Each week I find myself writing about how much I hate performance-driven music videos but present you with an exception. I think it’s time to admit defeat and realise that there is actually a large population of artists and music video directors who can get creative and pull them off. Although I feel a little foolish for having this initial hatred for them I am also thrilled to see a number of videos surprising me each week as well as what feels like a sudden influx of them. It’s great to see that all hope hasn’t been lost just yet. I can’t believe I even included a video which features both Jessie J and Nicki Minaj (I have nothing against Ariana Grande, yet). There’s just something really empowering about watching an all female ensemble come together and celebrate different kinds of femininity and female sexuality simultaneously.

James Mercer and Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton), collectively known at Broken Bells, definitely believe that we are not alone. In the video for “Control,” the two perform before footage of space travel, crop circles, images of the earth from space, UFOs, and other signs that there is life out there far beyond our own life on Earth. The combination of real news footage and the footage of the same pink orb that has appeared in every video for tunes from “After The Disco” creates the a cool, interplanetary vibe that fits the spacey “Control” perfectly as Mercer sings about not being in control. The duo resumes its current tour Sept. 26. The video is below the tour dates. 09/26/14 - New York, NY - Rumsey Playfield 09/27/14 - Philadelphia, Pa - Electric Factory 09/28/14 - Richmond, Va - The National 09/29/14 - Nashville, Tn - Ryman Auditorium 10/01/14 - Athens, Ga - Georgia Theatre 10/02/14 - Birmingham,...

Even if the movies themselves are nothing special, Ya adaptations always seem to have the best soundtracks. The best part of every Twilight film was looking at the accompanying albums to uncover some real gems (artists included The Black Keys, Broken Bells, Muse, The Bravery, Sia and St. Vincent, to name a few of many), while the Divergent soundtrack offered some great Ellie Goulding tracks.
The Hunger Games franchise, too, has been pretty stellar in terms of its musical stylings to date. The first film featured a rocking Kid Cudi song called “The Ruler and the Killer” in addition to some Arcade Fire and Taylor Swift, while Catching Fire incorporated Coldplay and The National for a more epic feel. Now, we’re hearing that the featured artist on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack will be none other than “Royals” breakout Lorde.

The Shins have a great tune "So Says I," but now it's time for a hazy "So Now What." The indie rockers -- who have been curbed more recently as James Mercer has pursued other musics with Danger Mouse in their project Broken Bells -- contributed the new tune to Zach Braff's "Wish I Were Here" film, which went the crowd-funding route last year. As you'll remember, Natalie Portman famously put headphones on Braff's head to the tune of The Shins "New Slang" in the former "Scrubs" star's directorial debut "Garden State" (2004). "It'll change your life, I swear," her character Sam says. Well, it certainly did change the band life of The Shins. So the circle of life continues. "Wish I Was Here" also has new songs from the likes of Bon Iver, Coldplay and Cat Power, plus previously released songs from The Head and the Heart and Hozier.

Washington, Apr.13: American Indie rock band called Broken Bells has said that they would be donating one dollar from every ticket of their gig to help protect Earth from asteroids.
The band has reportedly collaborated with the B612 Foundation - a non-profit organization dedicated for this exact purpose.
Fans who will buy the tickets to the after party can also expect to see foundation notables like Dr. Marc Buie, who is the mission specialist on the Sentinel project, and Rusty Schweickart, Apollo 9 astronaut and a co-founder of B612, the Verge reported.
The donation made by the band is an attempt to spread awareness and funding for the deep space telescope that the non-profit organization is planning to launch.

Outkast reunited onstage after a near decadelong hiatus with a jam-packed set at the Coachella music festival, their first of many performances planned this year. The rap duo headlined the first night of the music festival Friday in Indio, Calif., performing well-known hits such as "Hey Ya!," ''Ms. Jackson," ''The Way You Move," ''Elevators (Me & You)," and "So Fresh, So Clean." The Grammy winners performed two dozen tracks — seen via its livestream on YouTube — as they celebrated 20 years in music since the release of their 1994 debut, "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik." "Hey Coachella, are y'all alive?" Andre 3000 asked the crowd at the top of their set. "Are y'all alive? Are y'all alive?" "I really appreciate y'all coming out," he said at the end of the performance, more than 90 minutes later. "I know it's kind of weird 20 years later." Outkast worked the stage as they performed their rap anthems, and at times, they performed around...

