Hazbin Hotel’s Musical Storytelling
This….. Is musical storytelling at its finest. Spawning from a 2019 viral YouTube pilot, A24, Amazon Prime, and creator Vivienne Medrano’s Hazbin Hotel has quickly proven itself to be a massive success; boasting the largest global debut for an animated series on Prime Video….. Ever and scoring rave reviews from both critics and audiences, with Decider’s Raven Brunner praising the “queer, raunchy, and fun” animated series for its “exciting character arcs” and “thrilling story.”
Indeed, one doesn’t have to look too hard at Hazbin Hotel’s unique animation and art style, shockingly dense plot and lore, and unabashedly vulgar sense of humor to see why it’s amassed such a large audience so quickly.

At the end of 2022, I was given the Goliath task of explaining to our readers (and much of our staff) why the internet had gone completely feral over the animated design of the Devil Daddy himself, Lucifer Morningstar, on "Hazbin Hotel." Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano debuted the animated musical pilot for "Hazbin Hotel" on YouTube in 2019, funded entirely by Medrano's Patreon followers and brought to life completely by freelance animators. It quickly went viral and generated a diehard fanbase, one that exists on the fringes of fandom circles and well outside of four-quadrant entertainment.
It's adult animation, but too edgy for the constraints of something like "The Simpsons." It's as raunchy as "South Park," but caters to a queerer audience base. [This story contains mild spoilers for season one of Hazbin Hotel.]
“On paper, there’s a lot of people that might say no to something like this — a very raunchy animated musical comedy world written by a young woman,” Hazbin Hotel star Stephanie Beatriz tells The Hollywood Reporter. But for the Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Encanto actress, showrunner Vivienne Medrano’s “weird, cool, fantastical imagination” has produced a series that is not only “delightfully horny, unhinged and ridiculous,” but uniquely special beyond its “small minutiae of cock jokes.
“It somehow manages to have this throughline of true gay love and this very big idea about whether it’s possible to redeem a soul, to change after being damned for all time,” she says of A24’s first foray into animation and Prime Video’s latest push into the medium’s R-rated adult space. “I just love Vivienne’s world-building.”
Broadway star and lead voice actress Erika Henningsen offers similar praise.

One of the most exciting new animated series this year is Hazbin Hotel, a Prime Video series from Vivienne Medrano that tells the surreal tale of Charlie Morningstar (voiced by Erika Henningsen), the princess of Hell, who tires of an annual purge whereby angels descend from Heaven to smite demons, and, along with her girlfriend Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz), creates the Hazbin Hotel — a rehab clinic of sorts for those in Hell so that they can gain entry into the Kingdom of Heaven.

Hazbin Hotel, the first foray into animation for award-winning studio A24, is actually not new, despite having debuted on Prime Video just last Friday.
The R-rated musical comedy originated online as a 30-minute pilot in 2019 and quickly won over a fanbase that has largely stuck by it since its self-funded days. The series follows princess of Hell Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen), who in an attempt to stop the angels from murderously purging her demonic subjects, opens a hotel to help rehabilitate them. The goal: Turn these sinners into saints unable to be wiped out by the (unsettlingly terrifying) angels.
She’s joined — in certain cases against their will — by friends, funders and her father (that’s Lucifer voiced by Jeremy Jordan). That includes Charlie’s grounded girlfriend Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz); exasperated bartender Husk (Keith David); sex worker and rehabilitation Guinea pig Anthony “Angel Dust” (Blake Roman); Alastor the “Radio Demon...

It’s check-in time at “Hazbin Hotel,” where there are always vacancies but where Charlie, princess of Hell, is making sure you leave your baggage behind. Led by Broadway star Erika Henningsen (“Mean Girls”) and a voice ensemble of stage and screen stars such as Stephanie Beatriz, Keith David, Kimiko Glenn, Darren Criss, and more, the adult animated musical comedy follows Charlie in her noble (and perhaps impossible) goal of rehabilitating demons to peacefully reduce overpopulation in her kingdom, whether they like it or not. The eight-episode first season of “Hazbin Hotel” will premiere on Prime Video on Friday, Jan. 19. You can watch Hazbin Hotel: Season 1 with a 30-Day Free Trial of Amazon Prime Video.

The 2024 movie musical reimagining of "Mean Girls" restores a missing puzzle piece in the original film. Penned by Tina Fey and directed by Mark Waters, the original "Mean Girls" is a cautionary tale about the corrosive effects of cliques. Having grown up homeschooled, Cady (Lindsay Lohan) is figuring out how to survive in the jungle of a Chicago public high school. She befriends two outcasts, Janis (Lizzy Caplan) and Damian (Daniel Franzese), who recruit her to infiltrate the Plastics, a pink-clad clique of popular girls ruled by Queen Bee Regina George (Rachel McAdams). Cady finds herself allured by Regina's seemingly titanic confidence -- that is, until Regina steals Cady's crush, locking the two teens in a vicious cycle of revenge.
Eventually, these incidents come to a boil when Regina is accidentally hit by a bus. When a recuperating Regina attends the Spring Fling,...

At Hazbin Hotel, creatures of the underworld can set aside their taste for blood, violence and depravity of a sexual nature for a chance at salvation in the first trailer for the Prime Video animated series.

