Scale, sweep, or schadenfreude; whatever you might be seeking in the films of Kevin Costner, you tend to walk away with the vistas. Think of the golden plains and stampeding buffalo of his directorial debut Dances with Wolves; or the jaw-dropping aerial shot of scavengers circling the atoll in Waterworld; and lest we forget The Postman, a work even the most harebrained viewers haven’t found the energy to reappraise, which still left you with an image of The Sound of Music projected onto a quarry wall, not to mention that statue of himself constructed for the film’s whacky finale. For better or worse, they aren’t easily forgotten.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the new trailer and character posters for New Line Cinema’s Horizon: An American Saga, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kevin Costner. Horizon: An American Saga is a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West.
A story of Americana and patriotism too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-wrote the script with Jon Baird (The Explorers Guild) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute two films in the saga this summer – the first on June 28, 2024, followed quickly by the second on August 16, 2024. The first film is rated R for violence, some nudity, and sexuality.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat, and tears of many.

Kevin Costner‘s two-part western epic passion project is just over the horizon. The first part of Horizon: An American Saga premieres next month and Warner Bros. has just released the new official second trailer for the film. The Yellowstone actor has returned to the director’s seat for the first time in over twenty years for these films. Costner began work on this story in 1988 and he has more movies planned. The main character that he invented for this film in 1988 was so important to him that he even named his son, Hayes, after him. He hopes the movies can be a big franchise and that years from now, people can binge-watch hours of Horizon in theaters.
In addition to directing and starring in the two-film saga, Kevin Costner also produced the project and co-wrote the script alongside Jon Baird. “In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns,...

We’re big champions of physical media here at JoBlo, and despite ongoing claims that it will soon be going the way of the Dodo, we’ve yet to see its demise. Kevin Costner is also a big fan of physical media, and when asked by Deadline about the supposed “death of the DVD,” he was quick to jump to its defence.
“Death of the what? DVD is not dead, at all,” Kevin Costner said. “That’s what they’d have you believe. Maybe it’s not making the same amount of money, but just try to go ask for that from the studio. They won’t give that up. A lot of people that like my movies, they can’t get to a theater, and they’re waiting for that moment. You can’t make your film for the opening weekend. You have to make it for its life.

Hold onto your horses, folks! Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is riding into CinemaCon 2024 to share the latest about the Yellowstone and Dances With Wolves star’s Western epic. On Monday, we learned the first part of Horizon: An American Saga, which will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19. Still, attendees moseying into CinemaCon got a new look at the sprawling drama of how settlers won the West.
During the Warner Bros. panel, Costner addressed the CinemaCon crowd, saying the movie is a bit about the promise of America. The idea was that if you were mean enough, tough enough, you could take what you wanted, but in the process, you stepped on people who had been here for 1000 years. But the film does not pass judgment, and that story, to him, was drama.

Kevin Costner’s hugely ambitious western saga arrives this summer: here’s the new trailer, but no UK release yet.
Regular readers of this site may be already aware just how much I’m looking forward to the most ambitious Kevin Costner project in years. It’s Horizon: An American Saga, a series of four films that Costner is part-funding. Just as with his last directorial effort, the brilliant 2003 western Open Range, he’s independently funded the movie, and brought in distributors afterwards.
In the US, it’s New Line Cinema – and thus Warner Bros – that’s going to be releasing the first two films, both of which are coming out this summer. The first lands in June, the second lands in August, and both are getting US cinema releases.
As far as I’ve been able to ascertain, and heck I’ve been looking, there’s been no deal...

Kevin Costner on Monday shared on socials a first trailer for Horizon, the two-part Western epic that played a role in his growing frustrations with his Yellowstone experience.

Part one of “Horizon: An American Saga,” the multi-film Western epic that Kevin Costner left “Yellowstone” to make, will hit theaters on June 28, with part two to follow on August 16. Warner Bros. released a trailer for the two-part film on Monday.
The trailer promises a sprawling, colorful, violent Western film about Manifest Destiny. It’s about the settling of the titular town during the years of the Civil War, as the American frontier pushes westward and settlers come into conflict with the people indigenous to the land. “There’s no army on this Earth that are going to stop those wagons coming,” a Union Army officer played by Costner’s “Yellowstone” co-star Danny Huston warns in something like the trailer’s thesis statement.

