In a recent interview with Serieously at the Paris Fan Festival, Taz Skylar, the actor who portrayed Sanji in One Piece live-action series, revealed an anecdote involving the creator Eiichiro Oda, where he personally designed a One Piece tattoo for him.
During the interview, Skylar recounted a dinner with Oda in Japan, where he expressed his desire to get a One Piece themed tattoo. However, he felt overwhelmed by the vast options within the universe.
It was then Taz asked Oda if he could design something specific for the cast. To his delight, Oda graciously agreed and crafted a unique tattoo design specifically for him and his fellow cast members.
“When we went to have dinner with Oda in Japan, I wanted to get a One Piece tattoo for a while. There’s so much to choose from that I’m like what’s the thing? Like what is the...

This year’s Cannes is set to be the most activist-heavy yet. As well as potential protests around #MeToo and the Israel-Hamas war — not to mention a potential workers strike – animal rights activists are also hoping to make a splash during the festival.
“Orca – Black & White Gold,” a documentary about the international trade of endangered orcas, is set to screen next week as part of the Marché du Film. The screening, which is being organized with the help of non-profit organization The Blue Water Institute on May 20, will be followed by a Q&a with the film’s director and producer Sarah Nörenberg and Muriel Arnal, president of French animal rights Ngo OneVoice.
Variety understands part of the reason for screening the film in Cannes is to highlight the plight of three captive orcas at the Marineland animal park in nearby Antibes, which is just a 40 minute drive from the Palais des Festivals.

During the Paris Fan Festival, Taz Skylar, the actor cast to portray Sanji in Netflix’s One Piece Live-Action series, opened up about the initial wave of negative comments he faced on social media following the casting announcement.
During the festival’s Q/A session, Taz recounted his very first exposure to criticism and it was around the time when the One Piece casting news came out. He revealed that his friends informed him that his name was trending on Twitter alongside references to his resemblance to rapper Eminem.
“The best way to get me to do something is tell me I can’t do it,” Skylar stated, revealing that rather than being deterred by the negative feedback, he found motivation in the challenge. “I remember I laughed because I was like, you know what, they have a point. I do kind of look a little bit like Em,” he added.

Netflix’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga is set to return for its second season in 2025, with co-executive producer Joe Tracz joining the creative team. Tracz, known for his work on Percy Jackson And The Olympians, will serve as writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner alongside Matt Owens.

Tracz expressed his enthusiasm for joining the One Piece team, citing his admiration for Eiichiro Oda’s imaginative world-building and the impressive achievements of the live-action adaptation thus far.
“I’ve been lucky to work on big adaptations of several beloved series, and they don’t come bigger or more beloved than One Piece. I’m a huge fan of Oda-san’s incredible imagination and I was blown away by what the live-action team created in Season One. So it’s a dream...

It's the end of the week for composers Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinell. It's a Friday when we speak, but their work is far from over. The composing duo rarely ever stop, and they wouldn't have it any other way. They're the musical duo behind NBC's new series "The Thing About Pam," Amazon's "The Romanoffs," and maybe one of the most listened-to scores of the last few years, Netflix's "The Witcher." They've also scored films that some genre fans will recognize: "Darling," "Like Me," and "M.F.A."

Exclusive: Deadline has the first pair of exclusive tracks from Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli’s score for The Thing About Pam, which is set for release via Milan Records on April 15, following the airing of the NBC true-crime ratings hit’s finale.
The Blumhouse Television-produced limited series centers on the 2011 murder of State Farm employee Betsy Faria (Katy Mixon), which resulted in her husband Russ’s (Glenn Fleshler) conviction, although he insisted he didn’t kill her and was later exonerated. This brutal crime set off a chain of events that would expose a diabolical scheme deeply involving Faria’s supposed friend, Pam Hupp (Renée Zellweger).
From Belousova and Ostinelli’s perspective, Pam is someone who “tromps through town like a predatory larger-than-life force that will crush anything that comes her way.”
The show’s main theme, “The Thing About Pam,” is billed as “a motif combined with a predatory march,...

