The Golden Globes are dubbed the “party of the year,” and with every great event in Tinseltown, there’s typically a long wind up and a ton of ancillary shindigs. But 2024 is a new year and Hollywood is not the same place it once was.
On Friday evening, however, the scene outside Chateau Marmont mirrored pre-pandemic days. A huge crowd of fans packed onto the slim sidewalk above Sunset Boulevard. Paparazzi scrambled to get pics of Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig, Nicolas Cage and Emma Stone as they exited their respective SUVs and headed upstairs for cameos at W Magazine’s annual best performances party in the hotel’s disco ball-decorated penthouse. Chateau’s chic gatekeeper Anya Varda was overheard exhaling, “they hate me,” in reference to the paps or the fans, but either could be true.

Barbie director Greta Gerwig emerged from the elevator at the Château Marmont with producer David Heyman and her agent Jeremy Barber in tow.
Pleasantries and hugs were exchanged between them and May December filmmaker Todd Haynes and his longtime collaborators, the producers Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler. We were all waiting to go up to the hotel’s penthouse suite, with its sumptuous wraparound terrace, for W Magazine’s annual soiree to celebrate publication of its Best Performances edition, hosted by W’s editor in chief Sara Moonves and Lynn Hirschberg, who has a pretty much unerring eye for discovering talent.
Margot Robbie attends W Magazine’s annual Best Performances Party at Château Marmont on Saturday
“So, if Greta’s leaving, who’s left upstairs?” Haynes wondered aloud as he entered the lift.
Amanda Grandinetti, the Château’s managing director who’d squeezed in with us, assured us that the joint was popping upstairs.

Goodbye, Christmas and New Year’s. Hello, awards season!
The Golden Globes are upon us, and that means the festivities kick off with W Magazine’s annual Friday night soiree toasting its Best Performances Issue. Expect to see well-heeled, A-List celebrities mix and mingle elbow-to-elbow in the penthouse suite of the Chateau Marmont.
That same evening, Jon Hamm, Willem Dafoe and Wilmer Valderrama will be among the celebs at the Golden Globes Foundation Dinner helping to present $5 million in grant awards to 96 non-profits.
In the past, studios and networks threw lavish affairs in separate ballrooms at the Beverly Hilton immediately following the Globes, but things have slowed down in recent years due to the Covid pandemic and controversies that rocked the HFPA. Instead, there are smaller affairs being thrown at venues throughout Los Angeles in the nights leading up to the Globes and immediately following the big show.

Awards season kicks into overdrive on the first weekend of the year with the return of the Golden Globes. The 81st telecast has a new broadcast partner (CBS), a new host (Jo Koy), new catering (Nobu) and a new social calendar accompanying it. For years, the Golden Globes were followed by a crush of studio and network bashes inside the show’s headquarters at the Beverly Hilton, making it a favorite of countless party-hopping revelers. But pandemic era cutbacks and studio consolidation upended the festivities — gone is the Warner Bros. and InStyle soiree while HBO scaled back under new corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery and will be hosting something on Emmy weekend — though all is not lost. This year’s parties are spread across the weekend and at various venues across the city.

The celebrated director looks back at her career, sharing the inspirations and experiences that shaped films from Lost in Translation to her forthcoming biopic, Priscilla. Words by Sofia Coppola, introduction by Kathryn Bromwich
There is a particular aesthetic that runs through Sofia Coppola’s work, whether she is turning her gauzy, feminised lens on the southern gothic of The Beguiled or urban alienation in Lost in Translation, the rococo excesses of Marie Antoinette or disaffected suburban youths in The Bling Ring. Coppola is adept at creating heady atmospheres and worlds that feel fully realised, her characters veering between emptiness, desire and repression; the frames in her films have a painterly quality, straddling the line between beauty and claustrophobia. Her singular style has influenced much of contemporary popular culture, from Lana Del Rey’s wistful music videos to Emma Cline’s novels about lonely and potentially dangerous young women.

While there has not been a shortage of books about Sofia Coppola, the filmmaker has now completed her first book. A career-spanning summation, Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999-2023––due out this fall––is constructed from Coppola’s personal collection of photographs and ephemera, including early development work, reference collages, influences, annotated scripts, and unseen behind-the-scenes documentation.
Capturing all eight of her films, the book spans 488 pages. Designed by Joseph Logan and personally edited and annotated throughout by Coppola, the book offers an “intimate encounter with her methods, references, and collaborators and an unprecedented insight into her working processes.” The book also features an extended interview with Coppola, conducted Lynn Hirschberg.
Speaking with Vogue, the filmmaker also opened up a bit about her forthcoming feature starring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi. “When I was shooting Priscilla there were a lot of moments that reminded me of other movies I’d made. It...

Hollywood didn’t let rain and flash flooding warnings get in its way of heading to the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood Friday night for W magazine’s Best Performances party.
The penthouse was packed with A-listers and awards hopefuls. Austin Butler grabbed a Casamigos spicy cucumber jalapeno margarita at the bar for his girlfriend Kaia Gerber while “The White Lotus” star Lukas Gage danced wildly with “Hacks” breakout Megan Stalter. Daisy Edgar-Jones showed off some moves with Ella Hunt. Jessica Biel and Alison Brie squealed when they ran into each other.
Hosted by W’s Sara Moonves and Lynn Hirschberg, the annual gathering traditionally takes place the Friday before the Golden Globes, but it was pushed to SAG Awards weekend this time around. The evening also marked the festivities’ return to the Chateau after relocating to Gigi’s in 2022.
On the menu were mini-cheeseburgers and pigs-in-a-blanket.

