which hail from the “Togetherness” creators and centers on various travelers who pass through a room in a typical American chain motel, have been compared to “The Twilight Zone” for their deft blend of surreality, horror, and surprises. The series’ new trailer promises to explore a dizzying range of genres and characters for the series’ send-off and even teases a glimpse at the season’s original songs, one of which will be performed by Duplass.
Per HBO, Season 4 will also include the series’ first-ever animated episode, and the premiere entry will mark the first time that Mark Duplass stars, writes, directs, and performs original music for the series. Stories...

The first two Creep films may have gone straight to streaming, but they’ve amassed a huge fan base in the horror community, and even outside of seasoned fright-seekers, their unique mix of comedy, shocks and found-footage mumblecore has been a winner, with plenty of people warming to the brilliant weirdness of it all, and critical acclaim bolstering both projects.
Some are wondering if Creep 3 is still a possibility, though, and in a new interview with IndieWire, co-creator Mark Duplass has offered an update, saying that they’re still working on the threequel …but it’s not been plain sailing.

Yes, it’s that time again. You know the one, where we catch up on all of the theatrical releases that haven’t gotten a review yet in one fell swoop (such is the case during the busy fall season). Today, it’s three very unique films, all hoping to get your attention this weekend. We have the comedy Corporate Animals, the foreign biopic/satire Loro, and the Hollywood drama/thriller Zeroville, based on the acclaimed book of the same name. Each movie has something to offer, but do they all offer enough to warrant a recommendation? Do any? Well, you’ll just have to read on below to find out… Corporate Animals Back at the Sundance Film Festival, buzz was pretty strong initially for Corporate Animals, a satirical comedy. Most of it centered on how Demi Moore would fare in a baity role. Well, Sundance came and went, with middling response to the film.

Friday the 13th may be the day when many horror fans pay a visit to Camp Crystal Lake, but it's also the day HBO invites viewers back into Room 104 for the third season premiere of the thought-provoking (and oftentimes unsettling) anthology series. With HBO kicking off the third season following its debut at the Tribeca TV Festival, Daily Dead took part in a roundtable conference call with executive producer Sydney Fleischmann and co-creator/executive producer/writer/director Mark Duplass to discuss the horror-centric storylines in season 3 (including vampires), the importance of working with innovative filmmakers on the ambitious series (including Creep director Patrick Brice), the challenges (and rewards) of setting an entire series in the same hotel room, and where the ideas for the show come from.
On when season 3 was filmed:
Sydney Fleischmann: We got back and wrapped about a year and a half ago, and then wrapped the post about a year ago.
