“So You Think You Can Dance,” the multi-Emmy-winning dance competition, is finally returning this summer for its long-delayed 17th season, with auditions set for New York City, Los Angeles and New Orleans, Fox announced on Wednesday.
The 16th season premiered on June 3, 2019, and crowned its winner on September 16, 2019. The 17th season was originally set to air in summer 2020, but was indefinitely delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In February 2021, Fox announced the promised season was not happening after all, leaving the show’s future up in the air. But a year later, with the pandemic reaching more manageable numbers, Fox gave the long-delayed season the go-ahead.
This year, the competition is open to “highly skilled dancers between the ages of 18 and 30,” and those who make it to the live show will face “brand-new twists and turns” in the competition.

This week, the Top 10 female dancers who made it through the Academy rounds are paired with an All-Star guy for a choreographed duet. The twist? It is outside their own style. In our live blog recap below, we detail which five will survive and compete on the live shows on the latest episode of “So You Think You Can Dance.
9 p.m. Host Cat Deeley declares that the Academy “was the most grueling week our dancers have ever endured.” I believe she might have that observation on a tape loop – but I digress. “In the end, 20 survived. But it’s not over yet. Tonight, the Top 10 girls must take the stage for the final cut.”
9:02 p.m. The girls will be paired with an All-Star male and a ”legendary” choreographer. If that wasn’t enough intimidation, they must dance in a style outside their usual comfort zone. As Cat says,...

On the season 16 premiere of Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” on June 3, judges Vanessa Hudgens, so nice that she wouldn’t even trash even a garbage can, and hip-hopper supreme Stephen “tWitch” Boss, who was a runner-up on the show in 2008, were gone.
The results of our poll, however, suggest their replacements have already impressed the the show’s fans. In other words, so you think they can judge.
In their place were two well-qualified dance pros who both exhibited abundent enthusiasm about being on the show. Lauriann Gibson, 49, has already made a huge impact on the world of dance by choreographing numbers for the likes of Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Nicki Menaj and Beyonce. That’s some cred right there. But Laurieann truly won me over when she went all fan-girl when she stood next to host Cat Deeley on camera and exclaimed,...

Kick up your heels. The 16th season of “So You Think You Can Dance” has arrived on Fox with a few fresh twists up its leg warmers. There is a cool new set in Hollywood and no more traveling from town to town for auditions. There is a flashy 360-degree camera that freeze-frames dancers in mid-flight. But, most notably, there are two new judges on board.
One is a familiar face to old-school “Sytycd” — third-season contestant Dominic Sandoval aka D-Trix. The 33-year-old B-Boy, who was also an All-Star on Season Seven, was known for his infectious sense of humor, his crush on host Cat Deeley and for regularly dropping his partner, Sabra Johnson, including at least once on her head. He earned judging cred on the seventh season of MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” after his Quest Crew won the third season of the show.

So You Think You Can Dance 2013 Fik-Shun & Amy Yakima won the whole show tonight. Tonight's finale show, kicked off with another group performance from all the top 20 dancers. Then periodically, over the course of 2 hours, the judges selected some dance routines that they wanted to see again. Some of them included: Fik-Shun and Twitch's hop-hop number. Amy and Fik-Shun also did another cool, hip hip routine. They showed new scenes from an awesome new dance movie that's coming out, called, "Battle Of The Year." It includes b-boy dancer, Dominic Sandoval, from season 3. Then dancers from the movie, hit the stage to do a wicked hip hop routine at one point. Haley and Nico hit the stage to do an encore routine. Even the judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy, hit the stage to do a routine, and I was quite surprised to see how well Nigel could move. I...

Sigh. One week after Alex Wong tore his Achilles tendon and was declared Dfy, not only costing So You Think You Can Dance a fan favorite but rendering that entire week's worth of performances more or less moot, Ashley Galvan was on the shelf with a rib injury.
She did not dance Wednesday and will be in the bottom three.
Unlike Alex, her status is likely to remain questionable through tonight, so if she makes it through but still can't dance, she's out of the show. Who will join her on the block?
Here's our take on last night's Sytycd performances ...
Lauren Froderman with Mark Kanemura (Tahitian): High energy, but the first Tahitian display on the show can be summed up as such: "I have no idea what to say." - Nigel
You gotta love this feedback, too: Mia Michaels says Lauren looked like a duck in heat, and...

A pall was cast over So You Think You Can Dance last night after it was revealed that Alex Wong hurt his leg while rehearsing a Bollywood routine with Adechike Torbert.
He could not perform last night.
Best case: He'll recover and perform next week. Worst case: Alex ruptured his Achilles tendon and is Dfy. Sad. He's in the bottom three tonight automatically either way.
Given his popularity, and the fact that fans will sympathize with his injury, we'd say there's little chance he'll be voted out, especially if there's a chance he's on the mend.
If he can't perform next week, however, then he's out for good. Cross your fingers that scenario never comes into play and wish Alex Wong a swift and thorough recovery.
Your Top Eight Dancers: (from left to right) Lauren Froderman, Jose Ruiz, Kent Boyd, the injured Alex Wong, Ashley Galvan, AdeChike Torbert, Robert Roldan and Billy Bell.

