Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights to first-time Lebanese director Mounia Akl’s timely drama “Costa Brava, Lebanon,” which launched positively last year from Venice.
“Costa Brava” provides an acerbic take on Lebanon’s waste management crisis and its turbulent political landscape and combines the country’s strife with the global climate crisis.
The darkly comic drama pairs Oscar-nominated Lebanese star and filmmaker Nadine Labaki (“Capernaum”) and Palestinian actor Saleh Bakri (“The Band’s Visit”) as a couple who has moved from Beirut to live idyllically in the mountains, until one day the government decides to build a garbage landfill right beside their house.
After bowing from Venice “Costa Brava” segued to the Toronto and London fests, where it won prizes.

Let’s get this out of the way immediately – Return to Sender, a so-called “thriller” that exists solely to capitalize on the icily serene beauty of star Rosamund Pike, is no Gone Girl. Artless, queasy and agonizingly dull from first frame to last, it’s more akin to a particularly ugly Lifetime Original Movie than that delectably vicious cult phenomenon or really anything with which you’d expect to see a star of Pike’s caliber associated.
And yet, director Fouad Mikati somehow landed the Oscar nominee – whose deer-in-headlights terror on screen could easily have been elicited by her realization that Return to Sender will always lurk on her IMDb page. She plays dedicated nurse Miranda, who tends to her patients with practiced precision but shows none of the same enthusiasm for her love life. Miranda, unfortunately, is a pancake-flat character, made ever flatter by Patricia Beauchamp and Joe Gossett’s howlingly awful script.

Harder Candy: Pike Headlines Predictably Exploitative Rape Thriller
It seems Rosamund Pike is now the girl most likely to…. exact ruthless retribution on her instigators, if judging from the latest indie thriller Return to Sender, unfortunately arriving on the heels of her Oscar nominated success in last year’s comparably themed David Fincher film, Gone Girl. But the pedigree of auteur assistance is not on hand with Fouad Mikati’s sophomore effort, his first film since 2010’s Operation: Endgame. Somehow, he amassed a rather respectable cast for this grindhouse knockoff that could have easily premiered on Lifetime if Pike hadn’t suddenly become such a hot commodity. To be fair, we’ll have to wait another year or so to appreciate the actress in some higher quality offerings, and by then this will most likely be forgotten about.
Surgical nurse Miranda Wells (Pike) seems to have a bright future ahead of her.

After scoring an Oscar nomination for her riveting turn in "Gone Girl," Rosamund Pike is back in "Return to Sender" -- and once again, she's got revenge on her mind. Directed by Fouad Mikati ("Operation: Endgame") and co-starring Nick Nolte and Shiloh Fernandez, the film stars Pike as Miranda, "a dedicated nurse, exquisite cake maker and impeccable friend" whose world is shattered when she is brutally assaulted on a blind date. Even after her attacker, William (Shiloh Fernandez, "Evil Dead"), is convicted and locked away for the crime, Miranda can’t overcome the fear and trauma enough to put her orderly life back together. Desperate for closure, she reaches out to William – first through letters, then prison visits – and slowly builds a relationship with him. But when William is paroled and comes looking for her, Miranda seizes the opportunity to exact revenge. In advance of the film's August 14 release in theaters and on VOD,...

For almost the entire running time of this movie, we have no idea what it is about. What is it trying to say? What sort of story is it trying to tell? I’m “biast” (pro): love Rosamund Pike
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
In my head I’m calling this film What Is This I Can’t Even: The Movie. It works at least as well as the blandly generic and not even really apropos Return to Sender, which describes a tiny section of the second act that then resolves itself and has no further bearing on the story. In fact, the bearing it does have on the story hardly makes any sense at all, not on the level of plot, character, or theme. Not that the plot, characters, or putative themes make any sense on a whole-movie level,...

