Van Partible's animated series "Johnny Bravo" debuted on the Cartoon Network on July 14, 1997. It was one of four new shows that Cartoon Network premiered in 1997 and 1998 that served as a declaration for a new creator-forward direction the network was taking. "Johnny Bravo" debuted alongside Genndy Tartakovsky's "Dexter's Laboratory," David Feiss' "Cow and Chicken," and Craig McCracken's "The Powerpuff Girls." In 1999, that lineup would be complemented by "Ed, Edd n Eddy," and "Courage the Cowardly Dog." These shows were all quirky and idiosyncratic and attracted a generation of fans.
"Johnny Bravo" was about a barrel-chested, Elvis-voiced lug who lived with his mother and attempted to find love in the big city. His buffoonery and vanity, however, usually kept him single. Johnny was played by prolific voice actor Jeff Bennett, who has been acting professionally since 1991. Van Partible had been working on a version of the show as early...

The Lord of the Rings co-stars Elijah Wood and Sean Astin reunited onstage Saturday at the 2024 SAG Awards. And that’s where Wood learned about a missing trophy.
The two, who played hobbits Frodo and Sam in Peter Jackson’s Lotr movie trilogy, were on stage to present the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role. That went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her role in The Holdovers.
Before that, Wood and Astin remarked on time’s passing after a clip was played of Astin accepting the Best Film Ensemble win at the 2004 SAG Awards for The Lord Of the Rings: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King while noting the absence of fellow stars Wood and Viggo Mortensen.
“How’s it been 20 years?” Wood asked Astin, who replied, “It’s been 20 years and yet I’m sorry you couldn’t be there that night.

“We’re in the mood for a little vivisection.”
We’ve all heard the saying “less is more.” Marie Kondo championed this minimalist sentiment when convincing us to rid our homes of unwanted items and Coco Chanel lived by the rule of taking one accessory off before leaving the house. We’re not sure Peter Jackson has ever heard this saying as his films tend to be extravaganzas filled with lavish plotting, eccentric characters, and over-the-top effects. And we’re not mad about it. Years before he wowed the world with expansive adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and a mammoth remake of the 1933 classic King Kong, Jackson honed his delightful excesses in the horror genre culminating in the 1996 splatstick comedy The Frighteners.

Much like the immortal meme of Marie Kondo, I too love mess.
Ms. Kondo was a particular fan of messes she or others could clean up and cull down to manageable levels, and I suppose the same is true for my and the IndieWire TV team’s love of on-screen mess. There is a special recipe for lovable TV trainwreck which doesn’t include behind-the-scenes discomfort and drama, turgid storytelling, or unwatchable performances. The best bonkers TV should exist precisely on the border between pure satire and melodrama; it should be eminently watchable even at its worst — and its worst should also somehow be its best.
And, in the case of Apple’s “The Morning Show,” megawatt star power is a must.
The star-studded drama is back for its third season, more unhinged and senseless than ever before. And this is a good thing. “The Morning Show” was at its...

Peacock‘s The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning and Marie Kondo may have different approaches to organization, but both methods have the same goal: to streamline and simplify life.
Design consultant Marie Kondo burst onto the cultural scene in 2019. First with Tidying Up with Marie Kondo and then with Sparking Joy on Netflix. Both series aimed at decluttering the items that don’t “spark joy.” Along the same lines, Swedish Death Cleaning is also designed to declutter. But instead of sparking joy, the goal is to organize possessions before death.

Though Donald Trump is facing federal charges with his second indictment — of possibly more to come — he is still running for president, and has sworn up and down that he will remain in the race no matter what happens. For “The View” moderator Whoopi Goldberg, that’s a terrifying prospect — one that has her advocating for a new amendment to the Constitution.
To kick off Thursday’s Hot Topics discussion, the women of “The View” criticized Trump’s former VP, and current presidential hopeful, Mike Pence, along with other Republicans who have indicated that they would potentially pardon Trump. And, while the hosts were all unanimously disgusted by that idea, Whoopi admitted that “none of this makes any difference.”

As Donald Trump continues to try and claim he was within his rights to keep classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort, even amid being arraigned on federal charges that say otherwise, “The View” host Joy Behar can’t help but laugh. On Wednesday, she dragged the twice-indicted man’s latest defense as “the Marie Kondo defense.”
In case you missed it, following his arraignment on Tuesday, Trump spoke at his New Jersey golf club and once again tried to downplay the fact that he knowingly had several hundred classified documents in his possession, and refused to turn them over. According to Trump, “I hadn’t had a chance to go through all the boxes,” because “It’s a long tedious job…but I have a very busy life.”

