The last cork has been popped and the final flute of Kirkland Signatures sparkling wine drained down to the last drop. Old Man 2023 has gathered his sash about his withered frame and slunk into the night, clearing the way for cherubic New Year 2024–giggly, chubby and brimming with promise.
Or something. In reality, years don’t flip on and off like a light switch. They smear into each other like paint, until everything is the same weird shade of brownish-purple. But still: we all strive to make each new chapter in the Gregorian filing system a fresh start–a chance to break bad habits and begin good ones.
The traditional way of kickstarting these self-improvement reboots is through the maddeningly self-deceptive ritual of setting New Year’s Resolutions–80% of which are inevitably abandoned by February 1, according to most studies. But hey! A sustainable 20% is still pretty good. And for cineastes,...

MTV has cast someone very familiar to its (current) core audience in a key Scream role: Rapper Tyga will join the horror series for its revamped third season, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Tyga will play Jamal, the loyal yet rough around the edges stepbrother of new character Deion. As previously reported, Deion is a Michael B. Jordan-esque football player who’s heading for a college scholarship when a masked killer starts messing with him.

In amongst all of the big summer blockbusters being released in the next few weeks (Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, Baywatch, Wonder Woman, The Mummy), there are a few hidden gems that deserve your attention outside of the whizz-bang of the summer season and one such film is Kicks.
Co-written and directed by Justin Tipping, Kicks tells the story of Brandon (Jahking Guillory), a teenager who dreams of owning a new pair of Air Jordans trainers. However, whilst walking through a rough neighbourhood, he is mugged for his trainers leading to him and his two friends (Christopher Jordan Wallace and Christopher Meyer) on a dangerous mission through the streets of Oakland to reclaim them.
The genesis of the idea came from a very sad but powerful moment in Tipping’s own adolescence when he was mugged. but Tipping says it’s an event he wanted...

Notorious B.I.G would have been 45 years old...today. To celebrate his friend's 45th birthday and his life, Sean Diddy Combs paid a touching tribute to his slain pal, who was murdered in 1997. During the tribute, the music man brought out Biggie's son, Christopher Jordan Wallace, out on stage in a rare public appearance at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas. "Right now, I would like to bring a very special guest to the stage. He's a new groundbreaking actor. Brand-new recording artist. That's going to change the game. Please welcome biggie's son, C.J. Wallace." The 20-year-old, who was born just months before his father was gunned down, briefly spoke about his iconic...

The “Jumpman” might not mean much to you if you aren’t a fan of Michael Jordan. The greatest to ever do it on a basketball court, G.O.A.T. for short. He played for the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, picking up six NBA championship rings, and has a phone book-like list of other sporting achievements, including two olympic gold medals. But perhaps, maybe his most iconic sporting moment came when he laced up in the early eighties in a pair of Nike basketball shoes; created especially for him, branded with his surname in a red and black colourway: The Air Jordan 1. They heralded in the era of the sneakerhead, which still continues to this day, spanning generations young and old.

The Tribeca Film Festival Official selection Kicks, which stars Moonlight’s very own Mahershala Ali, has a trailer ahead of its digital-only release on May 22, it’s unique that’s for sure.

The film industry is still a long way from racial equity, but the last few years have seen strides to bring the young black experience to the screen in films like Dope, Dear White People and Morris From America. All of those films were important in distilling a specific existence, but they all offered black characters who self-identified as outcasts.
Justin Tipping’s debut, Kicks, follows another societal reject, Brandon, a socially awkward black 15-year old living in Richmond, California, but while Brandon feels uncomfortable in his own skin, the script doesn’t demonize the culture he’s come from. Brandon has grown up in a place that idolizes a legacy of gangsters, but there’s just as much an understanding that expressing masculinity is about actively posturing.

