“I don’t want you to go home, so you’re going to be my comeback artist!” Keys said on Monday's show, surprising the nephew of acting icon David Cassidy and son of Patrick Cassidy.
"I brought Jack back because I know we haven't seen what I've seen,” Keys explained to cameras. “When I hear him sing, I hear something really unique."
During their coaching session, Cassidy admitted that there had been a “disconnection” between his private performances for Keys and his delivery in front of the show’s live audience.

Mere days after George Michael was found dead in his home on Christmas day, friend and fellow music superstar Sir Elton John paid tribute to the later singer with an emotional performance of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”—which the pair sang together in 1990. Now John has honored the singer on his Beats 1 show, Rocket Hour.
“Not only was he a good friend, but he was probably one of the most brilliant songwriters this country’s ever produced, and certainly one of the best vocalists ever,” he told listeners. “One of the best in the world.

George Michael may not have had a discography to rival his fellow peers like Madonna and Prince — he released only five studio albums as a solo artist; three with Wham! — but his influence on pop music is undeniable. He scored two Grammys, eight No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, four MTV VMAs, and sold more than an estimated 100 million records worldwide. It’s been a strange season of The Voice — and not just because of Gwen Stefani’s penchant for pairing torturous heels with tights.
But despite the almost constant shift in contestant momentum and often head-scratching results (Damien over Toia Jones in the Knockouts? Ryan Sill in the Top 8?), something kind of miraculous occurred during tonight’s performance finale: NBC’s reality singing behemoth finally took on its most obvious shortcoming — that it’s never produced an American Idol-level superstar — and did something that may very well obliterate all those “what’s the point of all this, anyway?” criticisms.

After spending the last two weeks in a hospital bed recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident, George Michael went home on Wednesday (May 29).
The “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” crooner was taken to the hospital on May 16 after the Range Rover in which he was a passenger went off the road.
Though at the time his rep told the media Michael has suffered only “superficial cuts,” the first responder’s claimed the 49-year-old sustained a head injury.
Confirming his release from the medical facility, a message was posted to his official website stating: "We can confirm that George Michael has been discharged from hospital and continues to rest and recuperate. He is well and thanks everyone for all the messages of support."...

This week was full of surprises, so let’s get right to it …
Some highlights of this week’s episode, “Adaptability”
Warning! Spoilers ahead.
Aylin & Charlie: "Let’s hug it out!"
The week begins with Aylin and Charlie deciding to put their budding flirtation aside and focus on the competition. Good idea when you’re on a televised reality competition. They seal the deal with an awkward brother-sister type hug/shove.
Mentor/casting director Robert Ulrich announces that this week’s theme is adaptability, something a performer on Glee will need in spades.
Michael (center) intends to shine this week
Michael is very excited because he thinks this theme will help him be more spontaneous and stop overthinking his performances. Mario thinks he’ll do well with the theme, while Lily isn’t thrilled about it. Then all of the contestants find out that they have to sing the song solo.

Last month, while interviewing executive producer Nigel Lythgoe for a story about possible changes to American Idol for its upcoming eleventh season, I proposed the idea that the show should introduce a list of 11 songs that would be banned from the live performance rounds on the grounds that they’ve been done to death in previous seasons. Lythgoe’s response caught me off guard: “Well, Mike, if you want to write down and send me 11 songs that you don’t want to hear again, I will put them through to the committee.”

The Voice saved the best for last. No, the show is far from over, but the Battle Round concluded last night and the field was cut to 16 hopefuls after four memorable duets featured perplexing costumes, stirring vocals, and a kiss that would’ve made Mitch & Mickey proud.
Jeff Jenkins dressed down for his duet of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” with the more-Elton inspired Casey Desmond, but boy’s got pipes to get away with it. Xenia and Sara Oromchi were tasked with a difficult song, “I’ll Stand By You,” that wouldn’t be any teen girl’s first choice.