Sorting through America’s history is a Herculean task. Humans built the nation with blood, sweat, and tears, watering the soil with memory, pain, and perseverance. Today, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga trailer explores the settlement of America’s Western frontier from the Indigenous groups who blessed the land to those who occupied it by force. Horizon will be Kevin Costner‘s first time directing a movie since Open Range in 2003. He also busted out his directing chops for The Postman and Dances with Wolves, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director.
Kevin Costner’s Horizon will “span 15 years in the settlement of America’s Western frontier, and focus on both the settlers as well as the Indigenous groups that first occupied the land.”
Here’s the official synopsis for Horizon: An American Saga courtesy of Warner Bros.:

Oscar winning director Kevin Costner ("Dances With Wolves") and star of the 'neo-western' TV series "Yellowstone", continues shooting his new feature movie series "Horizon: An American Saga", receiving an 'R' rating for "violence, nudity and sexuality," chronicling a multi-faceted, 15-year span of pre- and post-'Civil War' expansion in the settlement of the American Old West, releasing in theaters June 28, 2024:
"A lot of times we measure ourselves against other generations," said Costner about his new film series.
"I think about what was at stake. How did people survive? There's a rawness and an unpredictability about it. I'm haunted by that."
Costner, in addition to directing, will star in "Horizon", alongside his teenage son Hayes Costner, who also has a role in the film, playing the young Costner.
Cast also includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jamie Campbell Bower, Luke Wilson, Thomas Haden Church, Michael Rooker, Jena Malone, Isabelle Fuhrman, Alejandro Edda.

Amid baked goods and cheerful introductions, a group of white women hold a meeting inside a small-town church. But before the first slice of pie has been eaten, the seemingly innocuous gathering sheds the veneer of innocence to reveal its atrocious intent.
One of the most audacious American debuts of the year, writer-director Beth de Araújo’s “Soft & Quiet” shocks one’s system from its opening moments and doesn’t ever slow down to let you fully process it as it happens. A whirlwind of increasingly horrifying hate speech that turns into actual violence, the film plays out in real time and was shot to give the impression of being a single take, making for a deliberately intense and disturbing experience.
The newly founded club is led by Emily (Stefanie Estes), a kindergarten teacher poisoning young minds, and exists to peddle white-supremacist ideologies. As they collectively complain about people...

Blumhouse Productions is one of the biggest names in the horror genre these days – and the folks at Blumhouse were so impressed by writer/director Beth de Araújo’s feature debut Soft & Quiet that they decided to put the company name on the movie ahead of its festival premiere, even though they weren’t involved in the making of it. The film has since landed a distribution deal with Momentum Pictures in the US, Canada, and the UK, and will be receiving a theatrical and VOD release on November 4th. With that date drawing near, a trailer for Soft & Quiet has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

A much-talked-about premiere at SXSW earlier this year, Beth de Araújo’s thriller Soft & Quiet, shot in real-time, follows a single afternoon in the life of an elementary school teacher, Emily. She organizes an inaugural club meeting of like-minded women as their racist proclivities soon bubble up and a nightmare of white supremacy plays out. Starring Stefanie Estes, Olivia Luccardi, Eleanore Pienta, Dana Millican, Melissa Paulo, Jon Beavers, and Cissy Ly, the first trailer has now arrived ahead of a release on November 4.
John Fink said in his review, “Told in real-time across one (seemingly) unbroken shot, Beth de Araújo’s Soft & Quiet is perhaps the most provocative film to screen at SXSW this year. If it doesn’t quite fit the bill as a traditional horror film, that doesn’t mean there isn’t terror lurking under its surface. Speaking after the screening, de Araujo said her intention is...

The ensemble cast features Stefanie Estes, Olivia Luccardi, Eleanore Pienta, Dana Millican, & Melissa Paulo, with Jon Beavers, Cissy Ly, Nina E. Jordan, & Rebekah Wiggins. Told in real-time across one (seemingly) unbroken shot, Beth de Araújo’s Soft & Quiet is perhaps the most provocative film to screen at SXSW this year. If it doesn’t quite fit the bill as a traditional horror film, that doesn’t mean there isn’t terror lurking under its surface. Speaking after the screening, de Araujo said her intention is to have the audience witness a hate crime play out in real-time. The film is much more—it’s a political indictment of the kind of frank, racist conversations that can play out amongst a group of like-minded (awful) individuals who are careful to moderate their tone. It’s the kind of wink, wink, nod, nod, coded language used to pull moderate voters into your cause—be it a politician in a sweater vest or a soccer mom in Target is saying it, is it that bad?...

