On Season 13 of So You Think You Can Dance this past summer, choreographer Nakul Dev Mahajan once again brought the magic of Bollywood to the stage. This season of the popular show had a format change with the contestants ranging from age 8 to 13 and could those kids dance! With both a group number and a duet in the final 4 show, Nakul presented the many sides of Bollywood and thrilled the audiences and especially the judges who gave them a standing ovation. I got the chance to talk with Nakul in two separate interviews about his fabulous numbers. We also touched on his life as an owner and teacher of 6 Bollywood dance schools, his work with Paula Abdul, his special choreography for several other television shows and so much more! Check out what he had to say in this fascinating and in-depth interview. Ek do teen, read on!

“Queen Sugar”
September 6, 2016 on Own
What Is It? Ava DuVernay has teamed with Oprah for this series about a family reunited by tragedy in Louisiana, and she’s brought with her an entirely female director roster (a first).
I’ll Like It If I Like… Stories set in the South, stories that feature strong female characters and stories that aren’t afraid of taking on big issues head-on.
Why Should I Care? “Queen Sugar” has its flaws, but there’s some rich filmmaking on display and there’s potential for growth with these characters.

2014 has been yet another fantastic year for television, one that continued the nichification of the medium, with highly specific and underrepresented voices breaking through in every genre. There was a comedy explosion, particularly on cable, with dozens of new series presenting confident first seasons and several returning shows reaching new heights. The dramas didn’t disappoint either, with visionary creators bringing new life to familiar settings and taking greater risks with their returning series, deepening their worlds. Throughout the year, directors and cinematographers brought lush visuals, composers pushed the auditory envelope, and an astonishing number of actors gave fantastic, memorable performances. More than a few shows delivered spectacle on a weekly basis, while others went small, deriving incredible power out of stillness and self-reflection. Some series swept the audience up, week in and week out, and others built subtly, only showing their hand in their season’s final episodes. There...

"Drop Dead Diva" is welcoming a face familiar for "So You Think You Can Dance" fans to its Season 6 premiere. Stephen "tWitch" Boss is guest-starring as Billy Donaldson, a man who hires Jane (Brooke Elliott) to help get his brother out of prison -- at any cost to himself.
"I'm hiring her to get my brother out of jail for a crime he did not commit," Boss tells Zap2it. "I feel that he's wrongfully accused and I end up selling my business and saving every penny and dime that I have to hire a big-time lawyer."
"My brother is played by Corbin Bleu, which is awesome," Boss continues, "because I've never worked with Corbin before, but small world, my wife [Allison Holker] actually did 'High School Musical' one and two with Corbin."
Boss is perhaps best known for when he burst onto the TV dancing scene in 2007 on "So You Think You Can Dance,...

Before we get to this week’s dances, a necessary note: I am obsessed with guest-judge Paula Abdul and can’t help if my judgment last night was altered thanks to her presence. She’s Paula, y’all. Forever your girl in ’88, spellbinding you in ’91, and throttling you with sex appeal and bandleader jackets forever after. And get this, I also love this week’s other guest judge Erin Andrews — one of the underrated smart ladies of broadcasting. Hell yes to this unlikely duo of visitors. Cue up “Opposites Attract” and let these skat kats jam.

True confession time: I’m not much of a Broadway theater expert — unless you consider the fact that I recapped two seasons of Smash. (“Wait, that just makes you a masochist,” you say.)
But who can resist the charms of Neil Patrick Harris Hosting the 2013 Tony Awards? Certainly not me, especially when we’ll finally find out whether Bombshell or Hit List takes home the most statuettes. (I kid! I kid!)

So You Think You Can Dance‘s Boston audition stop was a cause for celebration — and not just because it featured a gal with a lampshade on her head, a hunk willing to flash his torso upon request and Mary Murphy hollerating like a Red Sox fan with the score tied at the bottom of the ninth.
No sirree, the two-hour episode turned into party central thanks to a deep and ridiculously diverse pool of talent — with ballroom, hip-hop, ballet and contemporary all on brilliant display. And while it was a near impossible task to narrow it down to the five best auditions,...

The Olympics are over, so that means it's time for an all-new, all-live performance/elimination double header of "So You Think You Can Dance"! Cat is wearing Heidi hair to celebrate! Even better, the entire show is dedicated to the work of one choreographer: Mia Michaels. Oh, and four people (two guys, two gals) are going home. Yay. Not. Our judges will be Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and guest judges ballet superstars Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt. Michael and Billy are top ballet dancers who have a show which is not going to be named on "Sytycd" (psst, it's "Chance to Dance" on Ovation, and it debuts on Friday) but is produced...

