Mark Goddard, best known for playing Major Don West on Lost in Space, has died at the age of 87.
Goddard’s death was announced by his wife Evelyn Pezzulich on Facebook. “I’m so sorry to tell you that my wonderful husband passed away on October 10th,” Pezzulich wrote. “Several days after celebrating his 87th birthday, he was hospitalized with pneumonia. We were hopeful when he was transferred to a rehabilitation center, but then doctors discovered he was in the final stages of pulmonary fibrosis for which there is no cure.“
When Goddard’s agent first pitched Lost in Space to him, he wasn’t too sure he wanted to be involved. “I said, ‘Gee, I don’t know, I’m not sure, because of the subject matter.’” Goddard said in Tom Weaver’s book They Fought in Creature Features. “And [Goddard’s agent] said, ‘Well, listen, you just do it and don’t worry about it.

End-of-the-year movie awards season is in full swing as we see the release of a film focused on a profession that has had a complex Hollywood history. Often these characters are heroes or villains, with minimal “grey area”. It’s not the police or politicians or even used car dealers. This weekend’s new release is set in the courts, and it’s not basketball, rather the lead is a lawyer. Many times they’re portrayed as sleazy, corrupt “ambulance-chasers”. Or they’re noble ” seekers of the truth” ala’ ninety-plus defender of the innocent Perry Mason, who made a huge impact on TV after becoming an icon in “dime novels”, early “talkies”, and radio. As the wait continues for those dagnabbit major Hollywood studios (AMPTP) to stop dragging their feet and hash out a fair deal with the striking actors' guild (SAG-AFTRA) and writers' guild (WGA), indie wunderkind entertainment company A24 just keeps on trucking along. Although the studio recently elected to delay "Problemista," the feature directorial debut from "Saturday Night Live" alum and "Los Espookys" co-creator/star Julio Torres that picked up lots of critical acclaim from its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival (read /Film's review), A24's Australian horror flick "Talk to Me" continues to do boffo business at the box office and even has a sequel in the works.
Meanwhile, the studio has yet to slow down its marketing for its upcoming slate of films, including "Dicks: The Musical" and the decidedly different sounding "All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt," another film from a first-time feature director that garnered raves at Sundance earlier this year.

Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of Hurricane Katrina, there wasn’t a lot of archival footage of some of the more devastating moments that producers wanted to depict in Apple TV+’s Five Days at Memorial — like when the roof came off the Superdome and the 9th Ward flooding. So VFX supervisor Eric Durst said his team went back “forensically” to research those moments before depicting them in the limited series.
It took nine months alone to re-create the breaching of the 9th Ward levee.
“We had to visualize what that was, the breaching of the lower 9th Ward, where a wave of 12 to 20 feet was unleashed. It was like a tidal wave that wiped out everything in its path,” Durst said at Deadline’s Visual Effects + Screen awards-season event. “We wanted to be as accurate as possible. This event took 1,400 American lives. We had to be very...

Need for Speed It's a pretty bad week for new releases as three out of the four I'm highlighting here are films I never wish to see again, starting with Need for Speed. Despite how bad it is, grossed over $203 million worldwide. However, nearly $160 million of that came from international territories and it seems the studio isn't ready to bank on that market again as a sequel has yet to be announced. From a business perspective it seems they'd do well to look at the success of the Resident Evil franchise as precedent for how to make basically nothing domestically and haul in all the cash globally.
Divergent Divergent didn't do all that bad and it too is an awful movie and the studio is wasting no time in moving forward with Insurgent, which will be in theaters next March. My only suggestion is to never get started so you...

The Good Wife, Season 5, Episode 15, “Dramatics, Your Honor”
Written by Robert King and Michelle King
Directed by Brooke Kennedy
Airs Sundays at 9pm Est on CBS
Full Spoilers For The Episode Below
Sometimes something happens and the world falls apart. Gravity drops out and you are left floating, untethered to your surroundings, separate in a way. Nothing makes sense anymore. The world doesn’t work in the way it’s supposed to and it may never function in that way again. Reality feels unreal, sounds reach you as if they are traveling through water. Nothing can touch you, because if it did, everything would fall to pieces.
“Dramatics, Your Honor” is a landmark episode of The Good Wife by any metric. It is the sort of thing that is difficult to write about, because it is the sort of thing that is difficult to grapple with, period. At all. And especially this early.

