“Survivor” is a game that ends with one person claiming the life-changing $1 million prize, but sometimes the winner is not the one people expect. The title of Sole Survivor is the result of taking out the biggest competitors, being likable in the cast, and appealing to the jury, all while arguing the case of why you’re the most deserving of the win. While many of the champions are well-deserved, at least according to the passionate fans at home, others spark massive debate when Jeff Probst reads their names out loud. Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access) where we detail the Top 10 biggest “Survivor” upset winners of all time.

At the start of “Survivor 43” it was looking like series history would be made if they had become the first season to vote five women out in a row. Thankfully they dodged setting what would have been an unfortunate record, but sadly “Survivor 44” is already in the same position. Setting aside the medevac of Bruce Perreault on Day 1, four women have once again been the first four voted out of a “Survivor” game. If the players extend it to a fifth next week, they will make history as the first and only cast to eliminate five women out in a row.
As things stand, the game will remain in the three tribe format for at least one more episode. Ratu voted Maddy Pomilla out first, Tika is responsible for sending home both Helen Li and Sarah Wade, and Soka ousted Claire Rafson after she sat her out for three straight immunity challenges.

Survivor champ and The Challenge: USA winner Sarah Lacina called out Tony Vlachos for his real job as a police officer, eventually leading to one of the most successful alliances in franchise history, Cops-R-Us. During a recent interview, the Game Changers winner admitted production played a role in helping her discover Tony’s true identity.
Sarah Lacina reveals how producers helped her identify Tony Vlachos as a cop
Speaking to podcast Challenge Mania during a February 2023 appearance, Iowa-based investigator Sarah Lacina noticed Tony Vlachos during casting and felt he looked, dressed, and walked like a cop.
Additionally, Sarah recalled him repeatedly getting brought up in her interviews and realized producers “lit up” when she identified him as a police officer, clueing her in. When asked about using production as an edge in the game, the Iowa native noted she used her Cagayan experience with them to help her game in subsequent seasons.

The castaways of “Survivor 43” have positioned themselves to set a new record next week — all they need to do is vote out a fifth woman in a row. So far the cast has only eliminated females: Morriah Young, Justine Brennan, Nneka Ejere and Lindsay Carmine were the first four players voted out, matching a franchise record. If they continue on this path and vote another woman out next week, they will go down in infamy as the record holders for longest succession of female eliminations to start a season. Yikes!
Luckily, as it stands in Gold Derby’s racetrack odds, the cast is not headed toward setting such a disastrous record. Instead, Geo Bustamante leads our current predictions to be eliminated in Episode 5 at 19/25. He is followed, however, by four women with decent odds to go: Cassidy Clark at 6/1 and Jeanine Zheng, Elisabeth ‘Elie’ Scott and Noelle Lambert all at...

Over the past 40 seasons of “Survivor,” men have won 25 times while women have only prevailed 15 times. (See the “Survivor” winners list.) The past six cycles in a row have all resulted in male champions, with the most recent woman winner being Sarah Lacina in Season 34. With the Season 41 finale set for Wednesday night, all eyes are on whether one of the last two females on the island (Erika Casupanan or Heather Aldret) can break the curse this year. Or will one of the three men prevail instead?

It seems like only yesterday the 20 returning “Survivor” champions returned for an epic clash in “Winners at War,” but now we’ve already reached the Season 40 finale. Heading into Wednesday’s three-hour event, only five castaways remained in the running to win the $2 million prize: Ben Driebergen, Denise Stapley, Michele Fitzgerald, Sarah Lacina and Tony Vlachos. But there were 14 players living on the Edge of Extinction who were itching for their chance to return to the game: Natalie Anderson, Amber Mariano, Danni Boatwright, Ethan Zohn, Rob Mariano, Parvati Shallow, Yul Kwon, Wendell Holland, Adam Klein, Tyson Apostol, Sophie Clarke, Kim Spradlin-Wolfe, Jeremy Collins and Nick Wilson. The 20th contestant, Sandra Diaz-Twine, quit after being voted out on Day 16.