Pam Hupp, the real-life murderer played by Renee Zellweger in NBC’s “The Thing About Pam,” apparently had a habit of slurping her flavored soft drink from the local convenience store. It’s a recurring gag in the six-part series, and it even became part of its musical score.
Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli, the composing team whose music for “The Witcher” became a viral hit in early 2020, have spent the last five months coming up with unique sounds for “Pam,” which dramatizes a small-town Missouri murder in 2011 and the botched police investigation that followed.
“This is a true-crime, network show,” Ostinelli notes, “and there is a certain sound that goes with this. We needed to do something completely different.” Especially when showrunner Jenny Klein asked the composers for a theme that said “minimalistic, playful ‘Jaws,'” a reference to John Williams’ classic shark theme from 1975.

“The Witcher” is an action-adventure fantasy epic that premiered its first season on Netflix in December. So naturally one of its best chances for an Emmy might be … for songwriting? “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” (watch the lyric video above) became a viral hit with a number of fan covers and remixes appearing online in the months since. Now that song — which was written by Sonya Belousova, Giona Ostinelli and Jenny Klein — is on the awards ballot for Best Music and Lyrics. O Valley of Plenty, can you spare a nomination?

Baby Yoda. Jean-Luc Picard. A medieval witcher. A world where fairies have sex with humans. Steve Carrell aiming for the moon. A science-fiction anthology. The fantasy and sci-fi realms prospered on TV during the past season, particularly with the help of several gifted composers.
The anthology “Tales From the Loop” (Amazon) boasted the most high-profile theme, by famed minimalist Philip Glass, in partnership with Scottish composer Paul Leonard-Morgan. The two ended up scoring all eight episodes together.
As they were beginning, sitting at pianos in Glass’s New York studio, Glass remarked to Leonard-Morgan, “your melodies are beautiful but your harmonies need work!” But, as Leonard-Morgan related, “by episodes 2 and 3, we were so much on each other’s wavelength that people didn’t know what was coming from Philip or from me.”

Netflix’s The Witcher became an instant hit with fans all around the world due to getting a number of things just right, but perhaps the most consistently strong element of the first season was the epic soundtrack – as it should’ve been.
After all, we’re talking about a fantasy saga that involves a mutant human who hunts down mythological monsters for a living. And even if we completely exclude Geralt, the narrative basically revolves around a child of destiny whose blood will supposedly save the world from the White Frost and usher in a new era for humans, dwarves, the elves of Aen Elle, and every other sentient being who lives in the Continent. But alongside the epic and solemn compositions that make up the soundtrack of The Witcher, we also have the joyful ballads of one Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove, whom fans of the games...

Fans of The Witcher are still struggling to get the hit Netflix show out of their heads, and for good reason. A riveting performance Henry Cavill did give as Geralt of Rivia, but the titular monster hunter is far from the runaway winner in this particular popularity contest. No, it’s Jaskier, or more specifically, a certain one of the bard’s songs, that’s living rent-free in the minds of fans following the release of Lauren Hissrich’s acclaimed adaptation.
Indeed, “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” has become something of a pop culture phenomenon since its whimsical lyrics first passed Joey Batey’s lips, to the extent that its composers have now taken it upon themselves to offer an official lyric video for the ballad over on YouTube.

In case you missed the memo, The Witcher is kind of a big deal right now.

Geralt of Rivia may be the central star of Netflix’s hugely successful Witcher adaptation, but the monster hunter’s newfound popularity certainly hasn’t been a solo effort. In fact, fans and critics alike are in unanimous agreement that supporting characters such as Yennefer and Ciri have ultimately been just as integral to the show’s success as Geralt himself, with one of the white-haired warrior’s companions being responsible for a particularly memorable highlight.

