More than 400 prominent female writers and showrunners sent a letter today to the heads of the major studios expressing their “grave concerns” about the companies’ “lack of specific production protocols” to protect their workers in anti-abortion states.
The letters, which state that “it is unacceptable to ask any person to choose between their human rights and their employment,” also demanded that the companies “pledge to discontinue all political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees immediately.”
Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about the Feb. 1 episode of NBC’s This Is Us, titled “Heart and Soul”.
Love was in the air during the last This is Us episode before Valentine’s Day as the NBC family drama goes on hiatus for the Winter Olympics.
Nicky, who is overseeing the construction of the new house Kevin is building by the Pearson family cabin, is excited — and nervous — as he hosts his new love Edie for her first overnight stay.
Kevin invites Cassidy to the cabin, and the two share a few sweet moments while washing dishes after Randall proclaims her as the come-from-behind winner in the Kevin Pearson sweepstakes “by a hundredth of a second.” Madison and Eli from book club are practically inseparable, and he spends so much time at her house that he gives Kevin his number in case of emergency.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Tuesday’s “This Is Us.”)
“This Is Us” took fans on several literal journeys with Tuesday’s episode, “The Ride,” which followed Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore); Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Madison (Caitlin Thompson); Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson); and Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) as they brought home new babies. With each of these different trips, we learned more about the micro-units of the Pearson clan — and even got a glimpse into their future with yet another cryptic flash-forward.
Here to break down all the twists and turns for TheWrap is Jon Huertas, the director of tonight’s episode, who also plays Miguel on the NBC family drama.

Ahead of its formal debut Thursday, NBCUniversal has put six projects in development at Peacock, including a revival of Will Forte’s “MacGruber.”
Additional projects include a transgender themed drama executive produced by and starring Laverne Cox, a comedy based on the McElroy family’s “Dungeons & Dragons” podcast, and others from Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling.
“MacGruber” will see Forte return as his “SNL” character, a spoof of “MacGyver.” The character appeared in a number sketches and starred in a 2010 movie alongside Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Val Kilmer and Maya Rudolph. The character was created by Jorma Taccone, a member of The Lonely Island musical comedy group that also featured “SNL” alum Andy Samberg.

Ahead of Comcast’s investor presentation today to officially unveil NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service Peacock, the platform has announced its inaugural development slate. It includes comedies MacGruber, starring and co-written by Will Forte; and Clean Slate, starring and co-written by Laverne Cox and George Wallace. Creative auspices on Peacock’s series in development also include Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Norman Lear and Lorne Michaels, among others. The projects come from within NBCUniversal Content Studios — from both Universal TV and Ucp — as well as from outside studios, Warner Bros. and Sony.
From the get-go, Peacock’s original series slate had a comedy bent, with sequels to sitcoms Saved By the Bell and Punky Brewster among the platform’ first orders, along with pickups for A.P. Bio and Ed Helms-Mike Schur comedy Rutherford Falls.

Last year’s Producers Guild Awards told us which movie — “The Shape of Water” — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact 20 of the previous winners of this important prize have then gone on to Best Picture victories.
For the 30th annual PGA ceremony slated for Saturday evening, January 19, at the Beverly Hilton, we already know that the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. Could it be a blockbuster like “A Star Is Born,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “Black Panther”? Or maybe a critical favorite such as “Roma,” “Green Book” or “The Favourite”?

The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. That is three days before the academy announces the nominations for the Oscars. While the PGA ceremony is not televised, it is an important stop on the road to the Oscars.
The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 20 of the most recent 29 Best Picture champs, including last year’s double winner. “The Shape of Water.”
Since both groups expanded the Best Picture category, the PGA has predicted 70 of the 81 of the Best Picture nominees over the past nine years. Last year the guild went seven for nine in previewing the Oscars line-up: “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “The Post,” “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The other four guild nominees were “The Big Sick,...

Now we know what the most popular movies are vying for Oscars this year: The Producers Guild of America’s motion picture and television nominations went mainstream. Winners will be revealed at the 30th Annual Producers Guild Awards, to be held January 19 at the Beverly Hilton.
Many of these films will wind up on the the final list of Oscar nominations to be revealed on January 22; the eventual winners are here as well. That does not mean that “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “A Quiet Place,” or “Crazy Rich Asians” will land Best Picture nominations, but it is a sign of strength and popularity. Oscar voters tend to take degree of difficulty in production into consideration, and may lean into big box office hits this year.
(Left off the PGA list are long-shot Best Picture contenders “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” and “First Man.”)

This week, on Parenthood: Julia accepts some blame, Crosby eavesdrops, and Sarah makes a choice
Parenthood knocked it out of the park last week by focusing in on the difficult transitions happening for Julia, Sydney and Victor, and Amy. It was somewhat of a respite, with the various Bravermans coming to each other’s aid and generally being the best versions of themselves. This week that break is extended somewhat, with each of the main storylines in a holding pattern. While the episode is entertaining, it’s far from essential and indicative of the growing pains present this season, with the series that so excellently adapted to a shorter episode order last year straining to expand back to its full 22 episode order.

