The Sundance Film Festival, which began its 11-day, 119-title run on Thursday night with a few low-key screenings, is best known for indie films like "Winter's Bone" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild," both of which catapulted from obscurity to Oscar contention in recent years after debuting here.
But it's also a major testing ground for documentaries -- especially those that appeal to viewers who share festival founder Robert Redford's liberal political outlook.
This year, the prestigious U.S. Documentary Competition offers left-leaning viewers a broad array of reasons to be outraged. "Citizen Koch" presents a relentless indictment of Charles and David Koch, two conservative businessmen who funded the successful effort to persuade the Supreme Court to extend First Amendment rights to corporations -- and, as a result, open the floodgates to unlimited campaign spending on behalf of pro-business candidates. Following the all-too-common “rush to retail and patch it later” business plan that has practically defined the HD consoles this generation, Ubisoft has announced a day one patch for Assassin’s Creed III that they are describing as “highly recommended”.
The patch fixes 44 known bugs in the finished game. Many are fairly harmless glitches, however, there are several that could be game breaking. All the fixes are listed below but there are several spoilers in there, so you might want to just blind patch if you want to remain completely in the dark on the game’s story.
Granted Assassin’s Creed III‘s day one patch is not anywhere near the length of last week’s Medal of Honor: Warfighter patch, however, in these cases I always think about the millions of consoles out there that are not hooked up to the Internet and therefore can’t update broken games.

What’s the most a criminal’s ever taken from you?
Many of you just answered “none” or “not much, but that cell phone had precious memories on it.” Some thought, “my sense of security.” A few of you are still seriously considering a part-time career in vigilantism.
But most Americans, deep down, know we’ve been robbed big time.
We may not have lost Grandma’s costume jewelry from the safe, or the use of our legs in a drive-by, but we lost something near and dear to us all.
We lost the Clinton years.
Remember those? No, not the boy bands and AOL online minutes. I mean the last, great hurrah of American Empire; the epoch when we were so high on the hog, we had the liberty to bitch about the pettiest crap while rolling in the fat of the land.

Jerry Springer likened the Tea Party to dictators and Osama bin Laden in an interview with Current TV's Cenk Uygur on Friday.
"You want to have a new conspiracy?" Springer asked (video available above). "These people that want to do away with our government — how is that different that all these dictators? Osama bin Laden wanted to do away with our government. What’s wrong with us?"
The Tea Party wasn't the only target of Springer's ire. He also expressed his dismay at the "fringe elements," which he said have taken over the Republican Party. He blamed redistricting for creating a country that is too fiercely partisan.
"So, now, if you’re a Republican, you’re afraid to even have your picture taken with Obama and you can never talk with the other side," Springer said. "That is why we’ve become so polarized and why we get these loonies in office.

One of my favorite relationships in TV history was between Josh Lyman and Donatella Moss on The West Wing.
From the moment we met this Deputy Chief of Staff and his assistant, it was clear there were feelings there on both sides. But they weren't acted upon, they were scarcely even acknowledged in any overt manner, until - ummm, spoiler alert? - the end of the series.
Granted, Josh and Donna worked at the White House, a rather serious place of business. But from all we've seen on The Newsroom, the folks at Acn treat their occupations with just as much gravity as those employed at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
My point being: Aaron Sorkin knows how to write workplace non-romances, situations where lead characters beat around the flirting bush, remaining focused on their work but still finding time for knowing glances or gestures. Subtle stuff. Respectable stuff. Interesting, original stuff.

Kate Middleton joined her grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth, for a special event in London today. The ladies were among the many who turned out for a royal tea party at Buckingham Palace. 8,000 people were in attendance, as were Kate's in-laws Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. Kate was lovely, as usual, in a pink dress. It was the same Emilia Wickstead coatdress that she wore less than two weeks ago for drinks with William and Harry at Waterloo Chamber in honor of a royal dinner for heads of state. The event was held ahead of the official opening of the Queen's Jubilee, a special celebration being held to honor Elizabeth's 60 years on the throne. The tea party is actually held annually to honor those who do public service, and this year's timing couldn't have been better. The Queen's grandsons, Princes William and Harry, even gave special interviews ahead of the Jubilee's start.