Most “Survivor” devotees are betting on Tony Vlachos to claim the title of Sole Survivor on the 40th season of the CBS show, “Winners at War.” The biggest argument made for predicting his ultimate victory on the three-hour finale this Wednesday, May 13? He is the only one of the 20 previous champs competing on this so-called “season on steroids” whose name has never been written down during a Tribal Council. He might be twitchy as an itchy squirrel sometimes, but he has shown off both his leadership skills, his physical prowess and endurance and even his social game.
That is why an overwhelming 62% voted in our Gold Derby poll for Tony to win it all and become just the second winner to win “Survivor” twice since Sandra Diaz-Twine, who left the season early after being blindsided with her own immunity idol and quit once she got to the Edge of Extinction.

“Survivor: Winners at War” sees 20 winners return to duke it out. It’s the greatest crop of contenders the game has ever seen. In my weekly “Battlelines” recap I will diagnose the casualty, declare who I think won the episode’s battle and who is best positioned to win the war. Please feel free to give me your thoughts in the comments below.
Battlelines redrawn again
We saw a recalibration of the battlelines after Tony Vlachos, Nick Wilson, Jeremy Collins and Michele Fitzgerald voted against Sarah Lacina, Ben Driebergen, Kim Spradlin and Denise Stapley to blindside Sophie Clarke. While Tony and Sarah patched things up, Nick made a final three deal with Michele and Denise. The three seemed on board with Kim’s plan to take Tony out. Ben was in the loop, but considering options. Tony winning immunity meant we didn’t see if these new alliances would hold.

Last week after Sophie Clarke‘s shocking blindside, the Top 8 contestants of “Survivor: Winners at War” were determined: Jeremy Collins, Ben Driebergen, Michele Fitzgerald, Sarah Lacina, Kim Spradlin-Wolfe, Denise Stapley, Tony Vlachos and Nick Wilson. With so much infighting and mistrust between the remaining players, there was no telling who might be eliminated this week. So how did everything play out, and whose torch did Jeff Probst snuff at the end of the hour?

As we enter the endgame of “Survivor: Winners at War,” the competition is heating up. And no one may be more equipped to handle the rising temperature than firefighter Jeremy Collins. In our exclusive interview with “Big Little Lies” star Adam Scott he opened up about his love of the game (watch here). He told us, “This is an incredible season. Maybe the best. It really is unbelievable. I’m really pulling for Jeremy. But I think everyone is aware he could easily win. I’m worried for him.”
Jeremy is a great player. He won the 31st season of the show, which saw returning players who failed to win come back for another tilt. He was able to stay in control throughout a turbulent season and won a unanimous victory from the jury. It would be so poetic if this champ from a season of all losers came back...

After a momentous episode, Tony Vlachos is now the frontrunner to win “Survivor: Winners at War.” For many weeks, Sophie Clarke had been Gold Derby’s top contender to win Season 40 but Tony just orchestrated a blindside on her in a carefully calibrated 4-3-2 move, sending her out with an idol in her pocket. Can Tony actually go all the way after this move? Gold Derby users seem to think so.
Tony currently has 3/1 odds of emerging victorious from “Survivor: Winners at War,” according to our winner predictions. He is the overwhelming favorite among all predictors, racking up more top votes than the other 18 contestants combined. Michele Fitzgerald is a distant second with 37/10 odds followed by Sarah Lacina in third at 9/2. Nick Wilson, Kim Spradlin and Denise Stapley are the only other players who have more than one top vote.

One man, Tony Vlachos, completely redrew the battlelines. The previous episode he voted with Sophie Clarke, Sarah Lacina, Ben Driebergen and Nick Wilson. This time with Kim Spradlin and Denise Stapley joining that group to split votes between Jeremy Collins and Michele Fitzgerald, Tony saw an opening. It looks like the Cops-r-Us alliance on “Survivor: Winners at War” is about to be put out to pasture. After Tony Vlachos made the bold move to eliminate Sarah Lacina‘s close ally Sophie Clarke in last week’s episode, we see Sarah’s emotional reaction in CBS’s all-new preview trailer for Season 40, Episode 12 (watch above). “You just sunk my game!” Sarah tells Tony when they get back to camp. She then hisses, “I’m done! Do not talk to me ever again.” Can Tony find a way to reel in his cop buddy, or is the Sophie blindside the last move he’ll make?

