Even for Richard Linklater, who famously shot a little bit of “Boyhood” each year from 2002 to 2013, his “Merrily We Roll Along” is ambitious.
Linklater plans on shooting Stephen Sondheim’s 1981 musical every couple of years for the next 20 years. One sequence that had already been filmed, the concluding number “Our Time,” had to be reshot following Paul Mescal replacing Blake Jenner in the cast. (Beanie Feldstein and Ben Platt are also in the cast.) That means we’re looking at a release for “Merrily We Roll Along” in the early 2040s.
“Merrily” famously tells its story in reverse-chronological order over 20 years, to show how movie producer Franklin Shepard (Mescal) abandons his friends as he moves through Hollywood. And as opposed to a conventional production in which makeup would age or de-age the actors during the course of a typically compressed film shoot, Linklater wants to capture the process of aging,...

Ryan Murphy made headlines back in 2018 when the prolific producer of TV hits ranging from "Glee" to "American Horror Story" signed a massive content deal with Netflix, estimated at a record-breaking $300 million. Since then, Murphy and his collaborators have delivered a head-spinning array of projects for viewers of the streaming service, in addition to various shows for network television and the FX basic cable brand.
Known for audacious and outrageous plot twists, compelling characters, and assembling a repertory company comprised of some of Hollywood's finest actors, Murphy has managed to leave his imprint on everything he touches. Realistically speaking, Murphy has increasingly spread himself thin as he continues to pump out more and more television content within multiple genres. Though everything remains thoroughly on brand, not all of those projects achieve the same level of quality. Occasional stumbles are inevitable. With that in mind, read on for a roundup of...

Ben Platt has nothing but raves for Paul Mescal. The two actors are joining forces for Richard Linklater’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” an adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim and George Furth musical that’s being filmed over the course of two decades. Variety reported earlier in January that Mescal had replaced Blake Jenner in the lead role of Broadway composer Franklin Shepard. Platt said at the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance that working with Mescal is already “wonderful.”
Platt is starring in the musical as Franklin’s creative partner and lyricist Charley, while Beanie Feldstein is taking on the role of their good friend and theater critic, Mary. The story tracks the trio’s disintegrating friendship as Franklin abandons Charley and Mary to become a successful Hollywood film producer. Back in 2019, Richard Linklater announced what was probably going to be the most ambitious film project of his career, “Merrily We Roll Along.” Unfortunately, this is a film you won’t be able to see for another couple of decades, as Linklater is filming segments with the same group of actors over the course of 20 years to properly adapt Stephen Sondheim‘s acclaimed musical. And it appears the film has already hit a bit of a snag, as Paul Mescal has been brought in to replace one of the three leads.

Paul Mescal Replaces Blake Jenner In Richard Linklater's 20-Year Adaptation Of Merrily We Roll Along
Variety is confirming a story first reported by Above the Line that up-and-comer Paul Mescal is replacing Blake Jenner as the lead in Richard Linklater's ambitious film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along." Linklater is taking a "Boyhood" style approach to this adaptation where he'll be shooting this film over the course of 20 years, so I guess if they were going to make any big changes now's the time to do so!
Jenner, who worked with Linklater in "Everybody Wants Some," has been mired in controversy recently after admitting to psychological and physical abuse against his partner. Officially, there hasn't been a statement from Linklater or the studio over whether or not Jenner was let go because of controversy or whether there was another reason (like the always dependable catch-all known as "creative differences"), but the end result is the same: Jenner is out and rising...

Paul Mescal is replacing Blake Jenner in the decade-spanning production of the movie musical of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Richard Linklater will be directing the project, which is being backed by Blumhouse, and will shoot over a 20-year span. (The director shot his Oscar-winning Boyhood over 12 years.)
The much-beloved musical, based on the 1934 play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, follows Franklin Shepard, a talented composer of Broadway musicals that abandons his friends and career to become a producer of Hollywood movies. The story begins at the height of his Hollywood fame and moves backwards in time, showing important moments in Frank’s life.
Mescal will be playing the lead role of Broadway composer Franklin Shepard, which was previously meant to be played by Jenner. After being cast, Jenner was embroiled in allegations of domestic abuse.