Broadcast’s dog-and-pony shows in New York City are finally over, but the walk-up to the fall 2012-2013 lineup has only just begun. Before we start wringing our hands over Britney Spears’ emotional readiness to be a reality show judge, we have some knee-jerk reactions to what we saw and heard this week:
Biggest trend: Comedy explosion. There’s 29 sitcoms hitting the air this fall — and we’re not including Rock Center With Brian Williams. That’s an enormous number of couches, awkward dates and workplace misunderstandings. Tuesdays will be a three-network comedy traffic jam, while ABC and NBC will offload extra chuckles into Fridays.

It's a few years now since the whole Grindhouse debacle, but it seems that Michael Biehn is still feeling the Planet Terror vibe. He's just embarked on a partnership with his recent Divide director Xavier Gens to produce no fewer than three gnarly new grindhouse horror projects. The first will be Gens' The Farm, starring scream queen Danielle Harris. Don't expect much in the way of groovy trains or Adge Cutler-type cider consumption: this Farm is about a "veteran" (of what?) returning to his Texas home, only to find himself immediately fighting again. His new war is on three fronts: against his innner demons, the greedy corporation that wants his land, and also a "horror that threatens to devour the American heartland". The Tea Party? If only.Harris (Stakeland, Hatchet 2, various Halloweens, including Rob Zombie's) is obviously no stranger to horror, and she'll co-star with Michael Eklund and Ivan Gonzalez,...

Comedian Bobcat Goldthwait stepped out of his Police Academy shadow with his first directed film Shakes the Clown in 1991, in which he also starred as the title character. Since then, Goldthwait has put more of his focus on becoming a filmmaker, releasing absurd cult favorites like World’s Greatest Dad (starring Robin Williams), Windy City Heat, and now his raging dark comedy, God Bless America.
In his latest film, Joel Murray plays a divorced father named Frank who decides he has had enough of bratty reality TV stars, jackass political commentators, people who talk during movies, etc. With the help of a young girl named Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), Frank decides to kill some people in hopes of making our world a nicer place.
I sat down with Goldthwait to discuss God Bless America, what he thinks of MTV, and the little anti-Semites extras he worked with on set.

London, Jan 25: Mick Jagger has turned down an invitation to a UK event at the World Economic Forum in Davos, fearing that he would be used as a "political football".
The tea party, hosted by Prime Minister David Cameron at the Swiss resort, is designed to showcase British talent.
The 68-year-old rocker said he would now cut short his visit to Davos citing "inaccurate" comments on his political allegiances.
He said he had "eschewed party politics" during his career.
Others expected to attend the event include model Lily Cole and Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

With the field of candidates cut down by half from just one month ago, the Republican presidential nomination could very well hinge on the results tomorrow in the South Carolina primary.
Leading nominee Mitt Romney went into the first contest in the South with a historic double win in the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary. But on Thursday, Romney's razor-thin eight-vote victory over former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum was essentially vacated when the final tally put Santorum up by 34 votes. The reversal didn't have any real impact on Romney's status — delegates from Iowa won't be decided until a later date — but it robbed him of bragging rights.

In 2005 Christopher Nolan delivered to the world “Batman Begins,” the first film version of Batman that really dove into the psychological archetypes of the famed comic book vigilante. “If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal, you become something else entirely,” says Ras Al Ghul, the mysterious clandestine leader of the League of Shadows. Throughout the films and comics Batman’s emergence in Gotham City as always been to fight injustice, corruption and take on the criminal underworld that slayed his parents and keep the same from happening to others. It is with this emergence that brought something perhaps even Bruce Wayne never expected, the supervillain(s).”What about escalation?”says Jim Gordon to Batman at the end of the film,”we start carrying semi automatics, they buy automatics, we start wearing Kevlar, they buy armor piercing rounds, and *you’re* wearing...

