There is lots of news dribbling out of Netflix today.
While we don’t have many details, we might as well get the discussion started.
Here’s what we’ve got.
Adam Sandler Revives Happy Gilmore
For fans of Adam Sandler, the movie Happy Gilmore might be one of his greatest achievements.
Golfers rarely get the movie star treatment despite the amount of money that goes to the winners, but this 1996 movie uses adversity to push him toward the big prize.
Today, Netflix announced that they’d be reviving Mr. Gilmore, but little else is known.
Should some of Happy’s old rivals return?
Christopher McDonald played Happy’s rival Shooter McGavin, and he mentioned the project in March.
Whether that means he’ll be along for the ride remains to be seen.

Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson’s return to North Carolina is heading to Netflix.
Williamson’s family drama series The Waterfront has been ordered to series by the streamer. It comes a few months after Deadline revealed that the Scream writer was working on the series as part of a new overall deal with Universal Television.
Inspired by true events, The Waterfront dives into the flawed Buckley family as their attempts to retain control of their crumbling North Carolina fishing empire drive them to increasingly dangerous means to keep themselves afloat.
While much of Dawson’s Creek takes place in the fictional town of Capeside, Massachusetts, it was actually shot in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Williamson was born in New Bern, North Carolina, the son of a fisherman.
He will write and exec produce the series with Ben Fast from his Outerbanks Entertainment also exec producing.

Jessie Buckley has lent her voice to “Three Hares,” the hand-drawn animated short film from BAFTA-winning filmmaker Paloma Baez.
The ecologically-focused film — which has now completed production — was directed and adapted by Baeza from an original story by Hanya Yanagihara, the author of “The People in the Trees,” “A Little Life,” “To Paradise,” and editor-in-chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine.
As the film’s description goes, “Three Hares” weaves an enchanting creation myth and the mystical origin story of the ancient three hares symbol into an environmental tale about three sisters, who must remind mankind to respect the earth in order to protect their future.
Oscar and BAFTA nominee Buckley (“Wicked Little Letters”, “The Lost Daughter”) narrates the film, which also features an original score by two-time Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla and co-composer Juan Luqui (“The Last of Us”).

Fans of the 9-1-1 TV series received the shock of the show in its 100th episode, 9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 4, titled "Buck Bothered and Bewildered."
Some fans may have seen the hints written on the wall throughout the show, while others got caught completely by surprise.
A show of hands; who knew Buck was a closet gay guy -- or at least bisexual at the moment. My hand is definitely down! Shock factor.
Reviews of this new development are a mix of "it's about time" and "Wth" from astonished fans and Buck-lovers.
Is this a one-off thing that wasn't reciprocated by Buck? Or is this a new plot twist that will completely change Buck's character development for good?
There is a lot to unpack after an intense, sexually charged scene. Here are our thoughts on this recent development.

Sony Pictures Classics’ Wicked Little Letters grossed an estimated $1.5+ million in a big second week expansion for the R-rated British period comedy to 1,000 screens from five. The Thea Sharrock-directed film starring Olivia Colman (also a producer) and Jessie Buckley, no. 8 at the domestic weekend box office, has a $1.6+ million cume.
Colman and Buckley have been out actively promoting the film, based on an actual scandal, about a police investigation into the anonymous author of crude letters sent to the residents of a British seaside town.
The number is on the high end of SPC’s expectations, and the Sunday estimate may be conservative.
Audiences for Wicked Little Letters are 60% female, 40% male, with a range of women age 30-plus, unusual for a period film as they skew older. It’s playing especially well in major cities and college towns but also popping in smaller markets like Seattle. Word of mouths is terrific,...