ABC is passing on its pilots.
The network has passed on Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.
ABC Signature is, however, planning to shop The Hurt Unit to other networks and platforms, while 20th Television will be shopping Public Defenders and Judgement.
The move comes as it still has decisions to make on series Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, which was a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.
Last month, ABC handed a series order to Drew Goddard’s pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson. The project, which is based on the popular French detective series Hip, was the clear front-runner all development season.

If broadcast Pilot Season is any indicator, the Peak TV numbers are in for a rude awakening.
A decade ago, ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC collectively ordered an eye-popping 98 comedies and dramas during Pilot Season 2013. That figure, the most since THR began tracking overall volume in 2012, is now considered a relic of the past.
With the Covid-19 pandemic effectively wiping out Pilot Season 2020, the networks were forced to lean into the year-round programming strategy many had discussed but hadn’t really executed. Now, the shift is in full swing as the overall volume of pilots ordered across the five networks is likely to hit another low after they collectively picked up 35 comedies and dramas last season.
What’s more, the economic downturn has also prompted broadcasters to be more selective in how many scripts they buy and which among those will actually get made. Network executives — including new presidents at CBS,...

“Girls5eva” has been renewed for Season 3, but the comedy series will be moving to Netflix from Peacock for its next outing.
Variety has learned that Netflix will be the exclusive streaming home for Season 3, while sharing Seasons 1 and 2 with Peacock. The show, which follows the surviving members of a one-hit wonder girls group from the 1990s as they reunite in the present, aired its second season finale on Peacock beginning in June.
The move marks a homecoming of sorts for “Girls5eva” creator Meredith Scardino and executive producers Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, and Jeff Richmond. Netflix previously aired the series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” which was co-created by Fey and Carlock, with Scardino serving as a writer and eventually co-executive producer and Richmond serving as composer and executive producer.

After serving as cinematographer on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” John Inwood is no stranger to the Tina Fey and Robert Carlock comedy style: dense with jokes and quick cuts to flashbacks, fantasies and parodies, and there was the occasional musical number. But “Girls5eva,” created by former “Kimmy” writer Meredith Scardino and produced by Fey and Carlock, took it to the next level, following the titular girl group that reunites 20 years later for another go.
“It’s a lot of fun with this show because we have a very good TV family that’s been working together for many years,” Inwood tells Gold Derby (watch above). “Season 1 was a lot of fun and very challenging. Every time you do a first season, you’re learning how to make the show, you’re defining what the style of the show and you get better and better at it.”

Hardly a minute goes by on “Girls5Eva” without at least three jokes sharper than some comedies manage in an entire episode. And yet, the funniest moment of the Season 2 premiere (“Album Mode”) is a series of nonsensical words sung over a single close-up on a person struggling to remain on this earthly plane. In this moment, Paula Pell doesn’t actually say a word — but she doesn’t have to in order to steal this scene and most every other that follows.
In its second season, which premiered May 5 on Peacock, Meredith Scardino’s quick-witted comedy explores the “what now?” stage of aging girl group members Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry), Summer (Busy Philipps), and Gloria (Pell) trying to make it on their own terms decades after Girls5Eva first became one-hit wonders. Paramount has hired the filmmakers, who are married, to direct the movie adaptation of “Mean Girls: The Musical.” The upcoming version isn’t a remake of Tina Fey’s 2004 modern cult classic — about cliquey high schoolers for whom the limit does not exist — but rather a cinematic take of the song-and-dance version that opened on Broadway in 2018.

Judging from her historically impressive line-up of pop clients choreographer James Alsop is more than game for a challenge. But the Peacock comedy Girls5Eva presented a singular challenge: crafting believable routines for a fictitious girl group coming out of obscurity after a peak in the 1990s.
“Please forgive me for name-dropping, but it absolutely rings true to having worked with Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams”, says Alsop, referring to how female pop groups were often treated as cogs in a machine, which the show frequently and satirically depicts. “They’re so amazing. To see how this show really shines a light on what it was like to be in a group like that, now I completely understand why they recorded “Independent Women”.

Peacock’s “Girls5Eva” is a joy to watch. The series, focused on four women who were part of a ’90s girl group reuniting as forty-somethings, is perfect for anyone who grew up idolizing the pop stars of the era. But for the cast and its creator, it was an opportunity to talk about a variety of feminist topics that weren’t exactly addressed during that time period.
Series creator Meredith Scardino wanted to dive into two places she was exploring in her life. She was creatively drawn to situations that require strangers to be thrown together, and at the same time she noticed the reunions of numerous groups from the 1990s and 2000s, like the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys. The ideas started clicking from there, with Scardino seeing the landscape of music as fertile territory to talk about being a woman — as opposed to being a teenager when you...

Peacock has had a rough time with their original content. Outside of their nostalgic reboot of “Saved By the Bell,” the rest of Peacock’s original slate has failed to entice audiences — but that should change with the premiere of “Girls5Eva.” Though peddling in a similar sense of nostalgia — our collective love of girl groups and ’90s/early ’00s music — what creator Meredith Scardino does is tell a hilarious, boppy story of growing up but still desiring the comfort of the past.

Mean Girls won’t be back when Broadway reopens, producers announced today. The musical based on Tina Fey’s 2004 film suspended production when Broadway went dark due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The musical, with a book by Fey, music by Jeff Richmond, lyrics by Nell Benjamin and direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw, opened on Broadway in 2018 and grossed $124 million by the time it close in March.
