Tony Award-winning director Michael Grandage will produce and direct Jack and Lem, a feature film chronicling the thirty-year friendship between John F. Kennedy and Kirk Lemoyne “Lem” Billings. Screenwriter David Scearce (A Single Man) will adapt David Pitts’ book Jack and Lem: The Untold Story of an Extraordinary Friendship.
Grandage, director of current Broadway hit Frozen and winner of the 2010 Tony for his direction of John Logan’s Red, will produce Jack and Lem under his production company Michael Grandage Company, alongside producers Andrew Zoppa and Alex Zoppa.
“The moment I read about Jack and Lem I knew it was a story I wanted to tell,” said Grandage, whose current West End re-staging of Red, starring Alfred Molina and Alfred Enoch, will be filmed by Trafalgar Releasing for screenings across the UK and North America in November.
Continued the director, “It’s a side of an endlessly fascinating President the world has yet to see.

With apologies to Tolstoy: Each unhappy family may be unhappy in its own way, but miserable adolescents do tend to get repetitious. “Measure of a Man” is the latest among too many of what one might term “My Crappy but Formative Teenage Summer Vacation” movies. Worse, it’s a particularly generic one that brings no distinctive personality or plot angles to a very familiar set of misfit-hero woes and eventual, underwhelming triumphs. A first U.S. project for director Jim Loach, the primarily TV-trained son of Brit auteur Ken, this bland flashback lacks the cultural familiarity that boosted his Nottingham-set prior feature “Oranges and Sunshine.”
His voiceover narration just as pedestrian as everything else here, Bobby Marks (Blake Cooper from “The Maze Runner”) recounts how he dreaded his New York family’s summer forays to a lakeside cabin in small-town Rhode Island, where all the available outdoor activities seemed designed to humiliate his athletically challenged,...

The coming of age dramedy is a crowded genre with many seminal works established in the 70s and 80s. It’s tough to therefore see any entries without comparing them to what came first. Some can still find their niche and win audiences over before earning a place besides those former greats, but oftentimes they simply feel too familiar to necessitate a second look. The latter category is a shame because familiarity isn’t always synonymous with “bad.” Take Jim Loach’s Measure of a Man, for instance. Here’s a serviceable film adapted by David Scearce from sports writer Robert Lipsyte’s 1977 semi-autobiographical novel One Fat Summer that possesses many redeemable qualities including a worthwhile, body-positive message. It may objectively succeed in its narrative goal, but subjectively never sets itself apart.

From a Luc Besson action flick getting a veteran to Armie Hammer getting swapped for a hot rising actor, a few casting bits and bobs to keep you ahead of the game.... First up, Morgan Freeman has joined Luc Besson's upcoming actioner "Lucy." Scarlett Johansson leads the movie playing a woman who is forced to become a drug mule but finds the substances have entered her body instead turning her into some kind of ass-kicking badass. Uh, okay. Scratch that -- she basically becomes all the X-Men combined as "her new abilities allow her to see into the future, move objects with her mind and disregard pain and other emotions." Lord. Freeman will play a science dude who can explain all this, who Lucy attempts to find before she dies or something. This sounds pretty dumb. Christina Hendricks has entered final negotiations for Measure of a Man.
The Mad Men star will appear alongside Riley Griffiths in director Terry Loane's drama, reports Deadline.

Set in the 1970s, Measure of a Man centres around a bullied teenager (Griffiths) who takes a summer job from his reclusive Wall Street mentor.
Hendricks will play the boy's mother, whose independence and new career path has been causing friction in her marriage.
Hendricks recently starred in indie comedy Struck by Lightning and will shortly reunite with Drive co-star Ryan Gosling for his directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster.

Chicago – I wonder if more people had seen Colin Firth’s incredible performance in “A Single Man” if he wouldn’t have been considered more of a frontrunner at last year’s Academy Awards. Easily one of the best male performances of last year (along with Jeremy Renner in “The Hurt Locker” and Jeff Bridges in “Crazy Heart), Firth’s work here is revelatory, displaying depth heretofore only hinted at by this already underrated actor.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, as is often the case with imported foreign works, is best understood through the lens of its original title: Män som hatar kvinnor, or "Men who hate women." Based on the first novel in Stieg Larsson's Millenium trilogy, the Swedish film is an engrossing look at the allure of obsession, but it's also a brutal, uncompromising experience meant to vividly explore the depths to which some men go to own and ultimately destroy women. There are scenes of sexual violence as uncomfortable as anything you will see in mainstream cinema, and I would be lying to say that I did anything other than suffer through them. But there's a point to such suffering, even at a fictional remove, and director Niels Arden Oplev knows it. Those dark moments aren't designed to engender pity for the women in question,...

They all say this show changed a little bit, but we guess it was expected for the 25th annual ceremony from Stapless Center, or if you prefer – the Spirit Awards.
Last week we were all occupied with Oscar, but it’s always the right time to take a look at (maybe) less popular ceremony, but still – the good one! We’re going to remind you of this ceremony highlights.
The Spirits, run by the nonprofit Film Independent, threw in some of its typically enjoyable ironic touches.
One of them was definitely David Spade who presented the best foreign award, starting with:
“You may not know this, but my movies play in other countries. They’re huge in Poland. I can’t set foot in Bulgaria.” Thanks for letting us know Spade!