One of the themes explored in “Kicks” is the lethality of material possessions, and for stars Christopher Jordan Wallace, Christopher Meyer and Jahking Guillory, the movie hits a little too close to home. “This is happening every day, people are getting beat up, killed over materialistic things,” Guillory said in a recent interview with TheWrap. “My friend got stabbed 17 times over his backpack. Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Labor Day weekend wasn’t good for the two new wide releases at all, although the romantic drama The Light Between Oceans (DreamWorks), starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, ended up doing far better of the two. Also as expected, Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems) won the weekend with a four-day total of $19.7 million, a little less than I predicted. The Light Between Oceans ended up with slightly over $6 million, roughly the same as my original prediction but 20th Century Fox’s thriller Morgan, starring Kate Mara, bomb-bomb-bombed with a ridiculously bad four-day opening of just $2.5 million in its first four days. The Mexican comedy No Manches Frida (Lionsgate/Pantelion) ended up faring better in just 362 theaters,...

They aren't just shoes. Focus Features has debuted a trailer for a film called Kicks, from director Justin Tipping about a teen from the Bay Area whose favorite pair of shoes get stolen and he decides to embark on a mission to retrieve them. Newcomer Jahking Guillory stars as Brandon, the teen who leads the mission, with a cast including Christopher Jordan Wallace, Christopher Meyer, Kofi Siriboe, Mahershala Ali and Molly Shaiken. The film originally premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this year, where it won Best Cinematography - you can see why from this footage. This looks pretty damn good, I'm surprised I haven't heard more about it until now, but thanks to a great trailer it's now on my radar. Check it out below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Justin Tipping's Kicks, found on YouTube (via Tmb): When his hard-earned kicks get snatched by a local hood,...

How far would you go to retrieve a pair of shoes? For the lead of Kicks, it’s his mission — and it’s a dangerous one. The directorial debut of Justin Tipping, which earned the Best Cinematography award at Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, will arrive in theaters early this fall, and today the first impressive trailer has landed, featuring impeccably-crafted shots and even an astronaut.
“In terms of deciding what story to tell, The Bicycle Thief got me thinking how much this one object can mean to someone, how it can have all this emotional weight,” Tipping tells Filmmaker Magazine. “When developing the idea of Kicks, I was definitely referencing that. It kind of gave an emotional structure to it. Then I was also watching Fellini films and the dream sequences in 8 1/2, which I referenced with the astronaut sequences in Kicks.”

Learning to become a man from the shoes up, Brandon (Jahking Guillory) is taught the value of his new Jordans through a chaotic and lively couple of days spent on the streets of Oakland. The debut feature film from director Justin Tipping, Kicks tells a familiar story but accomplishes its goals with gorgeous flashes of joy-inducing cinematic flair. It’s an uneven, yet often absorbing coming-of-age adventure in the hood, and one that I greatly enjoyed.
15 years old and still waiting on an adolescent growth spurt, Brandon walks with his head down, hiding from violent gangbangers behind his long, curly locks. His best friends Albert (Christopher Jordan Wallace) and Rico (Christopher Meyer) make fun of his girly hair whenever they’re not flirting with high school girls. Meanwhile, Brandon keeps his focus on the shoes everyone wears.

Long after the dust settles on his career, Will Ferrell will probably be best remembered as the star of Anchorman, or for his perpetual manchild routines in Talladega Nights or Step Brothers or Old School, and his more serious roles like the excellent, underrated Stranger Than Fiction will no doubt take a back seat.
Everything Must Go is a melancholic, bittersweet portrait of man who has lost everything: a relapsed alcoholic, he loses his job at the outset, and subsequently discovers that his wife has left him over his drinking and an implied incident of adultery at a work convention – he is a man cut out of life, in the process of being erased, and unable to fight for his own survival.
Nick isn’t necessarily an innocent victim – the film in fact takes great effort to say that he is at fault for almost everything that goes wrong for...

Will Ferrell plays it straight as a bitter alcoholic in Dan Rush's finely observed adaptation of a Raymond Carver short story
The novel long preceded the short story, and in his celebrated history of the short story Walter Allen calls Walter Scott's "The Two Drovers", written in the early 19th century, the first fully achieved example of the genre. It is a more difficult form to master, as well as being generally less lucrative; journalists who've made a name writing for newspapers seek publishers' contracts to write novels rather than try their hands at short stories.
Paradoxically, perhaps, short stories are better suited to the cinema than novels are, whether they conclude with O Henry-style twists in the tail or Chekhovian epiphanies to be absorbed. John Huston, who took on both The Bible and Moby-Dick in his prime, had his two greatest late successes with film versions of classic stories,...

