NBC dropped some good news to take us into the weekend.
The network unveiled its 2024 fall schedule, highlighting fan-favorite franchise dramas, two nights of laughs, huge unscripted hits and the biggest and best live specials and holiday programming.
If that seems like a mouthful, the details will probably help you see what’s what.
Fall Season
Three new series are set to premiere in the fall, including the drama Brilliant Minds, starring Zachary Quinto and inspired by the true story of a revolutionary, larger-than-life neurologist, Oliver Wolf, and his team of interns as they explore the last great frontier — the human mind — while also grappling with their own relationships and mental health.
St. Denis Medical, which stars Wendi McLendon-Covey, Allison Tolman, and David Alan Grier and is from co-creators Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin, brings the laughs with a mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors...

Growing up and finding your identity can be quite a fight sometimes. Perhaps this is why many features take the simile quite literally by telling the story of a fighter and his/her struggles with their family, their upbringing and also their culture. In their short feature “The K-Town Killer” directors Vahan Bedelian and Healin Kweon take these ideas and implement them within the community of Korean immigrants in the USA. As Bedelian describes, the feature is “about more than a fighter hiding her career”, but also about cultural and generational gaps.
The K-Town Killer is screening at New Filmmakers LA
For years, Grace (Kahyun Kim) has been a professional kickboxer, a fact she has been careful to hide from her mother Sally (Joy Sung Kim). One day, as she is visiting her, she witnesses first hand how her mother's landlord Fred (Tony Nevada) has been harassing her about the rent.

People say truth is stranger than fiction, but the story in "Cocaine Bear" the movie is definitely more interesting than the true story behind it. In real life, the bear dubbed Pablo Eskobear ate a bunch of coke that was dumped from a drug smuggling plane and died from an overdose. In the vision of bloody mayhem created by director Elizabeth Banks and writer Jimmy Warden, though, the bear in question went on a drug-fueled murder spree, mauling anyone who got in her way. Even Margo Martindale wasn't safe!
"Cocaine Bear" landed in the zeitgeist earlier this year, taking Twitter by storm before its release, thanks to its wild title and even wilder premise. The movie ultimately grossed over $87 million at the box office (per Box Office Mojo). An attention-catching genre mashup with a relatively lean budget and a good theatrical haul should be like studio exec catnip, so where's the "Cocaine Bear" sequel news?...

Director Elizabeth Banks’ “character-driven thriller” Cocaine Bear (read our review Here, get a copy at This Link) wasn’t exactly a blockbuster – it earned $89 million at the worldwide box office on a budget in the range of 30 to 35 million – but it did get a lot of positive attention when it was released. And I thought it was a blast to watch. So I welcome a Cocaine Bear 2… and during an interview with Rolling Stone, Banks said she would also welcome it.
When asked about the possibility of working on a sequel, Banks told Rolling Stone, “I had an absolutely great time working on the (first movie). I loved how subversive, crazy, silly, and funny it was. I loved surprising people with the cast. I don’t think anybody was expecting Margo Martindale, who’s 70 years old, to shoot that kid. “Young Rock” is done.
NBC made the decision official on Friday, canceling the half-hour comedy series inspired by Dwayne Johnson’s life after three seasons.
“Young Rock” followed young Dwayne Johnson as he navigated his rise from unknown wrestler to Hollywood superstar. Together, Dwayne and his unorthodox family faced locker room politics, new rivalries and the perils of burgeoning fame as he found his voice in the WWE as The Rock. Told through stories from his own life, the show followed Dwayne’s journey to the top and the characters that kept him grounded — even as he set his sights on ever-bigger arenas.
Adrian Groulx, Bradley Constant and Uli Latukefu played young Dwayne during various stages of his childhood. Joseph Lee Anderson portrayed Dwayne’s late father, Rocky, while Stacey Leilua played his mother, Ata.
The show wrapped its third (and now final) season Feb. 24, averaging less than 2 million viewers per episode.

The fate of American Auto is still up in the air, but NBC has confirmed the fate of half-hour comedies Grand Crew and Young Rock. The third season of Young Rock – based on the life of Dwayne Johnson and starring/executive produced The Rock – is the series’ final season, as NBC has opted not to renew the comedy for season four.
Filling one of the now vacated primetime slots will be St. Denis Medical, a new mockumentary-style comedy that’s just been given a series order by the network. NBC’s announcement of the scheduling moves included this description of the new show: “A mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed...

Young Rock was the series based on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson through various stages in his life.

Grand Crew followed a group of Black friends as they unpacked life’s ups and downs at their favorite watering hole, a wine bar in Los Angeles.
Grand Crew also premiered in 2021.