Will the doors of Downton Abbey be coming to a close sometime soon? The hit series is currently airing season four in the Us and has already been renewed for a fifth season, but is that it for the Crawleys? Series creator Julian Fellowes told The Wall Street Journal there will be a fifth season of Downton Abbey, but maybe not more after that. "I don't know yet if there is a season six, but it's not going to go on forever. It won't be Perry Mason," he said. Silk PBS Masterpiece
N Conrad
Since Perry Mason debuted, the American TV networks have been overloaded with courtroom dramas. Tonight on PBS Masterpiece, we got to see how these things play out on the other side of the pond. Silk is a critically acclaimed BBC drama about a group of barristers who are competing for the rank of Queen’s Counsel or Silk. Foremost among the contenders are Martha (Maxine Peake) and Clive (Rupert Penry-Jones). Wigs and gowns apart, it soon became apparent that Martha and Clive had very little in common.
Martha is a working-class girl from the North of England who is trying to forge a career in a world that is dominated by aristocratic men. Clive on the other hand is the archetypal London barrister: wealthy, privileged and something of a cad. He uses dirty tricks and connections to win his cases while she uses hard work and the occasional heartfelt outburst.

Has Franklin & Bash become the new Baywatch? I can't remember the last time I saw so many bikini-clad women and shirtless men running on a beach. Not that I'm complaining.
In a case of surfier blackmail led by guest star Eric Balfour, who mysteriously was the only party to keep his shirt on, Peter and Jared ended up defending a local fisherman on "Captain Johnny."
On any other show I'm sure that would have led to a case filled with maritime law and lectures about environmental impact of over fishing.
But this is Franklin & Bash, where defending a fisherman gave us an old TV Guide with Perry Mason on the cover submitted as precedent, not to mention pirates, parrots and the creation of wenching as a verb.
John Ratzenberger was great fun as the judge who shook his head in amusement at what was the circus known as Franklin and Bash.

If you think television has educated you in what prosecutors do, get ready for the real deal.
Shows from "Perry Mason" to "Law & Order" have delved into the work of lawyers, but "Brooklyn Da" -- an unscripted series from the makers of "48 Hours" that premieres Tuesday, May 28, on CBS -- offers a look at New York's Kings County District Attorney's Office, where 500 lawyers handle 1,000-plus cases weekly. Their targets range from corrupt judges to underworld kingpins, and this time, it isn't the stuff of fiction.
"We had done some ['48 Hours'] shows with the Brooklyn Da's office," CBS News veteran Susan Zirinsky, senior executive producer of both programs, tells Zap2it. "Patti Aronofsky is the producer who came to me with this idea, and we were just kind of brainstorming about limited-run series when she proposed 'Brooklyn Da.'

CBS is slowly rolling out on DVD television's longest running show, Gunsmoke. Season 7 (Volume 1) of this 20-year series continues the saga of Dodge City, Kansas, where American western tropes are hashed out—and rehashed—each week. There are cowboys, prostitutes, and outlaws galore in this surprisingly heartwarming series.
Just like Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, too, has an episodic formula. Each episode features a small group of new characters who in some way get involved with Dodge City and the main characters of the show. Usually they cause trouble that requires the attention of Marshal Matt Dillon (James Arness) and almost always results in the death of one of the guest stars. Other main characters include saloon-owner Miss Kitty (Amanda Blake), Doc Adams (Milburn Stone), and Dillon's deputy sidekick Chester (Dennis Weaver). The Sinking of the Laconia
Kieran Kinsella
August will be an exciting month for fans of British TV as Acorn Media are set to release the critically acclaimed BBC Two production of The Sinking of the Laconia. The drama is based upon real events that occurred during World War II when a German U-boat torpedoed a British ship that was transporting civilians and Italian POWs off the coast of Africa. Having initially mistaken the Laconia for a military vessel, the commander of the U-boat was mortified to discover that he had in fact sunk a civilian boat. Breaking with orders from high command, the German commander began orchestrating a massive rescue operation designed to get the survivors to the relative safety of the West African shoreline. The real-life drama doesn’t end there but I don’t want to give the whole plot away so you’ll just have to...

For those that are confused (which would obviously include me) the column that has the url: http://www.soundonsight.org/fantasia-2012-mike-ryans-five-most-anticipated-films/ is actually my column on the five films that I am most upset to be Missing.
This is my column on five seven films that I am most looking forward to:
1) Takashi Miike (For Love’s Sake and Ace Attorney)
For Love’s Sake (2012) Written by Takayuki Takuma, Ikki Kajiwara, Takumi Nagayasu, Directed by Takashi Miike
You really only need three words to sell For Love’s Sake: Takashi. Miike. Musical.
But here are a few more words…
Takashi Miike is beloved by the Fantasia crowd for pushing the boundaries of genre filmmaking in films like Audition, Visitor Q and Ichi the Killer, but I tend to prefer Miike when he is working in a specific sub-genre where he is forced to subvert the conventions at play in more subtle ways,...