Bluffton, S.C. -- The tea party activists that packed the room picked up the refrain of a song as they waited for Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann to arrive.
"While we need a new beginning, no Republicans or Democrats. Yes, clean out all the vermin and then kick out all the rats," Don Fortney, who wrote the song, vocalized as he played the guitar.
As Bachmann entered the Golden Corral restaurant, a crowd belted out the chorus: "Can you hear us now?"
"Blowin' in the Wind," it's not, and Don Fortney isn't the platinum-selling troubadour of a new generation. But the tea party, like its left-wing progenitor, has spawned a new genre of protest music that's becoming the soundtrack for the political movement's gatherings.
About half of self-described tea party supporters are 50 or older and can remember listening to Am radio that spun 45s of liberal protest music like Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger.

The Tea Party and the Wall Street demonstrators share the same conviction: They are the victims of theft by powerful institutions. The Tea Party blames government taxation. The demonstrators blame corruption in the financial industry.
The concern about taxation is perplexing, since U.S. tax rates are at a historic low. Indeed, there seems little chance that we can ever begin to pay off the American deficit without raising taxes. Many millionaires, led by Warren Buffet, have volunteered to pay higher taxes. A belief persists, however, that the middle class bears an unfair tax burden. In repeating this charge the other day, Mitt Romney included himself in the middle class.
Financial corruption is widely manifest. It was greed on Wall Street that apparently led to the current economic downturn. A bailout of failed institutions led to them repeating some of the same greedy practices. Some financial executives have been sentenced...

The Oscar-winning actor said that Obama’s election has made race relations in this country worse, because the Tea Party movement is “a racist thing.” “Their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term,” the actor said. “What’s, what does that, what underlines that?...

If the Republican presidential campaign were Survivor, last night’s debate in Florida was the episode where the most savvy competitors form an alliance against the energetic rival who keeps on winning Immunity. Frontrunner Rick Perry weathered a barrage of criticism from all sides, as Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum attacked him relentlessly for his policies as Texas governor. Romney and Perry took turns citing passages of each others’ books as evidence of flip-flopping, and Santorum hit Perry from the far right on Texas’ “soft” policy on illegal immigration. (Because when it comes to leadership on illegal immigration,...

Canada is such an innocent land. It's a country where The Tea Party is better known as a Middle Eastern-inspired rock band (aww, how quaint) and they're tired of being confused for an American political movement — one that'd probably consider their music to be terrorist propaganda. The band is so sick of it that they're considering selling their name and website domain, teaparty.com, which could easily fetch over a million dollars. Selling out never seemed so profitable. Of course, there are extreme political factors to consider. The band would prefer selling out for less to The Daily Show or Colbert, because the comedic possibilities could brilliantly counter whatever it is Michele Bachmann believes. But no matter how much it ultimately goes for, the domain name probably won't bring in as as much as sex.com (13 million) or even vodka.com (3 million), because booze [...]...

In the age of American Idol, My Super Sweet Sixteen and the Jersey Shore, Natural Born Killers, Oliver Stone’s 1994 film looks quaint. Fred (Joel Murray), the anti-hero of God Bless America lies awake nights watching TV, including a sweet sixteen show featuring a privileged white girl upset her present was a Lexus. To quote Bill Maher, if “a 5-star hotel isn’t good enough, its time to bring back the guillotine.” I have faith not all of America is like the Jersey Shore, a self-obsessed self-contained group, but we do (at least during Midnight Madness at Tiff) cheer on Fred as his violent fantasies lead to a killing spree against “mean people.”.This is perhaps the Coffee Party approach, which seem to stand for nothing other than civility. The Tea Party however stand for all sorts things I can’t understand – true to their principals they should go tell...

"A smart, confident kick start to what looks like being a notably strong Venice film festival, The Ides of March showcases George Clooney, its director, co/writer and joint lead actor, back in the politically committed mood that spawned Syriana and Good Night, and Good Luck." The Telegraph's David Gritten: "A political thriller exploring themes of loyalty, ambition and the gap between public ideals and private fallibility, it engages the brain within the context of a solid entertainment." 4 out of 5 stars.

