Something nice happened to us while we were preparing the schedule for Ebertfest 2012, which plays April 25-29 at the Virginia Theater (above) in Champaign-Urbana, Ill. We'd invited Patton Oswalt to attend with his "Big Fan. He agreed and went one additional step: "I'd like to personally choose a film to show to the students, and discuss it." That sounded to me like a splendid idea, embodying the spirit of this festival, which combines the love of good films with volunteerism. This is a rare festival where no business takes place. No films are bought or sold. No deals are signed. It's simplicity itself: We join in a classic 1920 palace, 1,600 of us, and watch a film as it should be seen, on a vast screen with perfect sound. Then we talk about them afterwards. The festival and the theater come to us through the work of countless volunteers from the University and the community of Champaign-Urbana.

Robert Duvall makes his screen debut (sans dialogue) as the enigmatic Boo Radley. DVD and Blu-ray double edition. Chicago – Vera Farmiga’s “Higher Ground” is a unique choice for a modern actress to make for her directorial debut. It feels so inspired by the ensemble-driven dramas of the ’70s and ’80s that future generations could nearly mistake it for one. It’s also a film that tackles something that terrifies so many screenwriters — faith, religion, spirituality, and their place in the world. The final result can be a bit disjointed (as films based on memoirs often are) but this is an often-daring film that tackles rarely-dramatized issues. For that reason, it’s well-worth seeing.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
It’s also more dramatically accomplished than it may have been given credit for in its theatrical release. Farmiga has a strong eye for composition and paces her piece well. She may have been smart to get more involved in the writing process and could have edited a bit more tightly, but...

Vera Farmiga gives herself over to a radical church in Higher Ground.
The drama film Higher Ground, directed by and starring the talented Vera Farmiga (Source Code) is based on the memoir This Dark World by Carolyn S. Briggs.
(Unofficially, the movie also shares the same name as my favorite Stevie Wonder song.)
Pregnant, married and awkward at 18 years old, Corrine Miller (played as a teen by Taissa Farmiga and as an older woman by Vera) grows more and more interested in Jesus, eventually giving herself over to a radical New Testament church. Amidst her community of self-described “Jesus Freaks,” Corrine’s daily life consists of hours of Bible study, alternative family practices and bracing for the oncoming Rapture. It’s only when her marriage begins to unravel that Corrine dares to question the religious dogma she has embraced for her entire life.

CW, Kathleen, Corinne and Wendy are the typical family, maybe even better; they’re goofy with each other, mom & dad are still sexy crazy for each other, with a closeness that you just don’t see every day. Then tragedy strikes, and the shockwaves send young Corinne to a wild life, and then to salvation with a capital S. But who’s salvation has she found, and how does one keep a hold of his or her faith in an oppressive society? Higher Ground takes a look at fundamentalist Christianity and it’s growing pains, paralleling the changes in that belief system with the changes the Baby Boom generation went through. It’s a powerful film that has at it’s center a strong willed woman of deep faith, a unicorn in today’s overbearing, male-centered church. That Higher Ground manages to simultaneously convey Corinne’s deep respect and love...

Higher Ground, Oscar-nominated Actress Vera Farmiga.s (Up In The Air) directing debut, is a moving drama about one woman.s religious faith. It.s based on the memoir This Dark World by Carolyn S. Briggs (who co-wrote the screenplay with Tim Metcalfe) and does something rarely seen in movies today; it treats Christianity in a frank and respectful way without judging or ridiculing those whose lives revolve around it. Higher Ground is a well-made, well-written, and superbly acted film that approaches its subject with intelligence and sensitivity. However one may feel about the fundamentalist brand of spirituality, or about religion in general, this film will make you feel the Power of the Lord over Man !! (or in this case, Woman) .....or maybe not. At the very least it presents, in Ms Farmiga, an exciting new filmmaking talent.

Unfamiliar with This Dark World, the 2002 memoir by Carolyn S. Briggs, upon which this film is based, I approached this assignment with a number of preconceptions and yes, even prejudices. It’s difficult not to react in this way to a film that takes on religion and faith and spirituality because these are such personal matters. Beyond this, Higher Ground would also be an important film about big ideas, as well as the...