Sleeping Beauty (18)
(Julia Leigh, 2011, Aus) Emily Browning, Rachael Blake, Ewen Leslie, Peter Carroll. 101 mins
The outer limits of the service industry are explored in this strange anti-fairytale, as a student submits her unconscious body to the desires of sagging, wealthy old men. There's no prospect of a prince coming in any sense. Bravely elusive and surreally detached in the manner of Kubrick or Buñuel, it's occasionally spellbinding.
Real Steel (12A)
(Shawn Levy, 2011, Us) Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goyo. 128 mins
Can Jackman train a robot to fight while reconnecting with his estranged son and his old flame? Or will this family-friendly amalgam of Rocky and Transformers subvert the formula of every fight movie ever?
The Three Musketeers (12A)
(Paul Ws Anderson, 2011, Ger/Fra/UK/Us) Logan Lerman, Matthew Macfadyen, Milla Jovovich. 110 mins
The Resident Evil director delivers action spectacle by any means necessary. Forget 17th-century history; bring on the aerial warships!

Will Ferrell is hardly the first actor who springs to mind as ideal casting for the role of an unemployed, beer-sozzled suburbanite whose life is in freefall, yet watching him in that very role here, an adaptation (or rather an “adding on”) of a short story from famed Us writer Raymond Carver, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else bringing as much conviction and such an understated beauty to the part.

Everything Must Go
(released September 6th, 2011)
Review:
The film Everything Must Go is one of my favorite type of films. It is is a film that equally embraces its comedic aspects, while at the same time, is very dramatic as well. When this is done as perfectly as it is in this film, it makes the movie come to life and feel so much more real.
The story follows Nick Halsey (Will Ferrell) on the worst day of his life. He has just lost his job & returns home to find all of his belongings on the front lawn and a note from his wife saying she has left him. It is revealed shortly thereafter that Nick is an alcoholic and has recently relapsed. Nick decides that ultimately he will sell all of his belongings and start fresh. The fourth step in Alcoholics Anonymous' well-known twelve-fold path to reform is about taking a "fearless moral inventory" of one's actions, specifically in the ways alcohol abuse has fueled those actions for the worse. It is, like all the steps, rooted in a commitment to honesty the level of which would make most people break down, which is the entire point: only by being honest about your problems can you work on fixing them. This is the lesson that came back to me time and again watching Everything Must Go, a resolutely safe drama about alcoholism that for the most part lacks the punch of even after-school specials and seems genuinely afraid of making the moral inventory that's required of the level of filmmaking to which first-time writer-director Dan Rush aspires. The story revolves around an alcoholic who loses his job and his wife and who subsequently struggles to get his life back on track.

Movieline has interviewed Christopher Jordan Wallace, the 14-year-old son of infamous rapper Notorious B.I.G. a.k.a Biggie Smalls about his latest film, “Everything Must Go” as well as playing his father in the biopic “Notorious”. When asked about why he decided to play his father, Wallace said, “I didn’t decide to do it–my grandma, she told me, ‘You should try to see if you can play your dad in the movie.’ And at first I kind of thought, well, that would be real typical, for Biggie’s son to play Biggie as a kid. But I kind of got into it a bit. I didn’t want to pass it up.” Even though...

Everything Must Go Directed by: Dan Rush Written by: Dan Rush, Raymond Carver (short story) Starring: Will Ferrell, Rebecca Hall and Christopher Jordan Wallace Nick Halsey (Will Ferrell) is having a very bad day. He gets canned from his job, then arrives home to find that his wife has left him, changed the locks, and placed every single item he owns on the front lawn. His credit cards and phone have been cut off, as well. That's all it takes for this recovering alcoholic to lose his tremulous grasp on sobriety, and just like that, he retreats back into the comfort of the bottle. A rational person would start taking steps to move their belongings, but Nick settles into his easy chair with a twelve pack and there he stays for the next several days, squatting on his own front lawn. Naturally this doesn't sit well with the neighbors, and...