It’s hard to believe now, but it took until 1996 for the broadcast networks to finally hire their first-ever female entertainment president, when ABC recruited Jamie Tarses away from NBC to take the job. There had been a handful of other women in powerful slots, including Lucie Salhany, who was briefly chair of the Fox Broadcasting Co. before launching Upn. But until streaming upended the business, “entertainment president” was the most visible, and arguably the most important, leadership job at a network. And until Tarses, it had been all men.
Tarses’ rise at ABC coincided with the start of my career as a cub reporter, covering the network TV business in Los Angeles, and one of my first duties was to chronicle the tenure of the young trailblazer. But from the start, Tarses was faced with many in Hollywood looking to tear her down — be it rivals jealous of her age,...

Jay Roach’s late-breaking awards-season hopeful “Bombshell” (December 20) boasts several feats of makeup and wardrobe mastery, from Charlize Theron’s Megyn Kelly to John Lithgow’s disgraced, late Fox News CEO Roger Ailes — jowls, bulbous nose, corpulence and all. During a recent Q&a for the film in New York moderated by journalist Lynn Hirschberg, Lithgow was joined by co-stars Theron and Nicole Kidman, who plays TV news personality Gretchen Carlson, as well as director Roach and screenwriter Charles Randolph, to discuss the making of the film.
The makeup team is led by Kazuhiro Tsuji, who won an Academy Award in 2018 for transforming Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill and also turned Eddie Murphy into “Norbit” in 2007. Lithgow himself played Winston Churchill on Netflix’s “The Crown,” but without any makeup, hairstyling, or wardrobe needed to abet his transformation.

W magazine’s pre-Golden Globes party on the Friday night before the big show is often one of the hardest fetes to get into, and this year’s bash was no exception.
As always, the soiree took place in the penthouse suite of the iconic Chateau Marmont hotel.
But Keegan-Michael Key and Sarah Hyland were among some guests who had trouble making it past the velvet rope because they were duped — as was this Variety reporter — into handing over their party tickets to a scammer posing as security.

From the moment it first screened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the story around “Matangi/Maya/M.I.A.” is that its namesake — the iconoclastic English-Sri Lankan musician and general force of nature — is unhappy with the documentary that longtime friend Steve Loveridge has made about her. This critic was at that premiere, and remembers spending most of the supremely awkward Q&A that followed staring at the floor and praying for the sweet release of death. “He took all my cool out,” Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam said to the audience after bemoaning the film’s length. “It’s not the film that I would have made.”
Well, yeah. As even Arulpragasam seemed to understand, that’s kind of the whole idea. Once an aspiring documentarian herself, she knew — when she gave Loveridge a 700-hour cache of home video footage in 2011 — that he would use it to cobble together an honest, subjective, and occasionally unflattering portrait.

Long before “Galang” and “Paper Planes,” and prior to her Oscar nomination and universal fame, there was a time M.I.A. was Mathangi Arulpragasam, the daughter of Tamil refugees who fled conflict-stricken Sri Lanka to settle in 1980s England. More an account of her origins than a stylized tour documentary, Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. draws from over 700 hours of footage M.I.A. personally recorded at different stages of her career to offer an intimate pre- and-post-stardom bio-doc that feels just as magnetic as the artist it brings and dissects on screen.

Katy Perry, along with a whole slew of other A-list celebs like Kristen Stewart, Zoë Kravitz, and Cara Delevingne, chopped off all her hair in April dyeing it a shade of platinum blonde and giving us some serious Justin Bieber vibes. While she confessed to Ellen DeGeneres that the chop actually started out as an accident, saying, “Sometimes your hair falls out when you go too blonde. So, this is the way I handled it,” it seems that the musician has now grown to love the look, telling W magazine that thanks to her haircut she’s never felt so free.

“The Godfather” isn’t the only classic whose cast and crew are reuniting at Tribeca this weekend. Last night also saw a 25th anniversary screening of “Reservoir Dogs,” with Quentin Tarantino appearing alongside Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi and Tim Roth to discuss his classic debut.
Lynn Hirschberg moderated the discussion, beginning the proceedings by asking Tarantino about the film’s world premiere at Sundance. The writer/director called the event “kind of a disaster” because of technical difficulties: “At the height of it all, when everyone is pointing their guns at each other, the power went out. It was a fucking disaster.”

Okay. So, like, some of Hollywood’s biggest stars are totally channeling their inner Cher Horowitz
Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Lucas Hedges and Alden Ehrenreich weren’t totally clueless when it came to performing the teen’s famous, pro-immigration debate speech from the popular ’90s film Clueless.
In W magazine’s latest Casting Call video the actors go all out for the high schooler’s speech, but Hedges delivers the most casual performance — likely because the 20-year-old wasn’t born when the 1995 cult-classic Clueless came out.

Look, we know the year is still young — infantile even — but if any movie-related video in the next eleven months is even half as joyful and smile-inducing as this one then 2016 is going to be an amazing year. W Magazine has celebrated cinema the past few years with a series of short interview snippets featuring actors answering a simple question. Previous incarnations have inquired about screen crushes, inspirations, and films that made them cry, but this year Lynn Hirschberg spiced things up a bit by asking about their favorite sex/love scene. Saoirse Ronan’s response is all kinds of lovely thanks not only to her film choice but also her accent, her vocabulary, her accent, her energy, and her accent. The others aren’t quite as memorable, but a few of the highlights include answers from Greta Gerwig, Charlize Theron, Bradley Cooper, and Peter Sarsgaard.
