Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach got away with a lot of bite-the-hand humor towards Mattel in their script for the blockbuster “Barbie” film. But the company still had a lot of questions about the script for their satirical comedy — including one scene where an exec of the company gets shot.
Gerwig and Baumbach spoke about their process writing the script for the “Barbie” film during a Thursday Q&a with “Angels in America” playwright Tony Kushner at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City. At the Q&a, the two spoke about the notes they received during their first submitted draft of the script. One note they received comes in the film’s final act, where the Kens of Barbieland compete in a beach battle. During the chaos, Will Ferrell’s fictional Mattel CEO arrives with his mob of male executives, one of which gets shot with a fake arrow in the fray.

“Barbie” screenwriters Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach recently joined Tony Kushner for a discussion about the record-breaking Warner Bros. blockbuster and revealed one of the first notes Mattel gave them on the script: Please don’t have the Mattel exec stand-in characters be shot.
In the third act of “Barbie,” an all-out beach battle takes place between the warring Ken characters. It’s at this moment that Will Ferrell, playing the fictionalized CEO of Mattel, arrives in Barbieland along with his armada of nameless male Mattel execs. At one point one of these execs gets shot with a fake arrow during the ensuing, bloodless mayhem.
“There was a note when we first turned the script it,” Baumbach told Kusher. “On page 111: ‘Does a Mattel executive have to be shot?’ At the time we were like, that should just be on the ad!’
“But all the notes had a question mark at the end,...

"Barbie" is officially a billion-dollar hit! The Greta Gerwig-directed movie hit theaters on July 21, sending fans into a bright-pink, over-the-top fantasyland where the most important person in the world is Barbie. Seventeen days after the film's release, Variety reported that "Barbie" surpassed $1 billion at the global box office, raking in $459 million in North America and $572 million internationally. Thus, it made Gerwig the first-ever solo woman filmmaker with a billion-dollar movie. "Barbie" is also the fastest Warner Bros. release (and eighth in the studio's 100-year history) to join the billion club, a record previously held by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," which accomplished the feat in 19 days.
For months, "Barbie"'s plot stayed mostly under wraps until Warner Bros. released the film's full-length trailer on May 25. In the nearly three-minute clip, all the Barbies - including star Margot Robbie's (the main Barbie) - blissfully enjoy their carefree lives in Barbie Land.

Following Barbie’s massive debut weekend, Greta Gerwig is opening up about the film’s success, criticism and if she sees a sequel in her future.
In an interview with The New York Times, published online Tuesday, when asked if she sees the Margot Robbie-led film as the start of a franchise or a complete story, the director responded, “At this moment, it’s all I’ve got.”
“I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did,” she explained. “I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream, but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.”

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is now playing in theaters nationwide, but one if its most emotional scenes might not have made it to the big screen had the filmmaker not held her ground against studio executives. In several interviews before the comedy’s theatrical release, Gerwig revealed that it was suggested she cut out the scene where Barbie (Margot Robbie) meets an elderly woman on a bench and tells her she’s beautiful.
“I love that scene so much,” Gerwig told Rolling Stone. “And the older woman on the bench is the costume designer Ann Roth. She’s a legend. It’s a cul-de-sac of a moment, in a way — it doesn’t lead anywhere. And in early cuts, looking at the movie, it was suggested, ‘Well, you could cut it. And actually, the story would move on just the same.’ And I said, ‘If I cut the scene, I...

Margot Robbie doesn’t use stunt feet.
During an interview with Fandango to promote the upcoming Greta Gerwig film “Barbie,” Robbie explained how she executed an already-iconic moment from the movie when Barbie steps out of her high heels but her feet remain perfectly arched.
“It was probably about eight takes. Wasn’t that many,” Robbie, who plays the main Barbie in the film, explained. “I walked up, we had little sticky bits on the floor, double-sided tape for the shoes, so they wouldn’t come off, so I could get my feet out of them. And I was holding onto, like, a bar. But that’s it. I wasn’t in a harness or anything like that. I just walked up, kind of held onto the bar above [the] camera.”

For actress and producer Margot Robbie, the upcoming Barbie movie is a feminist tale, but Mattel executives don’t quite agree.
In a new Time magazine feature about the brand’s history and the film’s journey to the big screen, members of Barbie‘s creative team and leading executives at the toy manufacturer turned “IP company that is managing franchises,” according to Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz, open up about the more than a decade-long journey to getting the iconic doll into live-action. One of the biggest threads of that journey is a shared vision for an inclusive take on the toy brand, which has a storied and complicated history with representing the diversity of womanhood and women’s potential.
“I knew this was not going to shy away from the parts of Barbie that are more interesting but potentially a little bit more fraught,” said actress Hari Nef, who plays Doctor Barbie.

A new cover story from Time magazine on the making of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” reveals that Mattel president and COO Richard Dickson flew to the movie’s London set at one point during production to argue with Gerwig and lead actor Margot Robbie about one scene he believed was off-brand for the company. The director and her star convinced Dickson to keep the scene in the film by performing it for him live on set.
“When you look on the page, the nuance isn’t there, the delivery isn’t there,” Robbie said.
While the scene in question was not disclosed, Dickson’s concern is further proof that the upcoming “Barbie” movie isn’t just a sanitized love letter to the famous doll. As the film’s trailer says point blank: “If you love Barbie, this movie is for you. If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you.

The official trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures’ most buzzed-about summer movie, Barbie, promises this movie’s for those who love Barbie – and for those who hate the doll. And if you were on the fence about paying for a ticket to see writer/director Greta Gerwig’s twisted take on the popular doll line, the trailer should be the deciding factor. The trailer provides a glimpse of what’s in store once the dolls leave their perfect world and discover what it’s like to live in the real world. Cue an full-on existential crisis.