The gritty world of “The Witcher” is unlike anything else currently on television, and series composers Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli spent the last year using 64 instruments to bring the series’ fantastical monsters and magic to life on Netflix. IndieWire is premiering “The Last Rose of Cintra,” one of seven original songs Belousova and Ostinelli produced for the new epic fantasy show, and recently spoke to the duo about the series’ unique recording process and the eclectic instruments used to craft its distinctive soundscapes.
While the prior two songs IndieWire exclusively premiered, which included the main theme of series protagonist Geralt of Rivia, were fairly uplifting and spirited, “The Last Rose of Cintra” is a comparably slow, bleak affair that boasts a brooding atmosphere and lyrics that warn of impending war. It’s an appropriately forbidding song for “The Witcher”: The series might feature plenty of outlandish elements, but...

“The Witcher” deals with monster slaying, warring kingdoms, and political intrigue, and Netflix’s upcoming epic fantasy series has a suitably bombastic score to supplement the high-stakes action.
The show, which premieres on Netflix December 20, centers on monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, (Henry Cavill), a mutant who gets wrapped up in a spiraling plot of political intrigue and visceral action. Crafting a score for “The Witcher,” which is based on the hit novels of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, was no small task, and composers Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli spent much of the last year working on soundscapes to do all the monsters, mutants, and mayhem justice. The duo previously collaborated on several other television projects, including scoring “The Romanoffs” and “The Mist.”

“Lying and Stealing” is a heist movie of a sort mostly seen in the 1960s, when movies like “Charade” found ingenious thieves played by glamorous stars preying upon the priceless knickknacks of the super-rich on the Riviera, and so forth. Such enterprises usually involved not just A-list personalities but lavish production values — all the better to realize that fantasy side of a decade that was stuck closer to Playboy Magazine and hotel-lounge luxury than to Free Love. If there was love (or at least sex) in these movies, it was going to be expensive.
But Matt Aselton’s film does not boast anyone so chic — or bankable — as Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. Nor does it lay on the splashy wish-fulfillment settings, though the movie does cough up a few locations at which a homeowner might credibly own an artwork worth more than most of us earn in a lifetime.

The last time we caught up with composer Giona Ostinelli, he discussed his intriguing collaborations with Mickey Keating, and after the release of Carnage Park last summer, Ostinelli has kept busy creating unnerving music for Spike's The Mist TV series. Daily Dead had the pleasure of touching base with Giona once again for our latest Q&A to discuss conjuring creepy chords for the Stephen King adaptation.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us again, Giona. How did you get involved as the composer for Spike’s new The Mist TV series?
Giona Ostinelli: Thank you for having me, it’s always a pleasure! Well, I was hiking and suddenly the sun disappeared under a thick layer of fog. I tried making a phone call but, of course, there was no phone reception whatsoever and so I decided to wait it out until the sun comes back again.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Lin-Manuel Miranda are two of the most likeable stars in the entertainment business and collaborative partners for the successful new movie Moana. What’s next for Hollywood’s most charming duo? Apparently, it’s a mini-musical about millennials, with YouTuber Meg DeAngelis in the starring role.
Johnson and Miranda have grabbed all the headlines related to Millennials: The Musical, but at the same time, the creative talent associated with Millennials consists mostly of up-and-coming artists, many of whom have ties to the online video community. The project’s director, Scott Brown, is known for web series like Blue Movies and Destroy The Alpha Gammas. Sonya Belousova, who co-wrote the music and lyrics, is the force behind the keys for Player Piano. DeAngelis, the star of Millennials, has 5.5 million subscribers on her YouTube channel, and many other creators (including Flula, who has a small role) join her in the cast.