"You expect me to cry, scream, say 'dear God, why me?!' ...That's not me." The first trailer for Return to Sender has debuted, and we probably wouldn't be interested if it didn't star Rosamund Pike (of Gone Girl, The World's End, Jack Reacher). The plot is simple: A nurse living in small town goes on a blind date with a man who is not the person he says he is. Pike plays that "meticulous small-town nurse" and it looks like she's got some fun tricks up her sleeve, too. The cast includes Rumer Willis, Nick Nolte and Shiloh Fernandez. This doesn't look particularly impressive, but at least maybe the performances will be good. Here's the first official trailer for Fouad Mikati's Return to Sender, found on YouTube: From the original casting story on THR, the script is about "a meticulous small-town nurse (Pike) who falls victim to a...

Last fall, Rosamund Pike gave cinema the classic kind of crazy we haven't seen in some time with her turn as Amazing Amy in David Fincher's "Gone Girl." Ruthless, cold, and calculating, she knew how to rig any situation to her benefit, leaving a string of men ruined in her wake. And now, the actress is once again going down the path of vengeance in "Return To Sender," and the first trailer is here. Granted, this movie doesn't look particularly good. Directed by Fouad Mikati ("Operation: Endgame"), and co-starring Shiloh Fernandez, Rumer Willis, and Nick Nolte, the story follows a woman who is viciously assaulted, and then goes on a mission to reclaim her life. It looks like pure B-movie material, but without the precision of Fincher, or the subtext in his movie. But still, Pike looks to be acting circles around everyone else, so maybe it'll be worth tuning in for that.

You.d think people in movies would know better than to go out on blind dates nowadays, but they just keep on doing it. Do they ever work out? Chicago – As someone who has often gone home with a straight-to-dvd action movie that I hadn’t heard of before entering the video store, I know how easy it is to get drawn into something that looks a little bit left-of-center. “Operation: Endgame” is undeniably unusual but that doesn’t mean it’s any good.
DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0
Knowing that it’s the only strength of the film, Anchor Bay and the team behind this truly odd action-comedy hybrid have put most of the cast on the DVD cover including, clockwise, Ving Rhames, Brandon T. Jackson (“Tropic Thunder”), Odette Yustman (“The Unborn”), Rob Corddry (“Hot Tub Time Machine”), Joe Anderson (“The Crazies”), Jeffrey Tambor, Ellen Barkin, Zach Galifianakis (“The Hangover”), Maggie Q (“Mission: Impossible III”), and Emile de Ravin (“Lost”).

Director Fouad Mikati's Operation Endgame throws a variety of strange and frequently pointless twists at you, but the general story is this: What if there was an office -- a drab, windowless, glumly lit administrative hellhole, filled with full-blown psychotics trying to kill each other? Before the building explodes? That's the essence of the film. There's a top-secret government organization called The Factory, comprised of two factions of operatives, the Alpha and Omega teams. From what I could tell from the film's somewhat cryptic opening exposition, both groups work as spooks and killers for the Us government, but actually spend most of their time working against each other.
Regardless, the film takes place on the first day of a new recruit, Fool (their codenames are all based on Tarot cards), played capably by Joe Anderson (who, after seeing him in The Crazies, I've realized is an absolute friggin' chameleon...

Hey everyone! Sorry I was not around last week I took a mini vacay but now I am back! I am sure you all had plenty to read with Comic-Con and all! Anyways, there's not too much coming out this week but here's a few for you!
Clash of the Titans
If he is to save the life of the beautiful Princess Andromeda (Alexa Davalos), the valiant Perseus (Sam Worthington) -- born to a god but raised as a man -- must lead a team of intrepid warriors on a quest to battle a host of powerful, beastly enemies. This sweeping fantasy epic, a remake of the 1981 hit, also stars Liam Neeson as Zeus, Ralph Fiennes as Hades, Danny Huston as Poseidon and Gemma Arterton as Io.
Starring: Sam Worthington, Alexa Davalos
Director: Louis Leterrier
This was not as good as the first one in my opinion. Worth a watch though.