Decluttering has become an industry in itself in recent years, with Hoarders prompting TV viewers to recoil in shock at the sight of dwellings stacked to the brim with stuff and Marie Kondo teaching readers The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Between rising interest rates, failing banks, a crypto winter and a stock market that is vacillating between bullish and bearish on a seemingly daily basis, money is top of mind for almost everyone these days.
Enter Netflix, which will release a new unscripted series next month seemingly made for this moment, taking a Marie Kondo approach to money.
Called How To Get Rich, the series will see author and financial adviser Ramit Sethi travel the country helping people master their finances. The show will debut its 8 episodes on Netflix on April 18. Yes, that’s Tax Day here in the U.S., a day when money will likely be top of mind for many people.
The series, based on Sethi’s 2009 book I Will Teach You To Be Rich, is from Studio Lambert, the producer of Undercover Boss and The Circle.

You would need a heart of stone to leave Rebecca Miller’s She Came to Me without wanting to pick up sticks and live on a tugboat, preferably one steered by Marisa Tomei.
Tomei’s tugboat captain Katrina, with her softly weathered face, earthy humor and somewhat sociopathic “love” addiction, is a simply fabulous romcom heroine, if She Came to Me can be described as a romcom. And in Peter Dinklage, at his most darkly glowering as the perpetually panic-stricken, creatively blocked composer Katrina targets with her romantic zeal, she has her perfect foil. Props to Berlin Film Festival artistic director Carlo Chatrian for nailing She Came to Me: light but pungent, it is a perfect opener.
Not that this is a two-horse show: in the screwball tradition, there is much more going on here than a middle-aged meet-cute. At the outset, Miller swings between the rarefied opulence of...

Marie Kondo has become the go-to expert for decluttering one’s home, thanks to her Netflix series “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” and “Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo”.
During a recent webinar promoting her new book, Marie Kondo’s Kurashi at Home: How to Organize Your Space and Achieve Your Ideal Life, Kondo admitted that since welcoming her third child with husband Takumi Kawahara, she’s taken on something of a “do as I say not as I do” approach when it comes to her own home.
“My home is messy, but the way I am spending my time is the right way for me at this time at this stage of my life,” she explained in Japanese through an interpreter, as reported by the Washington Post.

Marie Kondo delivered a shock to fans during a recent webinar to promote her latest book, “Marie Kondo’s Kurashi at Home: How to Organize Your Space and Achieve Your Ideal Life.” The decluttering queen is no longer tidying up as much after giving birth to her third son, or as Kondo put it, “My house is messy” (via The Washington Post).
Kondo became an international phenomenon in 2019 with the launch of her Netflix reality series “Tidying Up,” in which she helped people clean up their messy homes and declutter their spaces in an attempt to restore calmness and “spark joy” in their lives. While Kondo has long been devoted to decluttering “physical” spaces, her new book also stresses the importance of cleaning up mental and emotional spaces. Get out your magnifying glasses and dust off that notebook, because The Masked Singer is back to turn a nation of viewers into sofa detectives.
Helmed once again by comedian Joel Dommett, the unique competition shows 13 mystery celebrities singing familiar tunes on stage, while dressed up in a costume obscuring who they really are.
Guessing along with the in-studio audience and the viewers at home are the judges: Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross.
In the season’s first episode on New Year’s Day, Ghost was eliminated and was later revealed to be football star Chris Kamara.
Still, there’s a long season ahead, with plenty more costumes to be unmasked. Here’s a guide to the clues and guesses so far.