Thank heavens The Voice has named its 16 finalists for Season 1 and is moving on to the live performance rounds next Tuesday, because I’m not sure I could take yet another pre-taped “Battle Round” edited to have less suspense than a Kate Hudson romantic comedy.
Indeed, like an amateur poker player, The Voice‘s production team has a classic “tell”: Whenever a mentor is shown having a sit-down motivational chat with only one half of a head-to-head matchup, said singer is guaranteed to come out on top.

The sixth week of "The Voice" sent four more contestants home while presenting a drama on stage. Curtis Grimes planted a kiss on the lips of his duet partner Emily Valentine (both from Cee-Lo Green team) at the end of their performance of Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now", making the celebrity mentors' jaws drop.
The song was a fit for country boy Grimes, while Valentine had to reach a little out of her rock comfort zone to perform it. Cee-Lo then picked Curtis to go to the live shows, and join Nakia, Vicci Martinez, as well as Tori & Taylor Thompson.
For the final battle round, Adam Levine put Jeff Jenkins against Casey Desmond to sing Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me". The judges were torn between the two, but Adam finally dropped his choice on Jeff. He joins Casey Weston, Javier Colon and Devon Barley.

Tomorrow night marks American Idol’s Top 3 night, that time during which we wave goodbye to the unwelcome third wheel (see ya, Nikki McKibbin!) or the sentimental favorite we were hoping would miraculously end up in the finals (why’d you have to leave, Elliott Yamin?). Come Thursday night, we’ll learn which season 10 Idol joins the ranks of McKibbin and Yamin — and Locke, Trias, Solomon, Doolittle, Mercado, Gokey, and James — but, before then, why not see what previous Idols did right, and very very wrong, during Top 3 night? Which were the best and worst performances on Idol, and how...

Where is ousted Idol contestant Pia Toscano’s broken heart set to go? Why, as we learned last night, right over to ABC’s studios to perform for next Tuesday’s Dancing With the Stars. Idol rejection doesn’t look so bad on the girl, huh? So, now, the key question is: What should the former Idol contestant sing?
It’s safe to assume that the singer will do what she does best: perform a ballad. (And any of the following would impress on the ABC show: “I’ll Stand By You,” “All By Myself,” “Where Do Broken Hearts Go,...

Pia Toscano, the former contestant of "American Idol" who got booted last week, reportedly has inked a record deal with Interscope. A source told Us Magazine that the 22-year-old aspiring singer is preparing to hit studio soon and going to rush her debut album. However, the rumor was denied by her representative.
Talking to E! Online, the spokesperson said that the rumor is not accurate. The publicist spilled the beans that Interscope, which is chaired by "Idol" mentor Jimmy Iovine, wants to produce Pia's debut single and then release it while "American Idol" is still running. Although the rep confirmed that Pia has indeed been approached by Interscope, no record contract has been signed just yet.
If the deal is sealed, Pia will follow the footsteps of fellow "Idol" outcast Chris Medina who dropped a single via the label just a few day after his elimination. While Chris talked about...

How did you spend your weekend, Idoloonies? I spent mine blasting the studio renditions of the American Idol Top 11′s forays into the Elton John songbook. The good news? My marriage survived 17 consecutive spins of Haley Reinhart’s “Bennie and the Jets.” A couple of these tracks might actually make their way into my regular iPod rotation. The bad news? Well, um, you’ll just have to read my takes on all 11 recordings, won’t you? Ch-ch-check ‘em out, then post your own reviews in the comments. You can’t teach an old Dawg new vocabulary words, but pretty much everything else on American Idol‘s daft, delightful tenth season is subject to frequent, sometimes thrilling change. On Wednesday night’s Elton John-themed performance telecast, Naima Adedapo and Stefano Langone adopted unexpected and unusual accents. Ryan Seacrest got a daring (unfortunate?) new ‘do, and one contestant was allowed to utter the phrase “hardcore bangage” without so much as a bleep. Heck, even Nigel Lythgoe embraced the mood, putting his favorite punching bag Haley Reinhart in the pimp spot and not dousing her with a bucket of...