Broken Bells’ lyric video for the stark “Leave It Alone” is an appropriately bleak clip with a coldness that matches the downer lyrics. The video features Broken Bells’ "signature pink aesthetic," according to a press release, in a geometric form that morphs from shapes into human parts as it moves through an isolated landscape. If you haven’t noticed the pink motif before, don’t feel bad. Here it is again in the minimalist video for the audio for the new album’s title track, “After the Disco,” and the “pseudo video” for first single, “Holding On For Life.” It all ties in with the...

On the excellent “After the Disco,” Broken Bells —aka Danger Mouse and The Shins’ James Mercer — wonder how we got here. Not physically, but metaphysically. Song after song on the synth pop-driven set asks hard questions for which there are no answers. More consistent than their self-titled 2010 debut, the atmospheric “After the Disco’s” often uplifting synth lines smooth the path for the alienation and loneliness of Mercer’s lyrics. It’s a tough album to listen to at times because there’s nothing but cold comfort, and not much of that, as Mercer touches again and again on the distance between the...

Given his overstuffed and eclectic list of projects – which includes Gorillaz, Gnarls Barkely, Beck, The Black Keys, Norah Jones, and U2 – it's hard to imagine that Danger Mouse has time to prioritize his favorite collaborators, much less choose them. But the songwriter and producer who catapulted mash-ups into the popular consciousness with "The Grey Album," his blend of Jay-z's "Black Album" and The Beatles' "White Album," confesses that Broken Bells, his ongoing partnership with Shins front man James Mercer, ranks high on that extraordinary list. "I’d been waiting a long time to do the second album," Danger Mouse, whose real name is Brian Burton, told Indiewire about "After the Disco," Broken Bells' sophomore release. "It's like my main gig, so I was kind of waiting to put myself creatively all of the way into it." And now that ambition has attracted film talent as well. Burton and Mercer...

The long-form music video/short film for Broken Bells' "After the Disco" wielded a lot of star power, including fun sci-fi work from Jacob Gentry, Kate Mara in a pink uniform and the gifted melancholy of Anton Yelchin. I had the chance to catch up with Yelchin as the two-part project premiered, to talk about the space-bound video plus a few other projects he's on, including the next "Star Trek," the possibility of another round of "Terminator," his starring roe in Joe Dante's "Burying the Ex" and making music in his spare time. Anton Yelchin and Kate Mara star in a series of great-looking sci-fi shorts called "After the Disco." The films serve as a music video for the band Broken Bells, which consists of Danger Mouse and The Shins' James Mercer.
The films follow a trippy romance that unfolds between Mara and Yelchin. They are swept away into a futuristic landscape, spaceship, and disco. They were directed by Jacob Gentry, who says in an interview with The Verge that the short is based on a story written by Danger Mouse and inspired by sci-fi imagery that Mercer sent him.
"James Mercer was sending me images of Barbarella and Logan’s Run, that sort of late ‘60s/early ‘70s science fiction. The same way we mixed all those visual styles is the same way Broken Bells mixed all the musical styles from every era to make something unique. It has an otherworldly feel.

The duo will release its follow-up, "After the Disco," in January 2014. "Holding on for Life" is the first complete new track we've heard from Broken Bells, which teased new music in an album announcement trailer and seven-minute sci-fi short film. The song opens with a funky,...

Indie bands doing short films is kinda so hot right now. As it becomes increasingly challenging to get noticed above the fray, bands have taken to the medium to give fans and newcomers alike a different way of entry for their music. Of course, Arcade Fire teamed with Spike Jonze for "The Suburbs," while Beach House took the more Diy route and made "Forever Still" themselves. And now a couple more bands are stepping towards cinema with interesting results. First up, Broken Bells—the project from The Shins frontman James Mercer and beatmaker/producer Danger Mouse—have dropped the first part of "After The Disco," which also happens to be name of their forthcoming album. Titled "Part One: Angel and The Fool," this one stars Anton Yelchin and Kate Mara in the reality/fantasy blurring love story that follows a man who yearns to fall in love with space traveler.

"Star Trek's" Anton Yelchin is back in sci-fi territory. The first part of a new short film promoting indie rockers Broken Bells' forthcoming studio album "After the Disco" has hit the web, and it sees Yelchin starring as an ordinary young man named Oliver who "wakes up" in a spectral dream world where he encounters and ultimately falls in love with a beautiful female astronaut named Helen (Kate Mara). What follows is a sweet, dialogue-free romance set to the strains of the Bells' music that becomes complicated by the arrival of a large floating pink globe (not incidentally identical to the...