After a groan-inducing two-week hiatus, the glorious So You Think You Can Dance returns tonight for its Top 14 week. This season, the terpsichorean series lost its Thursday night results show, forcing major format changes that include 1) performances and eliminations within the same episode, 2) new "bottom three" rules, and 3) a finale that will crown two winners, one male and one female. And you know what? I think it's working out great so far. Here are the five biggest perks of the new system.
1. Cat Deeley works best under this pressure.
Why is Cat Deeley the greatest host on TV (besides, perhaps, RuPaul)? Because she has that natural Dick Clark-ian awareness of pacing, timing, humor, seriousness, and contestant sympathy. In the old format, Cat was responsible for introducing a myriad of guest performances and reading tons more teleprompter feed. Now, she's forced into exhibiting only her finest traits: helping along repartee between contestants and judges,...

Before I came to write about the great world of Bollywood, I was a professional ballet dancer for many years. It was my first love. So when I discovered Bollywood, the dance sequences were one of the things that made me fall in love with the genre. Since I am a dancer, one of my all time favorite shows is the reality dance program, So You Think You Can Dance (Sytycd) on Fox network here in the Us. You can imagine how excited I was when I first saw a Bollywood number on the show in Season 4. I was ecstatic and so it seems was the audience. Since then the Bollywood numbers have thrilled audiences and I hear will be seen on the 9th season, which is airing now on Wednesday nights. A couple of weeks ago I got the amazing opportunity to chat with the choreographer behind those great Bollywood numbers,...

'Glee' isn't the first TV show to feature the haunting breakup song.

Tuesday was a big day for breakout singer/songwriter Christina Perri. Not only was her long-awaited debut album Lovestrong finally released, but the song that made her an instant success, "Jar of Hearts," was featured on the latest episode of "Glee."
Of course, it's not the first time Perri's tune about letting go of a toxic relationship has been featured prominently on a television show. In fact, almost a year before Lea Michele gave "Jar of Hearts" a go during the prom-themed episode of "Glee" (named, appropriately enough, "Prom Queen"), Perri made a name for herself thanks to the reality competition series "So You Think You Can Dance."

In this first double elimination of this season's 'So You Think You Can Dance', self-trained B-boy Jose Ruiz and classically-schooled contemporary dancer Billy Bell were sent home.
Neither seemed particularly shocked: Ruiz told us he was proud of how far he'd gotten while Bell said he'd "gotten used to being in the bottom."
Bell also spoke about Nigel Lythgoe's "slightly androgynous style" comment that lit up Twitter the next day and whether he regretted his decision not to dance on an injured knee.
The two dancers gabbed about their favorite dances, what they've learned and what they're looking forward to on tour.

After escaping elimination during last week’s shocking results show, Jose Ruiz, 21, joined Billy Bell as the newly voted off Sytycd contestants. Jose called EW this morning to talk about his elimination, the judges’ critiques, and why he didn’t perform in those group numbers.
Entertainment Weekly: How are you feeling about last night?
Jose Ruiz: I feel great. I have no regrets. It’s just been an awesome journey and an awesome experience.
Why do you think the judges chose not eliminate anyone last week?
I just really thought that they saw that I was really elevating in my own style of dance.

So You Think You Can Dance's judges "went with America's voting," Adam Shankman told us after last night's show, in deciding to send home "brilliant" Billy Bell and the beloved but inexperienced Jose Ruiz. "America today basically voted Billy out," Adam added. "It makes me sad because he's so genius. The best dancer on this show has never won—ever. " Read on to hear more backstage scoop from the judges, Cat Deeley, Jose and (sniff) Billy... "It was a hard decision to make," Nigel Lythgoe told us, "[but] it wasn't a difficult decision. He’s been labeled a freakish dancer and an androgynous dancer, but the day after being eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance, Billy Bell, 20, seemed to simply be a satisfied dancer. Surprisingly chipper, the contemporary dancer called up EW to chat about his injury, Nigel’s criticism of his decision to sit out, and the routine he’s hoping to reprise on tour. (You’d be surprised!)
Entertainment Weekly: How are you feeling?
Billy Bell: Yeah. I think Jose and I both felt kind of — I guess “relieved” isn’t the best word. It wasn’t a sad experience.

Billy Bell was finally sent home on So You Think You Can Dance after being in the bottom three for five weeks in a row. That ends a journey that began last fall, when he dropped out for mysterious reasons that involved his possible death if he danced. Also eliminated by the judges was Jose Ruiz. Next week, the judges lose their power and viewers pick the final two, and then the winner. Meanwhile, Nigel...