Glue a wig to your head and put Eminem on speed dial because it's Elton John week on "American Idol X: Ballads Or Bust."
The Top 11 returned to primetime because Casey Abrams was saved last week. ("Saved" in the "Idol" sense, mind you. Lord knows if he's accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.) Producers were keen on trumping up the drama as much as possible, even going so far as recapping last week's results show with a graphic that mimicked a screenplay. "Hope has been renewed. But no more second chances," the Courier font typed out. Because if there's one thing us diehard "Idol" freaks love, it's having Nigel Lythgoe imply that last week's intense results were manufactured by a writer. Whoops!
The Top 11 also stopped by Entertainment Weekly for a photo shoot. Some of them even got makeovers. All that was missing from this "America's Next Top Model...

var brightcovevideoid = '873370539001'; On American Idol Wednesday night, the stakes escalated, and re-escalated, as the top 11 from last week all performed once again, with two slotted to be eliminated Thursday. That's because last week, in a conclusion of frenzied excitement, Casey was voted off and then saved. "Truly an incredible moment," Ryan Seacrest said. The show was devoted to the music of Elton John, a man with a talent for seamless pop songwriting and a taste for flamboyant showmanship. The surprise triumph of the night was Haley, whose performances have generally been among the most criticized by this season's very indulgent judges.

American Idol paid tribute to Elton John last night, and may have found a couple new contenders in the process.
First, Haley Reinhart surprised us by closing the show, an honor typically given to a contestant that has generated more buzz than the young woman many believed would be eliminated last week.
But Haley proved worthy of the concluding spot, bringing the sexy with a cover of "Bennie and the Jets" that started with her lounging on a piano. Randy called it the best of the night.

Lauren Alaina, meanwhile, was up to the challenge of John's classic Lady Diana ballad, "Candle in the Wind." She made the single her own by infusing it with some country twang.

Who else stood out? Which two contestants are in danger of elimination tonight?
James Durbin brought the heat to his cover of "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting.

I’m not usually her biggest fan, but Haley Reinhart had the performance of a life time on American Idol March 30. I bet even Elton John would love her version of “Benny and the Jets!”
Elton John night on American Idol always makes me nervous because I don’t think anyone other than him can do those songs justice. However, in keeping with the magical, mystical Season 10, the majority of the Top 11 contestants held their ground — and a new front-runner even emerged from the pack.
Throughout the last several weeks, I’ve enjoyed the recordings of Haley Reinhart’s singles, but her actual live performances have been inconsistent — and far from the strongest in the group. That said, the 20-year-old Illinois-native Wailed on her rendition of “Benny and the Jets” and had even the biggest cynics (yes, I’m talking to you, Mom) tapping their toes. It was no wonder...

From Naima’s reggae risk to Casey’s stripped-down shot at redemption, American Idol vocal coach and arranger Debra Byrd and associate music director and arranger Michael Orland had a great deal to say about the Top 11 (take two) performances for Elton John week. For 10 seasons on Idol, Byrd and Orland have been on the front lines with the contestants, from Hollywood Week to the grand finale in May. The two work with the contestants on their respective songs, helping them learn how best to shine on the Idol stage and in front of a national TV audience. As we...

Grandmas were given mad props by judge Steven Tyler tonight, as the show tipped the creative hat to Elton John as Jimmy Iovine mentored the kids on how to present their take on each selected number. Of note: Pia Toscano knocked everyone out with her .Don.t Let the Sun Go Down on Me. as Tyler told Randy she could handle the ballads, or anything for that matter. Lauren Alaina sang .Candle in the Wind. and Tyler again won the quip contest, joking she could afford the rest of her dress (a cut off front train dress) singing that good. James Durbin and his crusty hair rocked in .Saturday Night.s Alright (for Fighting).. Haley Reinhart nailed her hot...

What a schizophrenic "American Idol" school year it has been, and our report cards have been correspondingly all over the place. One week Casey Abrams is up, a few later, he's collapsing into Ryan Seacrest's tender embrace after narrowly avoiding a trip home. Jacob Lusk and Stefano Langone have each taken their place at the head of the class, only to tumble to the low end of the grading curve.
What to make of all this Gpa upheaval? Well, "Idol" is a damn hard class. Consistency from performance to performance is just as important as excellence on any given evening. And excellence we most certainly had on Wednesday, as the contestants took on Elton John's oeuvre. So too,...