NBC has given a series order to “St. Denis Medical,” a comedy series hailing from “Superstore” and “American Auto” creator Justin Spitzer alongside Eric Ledgin, who also wrote and executive produced on both shows.
Per the official logline, the series is “a mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity.”
In her first role since May’s conclusion of “The Goldbergs” on ABC, Wendi McLendon-Covey stars as Joyce, St. Denis’ executive director and former oncological surgeon who has big dreams for the future of the hospital, though those dreams are not currently being realized. And as reported exclusively by Variety, Allison Tolman will play Alex, the supervising nurse in St. Denis’ emergency department who is dedicated to providing excellent care to her patients, often sacrificing her personal life to maintain her high standards.

It will be a quick return to network primetime for Wendi McLendon-Covey. NBC has picked up to series St. Denis Medical, its single-camera workplace comedy starring The Goldbergs alumna and veteran David Alan Grier.
This marks the first 2023 NBC pilot to get a series order as the network again shifted most — in this case all — pickup decisions to after the upfronts.
The first pickup is not a surprise: St. Denis Medical, written by the Superstore and American Auto duo of Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin and to directed by Superstore’s Ruben Fleischer, was an early front-runner, getting enthusiastic reception in network screenings.

Get your mirror plates ready, and don’t leave any food out in the open because Cocaine Bear is about to rage on Peacock. The laugh-out-loud R-rated comedy is coming to the streaming service 50 days after its theatrical debut on April 14. Elizabeth Banks directs from a script by Jimmy Warden about a massive black bear that rampages through the woods after finding bags of cocaine in the woods.
If you’re unaware of the true story that inspires Cocaine Bear, well, it’s a doozy. In 1985, convicted drug smuggler Andrew Thornton was on a smuggling run from Columbia and had dumped several packages full of cocaine before jumping from the plane himself. Unfortunately, he hit his head on the tail of the aircraft and wound up in a free fall to the ground, where he was found dead in someone’s driveway. Written by the Superstore and American Auto duo of Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin and to be directed by Superstore’s Ruben Fleischer, St. Denis Medical is a mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity.
Lawson plays Bruce, a trauma surgeon working primarily in the Emergency Department. Bruce is very talented, he knows it and wants everyone else to know it. Kim plays Serena, an Emergency Department nurse who leans toward homeopathy and is Alex’s work wife. Leeper plays Matt, a well-meaning Emergency Department nurse whom we meet on his first day as a Registered Nurse.

Director Elizabeth Banks’ “character-driven thriller” Cocaine Bear (read our review Here) already received a digital release a few weeks ago, but another digital release is coming up later this month – and this release is being called the Maximum Rampage Edition! The Maximum Rampage Edition will be available digitally on April 14th and will be reaching Blu-ray and DVD on April 18th. Physical media copies can be pre-ordered at This Link.
Cocaine Bear is based on true events that took place in Kentucky in 1985. As our own Kevin Fraser reported last year, the true story goes like this: “In 1985, convicted drug smuggler Andrew Thornton was on a smuggling run from Columbia and had dumped several packages full of cocaine before bailing from the plane himself. Unfortunately, he hit his head on the tail of the aircraft and wound up in a freefall to the ground where he was found dead in someone’s driveway.

Cocaine Bear is directed by Elizabeth Banks, with an ensemble cast that includes Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery-Jennings and Alden Ehrenreich.
A movie that starts off with a comic bump and cites Wikipedia as a source can’t be bad, can it?
If you take it seriously, it’s a B-movie with little plot and a series of “well-worn” jokes that are probably funnier after you’ve had two or three whiskeys or your favorite substance.
If you don’t take it seriously: it’s an eighties revival that’s lot of fun and is done with period effects.
Very funny.
Plot (to call it something)
A guy throws some packets of cocaine out of a plane, which end up in the paws of a bear, which dances furiously in a park that is similar to Yellowstone – but with an entirely different Yogi there…

This post contains spoilers for "Cocaine Bear."
If you love slasher films and you also love bears, then boy are you gonna love "Cocaine Bear," playing in theaters now. The movie is exactly what the trailers promised it would be: a story about a bear who gets exposed to a lost shipment of cocaine, and then goes on a 90-minute killing spree in her quest to find more cocaine. As outlandish as it sounds, "Cocaine Bear" was actually inspired by a true story -- except the real cocaine bear died of a massive overdose instead of going on a rampage.
There's a lot of over-the-top violence and gore in this film, although maybe not as much in the first half as we might've wanted. Throughout the first third, "Cocaine Bear" has a tendency to cut away right as the bear attacks. At first it might seem as if this movie...