Thursday night's (July 29) episode of "So You Think You Can Dance" was derailed a bit by the special guests, as the cast of "Step Up 3D" delivered a pretty killer performance and certainly legitimized that film as a can't miss. But it was also robbed of a bit of drama when they announced the bottom three. Everybody in the universe seemed to know that the time had come for Jose, who has consistently delivered underwhelming performances as the weeks have progressed (it sometimes appeared as though he was actually devolving as a dancer). And though Lauren might not have been entirely on point during Wednesday night's performance show (her Broadway routine was not as great as everybody seemed to think), you knew she wasn't going to be sent home simply because she's the only woman left standing. Plus, she's a much better dancer than Billy, and Lauren's survival dance was also far superior.

While it was refreshing to see a results show in which dancers who actually competed faced the music, this was predictable from the second the bottom three were announced.
Lauren Froderman in the bottom three? Really, America?
Speaking not just a straight guy, but as an objective observer, she's been one of the best all season. Possibly the only one who can defeat Kent. She's proficient and personable.
Of the three thus battling for the final spot in So You Think You Can Dance's coveted top four, there was simply no way Lauren could lose out to Jose Ruiz or Billy Bell. None.
Jose had been sneaking through for weeks, no doubt benefiting from injuries to other more talented stars. Billy? Perhaps he hurt his own cause by opting out of last week.
Even Jose Ruiz and Billy Bell seemed resigned to their fate.

The So You Think You Can Dance judges really should try not to give the eliminations away the night before they send two people home. But that's pretty much what they did, what with all the talk of mature-beyond-her-years Lauren Froderman and the endlessly affable Kent Boyd facing off in the finale. So what was there to do when little Lauren ended up in the bottom three for the first time alongside a fast-slipping favorite and the seeming scourge of Sytycd? Why, keep her, of course! Meaning Billy Bell, the best dancer to be shunned five consecutive weeks for no good reason (frilly pink cravats with red pants included), and Jose Ruiz, whose time has been coming, were let go. After last week's third consecutive injury debacle, no one was eliminated on So You Think You Can Dance. The two weeks prior to that, an injured dancer was eliminated. So we haven't seen anyone cut who's actually competed on the program since July 8.
They're making up for lost time now, however.
Two dancers will be ousted tomorrow night, leaving the season's final four standing. Let's take a look at how the remaining six did, and who's in jeopardy.
Kent Boyd with Anya Garnis (cha cha): Kent has come so far this season, Nigel Lythgoe said. When he goes for it, it just works. The clear favorite, Kent.
Robert Roldan with Kathryn McCormick (contemporary): In a piece about going off to war, Robert and Kathryn did a gorgeous job, showing serious talent.
Billy Boyd's knee was fine last night. His performances were as well.

After a string of injuries and last week's shocking revelation that nobody would be eliminated from the competition, Wednesday night's (July 28) episode of "So You Think You Can Dance" had all the potential to be a total letdown after weeks of unexpected drama. But in getting back to business as usual and focusing on the dancing, last night's batch of performances added up to one of the strongest single episodes in the show's history. It was a truly blow away tour de force that reminded everybody why people flock to this show in the first place.
Things got off to a great start with Kent and Anya, who knocked out a stellar cha cha that the judges were very enthusiastic about (despite the fact that Mia Michaels referred to Anya's performance as being too "crunchy," which was completely inexplicable to everybody — including a visibly confused Cat Deeley).

None of the bottom three dancers were kicked off this week on So You Think You Can Dance — but that means Two people will go home next week! Yikes!
After all the recent injuries shaking up the competition on So You Think You Can Dance this season, you’d think the show couldn’t get any stranger – but it did! Last night judges Nigel Lythgoe, Adam Shankman and Mia Michaels dropped an unprecedented bombshell: for the first time in the show’s five-year history, the bottom three dancers
were all saved from elimination!
Contemporary dancer Billy Bell, who chose to sit out this week due to a knee injury, was automatically placed in the bottom three. Robert Roldan and Jose Ruiz joined the frontrunner later to dance for their lives, and they both surely did. In fact, many people in the studio were on their feet after they performed their solos.

After two consecutive weeks of injury-related eliminations, the So You Think You Can Dance judges opted to send no one home, presumably saving Billy Bell, who was automatically in the bottom three by opting not to dance after being injured--even though doctors cleared him. "We just make this show up as we go along," Cat Deely astutely observed. How is she not nominated for an Emmy again?...

