Donald Trump said that he would “encourage” Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” to NATO allies if those allies don’t contribute enough defense spending to the alliance, and Sen. Marco Rubio seems to be totally fine with that. The Republican said Sunday that he has “zero concern” about the former president’s remarks.
At a South Carolina rally on Saturday, Trump told a story where he claimed that he was speaking to a fellow leader of a NATO member country who asked him what the U.S.

On Monday, four centrist senators rolled out a bill that, if passed, promises to codify Roe, the long-standing Supreme Court precedent that protected women’s right to access abortion for almost five decades. “After the Supreme Court gutted a woman’s right to make personal health care decisions, Congress must restore that right,” Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), one of the bill’s chief sponsors, said in a statement. “That’s why I’ve worked with my colleagues to find common ground on this bipartisan compromise that would do just that.

Linsey Davis is helping to tie things together at ABC News.
You might not see the string during one of her recent hours on the Disney unit’s ABC News Live. On Tuesday evening, Davis’ “ABC News Live Prime” took viewers to Russia to examine how the government was cracking down on citizen protests and spent time looking at Congress’ effort to devise pandemic relief and hold an impeachment trial. Senator Tim Kaine visited for a conversation that wasn’t broken into quick soundbites. In a quarter hour, Davis had taken viewers through just three stories — unheard of in modern linear news. “Thanks for streaming with us,” she told viewers.
Few of the anchors who lead news shows on live-streaming services or social-media outlets are typically part of a TV network’s biggest broadcasts and special reports. Since 2019, however, Davis has appeared alongside George Stephanopoulos and David Muir to help anchor presidential debates,...

A monument honoring the traitor Robert E. Lee was removed overnight from the U.S. Capitol.
The statue of Lee, who commanded Confederate forces in the rebellion waged to preserve the institution of slavery in the South, had been a fixture in the federal Statuary Hall collection for more than a century. The Capitol collection features two monuments from each state, and Lee had been chosen to represent Virginia since 1909, just 44 years after the Confederate general surrendered to end the Civil War at the Appomattox court house.

President Donald J. Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden participated in separate town halls on Thursday. The ratings for Biden’s town hall surpassed the ratings for Trump’s: CNN reported that the Biden town hall on ABC averaged 14.1 million viewers in early Nielsen numbers, while Trump’s NBC town hall, which also was simulcast on MSNBC and CNBC, had a combined 13.1 million viewers.
Though the famously ratings-obsessed Trump did not tweet about the reaction to the event beyond claiming that his event received “very good reviews,” Biden press secretary Tj Ducklo argued in a tweet that Biden’s favorable ratings were due to voters being more interested in listening to the former vice president’s plans for responding to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Wednesday night’s Vice Presidential debate was a lively affair, as Kamala Harris described the Trump administration’s response to Covid-19 as “the greatest failure of any presidential administration in the history of our country.”
Perhaps partly due to the fact it was far more watchable than the Trump-Biden debate, the Harris-Pence affair attracted a much larger audience than the 2016 debate between Pence and Tim Kaine. According to Nielsen numbers, around 50.5 million viewers tuned in last night across the four major broadcast networks and three cable newsies. That’s up more than 35% on the previous VP debate. The 2016 contest scored the smallest television audience for a vice-presidential contest since the year 2000, ending up with 37 million total viewers all told.
Looking at the individual networks, Fox News came out on top with 11.3 million total viewers, followed by ABC with 9.4 million. CNN came third with 7.3 million viewers, while MSNBC finished just ahead...

As a candidate in the Democratic primaries, Kamala Harris stood astride the fault lines of the Democratic Party. The Californian presented herself as an establishment politician (reaching the Senate after serving as San Francisco’s Da and California’s attorney general) whose platform was responsive to the idealism of the party’s grassroots. Harris backed the Green New Deal, a version of Medicare for All (albeit with some vacillation on the details), and marijuana legalization. Harris embodied a classic Gen X straddle: She’d navigated a path to power through a system controlled by older,...

With declines in advertising revenue devastating news organizations across the country because of the coronavirus pandemic, 14 U.S. Senators have signed a letter urging Senate leaders to specifically “include payroll support for digital-native news professionals in the next Covid-19-related legislation.”
The letter is endorsed by the Department for Professional Employees, AFL-CIO, and the WGA East, which represents staffers at online news outlets such as HuffPost, Salon, Slate, Vox Media and Vice Media.
“The Covid-19 pandemic’s economic devastation has rippled out to the news industry,” the senators wrote today in a letter to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Charles Schumer. “Initial reporting estimated a 51% decline in spending on advertisements over March and April. When Americans stopped shopping, retailers stopped advertising. When Americans quit traveling, airlines and hotels quit advertising.
“This pause in advertising has hurt digital-native news outlets in particular. These organizations rely primarily on advertising revenue to pay the bills.