Will Farrell makes many comedic films that can sometimes seem a little unnecessarily silly. Everything Must Go delivers a great serious story with just the right amount of comedy to keep the audience interested and on their toes.
Farrell's chemistry with 14-year-old newcomer Christopher Jordan Wallace (Biggie's son) is extremely entertaining and they banter back and forth very well.
Farrel plays Nick Halsey, a alcoholic who relapses when he hits rock bottom one day when he is fired, his wife leaves him and changes the locks, throwing all his stuff out on the front lawn.
Directed by Dan Rush, Nick doesn't have anywhere to go but up, yet he can't seem to get himself sober and out of his armchair long enough to do anything about his deteriorating life.
Nick finds his way again through mentoring a promising young protege Kenny and eventually putting all his stuff up for sale.

Chicago – Alcohol mixed with the American Dream sometimes becomes a destructive chemistry. With every individual’s reaction to ethyl alcohol like a fingerprint, the general image of the party animal can easily morph into what John Cheever called ‘The Sorrows of Gin.” These sorrows are explored through Will Ferrell in “Everything Must Go.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Ferrell puts on his every man suit as he dies as a salesman. His performance is stoic, almost ironic, and the rest of his character’s world catches up to it in various reactive ways. The wonder of the film is that it has a marquee star demonstrating the wages of excessive sin, a subject that is not usually explored in the context of the half-million-per-home suburban streets.
Nick (Will Ferrell) is fired from his lucrative sales job because he has fallen off the wagon and embarrassed himself at a company celebration. He reacts to this...

Everything Must Go
Directed by: Dan Rush
Cast: Will Ferrell, Rebecca Hall, Christopher Jordan Wallace
Running Time: 1 hr 36 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: May 13, 2011 (limited)
Plot: Nick Halsey (Ferrell) relapses with his alcoholism, causing him to lose his wife and his job. He lives on his front lawn and attempts to start over. Based on a short story by Raymond Carver.
Who’S It For? If you are desperate to see a serious/sad side of Ferrell.
Overall
It’s not a comedy. I repeat. It’s not a comedy. The reason I just state this is because Ferrell has not made the Tom Hanks leap. He hasn’t left the funny/wacky man behind. Here’s how you know; When you picture Hank’s face, nothing happens. When you see Ferrell’s, you start to chuckle.
Now that we have that clarified, this is the story of Nick and...

Will Ferrell & Dan Rush Talk Expanding A 4-Page Short Story For The Indie Drama 'Everything Must Go'
Filmmakers Didn't Want The Relationship With Rebecca Hall Go Hollywood & 12 Other Things We Learned First-time feature-length director Dan Rush (known for his commercial work) must have naked pictures of some studio execs' off-hours, off-marriage tryst. Either that or his screenplay for "Everything Must Go," an adaptation of a four-page Raymond Carver story must have ruled. Considering the subtle, mannered, funny, yet not-broad dramedy that stars the very excellent cast of Will Ferrell, Rebecca Hall, Laura Dern, Michael Peña, Stephen Root and newcomer Christopher Jordan Wallace, we're thinking the latter. A small and minimalist, but not slight, story, the…...

There is a scene in every Will Ferrell movie where Ferrell's character hits rock bottom and all the puffed-up narcissism gets stripped away to reveal the pathetic loser underneath. Ron Burgundy gets fired, grows a beard, and drinks milk in the hot San Diego sun. Ricky Bobby loses his wife to his best friend, becomes terrified of his race car, and watches a French driver replace him as Nascar's hottest star. Brennan Huff is forced to get a job, wear a tie, and plan the largest helicopter leasing event in the Western hemisphere. Ferrell's new movie, "Everything Must Go," is that scene stretched out to feature length. In one terrible day, Ferrell's Nick Halsey gets fired from his job, left by his wife, and locked out of his house. With no money -- his wife has cancelled his credit cards and frozen their joint bank account -- and nowhere to go,...

Title: Everything Must Go Director: Dan Rush Starring: Will Ferrell, Rebecca Hall, Christopher Jordan Wallace, Michael Pena, Stephen Root “Everything Must Go” survives on intrigue. And this statement isn’t just reserved for the story. The said intrigue, becomes more vast, as audiences will see Will Ferrell step away from the gags and shoot straight from the heart. A blunt heart. At one point in a comedian’s career, they feel the need to go “serious.” Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler gave this a shot and for the most part it worked out. The same can now be said for Ferrell. Nick Halsey (Will Ferrell) is a “textbook” salesman who delivers results...