Chicago – The subject of religion in America is rarely portrayed honestly in the movies, with its power to both inspire or offend. Vera Farmiga makes her directorial debut and plays the lead character in the religious-themed “Higher Ground.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Points are immediately given to Ms. Farmiga for taking on the story, based on a memoir by Carolyn Briggs. No matter what you feel about organized religion, whether a church goer or secularist, Higher Ground is a thought provoking message film, and relevant to today. The story is uneven, but the sincerity of Farmiga’s direction is in every frame.
Farmiga plays Corinne, a woman who is shown at the beginning of the film being baptized in a river. She is a new convert to a small Evangelical Christian church and her path to that moment is shown in flashbacks from her 1960s childhood to the present, around the 1980s. Her...

Chicago – As an actress, Vera Farmiga broke out big in 2009 with her Oscar nominated performance in “Up in the Air.” Farmiga is now taking a total filmmaker’s role, playing the lead character and directing the new film, “Higher Ground.”
Farmiga began her career in the late 1990s, scoring a featured role in the TV series “Roar.” After working some supporting parts in TV and film, including HBO’s “Iron Jawed Angels” and “Touching Evil” (both 2004), she began to appear in more prominent feature films like “The Manchurian Candidate” (2004), “The Departed” (2006) and “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” (2008). More attention came in 2009 opposite George Clooney with her Oscar nominated role in “Up in the Air.”

Actress Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air”) makes a heavenly debut as a director with “Higher Ground,” a compelling drama about a woman’s spiritual journey. Farmiga has done that rare thing: make a movie about religion that is neither condescending, preachy nor satirical but rather looks at an evangelical Christian community with an open and a (mostly) nonjudgmental eye. “Higher Ground” is based on “Dark Journey: A Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost,” a 2002 autobiographical book by Carolyn S. Vera Farmiga did not intend to become a director. But when she read Carolyn Briggs’ memoir, “This Dark World," she was determined to bring the story of one evangelical woman's lifelong struggle with her faith to the big screen.
We sat down with Farmiga to talk about directing and starring in "Higher Ground," the film based on Brigg's memoir. Farmiga, who last appeared in the sci-fi thriller "Source Code," is perhaps best known for her Oscar-nominated portrayal of George Clooney’s career-minded love interest in "Up in the Air."
Though she won’t go into details about her own religious beliefs, Farmiga claims that "Higher Ground" is itself an intimate exploration of her personal faith. Creating the film became a way for Farmiga to look for answers to big questions about faith, spirituality and devotion, which, as she says, are “hard questions.”

Vera Farmiga / Molly Hawkey, courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics Vera Farmiga is best known to mainstream audiences for her turns in Martin Scorsese's The Departed and Jason Reitman's Up in the Air, with the latter earning her an Oscar® nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2010. But by that point, she had been working steadily for over a decade, garnering critical acclaim in films such as Down to the Bone and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Now Farmiga is stepping out in a new role: as both director and lead actress in the spiritual drama Higher Ground (Tff 2011), which also stars Joshua Leonard (Humpday, The Blair Witch Project), John Hawkes (Winter's Bone, Deadwood), and Farmiga's younger sister Taissa Farmiga, making her feature film debut as the adolescent version of the lead. Vera Farmiga's Higher Ground premiered at Sundance last January to strong reviews. While Variety called it "a startlingly bold directing debut," as THR put it, "no one should really be surprised that Vera Farmiga brings the same meticulous craftsmanship and passion for truth found in her extraordinary acting to her debut as a director." One surprise: Farmiga directed the film, which Sony Pictures Classics will release August 26, while pregnant. Also unusual: the character she portrays, Corinne (based on Carolyn S. Briggs, whose 2003 memoir, This Dark World: A Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost, inspired the film) is played by both Farmiga and her younger sister, 16-year old Taissa (in a breakout performance). Their resemblance is striking: both have the natural ability to command ...

Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga ("Up in the Air") has always shown a fearlessness in front of the camera -- and if the new trailer for her directorial debut "Higher Ground" is any indication, she's taken that mindset to a whole new level behind the camera as well.
Based on the real life experience of memoirist Carolyn Briggs, "Higher Ground" tells the story of a woman in the 60's who struggles to find her place in the world of men -- but more importantly in the world of God.
A movie about religion, spirituality and speaking in tongues? Clearly, Farmiga is not risk-averse.
Whether or not film audiences are ready to go see a movie about such hot button topics remains to be seen, but there's no questioning either Farmiga's artistic integrity or the line-up of great actors she's called upon to fill out "Higher Ground;" besides Farmiga, "Higher Ground...

We just had the first poster for Farmiga‘s directorial debut Higher Ground, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival this year, and now the trailer has arrived.
I’ve heard divisive reactions since but it was one of my favorites at the festival, packed with wit, laughs, and strong performances led by Farmiga herself. Telling the life story of a woman and her spiritual struggles, the concept may seem dry, this new director is able to keep the pace moving, while still building to a heavy emotional payoff, up to the final shot.
Sony Pictures Classics will be releasing the film next month starring Joshua Leonard, John Hawkes, Dagmara Dominszyk, Donna Murphy, Bill Irwin, Norbert Leo Butz and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Despite a somewhat lukewarm response from its premiere at Sundance, the directorial debut of Vera Farmiga--an adaptation of Carolyn Briggs' religious memoirs "This Dark World: A Memoir Of Salvation Lost And Found"--is a film we're greatly looking forward to. Despite the crazy mount of sales that took place, this pikc-up acts as a reminder that not all Sundance Film Festival titles were picked up before Day 11. One such title, the U.S Dramatic Competition selected Higher Ground has found a home with adult cinephile audience specialist Sony Pictures Classics -- a great fit for a film that I think many would agree was inoffensive, but far from tone-deaf as Vera Farmiga managed to give this decades-spanning tale an authentic charm that challenges notions of faith and religion in a manner that is far from Hallmark Card-ish. Gist: Inspired by the resonant memoir written by Carolyn Briggs (who also co-wrote the screenplay), This Dark World: A Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost, the film is a study of one woman’s internal struggle with the primary love relationships in her life. As a contemplative child, Corrine (Farmiga) longs for...

After her exemplary performances in Down to the Bone, The Departed and Up in the Air, we all knew that Vera Farmiga was a talented actress. But with Higher Ground, she proves she’s an excellent director as well. Farmiga directed and stars in the story of one woman’s battle with faith from the 1950s through 1990s. Spanning several eras and featuring excellent supporting performances by John Hawkes, Joshua Leonard and others, Farmiga maintains great narrative propulsion by combining humor and debates about faith with a simple story and round characters. One of the few flaws in Higher Ground is that, as it begins, it’s a little unclear as to the point of the story. We meet Corinne (Farmiga) as a young 20-year-old then quickly jump back to her childhood. From there the film speeds through her teen years, marriage and beyond. Finally we realize the connective tissue...

Higher Ground deals with some big, and often controversial, questions regarding religions and one’s sense of community, one’s sense of self and their place in the world. In her directorial debut, Vera Farmiga plays Corinne, a woman searching for meaning and direction in her life, and we explore her struggle as she tries to do so within the constraints of her community’s fundamentalist church.

Vera Farmiga's directorial debut, Higher Ground, does something seldom, if ever, done in a film: It takes a non-judgemental approach to born-again Christianity, and explores with actual honesty and sincerity one woman's lifelong relationship with her faith and identity. It doesn't skewer religion; it doesn't depict fundamentalism unfavorably; it doesn't proselytize, mock, or advocate. The movie would be original for that alone, but Farmiga's elegant and honest depiction of these characters transcends Higher Ground beyond a religious movie. It's a superb character film, one that just happens to focus on a character who believes verily in God. It doesn't hurt, either, that in her directorial debut, Farmiga has the benefit of one of the best actresses around in Herself, and Farmiga coaxes one hell of an outstanding performance out of her.

Following her Oscar-nominated turn in Jason Reitman's "Up In The Air" alongside George Clooney and Anna Kendrick, Vera Farmiga took up a supporting role in Duncan Jones' sci-fi thriller "Source Code" before deciding to try her hand at directing with an adaptation of Carolyn Briggs' religious memoir "This Dark World: A Memoir Of Salvation Lost And Found." As it's a starring vehicle and her debut behind the camera, Farmiga intelligently surrounded herself with an experienced, talented cast which includes fellow indie-world vet Joshua Leonard ("Humpday"), Sundance specialist John Hawkes ("Winter's Bone"), Dagmara Dominczyk ("Kinsey"), television staples Donna Murphy and Ebon…...