Although some may find the new mystery Wicked Little Letters a bit lax in actual mystery, an incredibly strong cast, led by Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley manages to elevate the film to a wickedly clever piece that makes up for its shortcomings with unabashed enthusiasm and excitement.
Based on an allegedly true story, Wicked Little Letters tells the tale of two women: Edith Swan (Colman) and Rose Gooding (Buckley) who, after Rose is accused of sending Edith and several of the town’s residents several profane letters, set about investigating the crime themselves to prove that Rose is innocent.
Director Thea Sharrock – whose previous feature work includes The One and Only Ivan (2020) and Me Before You (2016) – works from a script that was penned by Jonny Sweet, an actor who has also written scripts for several episodes of the television programs Gap Year (2017), Together (2015), and Chickens (2011). One Tree Hill alum Robert Buckley is a Hallmark fan favorite. He is currently starring in the upcoming Blind Date Book Club. His co-star is none other than Wcth star Erin Krakow. This promises to be an old fashioned romcom that is reminiscent of the classic romcom You’ve Got Mail.
The Oth alum is well-known in the Hallmark world. A few years back, he swooped in and freshened up the hit series Chesapeake Shores. His family’s over-the-top Christmas decoration obsession was the basis for The Christmas House.
However, now he has his sights on Hope Valley. Could Robert Buckley join When Calls The Heart? Here is what he has to say.

Robert Buckley stars alongside When Calls the Heart’s Erin Krakow in the new Hallmark Channel original movie Blind Date Book Club, airing April 6. Buckley has already starred in several Hallmark films and notably played Evan Kincaid in Chesapeake Shores. Could Buckley expand his Hallmark footprint and end up in the Wcth universe? If Buckley has it his way, then yes. While filming Blind Date Book Club, Buckley tells TV Insider, he pitched Krakow ideas for When Calls the Heart characters “because I’m shameless, and this is what I do. It became a bit where I just went, ‘Okay, obviously, I need to join When Calls the Heart, so what’s the role? Am I an inventor?'” He adds, “It sort of became this game every now and then I would just, apropos of nothing, start pitching her a character that I could play on the show. We...

Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker – which was pulled from TIFF in 2022 over “rights issues” — starts a theatrical debut today at the IFC Center, moving to LA’s Landmark’s Nuart next weekend and expanding thereafter with about 85 booking so far — a nice outcome for the mixed-media coming-of-age dark superhero parody that “had gone into into hibernation mode” until Outfest LA Film Festival, said Frank Jaffe, whose distribution company Altered Innocence acquired it then. It’s U.S premiere garnered a Special Mention in the North American Narrative Feature Competition.
Co-written by Drew and Bri LeRose, the film is a reimagining the origin story of iconic Batman villain The Joker, starring Drew as painfully unfunny aspiring clown and closeted trans girl grappling with her gender identity while unsuccessfully attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City’s sole comedy program, in a world where comedy has been outlawed. St. Vincent is tired of singers covering Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” while stripping away its original meaning. In a recent interview with BBC Radio, she called such covers “the worst thing in the world.”
Speaking to host Jo Whiley, the artist born Annie Clark praised “Hallelujah” as an “absolute masterpiece” and referenced how it took Cohen “many years to write” the song.

Wicked Little Letters is one of those truth-stranger-than-fiction tales that remind us that people are weirder than we might think. Director Thea Sharrock opens her comedy/mystery tale with text informing us “more of this is true than you might think,” a comic mystery about on the sudden appearance of anonymous obscene letters sent to various residents of a quiet of early 1920s little British seaside town. The first victim is Edith Swan (Olivia Colman), prim and proper religious spinster who still lives with her parents, and who embodies the last-gasp of the Victorian era ideal of a quiet obedient woman against those uppity women demanding the vote. Mary Shelley's genre novel landmark Frankenstein is one source material that, like Sherlock Holmes, Dracula or Garfield, filmmakers just can't somehow stay away from. Perhaps it's because the story of a man and his creation offers so many potential thematic choices. Or because actors just love playing the stitched-up result of the doctor's work. In this case, we have writer/director Maggie Gyllenhaal offering up the first looks at Christian Bale as the creature and Jessie Buckley as his chosen Bride. Check out Bale above and the other images below…
From the looks of these, Gyllenhaal (marking her second directorial effort after the Oscar-nominated The Lost Daughter) has certainly put a new spin on the classic story (or more accurately The Bride Of Frankenstein).
Your official synopsis runs as follows: A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphonious in creating a companion for himself.