"Precious" dominated the 25th Spirit Awards March 5 with wins for best feature, best director (Lee Daniels), best first screenplay (Geoffrey Fletcher), best female lead (Gabourey Sidibe), and best supporting female (Mo'Nique). It's a poetic turn for the film, which focuses on the kind of girl that no one looks at twice, to have such an overwhelming acknowledgment from the independent film community. Likewise, in the pressroom, Sidibe joked that her upcoming plans included "world domination." This might have had something to do with her co-star Mariah Carey whispering that very phrase in her ear. "Mariah gives me all my bad ideas," said Sidibe, laughing. "[The film's success] really is a testament to the genius of Mr. Daniels. He has the power to transform people with completely different personalities into something 180 degrees different."Daniels expressed excitement for the upcoming Oscars, which took place two days later. "I am over the moon. Whether or not we win the Oscar,...

Film Independent's Spirit Awards marked their 25th anniversary this year and shook things up by trading their afternoon beachside luncheon for a nighttime party downtown. The show was hosted by comedian Eddie Izzard and a handful of the actors who attended and presented were Jeremy Renner ("The Hurt Locker"), Maggie Gyllenhaal ("Crazy Heart"), Carey Mulligan ("An Education") and Vera Farmiga ("Up in the Air"). Best Actor winner Jeff Bridges performed a song from his film "Crazy Heart" with Oscar-nominated songwriters T Bone Burnett and Ryan Bingham. The rock band Anvil whose career was chronicled in the independent film "Anvil: The Story of Anvil" also performed live and took home Best Documentary.

Colin Firth is mesmerising as a bereaved gay man with a death wish in fashion designer Tom Ford's superb debut
Christopher Isherwood was one of the great prose writers of the 20th century, a man of complexity, honesty and wit, and the fashion designer Tom Ford, making his carefully stylised directorial debut, has done an altogether admirable job of bringing to the screen what many regard as his best novel.
Born in 1904, Isherwood grew up with the cinema, was fascinated by the relationship between literature and the new medium, and his most famous line occurs his most celebrated book, Goodbye to Berlin: "I am a camera with its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking." Tom Ford’s A Single Man was a giant risk for most those involved. It was a risk for Ford, a beginner film maker and script adapter. A risk taking a staple of homosexual fiction and turning in to something possibly trite and decidedly unworthy. A risk for Colin Firth who may have alienated his rom-com following, or presenting as unable to carry a serious role. Okay, so it wasn’t a risk for Julianne Moore who has no dignity any more (remember Savage Grace?). However, those that ventured the most, certainly gained the most. A Single Man is that quiet, understated film that you wait for, every year, during the awards season.

Tom Ford's directorial debut, A Single Man, opens in Austin on Friday. Ford and David Scearce adapted the script from a novel by Christopher Isherwood, whose "Berlin Stories" were the basis for Cabaret. At times I wondered if I was watching Sally Bowles and her young British friend (the name changes depending on the version) if they had travelled back to London together at the end.
A Single Man is structured on a day in the life of George (Colin Firth), a British professor living and working in 1962 Los Angeles. As he proceeds through his day, he flashes back to memories of Jim (Matthew Goode), his longtime lover, who died suddenly in a car crash. It becomes evident that George is feeling too crushed by his loss of Jim to want to live any longer, and intends to take his own life -- this will be his last day. His...

Below you will find exactly what my votes were for the 15th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards on VH1 this Friday night. I’m a member of the Bfca, and therefore an actual, honest to god, voting member for the awards. I have 1/235th of a voice in exactly what wins. This is simply over-analyzing (a rant) the numbers of how I exactly voted. Again, this is how I voted, not the final results of the show, which won’t be known until Friday.

This Friday, the stars will gather to celebrate the best of last year at the 15th Annual Critics' Choice Awards. The MTV blog properties will be covering it, starting with a red carpet live blog from 8:30pm to 9pm Est over on Hollywood Crush. I'll be following that immediately afterwards with live blog coverage of the show here on MTV Movies Blog. We'll even have a fancy embedded player, streaming a feed directly from the show's backstage festivities onto your computer screen. It's going to be magical.
Then, on Sunday, we'll be back with more awards show coverage when the Golden Globe Awards airs. Look for a lengthier red carpet live blog, between 7pm and 9pm Est, on Hollywood Crush. Then, just like Friday, you'll want to head over to MTV Movies Blog for ongoing live blog coverage of the show as it happens. For a list of Golden Globes nominees,...

The Oscars are a secret. You never see the ballot of Meryl Streep, George Clooney or James Cameron come awards time. I’m not a fan of that. I know they don’t want to admit they have favorites, but I do. I vote for the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards as a member of the Bfca (Broadcast Film Critics Association). My ballot is below, and I think all critics should show what they consider the best, whether they vote in the Ofcs (Online Film Critics Society) or Cfca (Chicago Film Critics Society). The 15th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards airs on VH1 on Friday night.