"American Idol" paid tribute to Elton John on March 30 with eleven contestants. Scotty McCreery opened the night with one country song from the British musician, "Country Comforts". Judges said his performance was "very nicely done." Jennifer Lopez told him, "You have amazing instincts about performing and about what's right for you," and Randy Jackson said he felt like they were at Scotty's concert.
Tweaking the theme to fit her style, Naima Adedapo added a reggae twist to "I'm Still Standing". But J.Lo and Randy were not into it. J.Lo said, "Some songs aren't meant to be flipped," while Randy thought it came off "kind of corny." But Naima still got positive comment from Steven Tyler who liked her choice of tunes.
Paul McDonald chose "Rocket Man" which he performed with his band once and found "it was a disaster." He rocked the song this time, but it could...

Even though most of the contestants tonight sang ballads, I have to admit it was an interesting episode. I thought for a long time: did I want to review from worst to first? Do I split the contestants into In Danger, Needs to Improve, Still Treading Water, and Finally?
The last time Elton John night happened, it was a complete mess. While tonight wasn't quite as good as last week, it was a solid effort by all eleven contestants. That said, I think it's clearer who is going to be going home the next few weeks.
So in order:
Scotty McCreery: “Country Comfort” I can't help it. I love this kid. I'd put him in the Still Treading Water category, only because he still needs a lot of work on his phrasing. That said, I love that he found the one Elton John country song, sang it with ease and confidence.

The "American Idol" contestants are back in a Top 11 due to the save being used last week on Casey Abrams. Now they're tackling Elton John - let's see how they fared.
When the judges arrive, Tyler and J.Lo are looking particularly feftching tonight. Tyler's got his best "Saturday Night Fever" outfit going and J.Lo's dress is to die for - she is disgustingly beautiful sometimes. Like, she's always beautiful, but then sometimes it's just too much. Seacrest is also dapper in a blue suit. At least Randy isn't wearing a sweater, we guess.
Before we get to the performances, I just have to comment - does it seem like J.Lo has to sit in the middle not because she's a girl (so that it alternates boy-girl-boy), but because Steven Tyler often wants to strangle Randy Jackson with one of his many scarves? Just me?

With apologies to Elton John, American Idol‘s Top 11 are still standin’, and the Idoloonie Nation has good reason to shout “yeah, yeah, yeah.” Indeed, after last week’s Judges’ Save spared Casey Abrams and gave us a Top 11 redux, a “sing for your life” spirit seemed to infect the bulk of the season 10 finalists tonight. For the second straight week, we didn’t witness a single catastrophic performance — pause here to fondly remember Camile Velasco violently assaulting Elton’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” back in season 3 — and better still, several singers delivered legitimate Idol Moments.

On the one hand, if American Idol has any hope of matching the crazy musical goodness of last week’s Motown performance show, going with the Elton John catalog is a pretty safe bet. On the other hand, the last time Idol dedicated an episode to the music of Elton John, way back in Season 3, it was pretty much all kinds of a mess — the man’s melodies are simply really challenging to pull off. Two contestants will be eliminated this week, too, so song choice will be crucial for the Top 11 Take 2′s chances to move forward, especially...

"American Idol" top ten plus one
Photo: Fox
Theme nights are always tricky, and on Wednesday (March 30), the "American Idol" top 11 had to take on the imposing catalog of Elton John. Some soared and some crashed, and a couple of recent cellar dwellers — Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart — appeared to pull themselves out of the fire with gutsy performances.
As always on non-country theme weeks, the question was "What is Scotty McCreery going to do this time?" He made the obvious choice, the obscure "Country Comfort," which he picked because it had the word "country" in it, but also because it's one of Elton's only country-leaning tunes.
With lyrics about grandmas and factory closings, it was pretty much what you'd expect: a Vince Gill-esque, aw-shucks acoustic amble accented by pedal steel and piano — with a shout-out to his real granny!
