We all owe a debt of gratitude to Stan “The Man” Lee for creating Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, and basically every other awesome comic book character that has come to life from the Marvel vaults. Yes, his celebrity has perhaps gotten a tad ridiculous (and he’s certainly past his comic book writing prime at 89 years old and counting), but you can’t deny how important and brilliant the man was at creating worlds and the characters we grew up loving and are now getting to see on the big screen in all the glory you could hope for.
To tide you over until Iron Man 3, you can check out With Great Power: The Stan Lee story, a documentary about the writer that features interviews with fans, colleagues, and celebrities, including Kevin Smith, Patrick Stewart, Samuel L. Jackson, and Eva Mendes… A lot of big names came out...

Few figures in comic book lore command the attention and devotion of Stan Lee. Now in his late eighties, with a grey-white caterpillar of a moustache perpetually perched atop his upper lip and oversized, dark-tinted glasses, he’s an easily identifiable character, as iconic as one of his pop culture creations (Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and the X-Men, to name a few), and just as important. But many don’t know the story behind the man. “With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story,” a zippy and somewhat superficial documentary, attempts to fill in some of that backstory, and the result is as compulsively entertaining and colorful as any Marvel comic book. Excelsior!
After some sound-bite-y clips from various celebrities (including Paris Hilton, who groaningly calls him “hot”), the film moves ahead briskly, following, more or less, the typical biographical documentary format – lots of talking heads interspersed with historical footage and (in...

The 9th annual Calgary Underground Film Festival will run on April 16-22 at the Globe Cinema with a mix of outrageous comedies, documentaries about controversial personalities, cult flicks and some frank depictions of sexuality.
The fest launches on the 16th with the new comedy by Bobcat Goldthwait, God Bless America, in which Joel Murray stars as a terminally ill man who decides to kill as many stupid people he can can before he perishes himself. Also on the comedic front are Rick Alverson’s The Comedy starring TV’s Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareham as troublemaking urban hipsters; and Mikkel Nørgaard Klovn (Clown) about a Danish loser who takes a young boy on a brothel tour.
On the cult film front are Jack Perez’s Some Guy Who Kills People starring Kevin Corrigan in the eponymous role; Alex Ross Perry‘s abusive sibling flick The Color Wheel; the brutal Father...

He's 89 years old, and his career is hotter than ever. With hits like Thor, Captain America and X-Men: First Class dominating the box office in 2011, and upcoming films like The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man looking to light up the summer in 2012, you'd think that a man whose career in comic books began just prior to World War II might want to slow down. Think again -- because this 89 year-old dynamo is named Stan Lee. This year's Sundance Film Festival offered a smorgasbord of art-house delights, but its competitor across the street -- the scrappy Slamdance Film Festival -- presented one of Park City's best events last week when it hosted comic book legend Stan Lee for a two-hour master class associated with Slamdance's screening of the new documentary, With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story. Just two days after receiving the Vanguard Award from the Producers Guild of America,...

There’s an intimate moment in the feature documentary “With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story” where Marvel Comics bigwig Stan Lee and his wife of over 60 years, Joan, banter about what really motivates him to work so hard in creating hundreds of comic book characters: the fact Joan “gleefully” spends all of his money.

Our main focus at Sundance are reviews of films and interviews with those who make them, but there are also the acquisitions to report on. With the first round of buys in 2012, it looks as though studios have been on a documentary kick.
One of the first moves to be made by a studio this year comes from Sony Pictures Classics, who have picked up the documentary Searching for Sugar Man. This made its premiere on the festival’s opening night, and tells of Rodriguez — or, “the greatest ’70s rock icon who never was.” The crux of the story told by debut director Malik Bendjelloui sounds pretty interesting: That of “two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to their hero,” a journey which “leads them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez.”

Exclusive: While we wait for the offers on Sundance films like The Words, Celeste and Jessie and others to turn into deals, the other Park City festival, Slamdance, has scored a good one. Epix is closing a preemptive deal for With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story, a documentary that makes its Slamdance debut on Tuesday. Lee is the co-creator of hundreds of comic character superheros that include Marvel movie staples Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Hulk, Fantastic Four, Daredevil and Iron Man. I’m told that the documentary will premiere on the pay channel and Epixhd.com, later this year. The documentary covers Lee’s life, from growing up in the Depression to finding his way to become an iconic comic creator during the Marvel heyday. The film features the likes of Tobey Maguire, James Franco, Samuel L. Jackson, Kirsten Dunst and others who’ve starred in Marvel movies. Lee...

Documentaries about Neil Young and Stan Lee and a “lost” television pilot directed by Ed Wood are among the Special Screenings and Shorts Programs that will be featured as part of the 18th annual Slamdance Film Festival, which runs Jan. 20-26 in Park City, Utah. As the festival released the latest additions to its lineup Wednesday, it announced such titles as Jonathan Demme’s Neil Young Journeys; Will Hess, Nikki Frakes and Terry Dougas’ With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story; and Wood’s Final Curtain. Of course, they're only a fraction of the film, which is co-directed by Will Hess, Nikki Frakes and Terry Dougas, and which made its debut at Comic-Con in 2010. As a laudatory biographical documentary it's a very simple and straightforward work, though I think even huge fans of Lee, to whom none of his story is unknown, will get a kick out of all the old photos and TV archives from the '70s especially. Those of us who aren't so familiar with his life learn about his origins as an assistant at Timely Comics through his sometimes difficult partnerships with artist Jack Kirby, the congressional investigation of comics' influence on delinquency, Marvel's financial ups and downs, Lee's disastrous attempt at founding his own company, and obviously his prolific and revolutionary days developing new heroes and titles in the '60s. Obviously the story of Stan Lee is the story of comic books themselves,...

What Stan Lee's comics lacked in subtlety, they made up for in sheer exuberance. The same could be said for the new documentary about Lee's life, "With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story," which shares its subject's gregarious personality and quickness to dismiss controversy. Hardships are addressed but never permitted to dwell in our minds long enough to detract from the bouncy, colorful ride.
Though there are dozens of other interview subjects, from historians to contemporaries to adoring fans (including Paris Hilton, of all people), Lee's first person recollections provide the spine of the film. If the origins of Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the Hulk sound familiar after innumerable repetitions on DVD supplements, at least their presentation looks fresh and vibrant, thanks to beautifully animated renderings of classic Marvel artwork by Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and more. The most interesting material is...
