Stephen Colbert and Skybound Entertainment are developing an ongoing fantasy show based on Roger Zelazny’s novel series “The Chronicles of Amber.” The late-night host will be producing under his Spartina Banner, which has a first-look deal with CBS Studios.
He joins the existing partnership with Vincent Newman Entertainment and Skybound.
“The Chronicles of Amber” follows the story of Corwin, who awakens on Earth with no memory, but soon finds he is a prince of a royal family that has the ability to travel through different dimensions of reality (called “shadows”) and rules over the one true world, Amber. The story unfolds over 10 books with two definitive story arcs: “The Corwin Cycle” and “The Merlin Cycle.” The series has sold more than 15 million copies globally and has been credited as one of the main inspirations for “Game of Thrones.”

Twenty years after it first arrived to shake up a complacent Broadway and make a Pulitzer Prize winner of its author Suzan-Lori Parks, Topdog/Underdog has lost none of its vitality and power and cunning. Director Kenny Leon proves that in a vibrant new production opening tonight at the Golden Theatre.

Refresh for updates Hollywood and the Beltway were quick to respond to today’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe V. Wade.
Taylor Swift tweeted, “I’m absolutely terrified that this is where we are – that after so many decades of people fighting for women’s rights to their own bodies, today’s decision has stripped us of that.”
“They did it,” tweeted Bette Midler. “They Did It To US!”
“A woman’s right to choose is a Health decision,” wrote Yvette Nicole Brown.
Shonda Rhimes tweeted a simple, “This is actually happening.”

Just what is Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself? DelGaudio is an illusionist, but this is not your standard magic show. Instead, it looks like a deeply personal, emotionally affecting experience that leaves several audience members either speechless or in tears. DelGaudio’s one-man show was directed by Frank Oz, and now a filmed version of the […]

"You can see it for what it is... or you can imagine what it could be." Hulu has unveiled an official trailer for the acclaimed stage show doc film In & Of Itself, a taped presentation of Derek DelGaudio's famous show that first opened in NYC in 2016. DelGaudio's show is technically magic, and you could call him an illusionist, but he doesn't prefer these terms and he refuses to call In & Of Itself a magic show. Which is fine. It's a combination of storytelling and mystery and intrigue and magic all-in-one. This film premiered at a few film festivals last year, and launches on Hulu later this month. It is a taped version of the show, directed by Frank Oz, with a few clever editing tricks during audience interaction moments. And it is Astounding. This guy is the most innovative, creative magician working today and it's near impossible...

Derek DelGaudio aims to subvert expectations in his one-man show “In & Of Itself.”
He’s an illusionist, after all.
Yet in an exclusive first trailer of the live recording of his acclaimed stage show, which debuts on Hulu this month, even the audience appears unprepared for the magic that unfolds before their very eyes.
“You think this is a performance,” DelGaudio narrates in the video. “You see a man in a theater… there’s an audience. It’s difficult to see past what this looks like.”
He offers, “You can see it for what it is — or you can imagine what it could be.”
“In & Of Itself” ran Off Broadway for over a year before getting the movie treatment. Frank Oz directed the filmed version, which was recorded live in New York City. Oz previously staged the show during its Off-Broadway run and at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.

Though he’s adept enough at sleight-of-hand and other stage trickery to have earned the admiration of people like Ricky Jay, Penn & Teller and David Blaine, performer Derek DelGaudio bristles at the term “magician.” Anyone inclined to think that makes him pretentious can look to Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself, in which Frank Oz documents the singular 2017 off-Broadway show (also directed by Oz) that embodies his ideal: Here, the patter employed by some ambitious illusionists becomes full-blown storytelling, with sequences built around a unifying theme and a carefully considered approach to stage and sound design....

Four years ago, Doc NYC was the first major film festival after the election. It was an appropriate time for the country’s largest showcasing of non-fiction cinema, much of which speaks to some of the most pressing issues of our time. That’s true again this year, but the mood is likely to be quite different, and so is the experience as a whole. Like most of the festival circuit this year, Doc NYC is going virtual, which means that people across America can stream all 108 features and 92 shorts over the course of eight packed days.
The lineup encompasses a wide range of subjects, from activism to police brutality and the role of creativity to parse an increasingly complex world. Here are 11 highlights. Browse the full lineup and purchase tickets here. Doc NYC runs November 11-19.

