Sushi Girl is a delicious film; it perfectly shows why independent cinema is where my heart lies. The film is unusual, it's raw, it's funny, it's gory and it is a damn good time. My experience with watching this film is possibly the most unique one I have ever had.
I met some of the cast Noah Hathaway, James Duval and Andy Mackenzie and the director Kern Saxton at Supanova Expo, after chatting to them I made the promise I'd watch the film that night and return the next day to discuss it. So the very next day I got to discuss the film with those guys again, and also Tony Todd. What a thrill that was, chances like that don't come by often. It was a real pleasure to tell them all I loved the film, nothing beats the smiles and energy that comes with that.

Sushi Girl
Directed by Kern Saxton
Written by Kern Saxton and Destin Pfaff
USA, 2012
Remember that iconic opening scene in Reservoir Dogs, when Steve Buscemi’s Mr. Pink has a scenery-chewing whinge about the audacity and impudence of tipping? Well, imagine if instead of coffee and breakfast on the table there was a fully naked woman with sushi placed all over her entire body, and you’ve essentially encapsulated what it’s like to watch Sushi Girl. Unconvinced? Well, here’s the plot synopsis:
The story follows a band of diamond thieves after a heist gone horribly wrong. One of the gang members, Fish (Noah Hathaway), was arrested and spent six years in prison. The ringleader, Duke (Tony Todd), suspects Fish of hiding the loot for himself and away from the group (which includes Andy Mackenzie, James Duval, and Mark Hamill himself). While confined to a room, there are accusations of subterfuge,...

I never thought I would ever write the following words: Sushi Girl successfully achieves what countless filmmakers have desperately tried to do over the past decade: offer moviegoers the post-millennial equivalent of Quentin Tarantino's debut, Reservoir Dogs. Now, don't get me wrong. The film isn't a rip-off or a satire. It isn't the typical "let's try to do our own version/something as cool" flick that so many directors desperately trying to become the "new Tarantino" have offered us. Sushi Girl is different, and what sets it apart is the fact that it feels genuine. It doesn't try to mimic; instead, it is its own entity, in which you can clearly feel the influence of Tarantino's 1992 classic.
I went into the screening room not knowing anything...

We are now a week into the three week long Fantasia Film Festival, and while we admittedly have been a little behind due to some technical issues with our website, we still managed to get a dozen film reviews published. Keep coming back to our site as we promise twice the amount of articles by the end of week two. In the meantime, here is a round-up of what we’ve seen and written about so far.

Comedy, in its nature and its presentation, has morphed dramatically over the past decade or so, both in North America and in Europe, in particular the United Kingdom. From the more overt, on the nose comedy of yesteryear we have now live in an era in which the comedy is delivered with a completely different version of wit.

Sushi Girl

USA 2012 Fantasia imdb
I saw Sushi Girl under almost perfect conditions: at the Fantasia Film Festival surrounded by more than 700 enthusiastic grindhouse film fans in the presence of the producer, director, writer and virtually the entire cast including Andy MacKenzie (Shoot ‘Em Up), James Duval (Donnie Darko), Noah Hathaway (Atreyu from The NeverEnding Story!), Michael Biehn (!!), Tony Todd (!!!), and Mark Hamill (Not! Enough! Exclamation! Marks! In! The! World!).
How crowded was the theatre? Former Fangoria editor (and longtime friend of Fantasia) Tony Timpone was asking people in the theatre to put their hands up if the seat next to them was vacant, so we could squeeze more people in.
What we saw was a film that is completely unapologetic about its influences and its existence as a artifact of almost pure fan service beginning with its insane cast.

Two stars of " Millionaire Matchmaker " recently made it official -- by tying the knot in one of the darkest, more unique ceremonies we've ever seen. Lovable goth couple Destin Pfaff and Rachel Federoff , who work for Patti Stanger on the Bravo show, got hitched September 24 at The Carlton Hotel in NYC -- but it wasn't your average wedding. The ceremony had a vintage rocker theme, and thanks to photos from high profile celebrity photographer Andre Niesing , we're getting a look at the wild nuptials. Interesting tidbits about the wedding: -The couple's adorable 2-year-old son, Sin Halo Sude Pfaff, acted as both ring bearer and Best Man. -The bride walked down the aisle to "La Vie En Rose." -The cake from Cake Alchemy featured Day of the Dead skeletons of the bride, groom and little Sin Halo. The couple, who initially met on MySpace back in 2005, went to Mexico for the honeymoon.

Kim Kardashian's upcoming wedding has me wondering: How do millionaires like Kim and Kris Humphries meet, anyway? —StarFort, via the inbox I was going to crack some joke about top secret parties where you need to know The Password and every guest must own a Fabergé egg hand-painted with a single strand of mermaid hair, but as it turns out that's pretty close to the truth... For help with your question, I turned to two experts, Destin Pfaff and Rachel Federoff, both of the Bravo TV series Millionaire Matchmaker. The show will embark on its fifth season Aug. 15, and, given that the whole show is about pairing millionaires with their perfect love match, my choice in interview seemed all kinds...

Sushi Girl Teaser Trailer, Sushi Girl Movie Clips. Kern Saxton‘s Sushi Girl (2012) teaser trailer, movie clips stars Mark Hamill, Noah Hathaway, Danny Trejo, Sonny Chiba, and Michael Biehn. Sushi Girl‘s plot synopsis: “Fish has spent six years in jail. Six years alone. Six years keeping his mouth shut about the robbery, about the other men involved. The night he is released, the four men he protected with silence celebrate his freedom with a congratulatory dinner. The meal is a lavish array of sushi, served off the naked body of a beautiful young woman (the “sushi girl”).
The sushi girl seems catatonic, trained to ignore everything in the room, even if things become dangerous. Sure enough, the four unwieldy thieves can’t help but open old wounds in an attempt to find their missing loot.”
This looks like a really good revenge movie: Pulp Fiction, with some True Romance,...

What do you do when your furniture thinks? “Oh my Lord, worst statement I’ve ever made,” laughs co-writer Destin Pfaff when asked about the titular living, breathing centerpiece of the upcoming genre hybrid Sushi Girl (see previous item here). Focusing on a Who’s Who of iconic dinner guests gathered around one lip-smacking plate, the ultraviolent thriller started production March 8. Hit the jump for exclusive photos and Pfaff’s comments on the film’s unorthodox conception.

Directed by Kern Saxton and starring Mark Hamill, James Duvall, Tony Todd, Andy Mackenzie, Sonny Chiba and Noah Hathaway, Sushi Girl - as described by screenwriter Destin Pfaff, sees:
Five friends reunite six years after a diamond job gone wrong to eat sushi off a naked girl. Nothing is as it seems and nothing ever was. Needless to say, being ’70s horror boys at heart, torture, madness and violence ensues. You know, your typical high-octane family film!
Intrigued? With a cast that includes the legends that are Hamill and Chiba, and features the return of Noah Hathaway – aka Atreyu from Never Ending Story - I most definitely am! Well thanks to Styd, we also have the films official synopsis:

When Destin Pfaff’s now-fiancée, Rachel Federoff, asked if she could work with Destin at Patti Stanger’s Millionaire’s Club, the idea took some getting used to. But now Destin might have to come to terms with another family member joining the matchmaking team.
The couple’s 5-month-old son, Sin Halo Jude, seems fated for camera time on The Millionaire Matchmaker, the reality series that chronicles their love-connection business.
“Every time the baby sees Patti, he shrieks like a banshee,” Destin says. “She’s great with him. Sin makes her want a baby.
