I hear a lot of casual horror fans talking about the lack of quality horror films in recent years... and to some extent they have a point. Studio-funded horror films seem to be less prevalent than they were three decades ago, and many mass-marketed horror films are lighter on gore, nudity, and the like than the features of yesteryear (with the obvious exception of the Evil Dead reboot). But there are still plenty of quality horror films being made – it’s just incumbent upon horror fans to look a little harder. There are a plethora of well-made horror pictures being released every year; they just aren’t all getting the mainstream attention that they deserve. In an attempt to remedy that, and shine the spotlight on some outstanding films that haven’t received a great deal of publicity, we are showcasing five titles from the past five years that may have passed you by,...

Let’s face it… vampires have been done to death. Whether it’s the hundreds of Dracula films, the Twilight franchise or True Blood and The Vampire Diaries on TV, the fanged ones have had their time in the sun. Back in 2006, the independent feature titled The Hamiltons was released as part of the After Dark Horror Festival.
Having watched almost every entry in the After Dark series up to that point, I wasn’t expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. Now some six years later, directors “The Butcher Brothers” (Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores) have returned with most of the first film’s cast to give us The Thompsons, the sequel to The Hamiltons.
Picking up after a particularly unpleasant event between the two films (dramatized here for exposition), The Hamiltons have changed their name yet again, to The Thompsons and leave for England fleeing the law.

A sequel to The Hamiltons, The Thompsons is an indie horror film directed by Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores aka the Butcher Brothers, which premiered at the London FrightFest Film Festival on August 26th, 2012.
We have an exclusive clip if you’re interested learning more about a sequel to 2006s fugitive vampire clan movie, which is being described as ‘Twilight meets Tarantino’.
Now available on DVD and Blu-ray, a movie about pretty teenage vampires stars Corey Knauf, Samuel Child, Joseph McKelheer, Mackenzie Firgens, Ryan Hartwig, Elizabeth Henstridge, Sean Browne, and Tim Holloway.
The effects are a mixture of practical and digital and have been upgraded from the original. However, the action sequences are still very unrealistic, as well as the fight scenes were poorly put together.
Check out the exclusive clip along with the official trailer and cover art below.

Directors/writers: The Butcher Brothers (Mitchell Altieri, Phil Flores). Cast: Cory Knauf, Samuel Child, Elizabeth Henstridge, Daniel O'Meara, Mackenzie Firgens, Ryan Hartwig, Sean Browne, Tom Holloway, Joseph McKelheer, and Selina Giles. The Thompsons is a sequel to the 2006 film The Hamiltons. Both films deal with a vampire clan in search of ever more blood to drink. This reviewer is unfamiliar with the first film, but this second title can be seen on its own. Centrally, The Thompsons is a story of Francis (Cory Knauf). His voice over narration guides the story from the United States over to the United Kingdom. His journey is full of violence with his brothers and sisters looking for aid for the fallen Lenny (Ryan Hartwig). They do not find help, but they do find a malevolent vampire clan bent on destroying them. The Butcher Brothers (Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores) have created a fantastic tale...

Good to see The Thompsons moving steadily in the right direction. Everything we've seen so far has indicated that The Butcher Brothers' sequel to The Hamiltons was going to get the type of rating that genre fans love, and today we've got glorious confirmation.
All the regulars return -- Cory Knauf, Samuel Child, Joseph McKelheer, and Mackenzie Firgens -- in this sequel that follows the Hamiltons as they sneak into a new town. Ryan Hartwig, Daniel O'Meara, and Selina Giles also star. The horror follow-up is rated R for brutal bloody violence, some strong sexuality, nudity and language.

The Thompsons (2012) Directorial duo The Butcher Brothers (aka Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores) follow up their 2006 family themed vampire flick “The Hamiltons” with “The Thompsons”, offering up more of the same as the clan quit the Us for the English countryside after an unfortunate incident has them on the run from the police. With older brother David (Samuel Child, also in the Brothers’ “The Violent Kind”) looking after the gravely injured youngest family member Lenny (Ryan Hartwig, recently in Steven C. Miller’s awesome “The Aggression Scale”) while the twins (Mackenzie Firgens and Joseph McKellheer) lurk in Paris, it’s left to Francis (Corey Knauf) to follow up a vague lead on other vampires in a small village called Ludlow in rural England. There he meets the Stuart family, upper class vampires who initially offer their help, but quickly are revealed to have their own less than decent intentions. Coming in below the radar,...