Coming off of what looks to be his best debate performance so far, Joe Biden is heading back to Hollywood next month for a major fundraiser, if he is still running.
Facing a virtual do or die in Saturday’s South Carolina primary, the former vice president will be hosted by Sherry Lansing at her Los Angeles home on March 4. Co-hosted by the former veep’s one-time Senate colleague Dianne Feinstein and cabinet hopeful L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, tickets for Biden’s latest visit to the Hollywood Atm range from $1,000 to the individual legal maximum of $2,800.
The former Paramount Pictures CEO has long been an active contributor in Democratic circles, including a July 2016 sit-down with VP nominee-to-be Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine.
Of course, with the fundraiser coming the day after Super Tuesday, once front runner Biden may not even be in the race by the time the Lansing event rolls around.

“Hillary” has one helluva title sequence. Set to The Interrupter’s 2014 banger “Take Back the Power,” the hard-and-fast intro flashes photo after photo of Hillary Clinton’s face, pausing on the smiling Illinois toddler before flying into her fight for women’s rights at Wellesley College, her time in the Senate, years as First Lady, half-decade as U.S. Secretary of State, all the way through to today.
For a biographical documentary, this kind of rapid encapsulation may seem rather simplistic, even trite. But what makes the sequence so watchable, time and time again, is that Clinton’s eyes never move. The montage’s unchanging focal point is aesthetically absorbing, sure, but it also serves as the window into director Nanette Burstein’s wider argument: Much of what’s kept Hillary Clinton from her purpose in life is beyond her control.
That contention by itself is sure to inspire debate — because,...

Senator Edward J. Markey has become the fifth Senator to sign and share Taylor Swift's viral Change.org petition – with over 423,000 signatures – asking the U.S. Senate to pass the Equality Act.

Hours before the first Democratic debate, where candidates are poised to answer questions about Lgbtqia issues, Markey submitted the following statement on the topic:
“As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, we see how much progress the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (Lgbtq) community has made to advance equality. But we must also recognize how far we as a nation still must go. Iatse president Matt Loeb is hailing Tuesday night’s election returns as “a victory for working people all across the country,” saying that “Iatse-supported candidates won in almost every state where we competed.”
One of those winning candidates was Democrat Katie Hill, who unseated Republican Steve Knight in a tight congressional race in Southern California. Iatse’s political action committee contributed $5,000 to her campaign, but it also gave $1,000 to Knight, who conceded the race today.
The vast majority of its Pac’s nearly $450,000 in campaign contributions went to Democrats, but it also gave $2,500 to incumbent Republican Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, who narrowly defeated Democratic challenger Scott Wallace in the race to represent Pennsylvania’s 8th congressional district. It also gave $2,500 to the campaign committee of Bob Goodlatte, the outgoing Republican chair of the House Judiciary Committee, who did not seek re-election.

Update, with New Rules Halloween video The hashtag “#MAGAbomber” came for Cesar Sayoc Jr. nearly as quickly as his arrest today, but Bill Maher reached back a couple years for something a tad more classic.
“Is it okay to call this one deplorable?,” Maher asked during his opening monologue on tonight’s Real Time With Bill Maher. “Or would that hurt Republicans’ feelings?”
Maher would eventually get to his annual gripe about politically correct (or not) Halloween costumes, but first he had some laughs to squeeze from that mail bomber – and there were more than might have been thought possible as early as yesterday.
Maher’s deplorable joke was topped by a well-delivered line from tonight’s opening guest on the HBO show, adult film actress and Full Disclosure author Stormy Daniels. “I got the first package,” she said, “and sadly mine went off.

Today, President Donald Trump announced that the United States will be pulling out of the historic Paris Accord, an agreement on climate change and environmental policy, signed just over a year ago by then-Secretary of State John Kerry. Every country in the world but Syria and Nicaragua signed the agreement.
It didn’t take long following Trump’s announcement (which he gave jointly with Epa chief Scott Pruitt) for the reactions from famous names to start rolling in.
Politicians, of course, spoke out. Former President Barack Obama said that the U.S. was no longer a global leader when it comes to climate change.

The agreement – which was negotiated by former President Barack Obama two years ago – was a focus of Trump’s campaign, with the longtime businessman arguing that it was a burden on U.S. consumers and energy producers.
Stars and politicians alike turned to Twitter to express concern over abandoning the agreement, with Chelsea Handler writing, “Yeah, who cares about climate change? Only every single person with a child.

Donald Trump is firing back at critics in the media who say he he’s lost credibility over his contradictory claims surrounding the firing of former FBI director James Comey.
In his latest tweet storm Friday morning, the president threatened to “cancel all future press briefings” — suggesting instead to “hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy.”
His words came minutes after NBC correspondent Nicolle Wallace — a former White House communications chief during the presidency of George W. Bush — told Today that members of Trump’s administration have “zero credibility.”
“I cannot overstate how extraordinary it is,” she said.

Trump’s Syria Strike Finds Surprising Allies–and Some New Opponents: Who’s For It and Who’s Against?
Donald Trump‘s sudden decision to launch a cruise missile strike on a Syria government air base has divided the country and the world – with some of Trump’s former foes supporting the move and some of his allies opposing the attack.
Before the missile salvo, Hillary Clinton expressed her support for such a move, saying at a New York event on Thursday that the nation should “take out air fields” so he can’t “use them to bomb innocent people,” CNN reports.
However, Clinton’s 2016 running mate Tim Kaine split with her, condemning Trump for launching the attack without approval from Congress.