Back when NBC was about to launch "Smash" and hoping/expecting it would become a big hit, there was talk about turning its on-screen musical "Bombshell" into a real-world show.
"Smash" is no more, and the "Bombshell" idea has gone away too. But "Hit List," the other Broadway show featured in Season 2 of "Smash," is in fact making the leap from screen to stage.
54 Below, a supper club and performance space in New York, will present two performances of "Hit List" on Dec. 9. "Smash" cast members Jeremy Jordan and Andy Mientus, who played the writers of "Hit List" on the show, and Krysta Rodriguez, the in-show "Hit List" star, will star in the live show. "Smash" Season 2 showrunner Joshua Safran, writer Julia Brownell and 54 Below's Jennifer Ashley Tepper are presenting it.
The live show also means an audience will get to see the plot of "Hit List," much of which didn't make it into "Smash.

As we hurdle down the final stretch of this season’s Smash NBC announced over the weekend that this would be the last season. This was an announcement we all could have predicted. Smash hasn’t necessarily been the worst show on television this year and the original songwriting will sorely be missed. Now it’s up to Smash to properly treat all of us that have been so devoted over the past year and bow out of the series with some of those over the top, melodramatic moments that attracted viewers to Smash in the first place. And where’s a better place to begin that slow roll downhill than with some good old fashioned blackmail and an unexpected pregnancy!
First, starting with poor Ana.

Smash, Season 2, Episode 11: “The Invited Dress”
Written by: Julia Brownell
Directed by: Mimi Leder
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on NBC
Smash you disappoint me. One of the greatest attributes about your show is the female leads. In the television world we get to see a lot of men in leading roles, with females competing for supporting roles. Smash has done an excellent job of allowing a handful of strong, female actresses to take control of the show. They’ve had some wonderful story lines for those actresses, except for this episode, “The Invited Dress”, where Ivy is relied upon to flash the audience to sell more tickets. And over at Hit List Karen is loosing her lead role simply because she refuses to be involved with Derek. This is a low point for the ladies of Smash.
This week Tom is allowed to show off his more comical side,...

Smash, Season 2, Episode 6: “The Fringe”
Written by: Julia Brownell
Directed by: Dan Lerner
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm (Et) on NBC
Sometimes when approaching a new episode of Smash, it’s difficult not to think, “Not this again.” It’s not entirely terrible (okay well it’s a lot terrible); there are a lot of redeeming factors about Smash, such as the cast, the original songs, the acting, the sets, the lighting, and the location (many times New York City feels as though it’s its own character). All these things we love about Smash make it increasingly frustrating to watch a talented group wasting away, mainly because of terrible writing. The audience who has left shouldn’t be condemned because Smash doesn’t even feel like it’s trying at all.

Chicago – HBO finally broke through with their first major new comedy successes since “Entourage” this year with the amazing “Girls” and “Veep.” There were a few growing pains between the critical darlings however, a trio of shows that never quite took off like their breakthrough network hoped they would. And yet there are things to like about at least two of them and they probably have some loyal audiences who want to own them on Blu-ray. Now they can.

Ray Drecker (Thomas Jane, Give ‘Em Hell Malone)—the well-endowed former high school sports legend turned middle-aged high school basketball coach turned local gigolo—returns for digital dominance on September 27 when HBO Home Entertainment releases Hung: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray and DVD.
It's Season Two and Thomas Jane is still Hung.
The Blu-ray and DVD, which are priced at $49.98 and $39.98, respectively, will arrive on the eve of the HBO show’s Season Three premiere.
In the second season of the TV comedy series, Ray, and his unlikely pimp Tanya (Jane Adams, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) have taken on slick “life coach” Lenore Bernard (Rebecca Creskoff, Knucklehead) as co-pimp, devastating Tanya in the process. With Lenore pushing a debonair version of hooker Ray on her upscale clients, Tanya wants to prove she has the “right stuff” when it comes to being a successful – and far more ethical – pimp than Lenore.

HBO Has spilled the beans on what it has in store for Hung fans this year. Thomas Jane will be returning as the everyman-turned-gigolo. Hung turned out to be one of the better comedy dramas to hit the airwaves last year, and I, for one, can't wait to see what moral slippery slopes Jane's Ray Drecker winds up on this season. From the looks of this press-release, it looks like the Hung writers room is amping things up a bit.

Jessica Biel is attached to star in and produce screenwriter Julia Brownell's original screenplay "F***ing Engaged." The film is a raunchy comedy about a couple who make a pact to have sex every day leading to their wedding so they don't turn into their parents. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Glen Basner and Aaron Ryder of FilmNation Entertainment are financing and producing. Brownell developed the script with producers Dan Halsted ("Garden State") and Cameron Bunce, who got Biel and her Iron Ocean Films producing partner Michelle Purple interested. Halsted, Bunce and Purple also will produce. It is the first script sale for Brownell, who is a playwright from the Mfa theater program at Nyu's Tisch School of the Arts.