Though the 32-old Sarah Shahi seems far too beautiful to be a feisty lawyer like Kate Reed in USA Network Friday night series Fairly Legal, the way she plays against her looks illustrates that she understands her character far too well.
When the series debuted last season, Kate's father has just died, leaving her and the law firm he founded to adjust to his loss just as she changed professions from lawyer to mediator. To work there at his San Francisco firm, she had to endure her dad's much younger wife as heir to the firm and her boss.
With this second season, their tussle involves further twists and a new partner who both abrades and attracts Kate. As the show proceeds, episodes grapple with fairness, winning and the law.
Q: In this role, what responsibility do you feel towards lawyers?
SS: I actually don't feel any responsibility towards [them], to be honest with you.

The Sky News broadcaster has used Twitter to accuse a respected lawyer of 'simpering'. Guess the gender of his target
Just 18 minutes into his appearance at the Leveson inquiry, the Guardian editor-in-chief, Alan Rusbridger, had already been asked where he stood on privacy and the public interest, prior notification and whether subterfuge for journalists was ever justified.
This was obviously not enough for Adam Boulton, the veteran broadcaster at Sky News, who turned to Twitter to harrumph: "The incompetence of #Leveson beggars belief. Why on earth has #womanontheleft been called in to simper at @arusbridger?"
Can anyone remember the last time a man was accused of "simpering"?
No, me neither.
It's one of those words, like "game", "feisty", "sassy", and oh so many more, which are rarely used for anyone male. The online Macmillan dictionary even helpfully provides an example for its definition ("trying to be friendly and pleasant in...

After an intense and disturbing episode last week - let's call it Tate Misbehavin'! - American Horror Story dialed down the intensity last night and instead delivered a soapy tale steeped in Hollywood nostalgia, supernatural terror and high camp.
I of course mean this as the highest form of compliment.
So throw on your best fishnet stockings and fascinator and let's cut this baby apart, shall we? Oh - sorry, Thaddeus, no offense.
On a sunny California day, an old-timey cab pulls up in front of the Murder House. A lady in killer hooker pumps gets out and struts up the walk, passing a woman dragging along a boy in what looks like orthodontic headgear from the Hoover administration. She turns and smiles - it's Mena Suvari! She wears a flower in her hair - and since we already know what role Ms. MeMe has been brought on board to play,...

If you grew up anywhere New York City in the 1950s-1970, Wpix (Channel 11) was an integral part of your life. In its prim, the network offered an eclectic mix of classic re-runs ranging from Three Stooges shorts to Perry Mason, The Addams Family and The Munsters. It was also the home of New York Yankees baseball back when the sport was worth caring about. Bozo the Clown also called Wpix home (though we are always amused by Jerry Seinfeld's rhetorical question: "Why does Bozo need to tell us he's a clown?") The kids shows were introduced by local personalities such as Captain Jack McCarthy and Officer Joe Bolton, who became local celebrities themselves with enthusiastic followings. Wpix also ran the "classic 39" episodes of Jackie Gleason's The Honeymooners literally for decades, thus ensuring younger generations became fans of the program. Click here for a video montage of wonderful moments...

TV dramas used to be fast-paced. Every episode would introduce a new problem — a horrific unsolved crime, a patient with a mysterious illness, a falsely-accused defendant who can only be rescued by Perry Mason — and resolve that problem by the closing credits. That’s all changed in the last decade. A diverse array of brilliant series — thrillers like 24 and Lost, ensemble community-portrait epics like The Wire and Friday Night Lights, interior dramas like The Sopranos and Mad Men — have explored the narrative potential of season- and series-long storytelling.
But there’s a thin line between “ambitiously decompressed storytelling” and “aimless narrative stasis.

Robert Downey Jr. and Warner Bros. are teaming up again, this time to remake "Perry Mason."
The well-known material started out as a novel, then became a radio show, a TV series, a series of movies and another TV series. Variety broke the news, and says that Downey will star as the titular defense attorney who specializes in trial and criminal work. He was most famously portrayed by Ramond Burr from 1957 to 1966.

No one has cashed in their return to glory quite like Robert Downey Jr. Be it starring in films like Sherlock Holmes or Iron Man, or getting offered insanely intriguing projects like Gravity or even spearheading a few here and there like his still-gestating Steve McQueen project, Downey Jr. has become one of the hottest actors around.

Could Lars von Trier have finally destroyed his own career?
The big story
Every week is Lars von Trier week – especially if you're Lars von Trier. But the Danish director, normally so adept at winding up the press and film industry, may have finally put his foot irretrievably in it, have gone that bit too far, gone off the deep end once too often. When he made a crack at Cannes back in May about how he could "understand" Adolf Hitler, I bet he didn't think he'd be fielding questions from the Danish police five months later.
But that is what happened last Wednesday, according to a statement issued by von Trier himself. He said his local bobbies were acting on a "preliminary charge" issued by French prosecutors after his Cannes press conference. Even now, it's not clear if von Trier himself has the full story: the French authorities have...