In medical terms, the Aggression Scale is described as: “a psychological test measuring the frequency of overt aggressive behaviours that may result in physical or psychological injury to others”. If this film literally The Aggression Scale and lead character Owen is being tested on, then the kid has a high level of aggression and that is what makes the film so fun.
Mob boss Bellavance is out of jail and needs to skip bail fast, the problem he has is that somebody appears to have stolen $500,000 of his money. To get this back he sends out the four best hard-core hit men he has to find the culprit and kill them, retrieving his money in the process. The answer can be found in violent indie thriller The Aggression Scale, coming to Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay on September 3, 2012.

But when the killers invade the Rutledge home, they’ll meet the household’s emotionally disturbed young son Owen (Ryan Hartwig). Drive has opened the stylistic doors for smart crime films, such as the forthcoming The Aggression Scale.
Look, I know that’s a bold move on my part, linking what was likely last year’s film most beloved by crime buffs to this new indie crime flick, the second directorial effort of Steven C. Miller. But the latest trailer for this 2012 SXSW buzz-maker really gives a Drive feel, right down to the hot-pink lettering for the titles. It also takes a subtle tack with the viewer, eschewing any dialogue in favor of silent shots of guys chasing our teen heroes and screaming a lot, all beneath a simple piano soundtrack that is almost Carpenter-esque.
Basically, I’ve got a good feeling. Dig it:
And yes, you did catch a glimpse of Ray Wise in there. I know, that only sweetens the deal, doesn’t it?
Ray Wise is probably most...

In The Aggression Scale a pair of meddling kids get the best of a group of killers after their house is infiltrated. Saying more about this ultra-violent flick would ruin many of its best surprises; suffice to say it's like Home Alone if Kevin McAllister were the love child of Rambo and MacGyver.

Featuring: Ray Wise, Dana Ashbrook, Derek Mears, Boyd Kestner, Fabienne Therese, Ryan Hartwig
SXSW's Midnighter films are known for being the edgiest, most gruesome and unflinching offerings the festival has to offer each year; titles like last year's Kill List go on to acquire great acclaim and cult followings after they reach mainstream distribution, and I believe that The Aggression Scale is a film destined for such a future.
Ray Wise is impeccably cast as Bellavance, a big-time mafioso who is out on a $1.5 million bail note after a span of time spent behind bars; he has 48 hours to pay the bail back or he heads into prison again for good. Upon his release from the big house, he discovers that one of the people he deals with has stolen a vast quantity of money from him, undercutting his ability to pay the note.

"The Aggression Scale" is like "Home Alone" with more death. If only it were as good a time as that description might lead you to believe. Directed by Steven C. Miller, who last made the Syfy Original "Scream of the Banshee," the movie is a schlocky pleasure when it finally gets around to delivering on its premise of a dysfunctional teen with violent tendencies taking on a group of thugs. But the build to that point is long, overly serious and reliant on actors and dialogue that aren't up to holding the screen through extended periods of talking or layering on of atmosphere. Character development is a quality of which genre films are often seriously in need, but it feels more like filler when your characters make no sense to begin with and most of them are just slaughter fodder.

Getting its debut at this year’s SXSW festival next month, The Aggression Scale has already been picked up in advance by Anchor Bay, and it’s being described as in the vein of A History of Violence with a younger cast.
The first trailer for the film has gone online ahead of its premiere, via Collider, and it’s a promising, action-fuelled, eerie first look at the film. Screening as part of the festival’s Midnighters line-up, THR report that the film
“is described as being in the spirit of the 1980s canon and in the vein of A History of Violence but with the teens as the heroes, taking on four hitmen over $500,000 in stolen cash.”
Directed by Steven C. Miller (Automaton Transfusion) and written by Ben Powell (Satanic), the film stars Fabianne Therese (the upcoming John Dies at the End), Ryan Hartwig (The Death of Socrates), Ray Wise...

Here is the trailer for The Aggression Scale, thanks to Heat Vision. Steven C. Miller directed this genre film, which will have a world premiere at SXSW as part of the Midnighters program. The pic is described as a being "in the spirit of the 1980s canon and in the vein of A History of Violence but with the teens as the heroes, taking on four hitmen over $500,000 in stolen cash."
The cast includes Fabianne Therese (John Dies at the End), Ryan Hartwig (The Thompsons), Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks), Derek Mears (Friday the 13th), Jacob Reynolds (Gummo), Joseph McKelheer (The Hamiltons), and Ray Wise (Twin Peaks).
Miller directed this film based on a script by Ben Powell. I loved A History of Violence and like the fact that this has two people from Twin Peaks. The song used in the trailer makes sets the tone for a cool looking film.