In PlayerPiano's latest video, pianist Sonya Belousova plays a cover of Danny Elfman's theme song from Tim Burton's 1989 classic film, Batman. Oh, and she's dressed what looks like the same Catwoman suit Michelle Pfeiffer wore in Batman Returns, so that adds another level of cool to this whole thing. Player Piano isn’t the most popular channel on YouTube, but thanks to its bright, colorful sets and some seriously impressive piano skills, it has picked up a devoted following. Now, the musical show directed by Tom Grey and starring Sonya Belousova is entering the next phase of its growth, and it’s starting with a frequent fan request. The latest video on the Player Piano channel is a cover of the “Moon Theme” from the Nes video game DuckTales.
As is the case with other Player Piano videos, the “Moon Theme” cover combines a unique, custom-designed piano with Belousova’s virtuoso performance. This time, the piano is shaped like an Nes console, in order to drum up nostalgia among the channel’s audience.
That audience has already supported Player Piano in a big way; in 2015, it delivered more than $71,000 to Grey and Belousova through Indiegogo so they could continue making videos.

After hearing the Star Wars theme song being played on guitar by Cooper Carter, we can now find out what the song sounds like when it is being played on a piano.
Concert pianist Sonya Belousova and filmmaker Tom Grey are famous for their epic recreations of geeky music on pianos. (We've featured their work a number of times on the site already.) Now they return to amaze Star Wars fans with a beautiful and slightly gentler variant of the saga’s theme song on a modular piano. During Belousova's performance, the instrument undergoes visual changes — from Darth Vader’s outfit, to the Millennium Falcon, to R2-D2. The pianist also changes her appearance and clothes that she wears to match the look of her piano.

If you thought The Walking Dead theme song needed fewer string instruments and more piano, it's your lucky day! Composer and pianist Sonya Belousova regularly adapts pop-cultural tunes for the piano, and she's tickling the ivories in her piano rendition of the song of the undead. And, yes, that is a violinist being attacked by zombies, because this theme is being taken very seriously.

I still haven't ever seen an episode of Doctor Who (I know, I know), but I have a feeling that those of you who are really into the show will get a kick out of this video. Composer Sonya Belousova comes popping out of the Tardis (I do know that much) and performs a pretty intense piano cover of the theme song. Check it out below:
And if that's not quite your thing, maybe you'd prefer to listen to the real theme song for the next ten hours straight:

YouTube stars PlayerPiano have debuted their very special version of the Doctor Who theme - with a grand piano in Tardis blue for a suitably grand performance.
PlayerPiano is a collaboration between director Tom Grey and composer / pianist Sonya Belousova, putting a classical twist on beloved songs and soundtrack themes.
"Doctor Who is one of those unique properties that has a fanbase spanning generations," Grey told Digital Spy. "I grew up watching Tom Baker's fourth Doctor and, like everyone else, was reintroduced when the BBC began its new run in 2005.
"From a visual standpoint, I was very interested in exploring that history with the 12 different Doctors and we felt we could do a great tribute to the entire series, not just modern Doctor Who."
Belousova added: "Plus, the main theme is incredibly iconic. It was an exciting experience to explore it in a new and original way."

Pianist Sonya Belousova at PlayerPiano has managed an amazingly entertaining feat by arranging several classic Nintendo theme songs on the spot by request and then playing them on the piano. It's pretty spectacular to watch. I wish I was this good at playing the piano. I can't even play "Chopsticks," though. I think it's awesome when extremely talented people like this put their talents to good, geeky use. The theme songs that she plays here include Kid Icarus, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Bros., Castlevania, Mega Man II, Duck Tales, and Zelda.

Cosplay is nothing new. Cosplay piano is. Russian pianist Sonya Belousova is a breathtakingly talented musician who does cosplay piano. Sonya dresses like characters from the property, and takes her piano to elaborate settings meant to evoke the theme song she plays. It's basically an elaborate music video. She has given the cosplay treatment to themes from Game of Thrones, Batman, and Superman. But the one we are most excited about is The Walking Dead. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this beautiful ode to a zombie masterpiece.