Hardly for the first time, Blumhouse has its name on a horror melodrama fueled by a strong pulse of politically topical blood running through its veins, this time with the ironically titled Soft & Quiet. In fact, Beth de Araújo’s debut feature is far more notable for its throbbing political outrage than for its dramatic credibility, which becomes increasingly hard to swallow as the yarn unravels. But righteous young and lefty audiences will enjoy getting cranked up by the increasingly outrageous behavior exhibited by a group of aggrieved and incensed right-wing women whose idea of taking matters into their own hands goes more than a bit too far.
If it weren’t for the up-front ideological issues propelling the action here, the writer-director’s bow would certainly have been most noted for her decision to deliver the 91-minute film in one take, even though this feat has now been...

That homemade cherry pie you see Emily carrying in the opening scene of “Soft & Quiet”? It’s not what you think. But then, neither is Emily, a tall blond kindergarten teacher who cuts through the woods behind school to attend a gathering of like-minded women. Women who call themselves “Daughters for Aryan Unity” and complain about concepts such as “reverse racism.” Upon arriving, Emily removes the aluminum foil and reveals a giant swastika carved into the crust. It’s her idea of a joke — like the transgressive Nazi salute she sneaks in the parking lot after the meeting.
You know what else Emily tells herself is just a joke? Gathering her spiteful white friends and driving out to the house of a local waitress — a woman who isn’t white, and who doesn’t fit Emily’s narrow idea of racial superiority — with the goal of confiscating her passport.

There’s a euphoria among film sellers and buyers as SXSW finally convenes Friday in Austin, Texas after a three-year pandemic shutdown.
With the last two editions of the Sundance Film Festival being virtual, and the hybrid edition of TIFF seeing reduced capacities, few industry execs, and a muted atmosphere, SXSW marks the return to packed, receptive audiences; actual live pulses which can trigger good reviews and social media wattage, culminating in what some believe could be an active sales market here in Texas’s capital.
SXSW has a knack for programming comedies, genre, and genre-twisted features; titles which are best experienced by a reactive audience. Sellers previously told Deadline that virtual viewing of such fare at recent fests doesn’t really help their cause. While SXSW is enforcing vaxx cards and mask-wearing indoors, screenings will be at full capacity. In 2019, SXSW drew a reported 73K attendees alone to the...

Exclusive: Blumhouse is coming on board Beth de Araújo’s SXSW debut Soft & Quiet, which is making its festival premiere in the narrative feature competition on Saturday.
CAA Media Finance and Blumhouse are selling the feature at SXSW.
The movie is writer-director Araújo’s feature length debut, and as part of the agreement, the film will be branded a Blumhouse feature.
The thriller, which plays out in real time, follows a single afternoon in the life of an elementary school teacher as she organizes a mixer of like-minded women. When the group heads home, the teacher encounters a woman from her past, leading to a volatile chain of events.
“I’m thrilled Jason and the Blumhouse team responded so strongly to Soft & Quiet. They are such a recognizable and trusted brand for audiences,” Araújo said. “Blumhouse has consistently put out films that are daring and resonate with viewers.

The real reason Will (Jabari Banks) moves to L.A.? A basketball game gone wrong after someone pulls a gun.
Or in other words, he relocates after “a couple of guys who were up to no good started making trouble in my neighborhood.”
Peacock’s “Bel-Air,” the highly-anticipated reimagining of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” introduces West Philadelphia born-and-raised native Banks in the role that made Will Smith a household name. Smith serves as an executive producer on the fresh take on the ’90s series, inspired by director and co-writer Morgan Cooper’s 2019 fan-made trailer addressing modern-day issues.
“Bel-Air” is set to premiere on Peacock on Super Bowl Sunday, February 13, with three episodes at launch and new episodes released every Thursday. The series is already picked up for two seasons.