Has Robert Downey Jr. got the detecting bug? First he pulls off an impressive turn as Sherlock Holmes (“upending the character’s long-standing stuffiness with contemporary verve while nailing the eccentric bent of Arthur Conan Doyle’s great British detective”). Now he fancies his chances as Perry Mason! According to a report in Variety, a Perry Mason film would take place in the 1930s and be set in the “rough and tumble world” of early Los Angeles. They say if you want to get something done, you should give the task to a person who's already busy. Maybe that explains the deal announced earlier Wednesday for Robert Downey Jr. to possibly star in a newly-launched 'Perry Mason' movie franchise. For those keeping score at home, this would be the actor's third active franchise, after 'Iron Man' and 'Sherlock Holmes.' Which made us wonder: does Rdj really have time to star in three huge blockbuster franchises at once? Is he spreading himself too thin? Should we applaud him for his ambitious scheduling or disdain him for monopolizing the limited pool of franchise material out there for fortysomething actors?

Once with his career on the brink of collapse, Robert Downey Jr. has surged to be one of Hollywood's biggest "it" actors; not bad for 46 years old. Is the new film about Allen Ginsberg and the Howl obscenity trial a little too sane?
Allen Ginsberg, who set out to change the world so that he could fit into it, was admitted to the Columbia Psychiatric Institute, in upper Manhattan, in 1949. He was 23. On his first day there, he met Carl Solomon, two years younger but already bearing a history of mental imbalance. Solomon was well-read, with a special interest in the French symbolist writer Antonin Artaud, who had died in a lunatic asylum the previous year, and who Solomon believed had appointed him his representative in America.
The two psychiatric cases sized each other up. "I'm Prince Myshkin", Ginsberg said, alluding to the gentle anti-hero of Dostoevsky's novel The Idiot. The reference would have escaped most inmates, but Solomon got it. "And I'm Kirilov", he replied (from The Possessed). A friendship had begun, which would be immortalised in a declamatory,...

TMZ has learned more than 2 dozen witnesses will testify at Dr. Conrad Murray 's preliminary hearing in the Michael Jackson manslaughter case. Sources say the prelim will last roughly 2 weeks and approximately 30 witnesses will be called. We're told there won't be a "Perry Mason" moment -- instead, prosecutors will lay out their case, piece by piece, to show Dr. Murray acted recklessly by medicating Michael with Propofol and other drugs at his home the day he died.

Hollywood legend Tony Curtis, whose career spanned more than 60 years, has died at the age of 85, it was announced today.
The star, who appeared in more than 100 films, suffered a heart attack at his Las Vegas home.
Among his dozens of screen roles, he voiced a prehistoric version of himself in Stone Age sitcom The Flintstones, which today celebrates its 50th anniversary.
In the cartoon's sixth and final season, which aired in 1965-1966, Wilma Flintstone wins a slave for the day, who happens to be the famous actor Stony Curtis (pictured far right in the image below).
Curtis was among many celebrity voices who appeared on the show; among others, Cary Grant appeared as Cary Granite, Perry Mason as Perry Masonry and Ann-Margret as Ann-Margrock.
Sir Roger Moore, who starred alongside Curtis in TV hit The Persuaders, said: "He was a fine actor. I shall miss him."

David Dortort, who created "Bonanza," the top-rated Western that aired for 14 years on NBC with family values as its centerpiece, died Sept. 5 in his apartment in Westwood. He was 93.
"Bonanza" ran from 1959-73, was the most-watched show on television from 1964-67 and maintained a place in the ratings top 10 for a decade. Dortort also created "The High Chaparral," which originally followed "Bonanza" on Sunday nights on NBC and ran for three seasons.
In 1959, Dortort pitched his show to RCA subsidiary NBC. "Bonanza" would be filmed in color in gorgeous Lake Tahoe, Nev. -- to help promote the sale of RCA's color TVs -- and feature a cast of relative unknowns (Michael Landon, Lorne Greene, Dan Blocker and Pernell Roberts) as members of the Cartwright family.
Dortort went away from the typical Western formula of focusing on lone drifters, choosing to focus on a family of three boys and a father living on the Ponderosa Ranch.

Since Polanski is back in the headlines today with the news that he will not be extradited to the U.S. to face an outstanding warrant for unlawful sexual conduct with a minor dating back to 1977, we thought it might be...

We might be jumping the gun a bit here today, but clearly Avatar is the biggest DVD and Blu-ray release of the week -- even if it doesn't actually hit stores until Earth Day (Thursday). I wonder how many people will bring it home and wonder why they aren't seeing it in three-dimensions? Screenwriter Franklin Thompson has died at the age of 75.