18-year-old Lauren Froderman stole the show with her emotional performance on So You Think You Can Dance, but she told us the sad story of why she never wants to do it again
Whoa — talk about a sob session. Lauren Froderman and All-Star Dominic Sandoval’s heart-wrenching portrayal of an abusive relationship on So You Think You Can Dance last night, June 23, took season seven of Fox’s hit reality show to a much deeper level.
The lyrical hip-hop routine, which was choreographed by new Sytycd member Tessandra Chavez to Beyonce’s ‘If I Were A Boy,’ was the stand out performance of the night thanks to 18-year-old Lauren’s realistic portrayal of a girl being abused. But even though judge Adam Shankman praised the normally bubbly blond for becoming “an actor,” Lauren told us she wasn’t actually acting at all.

Really, So You Think You Can Dance? We're big fans and all, for many seasons now, and you look even more amazing in HD (we just upgraded after all these years).
But there was no competition last night, nor did we even get to see what the Top 11 or the All-Stars are really all about - if you missed it, you officially missed nada.
This was like a preseason game after the first three weeks of the regular season. What's the point? Why not jump right into the competition and elimination rounds?
We appreciated the truncated audition rounds, but Thursday was pure filler, no way around it, with random routines and the dancing groups arbitrarily grouped at that.
There were plenty of memorable moves, to be sure, but it was hard to even know who to watch sometimes. If this were the post-show tour, it would've worked more.

With "American Idol" in the rearview mirror, it's time for the reality competition that really pushes competitors to the limit and rarely disappoints. "So You Think You Can Dance" kicks off its seventh season with a two-hour premiere tonight (May 27) at 8 p.m., and with this new season, producer Nigel Lythgoe has shaken things up a bit by bringing in some new twists.
There are a handful of new rules that will switch up the competition entirely. The most notable one sees the jettisoning of the top 20. Instead, they're choosing 10 dancers right away (five guys and five girls) from the audition rounds in Las Vegas. The show will be augmented by a team of 12 "all-stars" — past contestants from different seasons who are "experts" in their particular dance genre. These dancers won’t be judged, and won't be choreographing.
There are a few other twists in store as well,...

Can you remember way back to "So You Think You Can Dance" Season 3?
The season during which B-Boy Dominic Sandoval fell in love with the show's hostest-with-the-mostest, Ms. Cat Deeley?
Korbi TV just caught up with Cat at Vegas Week to discuss "Sytycd"'s upcoming changes, including the return of several "all-star" contestants from years past who will now dance with the Season 7 newbies each week.
As you'll see in the clip below, I ask Deeley if there is anyone in particular she's excited to see again and without hesitation, she answers: "I can't wait to see Dominic. I can't wait to see Dominic. I think he's going to be, if not as cheeky, more cheeky than he ever was before. He's always good to have around 'cause he's really good fun."
Indeed he is.

"So You Think You Can Dance" executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe made a stunning announcement on Monday (March 29), outlining the major changes coming to the dance series this season: Not only will there be just 10 finalists chosen in Vegas, but those finalists will be partnered with a new "Sytycd" alum each week of the competition.
Lythgoe promised to reveal which of the show's "all-stars" have signed on to return via Twitter and he wasn't lying.
"I am thrilled that representing the various dance genres of Popping, Locking, Krump etc in the All-Stars Dance-Pool from Season 4 is Twitch," Lythgoe tweeted Tuesday morning.

While everyone else was interested in the off-stage drama of the un-fianced Maksim and Karina from Dancing with The Stars, the only thing about the Emmy dance routine we cared about was the plethora of So You Think You Can Dance alumni. Backing the Dancing with the Stars (ex)couple were Season 4 alumni Mark Kanemura, Katee Shean, Joshua Allen, Season 3 (and Abdc's) Hok Konishi and Dominic Sandoval, as well as Season 1 and fellow Quest Crew member Ryan Conferido. The routine was even choreographed by So You Think You Can Dance choreographers and occasional guest judges, Tabitha and Napoleon.
And fear not, if you happened to miss the sizzling routine, we've got the video for you.

Full disclosure: I'm a rabid So You Think You Can Dance fan. Every summer for the past four years the talent on display on this show simply blows every other reality competition out of the water. So much so, that one can even overlook the nagging, hetero-cheerleading presence of producer Nigel Lythgoe on the judging panel.
Nigel's peculiar obsession with the masculinity of male dancers aside, Sytycd raises your standards when it comes to dance. I mean, once you start watching this show it is awfully hard to sit through an episode of Dancing with the Stars.
Sytycd is now in its fifth season, and every year we wonder if they can assemble dancers talented enough to stack up against previous season standouts such as Travis Wall, Danny Tidwell, Neil Haskell, and a host of others.
Well, last week the show announced its finalists for the new season, and the...