It’s a tough act for a critic to try and explain the joys and pleasures of Derek DelGaudio’s In & of Itself. In short, it’s an evocative exploration of narrative and identity through magic and trickery, starting with a thesis statement: we are all our own unreliable narrators. While this premise could also be a trigger warning at the beginning of Rashômon, Shutter Island, and a few Fincher films, In & of Itself takes a fascinating turn, steeped in the kind of narrative that’s required at the heart of every magic show. Objects are given meaning, including a gold brick that appears on stage and around the city of New York, symbolizing a brick thrown into the window of his childhood home after his mom came out.

Hulu has landed rights to “Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself,” the movie version of illusionist’s one-man stage show that ran Off-Broadway.
The Frank Oz-directed film will debut on Hulu on Jan. 22, 2021.
“In & Of Itself” was filmed live in an intimate New York City theater. The show, exploring themes of identity and illusion, is intentionally described in a vague nature. Oz maintains that audiences need to watch the film to understand.
“One of the things I love about ‘In & Of Itself’ is that it can’t be explained. It has to be seen. And now it can be — on Hulu,” Oz said. “And I can’t wait to hear people’s reaction to it.”
In a review for IndieWire, critic Eric Kohn called the 90-minute feature a mix of “stage trickery and alluring autobiographical asides.” He wrote, “DelGaudio transforms the usual shock-and-awe routine into a powerful meditation on...

When Philip Roth published “The Plot Against America” in 2004, his revisionist historical fiction in which Germany wins WWII and America elects a fascist who runs on xenophobia was an intriguing — if unsettling — thought experiment. In 2020, the bestselling novel has become an eerily prescient allegory. It’s no wonder that after the election of Donald Trump, HBO approached “The Wire” creator David Simon to adapt the novel. The resulting six-episode miniseries begins Monday night with a delicately rendered, if somewhat muted, opening episode.
Painted in the sepia tones of the past, “The Plot Against America” is far too close to an increasingly frightening present. Whether that ends up being too close for comfort or just distant enough to be a wake-up call (for anyone who still needs one) remains to be seen. The question lingering after the promising premiere, however, is whether now is in fact “the right time” for an...

Leaving China for the first time in her short life, 26-year-old Zhang Yingying arrived at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in April 2017; she was there to conduct research on photosynthesis and crop productivity, and perhaps later enroll in the doctoral program before returning home to marry her lovely boyfriend Hou Xiaolin and run her own ecology team. “Life is too short to be ordinary,” she wrote in her diary, which was filled with self-affirmation but punctuated with stabs of homesickness and culture shock. Shortly after Yingying disappeared on June 9 of that same year, Jiayan “Jenny” Shi — a former classmate of Yingying’s in Nanping — began making a documentary about the Zhang family’s search for their missing daughter, which continued long after it was safe to assume the girl was dead.

Exclusive: This week was supposed to be a great and promising one for all the filmmakers who had seen their films accepted into SXSW, a great majority seeking distribution after premiering in front of the usually highly enthusiastic audiences that storm the Austin festival every March. That was before the fear of the coronavirus hit, and late last week SXSW was forced to cancel on orders from the city. That left a lot of ambitious plans in ruins, and only now are some of these films finding new ways to gain attention.

Critics and audiences are sworn to secrecy – well, requested politely but firmly to do so – by the masterful British magician at the start of his bewildering, beguiling Broadway debut Derren Brown: Secret, opening tonight at the Cort Theatre. So no spoiler alerts needed here – even to describe what goes on, much less reveal the outcomes, would be to ruin the show for anyone who intends to see it on Broadway or whatever no-brainer filmed special spins from it.
So descriptors, all accurate, will have to suffice. Stunning. Captivating. Thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. Etc. Even his previous Netflix specials can’t quite capture the dizzying buzz of watching him do what he does in person.
