The Slamdance Film Festival announced today their narrative and documentary feature film competition for its 24th Festival edition, taking place January 19-25, 2018 in Park City. Established in 1995 by a group of filmmakers whose work had been rejected by the Sundance Film Festival, Slamdance is dedicated to fostering a community for independent emerging artists, fashioning itself “the premiere film festival by filmmakers, for filmmakers.”
The feature competition includes 16 premieres, mostly produced in the U.S. All competition films are feature length directorial debuts with budgets of less than $1 million Usd, and without Us distribution. In addition, the festival announced a new partnership with alumni Anthony and Joe Russo (“Captain America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Infinity War”) to establish the inaugural Russo Fellowship award. Every participating filmmaker will be eligible for a $25,000 cash prize and mentorship from the Russos in the development of the winner’s next project at the brothers’ Los Angeles studio.

A creator with a long history on YouTube has returned to the world’s top video site. Kassem G (real name Kassem Gharaibeh), who gathered millions of subscribers and 439 million views on his personal channel thanks to web series like California On and Going Deep, has posted his first new video in seven months: a 52-minute live show set in a yard behind an old trailer.
The untitled show is a collaboration between Gharaibeh and the comedy network Jash. In its first (and thus far only) episode, Gharaibeh is joined by his brother Omar and his buddy Peter Gilroy. Together, they hang out, get high, answer questions from social media, and chat with guests like Amy Pham.
The new video is only the 11th one Gharaibeh has posted to his channel since July 2014, and fans have all sorts of theories to explain why he has returned. “Guess you’ve burnt through the Disney money,...

In the original version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is a bitter miser who hates Christmas. Let’s be real, though: Cranky old men are sooooo 1843. If one were to remake A Christmas Carol, it would make more sense for the protagonist to be an Internet commenter with a hateful streak. That’s exactly the idea behind “A Troll Carol”, a new holiday special produced by Maker Studios as part of the web series Casual Sketch.
A Troll Carol’s take on Scrooge is a lonely, goateed hater portrayed Mike McNeal. As he settles down for another night of flaming people in comment sections, he is haunted by an infamous troll named Jake Marley (Peter Gilroy). Marley presents Scrooge with the Internet trolls of past, present, and future, inviting him to see the errors of his ways.

Zombeavers (2014)
Written by: Al Kaplan, Jon Kaplan, Jordan Rubin
Directed by: Jordan Rubin
Cast: Rachel Melvin (Mary), Cortney Palm (Zoe), Lexi Atkins (Jenn), Hutch Dano (Sam), Jake Weary (Tommy), Peter Gilroy (Buck), Rex Linn (Smyth), Brent Briscoe (Winston), Phyllis Katz (Myrne), Bill Burr (Joseph), John Mayer (Luke), Robert R. Shafer (Trucker)
It’s so hard to tell nowadays what kind of film you are going to get by just looking at the solitary picture and the synopsis. I seldom ever rely on the number of stars that it has, because someone else’s trash just might be my treasure. Back in the video store days, there were absolutely no guarantees even by looking at the videocassette box, but I guess that I just had a false sense of security that I could make a more informed choice. I’m slowly letting go, and just going with straight up intuition.

To prematurely write off Zombeavers would be an easy task based on the numerous trailers featuring zombified beaver puppets who growl angrily at the camera, as the footage suggests a watch that takes B-Movie stupidity to realms yet unexplored. Who needs a bunch of undead beavers thwapping their tails against the ground while they’re trying to gnaw through a group of drunken fratheads and their sorority babes? Pointless nudity, radiated beaver dams, filthy double entendres, goofy creature work – do horror fans really need to be subjected to such an untamed zombie/animal hybrid?!
Yeah – you’re f#cking right they do!
The same could have been said for movies like Gremlins, Child’s Play, or any other heavily puppeteered genre exploration that requires heavy special effects techniques and loads of imagination. Sure, we already know how those two famous examples turned out. Gremlins is a classic monster mash for...

Note to self: Never go to a remote cabin.
Prepare yourself for plenty of hilarious gore and beaver puns.