It's a new year and I'm sure we're all tired of Top 10 lists, but here's one more before we say adieu to 2022! My list makes no sense as a whole — there are major blockbusters and indies, films truly epic in scope and some that are more intimate fare. I took the Marie Kondo approach to this list — every film here brought me joy. Sometimes that joy was terrible joy, and sometimes it was light, fluffy, and cozy joy. I need both in my life, depending on how I'm feeling, and these films all helped keep me afloat through the past year.
Before I get to the final list, I want to give shout-outs to some who didn't make the Top 10, such as "Rrr", the cheeseburger from "The Menu," Robert Pattinson's emo Caped Crusader in "The Batman," and the bromance between Nic Cage and Pedro Pascal in "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

After the exuberance of the Cannes market in May and the disappointment that some experienced at Toronto, this week’s American Film Market is expected to settle into a much more familiar range.
If “new normal” is one of those phrases that has lost its meaning through overuse, the AFM this year is expected to operate at something approaching “near normal.”
“Cannes was an experiment for many folks. This is the market that people are coming to in order to do business. You can feel it in the way that we’re approaching it,” says Jean Prewitt.
“Everybody is still enthusiastic. And for problem areas, they’ll tell you that costs are going up. They’re not sure about whether or not they can have a theatrical release. But the rules are still the same. You have to have the quality of content and the talent. And somebody’s going to want to buy it.

Trevor Noah thinks that Donald Trump may need a bit of help getting Mar-a-Lago back in tip-top shape once the FBI finishes its investigation — and he knows the perfect person for the job.
“Over the weekend, we finally got a detailed rundown of what the FBI took away,” he said during Tuesday night’s episode of “The Daily Show.” “There were 31 documents labeled ‘confidential.’ There were 54 labeled ‘secret,’ and 18 labeled ‘top secret.’ Even better than that, agents found those documents intermingled in the same boxes as magazine clippings and clothing.”
He added: “So, I guess Trump has a legal problem and a hoarding problem. After the FBI is done with Trump, we need to send in Marie Kondo just to be like, ‘does this 1987 copy of Playboy spark joy Donald?'”

There's, of course, nothing funny about the shocking wave of state governments working to strip trans people of their rights. Why, then, was it a recent topic of conversation on the June 15 episode of Michelle Buteau and Jordan Carlos's comedy podcast "Adulting?" During the episode, recorded live (as some of "Adulting"'s installments are), guest Alok - a gender non-conforming writer - emotionally discussed some of the recent actions taken against supporting trans people in their home state of Texas. Alok mentioned their book, "Beyond the Gender Binary," is being targeted among publications the Texas Republican legislature wants to ban. Then, they followed up that harrowing fact with a joke about Marie Kondo's "Spark Joy" home tidying guide somehow being omitted from the ban list.

Someone call in Marie Kondo, because Big Brother‘s 24th season has gotten messy.
To be clear, I say that with the utmost appreciation for mess: Big Brother has been stuck in a predictable, let’s-vote-with-the-house rut for many seasons, and it’s a delight to see the opposite situation playing out here. But between Kyle’s ill-advised showmance with Alyssa, Nicole’s correct suspicion that most of The Leftovers are working together, and, of course, Daniel’s insane decision to use the Power of Veto and endanger his No. 1 ally, this week in the Bb house has been undeniably (and wonderfully) chaotic.

One year ago, the team behind NBC’s “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” was devastated when the broadcast network pulled the plug on the musical series after two seasons. At the time, the show’s cast, as well as creator Austin Winsberg, were vocal about how sad they were about the untimely end; after pitching it around and hoping for a pickup, it seemed to be dead in the water.
And then the Roku Channel came around and offered a chance to wrap it up in the shape of a movie; the two-hour holiday pic focused on the Clarke family’s first Christmas without patriarch Mitch (Peter Gallagher), who died at the end of the first season.
“We had ended Season 2 on a massive cliffhanger, but we had many new stories we still wanted to tell,” says Winsberg. “To be able to create a resolution, give the fans clarity and live with...

Watch out, Marie Kondo! Amy Poehler has a whole new take on tidying. Say goodbye to dust and unwanted belongings because Poehler will produce Peacock's upcoming unscripted series The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, E! News learned on April 8. The hourlong series—based on Swedish artist Margareta Magnusson's nonfiction book of the same name—is a makeover show based on the Swedish practice of döstädning, or death cleaning, where people declutter and get rid of unnecessary belongings. In each episode, a different homeowner will be visited by a Swedish Death Cleaner to help them organize their homes and uncover and undo decades of collecting. The...

“Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber,” Showtime’s limited series about Travis Kalanick’s period as CEO of the rideshare company, runs on a simple either-or proposition. Kalanick focused all of his energies on the success of the corporation he ran, at the expense of his employees’ well-being and physical safety, as well as of ethics, labor practices and the law. This made him either a terrible boss or — as he sees it — the optimal one.
That this question is so easily answered accounts for why “Super Pumped” is such a punishing watch. Kalanick’s delusions and shortfalls as a manager were all explored in journalist Mike Isaac’s book of the same name, the source material for this series. While Uber was phenomenally successful at transforming the economy and bringing to heel local taxi services, Kalanick himself resigned from the company, amid scandal, in 2017. Here, those delusions and shortfalls...