We’re only nine days into the year, but Paul Mescal is already having quite the 2023. Just days after landing the coveted lead role in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel, the “Aftersun” star has joined the cast of Richard Linklater’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” IndieWire has confirmed. “Normal People” star Paul Mescal, who made a splash last week when he was cast in the “Gladiator” sequel, is replacing Blake Jenner in “Merrily We Roll Along,” according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Richard Linklater is directing the feature film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim and George Furth musical of the same name.
Mescal will play Franklin Shepard, a once-in-a-generation composing talent who morphs into a self-centered Hollywood producer barely clinging to his second marriage.
Jenner, the former “Glee” star, left the project shortly after allegations of domestic abuse were raised by his ex-wife and former co-star Melissa Benoist in 2019. Jenner would issue an apology almost a year later.

Richard Linklater’s feature film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical “Merrily We Roll Along” is merrily rolling again, with “Aftersun” and “Normal People” star Paul Mescal stepping into the lead role of Broadway composer Franklin Shepard, replacing original star Blake Jenner.
Mescal joins Ben Platt, who plays Franklin’s creative partner and lyricist Charley, and Beanie Feldstein, playing the duo’s good friend, theater critic Mary. The story tracks the trio’s disintegrating friendship as Franklin abandons Charley and Mary to become a successful Hollywood film producer — the twist is that the story is told in reverse chronological order, starting with Mary castigating Franklin as a sell-out and ending 20 years earlier with the characters as fresh-faced hopefuls.
Variety has confirmed that Mescal has already shot a segment for the film.

Paradise City is a movie starring Bruce Willis, John Travolta and Stephen Dorff. It is directed by Chuck Russell.
A run-of-the-mill thriller that funnily enough, counts on some sequences and scenes that barely saves it from being a complete fiasco.
Premise
The renegade bounty hunter, Ryan Swan, has to pave his way into the Hawaiian criminal underworld to avenge his father’s murder.
Movie Review
Here we are offered an extremely irregular film, which at times comes across as a TV production, and at others surprises with good dialogues and photography. It combines simple and easy scenes with hackneyed plots that seem to have a failed ulterior motive, failed in the sense that they are diluted and disappear in what is a simple thriller, with a retro 90’s touch, maybe even 80’s (you decide).
Its strongpoint: John Travolta taking on the role as the kingpin, big kahuna in Hawaii. Let’s admit it,...

“Paradise City” is a semi-under-the-radar junk crime thriller, but when a movie like this one stars actors like John Travolta, Bruce Willis, and Stephen Dorff it can sometimes mean two things: that the stars are slumming, but that you’ll have fun watching them. The same movie made with grade-z actors wouldn’t have the same frisson. (It would be a pain to sit through.) Chuck Russell, the director of “Paradise City,” is actually a semi-a-list veteran whose credits include “The Mask,” “The Scorpion King,” “Eraser,” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors” (which some of us thought of as a rare ’80s slasher-movie standout). Who would have imagined that those credits, in the sage of Netflix, would now make Russell sound like some sort of low-grade genre renaissance man? In “Paradise City,” an underworld drama set on Maui, Russell knows that he’s making a grubby piece of product,...

It wasn’t all fun and games on Ryan Murphy’s “The Glee Project”, apparently.
To mark the 10th anniversary of the final episode of the reality show, that aired from 2011 to 2012, contestants have spoken out about their time on the series.

True Detective star Stephen Dorff and The Edge of Seventeen‘s Blake Jenner have joined the Hawaiian production of Paradise City, which reps John Travolta and Bruce Willis’ first movie since 1994’s Pulp Fiction.
Willis plays renegade bounty hunter, Ryan Swan, who must carve his way through the Hawaiian crime world to wreak vengeance on the kingpin, played by Travolta, who murdered his father. I’m told the project is billed as being similar to Miami Vice but with bounty hunters instead of cops. Thai actress and model Praya Lundberg also stars.