“Cocaine Bear,” in which a wild bear accidentally ingests a ton of blow and goes on a crazed rampage, hit theaters on Feb. 24. Is it the over-the-top horror comedy the trailer promised or does it — like a certain stash of cocaine — completely miss its target?
It opened to mostly positive reviews and a 74% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes with TheWrap’s Alonso Duralde calling it “a briliant binge of comedy horror.”
Here’s what you need to know about the movie, which is directed by Elizabeth Banks and stars Keri Russell, Ray Liotta and O’Shea Jackson Jr.

Cocaine Bear is exactly what you want, need, and expect it to be. Director Elizabeth Banks assembled a cast willing to just go for it, and together they’ve delivered one of the funniest, most insane R-rated horror / comedy / thriller / crime caper / buddy comedy / cautionary tale / coming-of-age films in history. Of course, it helps that there are very few, if any, films that have dipped their toes into that many genres all at once and been successful while doing so.
Cocaine Bear’s very loosely inspired by a true story. Fact: In 1985, a 175-pound black bear, now lovingly referred to as Pablo Escobear, did ingest cocaine that had fallen from a plane. Fact: The bricks of cocaine tumbled into the bear’s path after drug smuggler Andrew Thornton (played by The Americans’ Matthew Rhys in a brief but memorable cameo) tossed them from a plane and then followed them out.

The title says it all. Just like Snakes on a Plane was about just that, the new horror comedy Cocaine Bear is about a 500-pound bear on a jihad after coming upon a ton of cocaine dropped into rural Georgia on a drug run gone wrong. The bear ingests the coke, and soon you have a beast roaring out of control and devouring whatever human comes onto his path. It is all not to be taken seriously, but fortunately director Elizabeth Banks is smart enough to give audiences hungry for a Jaws in the wilderness some nice scares mixed in with the laughs plus a bit more bang for their buck than just a marketable title.

Universal Pictures is giving director Elizabeth Banks’ “character-driven thriller” Cocaine Bear a theatrical release tomorrow, February 24th (you can read some early reactions Here), and some movie-goers are already hoping for a follow-up that would be called Cocaine Shark. It remains to be seen is there’s going to be a sequel at all, let alone one that would go aquatic, but during a conversation with Variety screenwriter Jimmy Warden (who happens to be married to genre icon Samara Weaving) confirmed that he has ideas for multiple sequels.
When asked if he has a sequel in mind, Warden replied, “Yeah, for sure. Not just a sequel. Many sequels. Cocaine Bear in Space is where we would probably end.“
When the interviewer said they couldn’t tell if he was kidding or not, Warden continued: “No, I’m f*cking with you about Cocaine Bear Goes to Space. But for the sequels,...

“Cocaine Bear” director Elizabeth Banks is worried about her mother seeing the horror comedy when it opens on Friday.
“I’m going to be honest with you, no one knows what to make of it when I tell them about it,” Banks told Variety at the movie’s premiere Tuesday night at Regal LA Live. “My poor mother is the least informed. She’s going to go with my aunts and they’re going to lose their minds. I told her she’s going to be mad. She will laugh and she’s going to love Margo Martindale and Isiah Whitlock Jr. and the dog. Not enough people talk about the dog, Rosette. She’ll love those parts, but she’ll close her eyes for a lot of it.”

Now your high scores can be extra high with the new Cocaine Bear video game, an 8-bit bender inspired by Pacman and the titular ursine hero.

In Cocaine Bear: The Rise of Pablo Escobear, your bear must navigate a maze and snack on unsuspecting humans. Your ability to keep raging depends on how much cocaine you ingest, and if you come down too far, the party’s over. Check it out through the official website.

Elizabeth Banks’ crazy upcoming film Cocaine Bear may be the start of a glorious cinematic universe. Thanks to a recent police discovery off the coast of New Zealand, Banks has confirmed interest in making a Cocaine Shark movie.
Earlier this week, police down under discovered more than three tons of cocaine floating in the Pacific Ocean as part of a drug-smuggling scheme. Naturally, the internet immediately began joking about sea animals discovering the drugs, since Cocaine Bear was inspired by a real black bear that got its paws on a bag of coke in a Georgia forest in 1985.
Banks herself heard the story, and she told People it could lend itself to something of a Cocaine Shark. “If there’s a great story, then sure,” the director said. “Jaws with cocaine, I don’t see how that loses.”