Jeff Probst: Nude contestants aren’t allowed on ‘Survivor’ anymore because the ‘culture’ has changed
In past seasons of CBS’s long-running reality TV show “Survivor,” contestants were often seen walking around nude, including most notably Richard Hatch, the winner of Season 1 (“Borneo”) and a controversial figure in Season 8 (“All-Stars”). However, Jeff Probst noted at a recent event that since the “culture” has changed, “Today it wouldn’t get past our producers for half of a second.”
As the four-time Emmy-winning host explained, “It speaks to the fact that ‘Survivor’ is always of the moment because it’s fresh. Not withstanding returning players, you typically have new people playing and whatever is happening in the culture is what’s happening.” In other words, “Survivor” has evolved, so if you want to see pixelated bodies go watch “Naked and Afraid.”

After 11 episodes of “Survivor: Winners at War” only eight former champions remain in the main game while 11 others inhabit the Edge of Extinction awaiting their last chance to leave the jury and re-enter the competition. Last week, “Cagayan” winner Tony Vlachos dominated the game from all angles, putting him in a power position as the game nears its close, but placing an even bigger target on his back as he remains only one of two players in the game without a vote cast against them.
In the coming weeks Tony’s biggest job will be keeping the eyes off of him and on other players, but that may prove difficult now that he’s betrayed the trust of his closest ally, Sarah Lacina. Tony successfully maneuvered a vote to narrowly oust Sarah’s righthand woman, Sophie Clarke, without telling her. The move promises to fracture the cop alliance, possibly pushing...

After 11 episodes of “Survivor: Winners at War,” Tony Vlachos still has yet to receive a single vote at tribal council. Considering how much of a known threat he was heading into this epic 40th season, that is quite the accomplishment indeed. When this New Jersey police officer originally played in “Survivor: Cagayan,” his cutthroat attitude and penchant for lying made him one of the most slippery villains to ever win CBS’s reality TV show. He returned in “Survivor: Game Changers,” but his reputation got the best of him and he was the second player voted out.

“I’m sad!” Sophie Clarke exclaimed when she arrived at the Edge of Extinction following her shocking elimination during Wednesday’s “Survivor” episode. In her end-of-show interview, she declared, “I’ve never been blindsided before. I think it’s a traumatic experience. I played as best as I could and it’s a bummer to go out with an idol in your pocket. I probably came into this game feeling like I was a bottom tier winner and it’s been fun realizing that I can hold my own.”
Well, Sophie, we have news for you. “Survivor” fans not only considered you a top tier champion, they also thought you were one of the most deserving to claim the $2 million prize on “Winners at War.” In our recent poll, 13% of viewers said they were rooting for Sophie to win, just behind Tony Vlachos and “someone from Edge of Extinction,” two options that tied at 21% support.

Last week on “Survivor: Winners at War,” the final 10 castaways seemingly divided into two groups of five, with Tony Vlachos, Sarah Lacina, Sophie Clarke, Ben Driebergen and Nick Wilson on one side and Jeremy Collins, Kim Spradlin-Wolfe, Michele Fitzgerald, Denise Stapley and Tyson Apostol on the other. Jeremy peaced out at tribal council thanks to his “safety without power” advantage, leaving his group at a numbers disadvantage they simply couldn’t overcome. In the end, Tyson was sent to the Edge of Extinction (again). Did Jeremy and Kim’s group rebound this week, or did Tony and Sarah’s group continue their dominance?

Battlelines are drawn
For the first time since the merge, battlelines were clearly drawn. No longer were a handful of players on the outs. There were two clearly defined groups of five firing at each other. On one side there was Tony Vlachos (who won immunity), Sophie Clarke (who had an idol), Sarah Lacina (who had a vote steal), Ben Driebergen and Nick Wilson. On the other side we saw Jeremy Collins (who had safety without power), Kim Spradlin (who had an idol), Tyson Apostol, Denise Stapley and Michele Fitzgerald.