When 15-year-old Emma lands a competitive spot on a young women’s equestrian acrobatics team, she is taken under the wing of her slightly older peer Cassandra. Obsessed with strength and control, Emma covets Cassandra’s natural grace and poise, while Cassandra in turn silently desires more than just Emma’s discipline. The psychological stakes of their friendship intensify as the two jockey for top position, and loyalty is traded for unbridled power. Meanwhile, Emma’s curious and innocent eight-year-old sister (in a remarkably complex performance delivered by rising star Isabella Lindquist) is prematurely spurred to confront the treacherous frontiers of sexuality and womanhood on her own.
Lisa Aschan’s award-winning directorial debut digs between the cracks of human behavior to reveal the seemingly naïve experience of girlhood as a feeding ground for underhanded brutality and rivalry. Using naturalistic direction, evocative imagery, and engrossing performances, Aschan smartly...

The summer movie season is here, and that means one thing: Air Conditioning!!! Also, we get to watch some cool movies with our air conditioning ticket.
There will be some familiar if not downright iconic faces to greet us there, but who's not looking to make some new friends? Lucky for us Hollywood is dishing out a promising group of cinematic newcomers who just might have made the leap to stardom by the time school's back in session -- including two sons, one daughter and one cousin of pop culture royalty.
Here's a list of actors on the cusp of becoming big-time screen idols.
Chris Hemsworth

We are two days away now from the official kick-off of the summer blockbuster season, with the arrival in theaters of Thor on Friday (although, the Spring's last entry, Fast Five has already stolen some summer thunder) and as we always do the week of, we're looking ahead to bring some attention to the smaller films of summer. The blockbusters -- we'll get to those, later. But even if we don't, there's no one among you that needs a reminder that Green Lantern or X-Men First Class will be arriving in theaters. I think Marvel actually hired a guy to stand next to me all day and yell Captain America F*ck Yeah! in my ear. Annoying little fucker. But at least I know that Max Casella (Doogie Howser's best friend) is gainfully employed.
This summer's small movie offerings don't have a lot of the sexy choices of previous summers,...

Welcome to Part Three of my 2011 Summer Movie Preview, if you haven't yet checked out parts one and two you've missed a lot already. I've linked to my look at the "Blockbusters" and the "Comedies" of the 2011 summer movie season, but if you wanted to click over to those articles before diving into this one I don't think anyone would blame you.
Oh, it looks like you're still here, well, for the moviegoer more interested in the dramatic and art house movies, this summer doesn't offer only blockbusters, explosions and animated characters. There's a healthy dose of the dramatic available as well as evidenced by the following 14 films I've chosen to highlight.
Now I know I mixed in images and trailers in the first two installments, but I am going strictly with trailers this time, because some of these aren't as familiar as those bigger films I mentioned in the Blockbusters and Comedies preview.

Like Will Ferrell’s last dramatic turn Stranger Than Fiction, Everything Must Go is a bittersweet tale of an Everyman’s redemption with the curly-haired comedian in the role of flailing antihero. Sadly, despite a few moments of well-captured tenderness, Everything is ultimately a bland affair.
Based on Raymond Carver’s short story “Why Don’t You Dance?” Everything centers on Nick Hasley, a man who loses his home, job, car, savings, wife, cell phone, and dignity before the film hits the ten-minute mark. He’s an alcoholic struggling to get sober while begrudgingly living on his front lawn after his estranged wife locked him out of their home. Now, Nick has three days to pull himself together before he’ll be dragged off to jail for vagrancy. While festering in his yard surrounded by his discarded material possessions, Nick strikes up an unlikely friendship with a sweet latchkey kid...

Now in its 10th year, legendary actor Robert De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival is once again on the horizon and this year, the fest is cooking up more innovative programming and side projects then ever before. Sundance might be the end all be all of independent film, but the downtown Manhattan staple is creeping right up alongside it -- and they have the support to prove it.
This year's judges include Michael Cera, Whoopi Goldberg, David O. Russell, Jason Sudeikis, Nora Ephron, Anna Kendrick and more. Tribeca means business!
Along with a film line-up of star-filled indies, eclectic world cinema and a few intriguing unknowns hoping to generate buzz, the fest is also introducing a new on-demand system that will allow many of the films at the festival to be viewed by you in the comfort of your own home.
So what can you expect emerging from the festival?...