There have been many firsts on this season of "So You Think You Can Dance," and on Thursday night (July 22) we got another one. During the last five minutes of the show, Nigel Lythgoe announced that they were doing something they had never done before on the show: They wouldn't be sending anybody home this week.
With his injury, Billy was automatically put in the bottom three last night, and he was joined by Robert and Jose, both of whom danced for their life. But as the night went on and performances from the American Ballet Theatre, DJ Smart (a contestant from Vegas), All-Stars Lauren and Neil, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull unfolded, I started to believe that Billy was going to be sent home simply because the last two eliminations were also because of injuries.

They couldn't do it three straight weeks, right?
After Alex Wong and Ashley Galvan couldn't even perform the last two weeks, rendering the results show effectively moot, Billy Bell was in the same position last night.
Only he could have danced, yet opted not to.
Billy, who didn't perform with the top six Wednesday, was on the block with Robert Roldan and Jose Ruiz. Lauren Froderman, Kent Boyd and Adechike Torbert were safe.
Thursday, Billy sat in the audience and didn’t participate in the group dance routine, assuring us he was following in Alex and Ashley's injured footsteps and going home.
But that's not how it went down this time.
Billy Bell won a surprise reprieve last night.
When it came time to announce the results, Nigel announced that he, Adam and Mia "haven’t made up our minds, but we came to a conclusion." Cryptic and non-committal.

(S07E17) Did Billy Bell exit stage left because of his injury, or was another dancer who had underperformed sent home? Was Lauren's butt mentioned? Did Mia say something needed more "Tsssss?" Or did something totally unexpected -- even for chaotic season seven -- happen?
We'll answer those, and other questions, in typical 'So You Think You Can Dance' fashion, by making you wait (and wait and wait some more) until the very end, because what is reality TV without a lot of suspense and unnecessary padding?
Thursday night's elimination show featured a classical dance performance from the Grand Ballet Company as well as a revival of a great season three routine from All-Stars Neil and Lauren by choreographer Wade Robson.

America is going to get a chance to catch up with Billy Bell after all. The often-in-danger contemporary phenom did not become the latest So You Think You Can Dance casualty Thursday despite sitting out last night's performance show, thereby stopping the string of competition-ending injuries at two. It’s almost not shocking anymore. From week to week, we turn our televisions to Fox, prepared to take in another awesome episode of So You Think You Can Dance during this relatively solid season. It's starting to be a running joke on "So You Think You Can Dance." On Wednesday night (July 21), Nigel Lythgoe announced that for the third week in a row, another top dancer injured himself and will not be dancing. This time around, it was Billy Bell's turn.
My first thought was, "They have got to be kidding!" Nobody seems to know why this batch of contestants keeps falling apart, and Nigel stated that they'll be getting someone to come in and help with the warm-ups. Obviously the dancers aren't properly warming up, which is extremely vital when pushing the body the way they do. Should they also be taking dance classes alongside their rehearsals to maintain their strength and technique? And what about this season's format? Is it pushing the dancers too hard?
But it wasn't all injuries and confusion last night, as there was plenty of dancing.

So You Think You Can Go a Whole Week Without an Injury?!
It's getting ridiculous. For the third consecutive week, an injury meant the field was down a body. Are the dancers perhaps being pushed too hard? Is it bad luck and nothing more?
Will it mean yet another results show with zero tension tonight?
Maybe, maybe not on that last point. Nigel seemed to suggest that Billy Bell, who hurt his knee during rehearsals, should be able to bounce back by next week. Alex Wong and Ashley Galvan were not so fortunate the previous two weeks, though. Who knows.
The five contestants who actually performed did three dances last night, performing with an All-Star, with another contestant, and by themselves. Here's a rundown:
Contestants and All-Stars

Ashley Galvan's seemingly modest rib injury proved season-ending last night on So You Think You Can Dance, making for the second consecutive week we've said goodbye to a dancer who couldn't even perform or dance for their life - a major drag.
Unlike Alex Wong's exit last week after lacerating his Achilles, Ashley's "rib bruise" seemed innocuous enough to guarantee she'd be moving on to the final six.
Alas, the bruise was worse than expected, and she's now out, leaving Lauren Froderman as the lone female representative of the final six dancers this season.
"It sucks," Ashley said of her elimination, but "I do have something to look forward to, which is the tour. Going on the tour is such an amazing opportunity."

Sigh. One week after Alex Wong tore his Achilles tendon and was declared Dfy, not only costing So You Think You Can Dance a fan favorite but rendering that entire week's worth of performances more or less moot, Ashley Galvan was on the shelf with a rib injury.