#16. Higher Ground - Vera Farmiga Last year, Sundance welcomed Mark Ruffalo and Philip Seymour Hoffman's directorial debuts for a world premiere launch (Sympathy for Delicious and Jack Goes Boating respectively), seems fitting they'll do the same for an actress whose career got a major jump start at the fest with her brilliant perf in Down to the Bone. Shot this summer, it would be a "miracle" if Vera Farmiga's debut, an adaption of Carolyn Briggs' memoir This Dark World is somehow completed: juggling two new babies one called Higher Ground, the other one in a literal sense of the word. Scripted by Briggs and Tim Metcalfe, featuring Farmiga, Donna Murphy, John Hawkes, Dagmara Dominczyk and Joshua Leonard, and lensed by Debra Granik's Dp Michael McDonough, this follows outsider Corinne Walkers’ (Farmiga) journey from childhood to motherhood. Growing up, Corinne faces many challenges. A traumatic loss is...

Pregnant actress Vera Farmiga refused to stop working on her directorial debut Higher Ground over the summer - but admits she found it "tough" spending long days on set while expecting.
The Up In The Air star and husband Renn Hawkey are set to welcome their second child next month, but rather than take time off, Farmiga carried on with her punishing schedule.
She has been busy directing and starring in Higher Ground, an adaption of born-again Christian Carolyn Briggs' memoir, This Dark World: A Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost - and Farmiga is pleased she carried on with the project.
She says, "I've been working on it for the whole summer in my second trimester of pregnancy which was tough.
"I directed it and starred in it simultaneously. It was a super-low budget film which traces a little girl through childhood, teenage pregnancy and adulthood in search for 'higher ground'. It was wild to be on the other side of the camera!"...

Vera Farmiga has signed on to Daniel Calparsoro’s revenge indie Western A Thousand Guns, the movie that’s going to be directed by Spanish director Calparsoro and is written by Russell Friedenberg.
Farmiga seems to be very busy nowadays, since we all had a chance to hear she’s preparing her directorial debut with the adaptation of This Dark World, based on the memoir by Carolyn Briggs. Good for her!
But let’s get back to A Thousand Guns! Not much is known of the plot except that “centers on a preacher’s wife and her journey of revenge” and that the story is actually about a young mother who begins to question the “religious dogma” that she has embraced all of her life.
So, as you see, our lovely Farmiga will play a missionary turned powerful gunslinger in this rogue western that’s set “in a world where...

Vera Farmiga has proven herself to be an excellent actress, but can the lady direct as well? Coming off of her Up In The Air fame, Farmiga is now aiming to start work on an Indie film entitled Higher Ground. She will both star in and direct the flick, testing her versatility in all aspects of cinema.
Higher Ground is based on the memoir This Dark World: A Tale Of Salvation Found And Lost, which chronicles one woman's story of finding, then losing, deep faith. Written by Carolyn Brigg, the book's synopsis is as follows:
Carolyn Briggs grew up with modest means in the Iowa heartland. Pregnant at seventeen, married a few months later, by the age of eighteen she found herself living in a trailer with no plans beyond having more babies-until she found Jesus. It began innocently enough-a few minutes lingering on the televangelist stations, a cursory...

Interesting tidbit of news today. Production Weekly reports (via IONCinema) that Oscar nominated actress Vera Farmiga will step behind the camera for her directorial debut on a film called Higher Ground. The project is an adaptation of Carolyn Briggs' memoir This Dark World, which is a look at the nature of faith and a story of one woman's struggle to find her place in the world. Before you shrug this off as another religious film, the story is actually about a young mother who begins to question the "religious dogma" that she has embraced all of her life - another anti-faith film to join with Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master. Farmiga will start shooting this in upstate New York in June after she finishes Duncan Jones' Source Code. She will also star in the film (not sure what role?) in addition to directing it, however it doesn't...