Danger Mouse and The Shins’ James Mercer have once again joined together as Broken Bells, and will be putting out a new record next January. There’s not much information about it other than a title, After The Disco, plus a video teaser, set in some sort of futuristic desert, soundtracked by something that’s probably a new song. Still, fans should be stoked.

Joss Stone has confirmed plans for her new album. The singer will release The Soul Sessions Volume 2 in the UK on July 16 and the Us on July 31. The collection - Stone's sixth overall - will serve as a sequel to her 2003 debut album The Soul Sessions, which sold over 5 million copies worldwide. The album will contain 11 cover tracks from the likes of The Rolling Stones, Womack & Womack and The Chi-Lites. The Soul Sessions Volume 2 also features a take on Broken Bells' 2009 track 'The High Road'. "I think 'High Road' is quite a different one for me," Stone told Billboard. "It's still soul but it's got a darker tone to it, certainly in the beginning of the song." Talking about her place in today's industry compared to when she first started, Stone explained: "I (more)...

Band may have changed labels — and members — but mastermind James Mercer insists to MTV News, 'It is still a band.'

Nearly two years ago, when James Mercer was doing press for Broken Bells, his collaboration with producer Brian "Danger Mouse" Burton told MTV News that he had no intention of abandoning his day job as frontman/songwriter for the Shins.
The problem was, Broken Bells ended up being bigger than either man could have expected, and that long-awaited fourth Shins album kept getting pushed back further and further. Though through it all, Mercer maintains he was always working on the record; he was just never quite sure when he was going to be able to finish it.
"It's been five years [since the Shins' Wincing the Night Away], but the Broken Bells kind of takes a two-year chunk out of that, and I've got two kids now,...

Christmas greetings to all; had enough of your Mum blasting out some Bruno Mars and your Nan playing Buble on repeat, well here’s my top 10 best albums of 2011 just in time, ready for some light hearted discussion on this year’s music.
Whilst 2011 was a killer 12 months for games fans, cinema was crazily mediocre, but the music world was blessed with another good year. I was lucky enough to attend the Leeds Festival, one as usual set amongst a hectic summer schedule of mud, sweat and tears. I also found myself buying more albums as the year offered some impressively talented LPs. Below is a list of my top ten favourite albums of 2011. As I have quite a mainstream taste for music, I’d love some further suggestions on what you think are the best albums of 2011, enjoy.

The Shins have announced details of their long-awaited fourth studio album. Port of Morrow will be released in March, 2012, and will be the follow-up to 2007's Wincing the Night Away. The album will be released through frontman James Mercer's Aural Apothecary label with Columbia Records, after leaving Sub Pop in 2008. It was recorded during the past year in Los Angeles and Portland. Mercer joined up with Gnarls Barkley's Danger Mouse for the band Broken Bells in 2009, and released the Ep Meyrin Fields earlier this year. (more)...

The Black Keys typically keep it simple: two guys, drums, guitars and thick slabs of bluesy goodness. They also keep it quick, which explains how the duo has already recorded their follow-up to 2010's breakthrough album, Brothers, according to drummer Patrick Carney.
"We just finished making a new album. So that's going to come out either later this year or early next year," Carney told MTV News of the seventh disc from the group fronted by guitarist/singer Dan Auerbach. The band spoke to us on the black carpet of the VMAs, where they were up for Best Rock Video for "Howlin' for You" but lost out to veteran rockers the Foo Fighters.

The Shins’ James Mercer has shifted his label, Aural Apothecary, to Columbia Records. The news means we’re one step closer to getting the Shins follow-up to 2007’s “Wincing The Night Away.” The Shins are working with Greg Kurstin on the new set, according to Pitchfork. The move to Columbia makes a lot of sense given that Broken Bells, Mercer’s side project with Danger Mouse, Broken Bells, are on Columbia. The Shins left Sub Pop, its former home, in 2008 and moved to Mercer’s Aural Apothecary imprint. The Shins also announced a handful of new dates, many of them surrounding their previously...

Brian Joseph Burton, the man the music world knows and loves as Danger Mouse, turns 34 today, and his many milestones are rather mindboggling. Growing up on the music of Pink Floyd and Portishead, Burton fit right in while living in London, where he moved to make a name for himself as a trip-hop DJ but instead found himself focusing on making hip-hop beats. But it was a moment of true serendipity that led Burton to where he is today.
While cleaning around his apartment and listening to the Beatles’ White Album, Burton came across his a capella copy of Jay-z’s The Black Album, and inspiration struck. After completing one song successfully and with surprising ease, Burton took to mashing up the entirety of both albums, creating The Grey Album. The result was clearly not exactly legal since it was the music of two separate iconic acts...