Bale and Buckley star in the pic alongside Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard. The film’s logline reads: A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.
The movie is being produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Gyllenhaal, Talia Kleinhendler (The Lost Daughter), and Osnat Handelsman-Keren (The Lost Daughter). EPs are Courtney Kivowitz (The Lost Daughter) and Carla Raij.
The pic will mark Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort following The Lost Daughter, her screen adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, starring Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, and Jessie Buckley. The film was nominated for three Oscars: Best Actress (Colman), Best Supporting Actress (Buckley), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Gyllenhaal).
The Bride is currently slated for release in IMAX on October 3, 2025. The pic is just the first Frankenstein adaptation audiences can expect on the big screen soon. Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has a Frankenstein feature set at Netflix with Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, and Christian Convery signed on to star.

Our first official look at one of the most anticipated horror movies currently in the works, a new spin on Frankenstein's monster titled "The Bride!", has finally arrived ... and it's nothing like what we were expecting.
Actor/director Maggie Gyllenhaal has long been rumored to be taking a stab at the classic Universal monster(s) and, after the widespread acclaim of 2021's "The Lost Daughter", we most recently had word that the filmmaker had assembled quite an A-list cast of talent for the production. In addition to Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard in various supporting roles, none other than Christian Bale will star as Frankenstein's monster while Buckley reunites with her "The Lost Daughter" director to portray the eponymous Bride. This morning, we got our first look at Bale and Buckley as the monstrous duo and, well, believe us when we say you'll probably need to see it to believe it.

Several months ago, word leaked out that Maggie Gyllenhaal was set to direct a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). Once thought to be set up at the Netflix streaming service, this one is actually happening at Warner Bros., and the studio has set the film for a theatrical release, IMAX screens included, on October 3, 2025. Other filmmakers would make us wait a long time to see their take on the iconic characters at play in this story, but Gyllenhaal has already gone ahead and given us the first look at Jessie Buckley as the titular Bride, as well as Christina Bale as Frankenstein’s Monster. Buckley’s Bride can be seen at the top of this article, while Bale’s Monster can be seen below.

The 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film “Eternals,” directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao, was among the first in that series to meet predominantly negative reviews. It currently ranks at 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and 52 on Metacritic. And one of its stars, “Big Sick” co-writer and Oscar nominee Kumail Nanjiani, took that criticism to heart.
“The reviews were bad, and I was too aware of it,” he said on a recent episode of the podcast “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum.”
“I was reading every review and checking too much,” Nanjiani added, confessing that when the press tour for the film concluded, he ended up on a therapist’s couch.
“It was really, really hard because Marvel thought that movie was going to be really, really well-reviewed,” he explained. “They lifted the embargo early and put it in some fancy movie festivals and they sent us on a big global tour to promote the...

The Lost Daughter co-stars reunite for an embarrassingly unfunny misfire, starring as neighbours at war over obscene letters
There’s something equally impressive and depressing about the squandered potential of misfiring period comedy Wicked Little Letters, a joyless waste of cast, premise and setting which has landed with an almighty thud at this year’s Toronto film festival. A once promising reunion for The Lost Daughter co-stars Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley, it instead represents a regretful low point for them both and for this year’s festival thus far, the only little letter it deserves being an F.
There are plenty of f-words being thrown about in the film, arguably too many, the majority of jokes relying on our shock at hearing prim characters use foul language (!), the novelty of which wears off within minutes. Based on a real-life scandal, it tells the story of a neighbourly feud in...