Given the right material, Will Ferrell can make a movie that successfully blends comedy and drama, as he did in Stranger than Fiction. Here, Everything Must Go is based on the writings of famed short-story writer, Raymond Carver, and the premise is neat -- a man who has lost his wife and job decides to live out on his lawn, where he holds a yard sale to get rid of his stuff -- but the payoff, I suspect, will be what makes the film. It reminds of of Clooney's backpack speech in Up in the Air: Think of how much lighter that backpack would be if we unloaded all of our possessions, how much more freely we could move around in the world. I suspect that that's the thematic through line in Everything Must Go, even if the trailer focuses largely on Biggie Small's kid, Christopher Jordan Wallace, and...

Christopher Jordan Wallace, son of hip-hop icon Notorious B.I.G., is treading back to the silver screen for the second time in a slightly different role after playing the younger version of his father in the film Notorious, this time co-starring alongside Will Ferrell in Everything Must Go.
The film, which is an adaptation of author Raymond Carver's short story Why Don't You Dance, also features Faith Evans, and officially releases on May 13th. Supposedly, Will Ferrell isn't expected to be very funny, and from the trailer, the movie really just looks like the tale of a guy living in a yard sale and being friends with Biggie's son.

Will Ferrell is trying his hand at comedy-drama a second time (after the generally well received but not gigantically successful Stranger Than Fiction) with Everything Must Go, a film about an alcoholic who loses his job and his wife on the same day. (To divorce, that is. Not to death or the white slave trade.) Kicked out of his house, he takes up residence on his lawn with all his stuff, and the only way to not get in trouble for that is to call it a yard sale. There's also some romantic jazz going on with his cute neighbor. That's all well and good, but the most interesting thing about this trailer is that it prominently features Christopher Jordan Wallace, who is Biggie Smalls' kid! He looks so much like his father, it's a bit unnerving: So similar! (In fact, Wallace's only other role [...]...

First "Everything Must Go" trailer has been unveiled. The video, released via Apple, follows the unfortunate Will Ferrell's Nick Porter who is sacked from his job and left by his wife. Trying to have a better life, he starts selling all his stuff.

When he returns home, his wife has changed the lock on their home and dumped all his possessions out on the front yard. The new indie comedy Everything Must Go starring Will Ferrel now has a poster and a trailer. The story follows a man (Ferrell) who, after being laid off, decides to sell all of his possessions in one huge yard sale. Ferrell has always played the loud-mouthed, borderline-obnoxious character that’s usually pretty eccentric. That doesn’t seem to be the case here as Ferrell’s character seems to be more down to Earth. This role is very reminiscent of his role in Stranger Than Fiction. The film opened up at the Toronto Film Festival last year and received pretty good reviews.
The film also stars Rebecca Hall, Michael Peña, Laura Dern, Stephen Root and Christopher Jordan Wallace. Everything Must Go is currently set to hit theaters on May 13, 2011. Check out the trailer after the jump.

- If It's Movies
In late 2009 Dan Rush started turning Raymond Carver's short story Why Don't You Dance? into a film called Everything Must Go, starring Will Farrell in a very rare dramatic turn. He plays an alcoholic who, in the same day, loses his job and is thrown out by his wife. With his possessions scattered on the lawn of his former home, he spends a week living out in the open and confronting his problems. There's now a trailer for the film, so you can get a taste of how that all goes down. The film premiered at Tiff last year and was generally well-received, though there were reviews that said Will Ferrell's acting wasn't quite up to the task of dredging the depths of his character. While I won't go so far as to say the trailer affirms that criticism, I will say that the way this footage is...

Natalie Portman’s extraordinary performance in Black Swan may have been a foregone conclusion, but there were some delightful moments in the Toronto International Film Festival that took me by surprise. Here are a few: The Metaphysical Clint Eastwood:The guy can do anything, sure. But who knew he wanted to explore such a big, ethereal question as what happens after you die? In Hereafter, he intertwines three stories of people who have brushes with death, including Matt Damon as a reluctant psychic, slowly unspooling their lives, then bringing them together in unexpected and not altogether tidy ways.