The first thing you are likely to notice about Fouad Mikati’s “Operation: Endgame” is that the cast is a bit nuts. Rob Corddry, Ellen Barkin, Ving Rhames, and Zach Galifianakis are the big guns, but it also involves Jeffrey Tambor, Maggie Q, Odette Yustman, Brandon T. Jackson, Emilie De Ravin, Bob Odenkirk, and Adam Scott. That’s quite a list, especially for a first time director. But when the writer has the last name Levinson, and the producers list “Donnie Darko” and “Capote” on their resumes, I guess your project gains some additional clout in the casting department. The only name listed above the title that I don’t at least recognize to some degree is Joe Anderson. Apparently he was in the remake of “The Crazies” and “The Ruins”, among other things. Here he plays the Fool, the closest thing “Endgame” has to a protagonist, and it is...

Operation: Endgame PosterListen to this eclectic cast for the action thriller Operation: Endgame: Odette Yustman (Cloverfield), Ving Rhames (Dawn of the Dead), Ellen Barkin (Brooklyn's Finest), Adam Scott (The Vicious Kind), and Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover). With so many recognizable faces one would think this film would be shown in theatres, but no that is not the case. Instead, Operation: Endgame might show in a few theatres July 16th before going, basically, straight-to-dvd a couple weeks later. That is right; Anchor Bay Films will not risk a theatrical showings for unknown reasons. Those interested in government cover-ups, espionage, intrigue, and inter-government warfare will have to find their entertainment on the little screen beginning July 27th. This seems like a missed marketing strategy, but regardless, the red band trailer for the film is below with more casting details inside.

It's pretty rare for a movie with this many stars to go straight to DVD, but after playing in only a handful of theaters, Operation: Endgame will do just that. Directed by Fouad Mikati and starring Joe Anderson, Rob Corddry, Ellen Barkin, Odette Yustman, Zach Galifianakis, Emilie de Ravin, Maggie Q, Adam Scott, Brandon T. Jackson, Beth Grant, Bob Oedenkirk, Michael Hitchcock, Ving Rhames, and Jeffrey Tambor, the trailer for Operation: Endgame, which is a comedy-action flick, was just released--and it's definitely not safe for your children to watch. (Mostly due to large amounts of profanity.) The movie is about a war between rival government spy cells after their boss is assassinated. The DVD and BlueRay release date is set for July 27, 2010. In our first true TrailerWatch post in awhile we crawled the web until we found 2 trailers for the same movie, one green and one red. When we watch the trailers we got really excited about the film. Operation: Endgame features the likes of Rob Corrdry, Ving Rhames, Zach Galifianiks, Maggie Q, Adam Scott, Bob Odenkirk and Jeffrey Tambor.
According to other websites who have posted the trailer this project was listed under another title during its production called Rogues Gallery. The film is basically, an action-comedy that sees two teams of government spies pitted against one another. I have to say these trailers have come out of nowhere. What is even the bigger kicker is that this movie is not getting a theatrical release as it will go straight to Blu-ray and DVD.
Are you kidding me? I mean all of these dudes in the film are mega comedy stars now.

Ok, so the title kind of sucks. Operation: Endgame is somewhere between a Queensrÿche album and a direct-to-video Dean Cain action movie. And the story -- the quick-witted band of deadly killers -- is getting a little over-used, between The Losers, The Expendables, Red and whatever else is out there. The project is a first for the director (Fouad Mikati), and both screenwriters (Sam Levinson and Brian Watanabe).
But goddamn it, this trailer just worked for me. I'm not under the illusion that it's going to be great -- but I do think there's a good chance that Operation: Endgame will be entertaining and pretty damn funny. It also has the world's most bizarre cast -- Maggie Q, Ving Rhames, Joe Anderson (who was the best part of The Crazies), Jeffrey Tambor, Odette Yustman's ass, Rob Corddry, Ellen Barkin (who is still ruthlessly bringing the sexy), Bob Odenkirk, Brandon T. Jackson,...

