Revenge director Coralie Fargeat’s new body horror satire, The Substance, screened at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend, and the reactions have been (mostly) very positive - although it sounds like the movie has its share of shocking moments.
The film focuses on an acclaimed actress turned celebrity host of a daytime exercise program (Demi Moore) who gets replaced by a younger star (Margaret Qualley), sparking a confrontation between the two women that ultimately turns violent.
The Substance reportedly features some pretty extreme gore, but the scene that's sparked the most discussion is a brutal fight between Moore and Qualley's characters - complete with graphic, full-frontal nudity.
“I had someone who was a great partner,” said Moore of her co-star. “We were obviously quite close at some moments… and naked. But there was also a levity [in shooting those scenes].”
Moore also noted that the film “pushed me out of the comfort zone,...

Francis Ford Coppola's self-funded passion-project, Megalopolis, screened at the Cannes Film Festival last night, and the first reviews for the sci-fi epic have now been shared online.
Depending on which critics you choose to trust, the movie is either a masterpiece, an unmitigated disaster, or somewhere in between!
Despite reports of audiences giving the film a 10-minute standing ovation, reviews have been decidedly mixed, which is represented by an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 50%.
Only 22 verdicts have been added so far, so this score is sure to change when press screening take place down the line. But with such a polarizing reaction, we don't anticipate it fluctuating too much.
Have a read through some of the reviews at the links below.
#Megalopolis Review: "It's not likely to go down as one of the more incisive responses to our bitterly polarized political landscape. Nor does it ever quite settle on a uniform tone,...

On November 22, 2023, Netflix brings the love story of Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre to the big screen in “Maestro,” starring Oscar nominees Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan. Cooper proves to be a formidable triple-threat after co-writing and directing the film to rave reviews and a Cultural Icon and Creator Award at this year’s Gothams.
The complicated romance between the legendary composer and the actress is an across-the-board contender in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds, with Rotten Tomatoes rating it 81% fresh. The consensus from critics reads, “Led by a pair of powerful performances, ‘Maestro’ serves as a stirring overview of a tremendous talent’s life and legacy.” Read our full review round-up below.

Director David Fincher debuted his first film in three years Sunday at the Venice Film Festival and the results are rapturous, if a bit muted.
“The Killer” tells the story of a hitman (Michael Fassbender) dealing with a botched job. As TheWrap’s Ben Croll said in his review, “The Killer” is “like a sideways follow-up to ‘The Social Network’ than anything else.” That cold formalism is being pointed out in several top critics reviews, with Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri saying, “David Fincher’s The Killer seems to be about its own pointlessness.”
Croll explained in his review that “For all the wit and satirical shadings, “The Killer” gets down to business with ruthless efficiency. Like new installments in an ongoing series, the film is split into chapters, each set in a new locale, each named for a new target, and each playing up a slightly different set of skills.

The review embargo for David Fincher’s latest, the hitman thriller The Killer, has broken at Venice. So far, the film is earning mixed-to-positive reviews for what’s being seen as a less divisive movie than his last film, Mank, which perhaps struck some as a little too inside Hollywood (for the record – we loved it here at JoBlo). By contrast, this is supposedly a lean and mean movie that follows Michael Fassbender’s titular character as he tries to figure out why a contract has been put out on him. It’s based on a graphic novel by Alexis Solent. It marks Fincher’s first credited collaboration with screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker since Se7en (although he did an uncredited rewrite of Fight Club in ’99).

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” held preview screenings and had its Hollywood premiere on Thursday, and that means the reactions are pouring in.
And it’s a given that so far, those who saw it tonight mostly loved it. Attendees in screenings on the east coast or in the central time zones got out first — as we write this, the Hollywood premiere screening is currently about halfway through — so we’ll start with them.
Film critic Bob Chipman calls it “easily the best of the trilogy and a top 5 Marvel Movie,” and he also posits that director James Gunn’s new bosses at Warner. Bros. have to be happy with that decision after seeing this.
Writer Mike Ryan said Gunn “bet the house” on the film, “and won,” and praised how it exists as a sci-fi action film as opposed to another Super Hero joint.
But there was some rumblings of dissent.

On February 24, 2023, Universal released “Cocaine Bear,” Elizabeth Banks‘ comedy-horror flick that raked in $22 million its opening weekend. An oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converge on a Georgia forest where a huge black bear goes on a murderous rampage after unintentionally ingesting cocaine. The film, which currently holds a score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, has garnered generally positive reviews.
The critics consensus reads, “Despite Cocaine Bear‘s half-baked plot and uneven acting, the titular fur fiend’s scene-snorting frenzy will give B-movie enthusiasts a contact high.” The ensemble cast (beyond VFX-driven “Cokey” the bear) includes Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery, Alden Ehrenreich, Brooklynn Prince, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Margo Martindale and the late Ray Liotta. Read our review roundup below.