“Survivor: Winners at War” contestant Jeremy Collins used his Safety without Power advantage at last week’s Tribal Council, so he may be out of luck for this week. The “Cambodia” champion has been playing a solid game on this all-winners season thus far but he narrowly avoided being blindsided last week and unless things change drastically, he’s bound to be targeted again, especially now that he played an advantage.
Jeremy currently has 3/2 odds of getting the boot at this upcoming Tribal Council, according to Gold Derby odds. This is the first time all season that the Massachusetts native has been the frontrunner in our odds to be voted out next. But if it’s not Jeremy, there are still plenty of predictors expecting it to be either Kim Spradlin (9/4 odds), Tony Vlachos (15/2) or Sophie Clarke (23/2). After using her hidden immunity idol last week on “Survivor: Winners at War,” Kim Spradlin-Wolfe now sets her sights on one of the biggest threats still in the game: Tony Vlachos. “I think Tony is trying to play double agent,” she whispers to Denise Stapley in CBS’s latest preview trailer for Season 40, Episode 11 (watch above). “Survivor” fan favorite Tyson Apostol often uses humor as a coping mechanism, but host Jeff Probst noticed something unusual after his second elimination from “Winners at War” in the 10th episode. He knows he can win his way back in again. He just did it once. If he gets back in at the end, he is a threat. For a moment you saw, ‘Oh my God, they voted me out twice.'”

When “Survivor: Winners at War” host Jeff Probst reads the final votes of Season 40 (from the comfort of his own home), whose name will you be rooting for to see on the parchment? As of this writing, only nine castaways remain in the running to take home the series-high prize of $2 million, with one more scheduled to join them from the Edge of Extinction at a later date. Vote in our poll below for the person you hope wins “Survivor 40” on May 13, and then be sure to defend your choice in the comments section.

Adam’s idle quest sees him off the podium
What a wild season for Adam Klein! His frenetic gameplay got him into plenty of trouble. But his weakness was also a strength. His fast-paced adaptability saw him survive the first tribal of the season and navigate his way through the tribe swap to the merge. It is also saw him win the turbulent “Millennials vs Gen X” season which had switching alliances, idol plays and a rock draw. It was probably his undoing though.

And then there were 10. After weeks of epic challenges, jaw-dropping blindsides and fire token drama, “Survivor: Winners at War” took a break from the cutthroat competition this week to reunite the remaining castaways with their loved ones. We hope you had your tissues handy as Tyson Apostol, Sophie Clarke, Jeremy Collins, Ben Driebergen, Michele Fitzgerald, Sarah Lacina, Kim Spradlin-Wolfe, Denise Stapley, Tony Vlachos and Nick Wilson hugged and kissed their spouses, significant others, children, etc. After all was said and done, who had their torch snuffed by host Jeff Probst?

The most recent “Survivor” winner on the Season 40 cast will likely get voted out next, predict our users. Nick Wilson, who won Season 37 (“David vs. Goliath”), now finds himself on the bottom among the final 10 castaways, getting votes at the last Tribal Council and having very few allies left in the game. Nick came into “Survivor: Winners at War” as one of the least threatening former champions — not exactly a dominant competitor despite playing a strong social game. But now, as the majority alliance continues to pick off those types of non-threats in the post-merge, Nick’s time may be running out.
Nick currently has 3/2 odds of being the next boot of “Survivor: Winners at War,” according to Gold Derby user odds. However, if it’s not Nick that goes home in Wednesday’s loved ones episode, prognosticators are expecting it to be Tyson Apostol, who returned to the active...

No one on “Survivor” could have prepared themselves for what’s about to happen in next week’s highly anticipated loved ones episode. In the past, a single friend or family member was allowed to visit the island to boost the contestants’ spirits and give them a little love. But as this is “Winners at War,” the reality TV show stepped things up dramatically by bringing on entire families. “This is a fantasy come true,” weeps Tony Vlachos as he embraces his wife and daughter. Season 40’s loved ones episode airs Wednesday, April 15 on CBS, but you can watch the preview trailer above right now.