The trailer for Cocaine Bear has been released – and there’s a good chance it’ll be 2024’s wildest movie.
Announced in April, Cocaine Bear has prompted raised eyebrows due to its incredible premise that is, in fact, inspired by real-life events.
In September 1985, a 175lb black bear in north Georgia ingested a duffel bag of cocaine that convicted drug smuggler Andrew Thornton had abandoned.
The horror-comedy, which is directed by Pitch Perfect star Elizabeth Banks, sees the drug-fuelled animal then embark on a murderous rampage, which was not part of the true story.
In real life, the bear ingested the cocaine and subsequently overdosed. It was found three months later next to approximately 40 plastic containers of cocaine.
The first trailer for the film arrived on Thursday (1 December), prompting a number of reactions from fans – many of whom posted memes in response to the clip.

Earlier this week, social media lit up as users excitedly uploaded the poster for the Elizabeth Banks-directed Cocaine Bear, imagining what a movie with that title might be like. They got some idea today when Universal dropped the bonkers first trailer for the film “inspired by the true story of a drug runner’s 1985 plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it.” The movie, billed as a character-driven thriller, seems to have a good bit of fun with the premise.
The story involves an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500-pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a rampage for more blow…and blood.
In the course of things, the bear gulps down bricks of blow which seem to confer upon it drug-fueled superpowers. The beast gallops up a tree after one victim.

Elizabeth Banks' Cocaine Bear Has A Scene That's 'Mini Fast & Furious But One Of The Cars Is A Bear'
This post contains spoilers for a scene from the upcoming film "Cocaine Bear."
Like a drug-addled black bear, the first preview of Elizabeth Banks' "Cocaine Bear" has just been unleashed on the unsuspecting public, and the movie frankly looks like a wild ride. The red-band trailer for the Lord and Miller-produced film emphasizes the comedy angle of the story about a Kentucky black bear that accidentally ate hundreds of pounds of cocaine in the 1980s, but it also hints at the ferociousness of the titular character. The true story that inspired the movie isn't nearly as eventful as the version Banks and writer Jimmy Warden created, which is set to re-imagine the bear's misadventure as a coke-fueled killing spree.
/Film attended a premiere screening event for the film's trailer earlier this week, where Banks also shared a sneak peek at a full scene from the film. "When I read this sequence in the script,...

The official trailer is here for Elizabeth Banks’ latest directorial effort, the upcoming thriller “Cocaine Bear” from Universal Pictures, which is inspired by a true story. As the title suggests, the film follows a black bear that embarks on a murderous rampage following its unintentional consumption of cocaine.
The film stars Keri Russell, Margo Martindale, Ray Liotta, Alden Ehrenreich, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Kristofer Hivju, Kahyun Kim, Christian Convery, Brooklynn Prince and newcomer Scott Seiss. Bring on the coke bear!! Universal Pictures has revealed the first official trailer for an epic thriller called Cocaine Bear, based on an actual true story. This is landing in theaters everywhere in late February in just a few months. In a forest in Georgia, a giant 500-pound American black bear goes on a murderous rampage after unintentionally ingesting a lot of cocaine after a drug runner's plane crashes. The film follows a group of cops, criminals, tourists, and teens who try to find the furry drug addict and stop his mad fury. Cocaine Bear's full ensemble cast features Keri Russell, Margo Martindale, Ray Liotta, Alden Ehrenreich, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Kristofer Hivju, Kahyun Kim, Christian Convery, Brooklynn Prince, and Scott Seiss. This looks like it's going to be totally crazy and it sounds hilarious, but it's actually more thrilling than funny. Even with Lord & Miller producing it.

Universal Pictures will be giving director Elizabeth Banks’ “character-driven thriller” Cocaine Bear a theatrical release on February 24, 2023, and today the studio has unveiled a poster for the film. Several months later, a 175-pound black bear was found dead after devouring approximately 15 million worth of cocaine that had been dropped by Thornton.

Exclusive Update, 2:38 Pm: Two days after Starz made public its lack of faith in any more seasons of American Gods, producers Fremantle on Wednesday said the series based on Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed novel is still alive and kicking.
“Fremantle is committed to completing the epic journey that is American Gods, one of TV’s most inclusive series with the most amazing fans across the globe,” a spokesperson for the company told Deadline of a possible fourth season or more. “With Neil Gaiman and this fantastic cast and crew, we are exploring all options to continue to tell this magnificent story.”
The statement today backs remarks made Tuesday by EP Gaiman that the Ricky Whittle- and Ian McShane-led series wasn’t going quietly into the premium cable night.
Two early possibilities for more American Gods that may be coming into focus are Netflix and Amazon, we hear.