The actor claimed that he also experienced abuse during their time together.
Jenner said via Instagram that in the time since Melissa came forward, he's reflected on their time together, saying that he stayed silent "out of shame and fear."
"But I know this is something that needs to be addressed, not just publicly, but also privately with the individual directly affected and with myself," he said.
He explained that his marriage to Benoist was filled with "moments of jealousy, bouts of insecurity, and volatility," which he alleged was the result of broken childhoods.
Jenner added that even though he wanted to divorce Melissa, he stayed with her out of obligation.

Nearly a year ago, Supergirl star Melissa Benoist took to Instagram to share a very personal story about her experience with domestic violence and intimate partner violence (Ipv). However, she never named the ex-partner who abused her in the 14-minute video. There was speculation that it was Blake Jenner but it wasn’t until today that the speculations were confirmed. The actor himself took to Instagram to take responsibility.
In the lengthy Instagram post, Jenner does name Benoist. He begins, “Over the past eleven months, I have been thinking about how to address a personal situation made public in late-2019. Throughout that time, I reflected on a period in my life that I had previously kept in the darkness out of shame and fear, but I know this is something that needs to be addressed, not just publicly, but also privately with the individual directly affected and with myself.”

Former “Glee” star Blake Jenner has released a lengthy statement responding to the allegations of domestic abuse raised by his ex-wife and former co-star Melissa Benoist late last year, taking “full responsibility” for the injuries the “Supergirl” star sustained during their relationships while saying the emotional and physical abuse was “inflicted from both ends.”
“I take full responsibility and accountability for the hurt that I inflicted during my relationship with my past partner–emotionally, mentally and yes, physically,” Jenner wrote in the statement, which was posted to his Instagram account on Thursday, nearly a year after Benoist first went public with her accusations.
However, the actor also accused Benoist of abusing him while they were together, saying that she “isolated” him from loved ones throughout their relationship and at one point broke his nose. “I was scratched. I was slapped. I was punched in the face, which caused a trip...

After years away from the spotlight Renee Zellweger made a comeback this fall with her performance as Judy Garland in the biopic “Judy,” but her comeback actually started several months earlier with her starring role in the Netflix limited series “What/If.” We already know she’s a Golden Globes front-runner for “Judy” (and the Oscars front-runner too), but could she get a surprise second Globe nom for her role on the streaming series?
“What/If” isn’t the kind of program you’d typically think of as awards bait. It’s a provocative thriller from Mike Kelley, who previously created the similarly sexy primetime soap “Revenge.” But the Globes often love a juicy soap. They awarded Best TV Drama Series to twisty relationship dramas like “Nip/Tuck” (2005), “Grey’s Anatomy” (2007) and “The Affair” (2015), and they gave Best TV Comedy Series to “Desperate Housewives” (2005-2006) and “Ugly Betty” (2007). “Revenge” also earned a 2012 Globe nomination for scene-stealing villainess Madeleine Stowe.

Richard Linklater set an unusual precedent when the 2014 film Boyhood came out. It was a film he had worked on for twelve years, telling the story of a boy, his sister, his parents, and the world around him. It was a great movie, and the most interesting part was how he chose to tell the story. Instead of casting multiple people to play each role, or use makeup to age an adult in the film, he simply shot the film over a twelve year period. So when it was all said and done, you watched those characters grow upon the screen. It was really cool. It’s more of a gamble to do a film this way, but I think it’s a pretty cool payoff with the end result. He’s now taking on a project with the same format, but this time, it’s even more ambitious.

Trouncing the 12 years he devoted to Boyhood, the director will take two decades to adapt Merrily We Roll Along with Beanie Feldstein, Ben Platt and Blake Jenner
The 12 years Richard Linklater invested in shooting – on and off – his coming-of-age tale, Boyhood, were well spent. The film is regularly cited as one of the best dramas of all time, performed healthily at the box office, won multiple awards for its cast and crew, and won Linklater major plaudits for such an innovative approach to on-screen ageing.
The director is now set to repeat the trick, with the announcement that he’s to devote some of the next 20 years to a production of Merrily We Roll Along, Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Broadway musical about a songwriter in danger of losing his friends while dazzled by showbiz.