You’ve seen Women Talking, welcome to Women Swearing: Wicked Little Letters, Thea Sharrock’s fantastically funny feature puts Jessie Buckley and Olivia Colman together in the filthiest pairing since Derek met Clive in the late 1970s. Set in 1920, it’s based on a story that, per the credits, is “more true than you’d think”, which, when you get to the end of it, is quite a claim. Think what a hip, modern and actually funny Carry On spoof of Call the Midwife might look like, scripted by the Coen brothers, shot with a little visual nod to Wes Anderson, and dictated by a screenwriter with Tourette Syndrome.
Throw in a bit of St. Trinian’s moral anarchy (Launder and Gilliatt version only) and you have the runaway British comedy of the year, a sometimes cry-laughing four-letter smackdown that might well benefit from the awards-season envelope currently being pushed...

A version of this story about the Cannes market first appeared in Cannes issue of TheWrap magazine.
Saying last year’s Cannes was a return to normal might have been a misnomer. Sure, Covid was manageable and people were able to gather in person without the mandatory testing of previous years, but the transition from almost two years of isolation back to travel was a slow one. “Even though last year was a pretty robust market, there were still the remnants of Covid and certain territories not traveling,” said Dylan Leiner, Sony Pictures Classics’ EVP of acquisitions and production.
For many traveling to France in May, this year’s festival may finally be the return to normal that people are hoping for. “This may be one of the largest, most attended markets we’ve ever seen for Cannes,” said Jason Buckley, EVP of worldwide sales and distribution for Village Roadshow Entertainment Group,...

Since she first gained national attention in the UK on the BBC talent show "I'd Do Anything," Jessie Buckley has made a memorable impression playing women who find themselves in the company of dangerous men. On the show, she competed the role of Nancy, the tragic wife of abusive Bill Sykes in a new stage version of "Oliver!" Nine years later, she made her film debut in "Beast" as Moll, a young woman who falls for a charismatic drifter who may or may not be a murderer. In the same year, she aided Tom Hardy's brutish protagonist wage his personal war against the powerful East India Company in "Taboo."
More recently, in the Oscar-nominated "Women Talking," she joined an excellent ensemble playing a group of women who are systematically drugged and sexually assaulted by the men in their community. Is it that she's drawn to roles where she can tackle toxic masculinity?...

Remember the first time you heard Jeff Buckley’s haunting vocals on Grace or felt R.E.M.’s emotional wallop through the arrangements of Automatic for the People? City and Colour’s The Love Still Held Me Near hits just like that. But its creation didn’t come easy at all for Dallas Green. The Ontario, Canada, singer-songwriter had to process two deaths during the making of the album. But it’s that grieving that gives The Love Still Held Me Near its heart — even as it crushes yours.

When supervising locations manager Andrew Buckley was looking for the right location to shoot Matthew Vaughn’s third instalment of the Kingsman franchise The King’s Man, Turin sprung to mind. They were coming to the end of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, where they were shooting in Italy’s Aosta mountains in a place called Courmayeur.
“We were trying to tie in a location so, based on the geography of where that was, I started looking what was nearby and I saw Turin and noticed it had these amazing Baroque palaces and infrastructures, not just in Turin but in the whole Piedmont area,” says Buckley. “Turin was just this hidden gem. Although people knew about it, no one seemed to really know how versatile the city was.”

That's no spelling mistake -- "Hamnet" is a film adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's 2020 novel of the same name, not a new movie version of William Shakespeare's famous stage play tragedy "Hamlet". The film is being developed by Chloé Zhao, herself coming off multiple Oscars wins for her adaptation of the non-fiction book "Nomadland." Her other credits include "Songs My Brother Taught Me" and "The Rider," both of which have quasi-documentary qualities similar to those of "Nomadland."
More recently, Zhao directed "Eternals" -- a cosmic gumbo of a superhero epic that, say what you might against it, is one of most visually-accomplished and emotionally-grounded Marvel Cinematic Universe films to date. The point being, Zhao always aspires to make art that is both emotionally and technically complex, and "Hamnet" is certainly a good match for her sensibilities.