The Tea Party, the fiscally conservative movement that turned the House of Representatives over to the Republicans last November, has found itself in the eye of the debt crisis storm this week as Tea Party-backed legislators almost sank the House Speaker's own bill. On last night's O'Reilly Factor, Tea Party leader David Webb told host Laura Ingraham he was outraged his group was being labeled childish, as, in the debate, "we're the adults in the room" who Americans listen to.

Some pundits have made clear that the Tea Party is to blame for the possibly impeding default (if they even exist at all.) So who does the conservative opiniotainment program Fox and Friends turn to for clarity on this topic? None other than Tea Party poster candidate Christine O'Donnell!

All I know is just what I read in the papers. -- Will Rogers
Me too. Or hear on TV, or see on the net. That's all most of us knows. I'm sure the President and Senators and government officials know more, but we elect them, they don't elect us. And I'm sure the CEOs of powerful corporations know more, although the Murdoch testimony indicates he didn't know as much as he could have read in the papers.
What I read, and hear is that the Republican Party is abandoning its hopes of speaking for a majority of Americans. It will still win elections. It controls the House. Perhaps it will elect the next President. But steadily and fatally it is moving out of history.

The Tea Party has become one of the driving forces in American politics today by mostly keeping it simple-- no central leadership, no rigid principles outside from a demand for less government intervention and lower spending. Not all believe this message, however. Take Rachel Maddow, who acknowledged on her program today that not being socially conservative is integral to the Tea Party's identity, but then wondered why the "Tea Party tidal wave" that came to power in November has resulted in a surge of anti-abortion legislation.

Open-minded political figure Michele Bachmann, she of gay people being “part of Satan” and Medicaid being a form of socialism (despite her husband’s acceptance of $137,000 of it!) fame, is ruffling the feathers of yet another musician. This time around, it’s Tom Petty, whose management sent Bachmann’s campaign a cease-and-desist letter to halt their use of his song, “American Girl.”
This is the second time in two weeks that Bachmann’s camp has been asked to not use a song on the campaign trail. The Tea Party movement has been, practically since its inception, a multi-platform venture. Recently, for instance, the movement created its own magazine, the Tea Party Review, which promises to reflect “the diversity of the movement." Now, the Tea Party has added a production company to its many offerings. Colony Bay's first project is a historical drama, Courage, New Hampshire, which will premier this Sunday at a movie theater in Monrovia, California with the help of red carpet hosts Victoria Jackson, the former SNL cast member who recently embarked on a one-woman mission to alert the world to the horror that is Glee, and All Patriots Media Network radio host Tony Katz. The program will be available on DVD at a later date.

The Tea Party movement has their own news network, and now, they're turning to admitted fiction.
Having long accused Hollywood of raging liberalism, a group of conservatives have banded together to start Colony Bay Productions, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a startup production company that will create right wing-tinged content. Founded by Jonathan Wilson, an experienced Hollywood development executive, and James Patrick Riley, an experienced Patrick Henry impersonator, the company will debut its first show, "Courage, New Hampshire," on Saturday night.
With their interpretation of the founding fathers' intentions, and idealized belief in the purity of early American life, "Courage, New Hampshire" is an obvious start for the Tea Party company; set in the 1700s, it's a soap opera-style show that will go straight to DVD after its red carpet debut. They didn't pitch it to mainstream networks that are actually on TV.

Shatner has had a storied music career, producing confusing, parodied yet somehow enlightening song covers and original bits over the past 40+ years. The deal brokered by Barack Obama and John Boehner helps the president regain his rep as a strong leader, and allows Boehner to tell his base that they've succeeded in shifting the agenda. It's a win for both men, Peter Beinart writes.
During the cold war, conspiracy theorists would sometimes suggest that the American and Soviet militaries were secretly in cahoots. Each needed its civilian overlords to keep the money flowing, and to make that happen, each needed the other to appear menacing. "Hey Vasily, we've got a difficult budget vote coming up. Would you mind sending a sub into the Persian Gulf?" "No worries, Rick, and we're super-pumped about your big war game next spring." Or something like that.