It’s difficult enough to survive an onslaught of living dead humans, but perhaps even trickier is going up against a batch of furtive beavers after they’ve been exposed to toxic waste that turns them into flesh eating animals. In Jordan Rubin’s horror-comedy Zombeavers, three women and their friends strive to survive these carnivorous creatures, and we now know when Us audiences can see these living dead lake dwellers.
Variety recently reported that Zombeavers was acquired by Freestyle Releasing and Freestyle Digital Media at the American Film Market. Zombeavers will be unleashed in theaters and VOD on March 20th.

Horror comedy Zombeavers (review) recently had its UK debut at Film4 FrightFest, but it hit Tribeca last spring for its world premiere, where we had a chance to chat with director and co-writer Jordan Rubin plus several members of the cast.
Stars Peter Gilroy, Rex Linn, Courtney Palm, Jake Weary, Rachel Melvin, and Lexi Atkins emerged from the Zombeavers onslaught to discuss acting in horror movies vs. watching them, the treasures to be found while peeing in the woods, and the ghostly presence of poor Old Yeller.
Additionally, Rubin (pictured above), a veteran of television comedy, joined in to talk about the technical considerations one must take into account when choosing between practical puppet zombeavers vs. CGI zombeavers.
Beware: A few spoilers for some classic movies that should be beyond spoiling by now are lurking in the below video, but there are no spoilers for Zombeavers itself.

Seriously. Do I have to lay out the plot of a film called Zombeavers? It features zombie beavers. What else do you need to know? Oh well, here goes: Three college friends decide to spend the weekend at a riverside cabin in the woods, man free, after one of the trio splits up with her boyfriend. However the boys see things differently and invite themselves on the trip in the hopes of having a debauched weekend filled with sex and booze. Little do the group know, they are right next door to a lodge of beavers who have been mutated, by an accidental toxic waste spill, into rabid zombeavers.
See, did I really need to explain that? Kids go woods. Kids get dead.

Director: Jordan Rubin; Screenwriter: Jordan Rubin, Jon Kaplan, Al Kaplan; Starring: Cortney Palm, Rachel Melvin, Hutch Dano, Jake Weary, Lexi Atkins, Peter Gilroy Running time: 85 mins
This is a movie about zombie beavers, and beaver zombies. What more, exactly, do you need to know? With Zombeavers, director Jordan Rubin and writers Al and Jon Kaplan have made an irreverent, low-budget spectacle in the tradition of horror comedies like Sharknado and Piranha 3D. The film features a mostly unknown cast, with a brief but funny cameo from a mustachioed John Mayer and leadwork from Cortney Palm, perhaps best known for her role in 2012's Sushi Girl.
Rubin and co use the the typical cabin in the woods model to set up their story - pragmatic Mary (Rachel Melvin), sex-crazed and potty mouthed Zoe (Palm), and a post-breakup depressed Jenn (Lexi Atkins) decide to go on a girls weekend in a country house by the lake.

Zombeavers. It’s all in the title. And given that such a title excites us here at Dread Central (but not in a necrophilia-bestiality kind of way, we promise), we figured it was high time to sit down with director Jordan Rubin to get the skinny on his upcoming horror-comedy feature.

It revolves around three college girls who go on a carefree vacation of drinking games, topless sunbathing, and sexual exploration, only to find that their frolicking fun comes to an abrupt end when toxic zombie beavers try to eat them.

The European Film Market will be showing hundreds of films this year, throughout the month of February. One of the horror titles in appearance is the hilariously titled Zombeavers. This film crosses a plague with these vicious aquatic mammals. From the producers of American Pie and Red Eye (Chris Bender, J.C. Spink), a trailer is available for Zombeavers. The clip shows the usual college kids on a quiet retreat. However, something very unusual is waiting for them in the waters - Zombeavers! Drinking games and skinny dipping is replaced with terror and bloodshed. Watch at your own peril (and try not to laugh). Epic Pictures is handling sales for the film. And, distribution is sure to be found soon as Zombeavers blends comedy and horror in an effective manner. Release Date: Tba. Director: Jordan Rubin. Cast: Bill Burr, Cortney Palm, Hutch Dano, Jake Weary, Lexi Atkins, Peter Gilroy and Rachel Melvin.