Wendell sent to ‘kick it’ on extinction
When the guys on the Yara tribe turned on each other, it was likely going to spell trouble at the merge. It burnt bridges with people from their old tribe and they didn’t have many other connections. And it put Wendell Holland on the outs this week. The vote could have easily been Nick Wilson, but Wendell’s relationship with Jeremy Collins put a target on his back. This season on “Survivor,” connections (even perceived ones) have proven a detriment.

Sophie Clarke wasn’t quite a legend tier “Survivor” champ heading into “Winners at War,” but that might just change by the end of this season. Starting with the fourth episode of the season, Gold Derby users have expected Sophie to be the champion of this all-winners season and our users haven’t budged since. Now, with 11 players including Sophie left in the game, the “South Pacific” winner is looking better and better to be cashing that $2 million check at the end of the game.
Sophie has a 31/10 chance of winning this 40th season of “Survivor,” according to our odds. Sophie got into a majority position on her tribe from the jump and stealthily called the shots in the shadows throughout the pre-merge. She was instrumental in last week’s merge episode, leading the charge to take out Wendell Holland. Sophie currently has more no. 1 votes than all other players on this cast combined,...

Adam Klein continues to be the no. 1 most predicted boot on “Survivor: Winners at War.” The 28-year-old “Millennials vs. Gen X” champion has had a difficult road to the merge, ticking off allies and having plans backfire in his face. The 11 remaining castaways — plus one Edge returnee! — are about to hit a Survivor milestone. Ladies and gents, drop your buffs: It’s time to merge!
As fans know, the first joint tribal council can be a make-or-break vote for many players’ games. Merges re-shuffle the deck, as former tribemates are reunited, new friends and foes are made and loyalties either get shifted or bulldozed all together. Historically, merges set the stage for some of the show’s best blindsides, so strap in and hold on tight. This week’s episode (airing Wednesday at 8/7c on CBS) is sure to bring some fireworks.

We’re midway through the landmark 40th season of “Survivor,” and one thing is clear: 60-minute episodes just aren’t enough. Too much good material is being left on the cutting room floor — case in point, an entire pizza challenge went unaired from last week’s episode. (Adam Klein confirmed on social media his Yara tribe won the yummy reward comp.) Recently we asked “Survivor: Winners at War” viewers whether they were okay with 60-minute episodes, and only 5% said yes. The other 95% demanded more, more, more, but their poll results were split between wanting 90-minute editions and two-hour shows.

“Survivor: Winners at War” is about to send two castaways to the Edge of Extinction, according to the previews. Only one tribe will win immunity, sending two to Tribal Council where they will each vote somebody out. Gold Derby odds predict that Adam Klein of the Yara tribe and Parvati Shallow of the Sele tribe will be the unfortunate victims of this week’s episode. Both have been in precarious situations so far this season and it looks like they both might miss out on the coming merge at the last minute.
Adam currently has 15/2 odds of being booted, say our Gold Derby prognosticators. Adam started off “Survivor: Winners at War” on the wrong foot by scurrying off with Denise Stapley on Day 1, which made him an early target, and it’s been a rough go since. He then made things worse by playing both sides in Episode 3, where he narrowly survived by one vote.

Rob Mariano may be one of the most well-known “Survivor” players of all time, but that wasn’t enough to save him from an early exit on “Winners at War.” As Gold Derby predicted, Boston Rob became the sixth person voted out of Season 40 during Wednesday’s tribe swap episode after he found himself on the new Yara beach with two former enemies (Ben Driebergen and Adam Klein) and two complete strangers (Sarah Lacina and Sophie Clarke). After having his torch snuffed, Rob bequeathed his two fire tokens to his best buddy Parvati Shallow, bumping her up to four total. That number now ties her with Natalie Anderson, making Parvati and Natalie the richest players in the game.

Heading into Wednesday’s fifth episode of “Survivor: Winners at War,” Gold Derby readers predicted that the castaways most in danger of being voted out were Rob Mariano, Adam Klein and Parvati Shallow. These three were at the bottom of their Sele tribe following the recent eliminations of Danni Boatwright and Ethan Zohn. However, a tribe swap was on the horizon for all 15 players still in the game. Did the switcheroo help or hurt the games of Boston Rob, Adam and Parvati? And who was the sixth castaway to have their torch snuffed by Jeff Probst?