My Thoughts: I’ll admit, as a film critic, I like to get off my high horse every so often and watch a brainless comedy. Hell, more than every so often. This movie looks like it’s got potential to be something worth watching, but it also could easily be a clear cut case of “use everything that’s funny to get people in,” which is a pretty common tactic. Still, it’s an exciting opportunity, that’s for sure. I’m not terribly excited about Corddry, because I’ve never been a big over-the-top kind of humor guy, but it looks like he’s put to good use by the end of this trailer. However, the ultimate surprise are these people being used that I had...

Random spies beating the ever-loving hell out of each other with some comedy in there, I guess that's pretty appealing. The interesting new trailer for Fouad Mikati's "Operation Endgame" just popped up on the Internet today and boasts a surprising cast list for a film that's clearly making it's way towards DVD sometime soon. Several groups of underground spy teams decide to duke it out with each other once the boss is killed. The cast includes Zack Galifianakis, Emilie de Ravin, Ving Rhames, Ellen Barkin, Odette Yustman, Maggie Q, Rob Corddry and Jeffrey Tambor."Operation Endgame" comes out in limited theaters later on this month. When it was announced earlier this year that Anchor Bay had picked up the theatrical and DVD rights [1] to an action-comedy called Operation Endgame, I wondered why we hadn't previously heard anything about a movie that starred such big names as Zach Galifianakis, Rob Corddry, Ving Rhames, Maggie Q, Bob Odenkirk, Emilie de Ravin, Adam Scott and Jeffrey Tambor. Now this week the first trailer has arrived online, and I gotta say, it does have a certain low rent direct-to-dvd quality to it. That's not to say that I don't think it has potential, but you can definitely tell this isn't a studio release. The story revolves around two teams of assassins who work for the same organization but turn against each other when their boss is murdered. On the bright side, it seems like the movie might be a bit edgier because of its indie roots. The red band...

Happy July 5th, everyone! I’m sure plenty of you are doing like me and taking it easy after having celebrated your independence from sobriety. So here’s a little mindless treat for those of us who are having trouble thinking straight today. Warning, video is Nsfw:
I was pretty surprised to see this trailer because, well, I hadn’t heard anything about this movie. It’s got Rob Corddry and Zach Galifianakis in it, who are undoubtedly the best parts of Hot Tub Time Machine and The Hangover, respectively. It seems like a pretty fun twist on the “rival badasses” genre, throwing foul-mouthed and unprofessional assassins at each other over the course of one tough day at the office. And on top of everything it’s got Maggie Q, who’s just seconds away from exploding into a mega-star with the latest Nikita series. So why is this movie so buried,...

I’ve been following Fouad Mikati’s “Operation: Endgame” from the very beginning, back when it was still called “Rogues Gallery”. It now looks like the film is headed to DVD after a brief theatrical release at the Laemmle’s Sunset 5 Theaters in Los Angeles starting on July 16th. Yup, just one theater. If you aren’t able to catch it then, the film will be arriving on DVD and Blu-ray on July 27th courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment. No trailer yet, though, which is disappointing. THR reports that Anchor Bay Films has picked up North American distribution rights to the actioner “Rogues Gallery”, which has apparently been retitled “Operation: Endgame”. A lesser title, if you ask me. The directorial debut of Fouad Mikati, the film stars Joe Anderson, Zach Galifianakis, Rob Corddry, Odette Yustman, Emilie de Ravin, Maggie Q, and Ellen Barkin. The plot is pretty nifty, and centers around two rival teams of government assassins working out of a top-secret underground facility that clash when their bosses are assassinated. The film definitely has the makings of a crazy free-for-all action movie, and going by the presence of guys like Galifianakis and Corddry, you can probably expect some laughs, too. Anchor Bay is looking at a third quarter 2010 release date for the comedy-actioner. There hasn’t been anything seen from the film so far, so this pic of Odette Yustman will have to do. You’re welcome.
