A friend of mine who’s a devoted carnivore told me that he had no interest in seeing the food documentary “Eating Animals,” because “when I hear that title, it makes my mouth water.” He is, in other words, not the target viewer for a lesson in vegetarian fortitude. Actually, though, he’s got the movie all wrong. If the phrase “eating animals” makes your mouth water, then you are, in fact, the ideal audience for this documentary investigation into where our meat comes from. The movie, loosely adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s 2009 memoir and narrated by Natalie Portman (who is one of its producers), isn’t a sanctimonious veggie harangue. Directed by Christopher Quinn, it is, at certain moments, almost a love letter to the time-honored splendor of the carnivorous impulse.

The late M.C. Escher, the Dutch artist whose recursive graphics continue to trip out fans, never got to diagram the dysfunctional relationship between online publishers and Google. But my, what fun he would have had drawing the latest turn of events here. Irony has piled on irony in a circle of confusion only an Escher could hope to portray.
To begin with, the battered publishing industry is asking for an antitrust exemption so it can band together to better negotiate with Google. Publishers say they need the exemption because Google has built a near-impregnable position astride the lucrative business of search-based advertising. That position exists because there are gaping holes in the very same, wildly outdated antitrust laws from which the publishers are seeking an exemption.
On top of that, the news organizations seek an exemption from a Congress and, especially, an administration that have been notably hostile to the media’s mere existence.

The holidays bring plenty of delicious treats but naturally, with the good also comes the bad. We’re talking stale panettone, crushed or burnt cookies and, of course, the dreaded fruitcake.
Whether you enjoy the season’s saddest staples in their original form or not, there is no doubt room for improvement. So we enlisted the help of acclaimed food writer, Mark Bittman, to help us transform them. His Eggnong Panettone Bread Pudding (recipe below) from his latest cookbook, How to Bake Everything, kills two birds with one stone and would be a delightful breakfast to wake up to.

With the luxuries of modern-day dining devoured by the dead in the zombie apocalypse, you’ll have to arm yourself with a whisk as well as a shotgun in order to live. Lauren Wilson’s The Art of Eating through the Zombie Apocalypse gives survivors culinary knowledge to help battle the hunger pangs prevalent in a zombie-ridden world, and BenBella Books has provided us with a set of preview pages.

When the zombie apocalypse tears down life and society as we know it, it will mean no more take out, no more brightly lit, immaculately organized aisles of food just waiting to be plucked effortlessly off the shelves.

Beyonce is many things -- pop star, style icon, mother, wife, an all-around fabulous and fierce woman -- but a hypocrite? Bey doesn't think so, despite what some critics are saying.
Since Beyonce was a big part of Michelle Obama's fitness campaign, Let's Move, her recent $50 million promotional deal with Pepsi raised a lot of eyebrows -- namely because Pepsi has long been criticized for targeting children with sugary, unhealthy drinks with negative long-term health effects.
"Knowles is renting her image to a product that may one day be ranked with cigarettes as a killer we were too slow to rein in," Mark Bittman wrote in his piece in the New York Times, 'Why Do Stars Think It's O.K. to Sell Soda?' "From saying, as she once did in referring to Let's Move, that she was 'excited to be part of this effort that addresses a public health crisis,...

Beyonce Knowles Carter was a big part of Michelle Obama's Let's Move fitness campaign, a decision that would later be called into question when the singer signed a complex, $50 million promotional deal with Pepsi.
Like Coca-Cola, Pepsi has long been criticized for targeting children (and adults) with sugary drinks that, when consumed in excess, have negative effects on long-term health. In a new interview with Flaunt, Beyonce soft-handles the idea that her involvement with both the First Lady's plan and Pepsi constitutes blatant hypocrisy:
Some were critical at your participating in a Pepsi campaign after you moved your body for childhood obesity. Where is the balance between your career objectives and your philanthropy?
Pepsi is a brand I've grown up seeing my heroes collaborate with. The company respects musicians and artistry. I wouldn't encourage any person, especially a child, to live life without balance.

Gwyneth Paltrow may be one of Hollywood's go-to leading ladies, but she also makes a mean bruschetta. THR reports the "Country Strong" actress is currently in negotiations to star in the indie "Blood, Bones & Butter" -- based on Gabrielle Hamilton’s foodie memoir.
The movie --which seems in some ways similar 2009's "Julie & Julia" -- will follow Hamilton’s peculiar road to becoming a chef. The successful foodie is the proud owner of Prune, a restaurant in New York City.