The line up at this year's Outside Lands Music Festival has kicked the music rumor mill into high gear. Why? Because The Shins are playing. The Portland, Ore.-based band hasn't played a show since 2009 and most people thought the band was done. As you may recall, frontman James Mercer has been busy making beautiful music with DJ Dangermouse under the moniker Broken Bells. But 24-bit is reporting that last month, Mercer played a benefit show in Portland, which included a new song. Mercer took the opportunity to announce that The Shins were working on a new album and that song would be on it. Then came the booking at Outside Lands. With all the evidence, we are voting to believe the rumors: The Shins are back.

Listeners of Sound On Sight Radio know that we love to play music in between film reviews. We often receive emails with listeners complimenting the music we play, and usually people ask for the names of the artists and songs. So based on listener feedback, I’ve decided to post something new on the site. Welcome to Ricky D’s track of the day. Every day, I’ll select one of my new favorite songs and once in a while I’ll play a classic, but always something most people probably haven’t heard of. In other words, I won’t be choosing anything too mainstream.

Broken Bells have just made public their "Heartless Empire" music video on AOL. Filled with their in-studio performance footage, the clip "shows Mercer helming the seven-piece rock outfit while Danger Mouse hits the drums and ragged guitar chords rip underneath the verby vocals and brass accompaniment."
"Heartless Empire" is taken from Broken Bells' new mini album "Meyrin Fields" which is released a year after their 2010 self-titled effort which received positive reviews. The song reportedly is an unreleased song from their previous studio session.
Broken Bells consist of indie musician James Mercer and multi-instrumentalist Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse. Last year, this duo broke Billboard Hot 200 with their eponymous effort, climbing to No. 7 on the U.S. albums chart.

The 49th annual Ann Arbor Film Festival is an epic celebration of experimental media that runs for six days on March 22-27. There’s so much great stuff screening this year, it makes one wonder what they’ll have left for their 50th anniversary next year!
A couple of the highlights include the highly anticipated feature-length documentary The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye by Marie Losier, which chronicles the pandrogynous love story between industrial music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and his late wife. The film already made a big splash at the Berlinale earlier in the year and looks to be a major hit on the festival circuit this year.
Also not to be missed is a special retrospective of one of this year’s festival jury members, Vanessa Renwick, a longtime favorite on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film. Renwick will screen 10 of her quirky and artistic documentary portraits,...

Mathew Cooper, who records as Eluvium, was struck by the themes of damaged things in director Matt McCormick's "Some Days Are Better Than Others" when he set about scoring the film, and decided to use an cache of damaged equipment to do it.
Years of thrifting all manner of junked keyboards and gear finally paid off for Cooper who longed to lure out the "ghosts" within them. The result is his moving score, thick with nostalgic drone, quietly bursting with broken things. It's being released April 26th, on Temporary Residence Ltd. You can listen to the title track here, courtesy of Pitchfork.

"Some Days Are Better Than Others" stars Portlandia's Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney) and James Mercer (Broken Bells, The Shins), who occasionally cross paths as they struggle with the broken parts of their lives.

After a 2010 with loads of critical acclaim, Broken Bells have a start into 2011 with another new effort. The Grammy-nominated duo will be releasing "Meyrin Fields," a four-song Ep, on March 29. It contains two previously unreleased tunes"Windows" and "Heartless Empire," plus two tracks that were already at digital retailers. The title track was the B-side to "The Ghost Inside" single, released in the fall last year, and "An Easy Life," which was off of the iTunes LP of the self-titled full-length. It seems James Mercer and Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse) are sticking with Columbia, and "will continue to record ...

Over the course of his career, prominent producer/multi-instrumentalist Brian Burton (Aka: Danger Mouse) has teamed up with a variety of indie-rock acts including Beck, The Black Keys and Sparklehorse. Everything up to this point, however, has been a one-and-done effort. So upon working with James Mercer to create Broken Bells, we figured that the partnership would turn into another one-off project. But perhaps things have changed for Burton, as they just have announced the release of Meyrin Fields later this month....

That "What's one more drink?" feeling, the "Hey, it's 11pm which sounds like an awesome time to start a movie!" urge. Because it's all so close you can taste it and it tastes like the weekend and sleeping in even though you know in the back of your mind that you still have to go to work/school the next day. Or some of you do, if you don't I'd really rather not hear about it because I do. However, I do hope you have a fabulous last weekend in February when it makes it way to rolling around and that your Sunday night is entertaining whether or not you're watching the Oscars.