The full title of the movie is “F**king Engaged”, but you can expect plenty of asterisks in the title cause, gosh, Americans aren’t ready to spell out “f**king”! (Hell, even I’m not doing it! God, we suck.) Anyways, former “Seventh Heaven” teenager Jessica Biel is all grown up and engaged. Effin’ engaged, as it turns out. The actress, soon to be seen in Joe Carnahan’s “The A-Team”, will star and produce a raunchy comedy called “F**king Engaged”, a movie title that will surely be changed by the time the film approaches production (or if they’re slightly brave, until the release date approaches, but make no mistake about it, it’s gonna get changed). Written by Julia Brownell, the comedy will star Biel as one-half of a couple (the sexy, fantasy-worthy half) who make a pact to have sex every day leading up to...

The Hollywood Reporter today broke news that will be sure to tarnish the image of squeaky clean (yawn inspiring) gym bunny Jessica Biel. Jess has signed on to produce and star in Julia Brownell’s debut feature F*cking Engaged. The ‘raunchy comedy’ centres around a couple who pledge to have sex every day in the approach to their wedding to avoid turning into their parents. It sounds hilarious.
Biel, currently shooting her role as sassy Carissa Sosa in the new A-Team Movie, will next be seen in romantic comedy Nailed alongside Catherine Keener and Jake Gyllenhall. We hold out more hope for this and for the spring release of ensemble comedy Valentine’s Day in which she will reportedly appear. Nevertheless, tabloids worldwide will be delighted they may finally (and explicitly) confirm that Jessica Biel is engaged. Jess herself might also be rather glad of a role where she...

What's the best way to make Hollywood see past your sexy looks? Star in a sex comedy! No? Well someone's in for a shock then... The Hollywood Reporter posts that Jessica Biel will star in a new comedy called F***ing Engaged.
The brainchild of new screenwriter Julia Brownell (developed with Dan Halsted and Cameron Bunce), the flick is aiming to be "a raunchy comedy about a couple who make a pact to have sex every day leading to their wedding so they don't turn into their crusty old parents." Correct me if I'm wrong, married folks, but isn't the whole sexless crustiness due to sexless lives after the marriage, rather than before? If anything, I'd imagine that overdoing the sex pre-wedding would kill the hormones quicker. And who will play the lucky bloke?

Oh dear. The teenage boy within me loves this story, and I’m sure this movie will make a lot of moolah specifically for that reason.
Jessica Biel has signed on to star in F***ing Engaged, based on a script by Julia Brownell (it’s unknown if the asterisks were actually in the original script, but I’d bet my bottom dollar after the debacle that was Zack and Miri that the title gets a facelift). Brownell is new on the scene, so this is her big break in Hollywood.
The film revolves around a couple who make a pact to have sex every single day up to the date of their wedding.
With a log line like that and Jessica Biel in the cast, you’ve got money in the bank.

I don't know about you, but wouldn't having sex every day maybe make them grow tired of it faster or something? Anyway, I guess it doesn't matter, considering this is a raunchy comedy and all.

Jessica Biel's body is so smoking that I'm always glad to hear the term "raunchy" being used when describing something she is doing. Unfortunately, it is never raunchy enough, but Powder Blue did suffice.

She's currently stomping around in a leather trenchcoat as the Faceman's military ex-squeeze in The A-Team, but soon after that, Jessica Biel will be shedding some layers for a "raunchy" rom-com. At the moment it's called Fucking Engaged, but we'd put money on that changing, even with asterisks. The premise is that Biel and her fiance, facing their wedding day and terrified of turning into their boring parents, vow to make sweet luuurve every single day until the big event. So, what, they're just going to stop afterwards? This sounds a bit like Let's Do It, Annie and Doug Brown's book, published last year, about reigniting the spark in their marriage by having sex every day for 100 days. Except that Annie and Doug had been married for thirteen years, while Biel and whoever won't have hitched the knot yet. I wanted to say that Jessica Biel is going places, but then I took a quick glance at her IMDb page and, well, I guess she isn't. While she's definitely been more popular than she is these days, she has rarely, if ever, transcended the "just a hot girl" role. Other than Jessica Biel's adorable face and that scene where she shows off her huge... knowledge of gay rights, why would someone go see I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry? It may be possible for Biel to save her career, though, as she's just signed onto a movie titled, F***ing Engaged. Yes, that's the title. As much as I would love for this site to be taken over by gossip items about Jessica Biel's taint and who is tickling George Clooney's thighs these days, it just plain can't go to the dogs that way. You can tell by the quality of the writing, that we take movies seriously, damn it. And for a first time writer, things are starting to get serious, because Jessica Biel will be producing and starring in the (probably R-rated) comedy Fucking Engaged, written by first-timer Julia Brownell. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story involves a couple that seeks to keep the chemistry and spark alive in their relationship so they vow to get Biblical with each other every day of their engagement. You know what they say about an apple a day. This. Sounds. Awesome. Why? Because it has easy sequel potential if it's funny - seeing a couple attempting to engage in coitus...