The success of Knives Out and Murder on the Orient Express has led to a full-throated return of the keep-em-guessing murder mystery
Surprise is not much of a factor in Death on the Nile, Kenneth Branagh’s second gaudy, glossy all-star adaptation of an Agatha Christie chestnut. As with its predecessor, 2017’s marginally worse Murder on the Orient Express, this old-school mystery pulls from a source text so well-known that its twists have practically become embedded genre tropes; even if you don’t know the oft-told story, you can guess your way through it on cliches and character types alone.
Decked out with chintzy CGI, stiff performances and enough processed cheese to fill the Nile, it’s not exactly a good film – even “proficient” feels like a stretch – but it is an oddly comforting one. Watching Branagh’s absurdly moustachioed Hercule Poirot waddle through the motions of supposedly expert crime-solving – as bloodied,...

Late in “The Starling,” at a stage when Melissa McCarthy’s grieving mother has never felt more distant from her withdrawn husband, she receives a pep talk from Kevin Kline’s wise confidante about the titular bird. When starlings mate, he explains, they build and protect their nest together: “They’re just not meant to exist in the world alone.” “Real subtle stuff,” she responds, with a trademark McCarthy grimace.
It’s a bit rich at this point for “The Starling” to lampshade such a cornily obvious metaphor, given that Theodore Melfi’s film has already given us ample scenes of McCarthy’s character growing and nurturing a vegetable garden from scratch on dried-out, weed-strewn land, defending it from the aforementioned starlings as they themselves forge a home of their own from scraps and trash, and cathartically ridding her house of all its furniture for good measure. What could it all mean?...

“Disappearing” is the sound of anticipating, hoping, and wanting perpetually. There is no resolution in the song, no broad smile and a hardy “That’s all folks.” It’s simply three-and-a-half minutes of throbbing, unrequited yearning, Low at their very best, and it is beautiful.

Netflix and Gold House have created a partnership called “Netflix Gold” to amplify Api stories, artists, and creators.
The partnership marks an evolution for the nonprofit collective of Asian and Pacific Islander (Api) cultural leaders behind Gold House. By expanding their support beyond films for Asian audiences, Gold House will work closely with Netflix to amplify all culturally relevant stories and will engage the Api community through private and public experiences to celebrate diverse, multidimensional storytelling.
The first “Netflix Gold” event will be the premiere of Season 2 of “Never Have I Ever,” which will bring the Gold House community together for the first time in Los Angeles since the pandemic to get a sneak peek at the season, enjoy South Asian food and culture, highlight small businesses and celebrate intersectional South Asian stories.
The two organizations previously partnered on films such as “The White Tiger,” “Over The Moon” and “The Half Of It.

“Made for Love” showrunner Christina Lee usually prefers to write at coffee shops in her Los Angeles neighborhood because at home “there’s always some laundry to fold or toys to put away or a bed to lie down on,” she says with a laugh. So, adjusting to working from home during the Covid-19 pandemic meant making big changes to her space to help her focus.
“I Marie Kondo-ed my office,” she says. “I’m someone who doesn’t like a lot of clutter to begin with, but when you have a husband, a kid, cats, that’s not always up to you. So, I made my office my sanctuary, and I got rid of anything that wasn’t 100% necessary and didn’t, as she would say, spark joy. Usually I only need my laptop or some Post-Its, so what’s in here is [here] to put me in a good headspace.

There was an argument to be made that the now-mononymous comedy star Ziwe was among the best television performers of 2020 — even though her existing outside television was what had made her a star. Ziwe’s Instagram Live series, in which she delivered startlingly direct interviews with internet stars and comedian peers about race, made fascinating use of the platform’s split-screen technology. On the screen’s bottom half, the guest squirmed and dissembled; Ziwe, eyes glinting in triumph as she went in for the kill, was on top. The magic of her performance lay in the degree to which Ziwe shifted her energy — she could go, in a moment, from benevolently trying to work out issues together with her guest to exposing weaknesses in their thinking, and back again.
Her act had a kinetic, unrehearsed energy that both seemed perfectly unified with its format and seemed to demand a promotion.