Some critics may have taken potshots at James Cameron's screenplay for "Avatar," but it has earned a nomination from the Writers Guild of America, which announced nominations for the 2010 WGA Awards on Monday.
Cameron -- who was also nominated by the WGA for "Titanic," though that movie failed to earn a best screenplay Oscar nomination -- will compete for the honor with Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber, nominated for their fractured romance "(500) Days of Summer"; Jon Lucas & Scott Moore for breakout summer comedy "The Hangover"; Mark Boal for his Iraq War study, "The Hurt Locker"; and Joel Coen & Ethan Coen for their modern-day retelling of the story of Job, "A Serious Man."
In the adapted screenplay category, the nominees are "Crazy Heart," screenplay by Scott Cooper, based on the novel by Thomas Cobb; "Julie & Julia," which Nora Ephron adapted from two books, "Julie & Julia" by Julie Powell and "My Life in France,...

I am shocked to report that my new membership did not singlehandedly or significantly increase their taste levels, he said sarcastically. A few of the following nominations are hard to justify qualitatively speaking but you can't always get what you want. Again Oscar punditry combined with 'I just unwrapped this gift' excitement seem to have replaced careful consideration of what the year had to offer. But then it does appear as if only about 15 movies truly existed this year. In fact six movies Inglourious Basterds, Nine, Avatar, Up in the Air, The Hurt Locker, Precious and The Lovely Bones account for 48% of all the nominations. Crazy.
Am I just grumpy because they think The Lovely Bones (6 nominations) is better looking and The Blind Side (2 nominations) better acted than the exquisite Bright Star (1 nomination only)? I find those two judgment calls totally unsupportable. The abundant nominations for the garish and messy...

The World War II tale "Inglourious Basterds" and the Rome-set musical "Nine," both releases from the Weinstein Co., led the list of nominees for the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.'s 15th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards, announced early Monday, with ten nominations each.
The 3-D sci-fi film "Avatar" followed close behind with nine noms, while "The Hurt Locker" and "Up in the Air" received eight nominations each.
The awards, which will be handed out on Jan. 15 at ceremonies broadcast from the Hollywood Palladium by Vh-1, expanded this year from 17 to 25 categories, adding seven technical categories and separating its screenplay category into original and adapted slots.

After watching the first five minutes of director Tom Ford's debut film A Single Man (2009), I started to fear the worst. Between the slow motion-accentuated, visually abstracted images of a nude male body submerged in an endless body of water, punctuated by the yearning sounds of a violin, I leaned over to my wife and whispered "Oh no. This could be a feature length version of an Obsession commercial." Ford's background as the former creative director for Gucci and a prominent fashion designer left me ambivalent as to his ability to construct a meaningful film. An hour and half later, my fears were utterly annihilated and I was struck by the sentiment that A Single Man is not only one of the most aesthetically accomplished films of the year but a film that also finds balance beyond form in the drama of the script (adapted from Christopher Isherwood's novel...

"Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" has come out as one of the nominations leaders at 2010 Independent Spirit Awards. The drama film, which sees Mariah Carey as a social worker, was on Tuesday, December 1 announced to be collecting five nods from the awards honoring independent filmmakers, and thus shared similar number with another drama "The Last Station".
The movie about an abused teen mother nabbed nominations for Best Feature, Best Director, Best Female Lead, Best First Screenplay and Best Supporting Female. It will battle against "Last Station" in the first three categories. For the Best Feature title, it is also up against "500 Days of Summer" "Amreeka" and "Sin Nombre".
"Precious" fails to bring recognition to Carey, but it does land two of its other major cast Gabourey Sidibe and Mo'Nique. Sidibe is listed against Maria Bello, Nisreen Faour, Gwyneth Paltrow and Helen Mirren for Best Female Lead, while...

Although the nominees for the Academy Awards won't be announced until sometime next year, a few of the other award ceremonies are already in full swing including the Independent Spirit Awards, which recognize the best films shot for $20 million or less. This year's Spirit Award nominees were announced earlier today, and I think there are definitely some interesting choices. First off, the big one that everyone is picking up on is the fact that Paranormal Activity was nominated for Best First Feature. And why shouldn't it be? The Blair Witch Project won the exact same award back in 2000. Anvil! The Story of Anvil has been redeemed somewhat for the Oscar snub by getting a nod here for Best Documentary, and surprisingly, Jemaine Clement picked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Gentlemen Broncos. Other than that, some of the movies that scored multiple nominations include Precious, (500) Days of Summer,...

The 2009 Independent Spirit Nominations were handed out today, and we're duty bound to report them so that you can visualize all the great movies that aren't playing at your local multiplex in Sheboygan. Actually, I don't know what is says about the industry, but some of the choices seem somewhat obscure by even my own indie-friendly tastes. There were a few really great indies this year, but there wasn't a lot of depth, which means it's roughly the same five films nominated for everything, and only three of them got any sort of real exposure outside of NY/La. But then again, that's what awards like these are for: To highlight films that we're missing. I have some favorites, but I'll keep my mouth shut and just present the nominees. My guess is that, besides Precious, a screenplay nod for (500) Days and an acting nod for Jeff Bridges, you won't...
