When the opening scene ended with a pretty cool and gory death, in what was a traditional but fun slasher film build-up, my hopes were kind of high. It feels like we have had very few new slasher movie villains to get excited about. Of course, Michael Myers, Chucky, Ghostface and more are still going strong but other than Art the Clown in the Terrifier franchise, no one seems to have lasted for more than one movie in more recent times. So when Randy Couture is standing tall as Hank, giant axe in hand, things were looking up. But the movie doesn’t quite pan out the way I was expecting.
The Bell Keeper follows a group of friends, including two brothers, who travel to a campsite at Lake Bell.

The Bell Keeper opens on a reasonably strong note for what appears to be an indie slasher. An axe-wielding figure, we’ll later find out his name is Hank, dispatches a pair of victims and adds their driver’s licenses to the collection on his cabin wall. The only as to why, “You shouldn’t have rung the bell”.
This happens at Lake Bell which, as the newspaper headlines under the credits tell us, has a long and evil reputation that includes lots of brutal deaths and mysterious disappearances. So of course filmmakers Gabriel, and Matthew want to make a documentary about it.
So they, along with their girlfriends Megan, Holly, and Liam Matt’s little brother who happens to own a camper,...

"You shouldn't have rang the bell!" Screen Media has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled The Bell Keeper, the latest from young filmmaker Colton Tran. It's heading to VOD in October, yet another new horror film releasing during Halloween Season. A group of friends travel out to a campsite with a mysterious bell that summons a murderer if you ring it at midnight. Their plan to debunk the myth and film a documentary goes awry as they discover that the truth is stranger – and far more frightening – than fiction. What they find is something much more sinister than they could have ever imagined... Starring Randy Couture, Kathleen Kenny, Reid Miller, Chaz Bono, Bonnie Aarons, and Mike Manning. Yeah it looks as bad as it sounds. This used to be the kind of direct-to-bargain-bin crap we'd all laugh at. My guess: they'll turn into demons, Couture is just slaying the demons.

Eva Maria Daniels, the Icelandic producer and film festival favorite behind such recent indie dramas as What Maisie Knew, Hold the Dark and Joe Bell, has died. She was 43.
Daniels died June 30 in London after a battle with cancer, her friend and publicist Jessie Cohen told The Hollywood Reporter. She was diagnosed in March 2020 with a type of Stage 3 cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes, but she declared herself cancer free in an interview with THR‘s Chris Gardner a year later.
“Eva died on the same terms as she lived,” director Börkur Sigthorsson wrote on Facebook. “She played her cards close to her chest. She didn’t seek recognition when she had success. She didn’t seek pity when she suffered. I will miss her friendship greatly, but mostly I will miss seeing what she would have done next.”
Daniels most recently executive produced the Sydney Sweeney-starring Reality.

Accused is a pivotal show during a pivotal time. Accused Season 1 Episode 3 confirms that this show is more than a legal drama; it is also a testament to the fragility of our mental health.
On Episode 3, we meet a family on the precipice of their lives changing forever. We see a mother in hospice with two young sons who love her and are passionately devoted to her quality of life.
Grief doesn't begin with death; it often starts when the knowledge of the upcoming loss is realized. This is why most bereaved families so profoundly treasure hospice workers.
Allison, the hospice nurse, seems likable. She seems attentive to his mother, but Danny never entirely trusts her intentions. And initially, there is no reason for his apparent derision.
Danny's demeanor and interaction with his mother show a soft, loving teenager, but his gaze, countenance, and demeanor changes when he speaks to the nurse,...

In the trailer, which you can watch above, Condor’s Erika and her friend Gia (Zoe Margaret Colletti) realize they’re about to leave high school with not a whole lot of memories to show for it. They decide they can’t walk across the stage without having “some real fun.”

In January 2013, a gay 15-year-old named Jadin Bell, from La Grande, Oregon, hanged himself from a piece of playground equipment and, after being kept on life support for several weeks, died in early February that year. He was a sophomore in high school. He’d dreamed of becoming an artist, of going to New York City for college — of, at the very least, getting the hell out of La Grande. Like many queer teens before him and, it’s painful to say, many since his death, Jadin was subject to...

The opening credits of "Joe Bell" point out that the film is based on a true story, but it might be best to go into it not knowing too much about that story.
That's not because the film from director Reinaldo Marcus Green ("Monsters and Men") in any way betrays the real events, or even distorts them too much -- on the whole, the drama written by Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry tries hard to do justice to Joe Bell, an Oregon man who in 2013 set out to walk across the United States to bring attention to bullying after his son, Jadin, was mercilessly mocked and bullied for being gay.
But "Joe Bell," which premiered at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival under the title "Good Joe Bell" but received a new edit before its July 2021 release from Roadside Attractions, takes some twists and turns along the way -- and it...

The film is based on an infamous true story, as Joe Bell was a man who walked across the country, stopping along the way at various high schools and venues to talk about bullying. Bell took on this conviction because his sensitive and gay son Jadin (Reid Miller) was constantly harassed at his school … amazingly, this went down in 2013. The struggles of working class Joe Bell in accepting his son is the hidden struggles that a lot of families Still go through.

This time of year is often thought of as a perfect time for strengthening family bonds. And now this new Summer flick explores this, an “inspired by true events” tale of a father and son, who seem to have little in common aside from DNA. So, are they trying connect via a sport like baseball, or perhaps working on a house or on restoring an old car? No, they’re taking a trip across the USA…the long way…on foot. Of course, there’s more to this journey than leisurely taking in the site from ground level. No, it’s more of a mission to stand up to the forces of ignorance and intolerance, That’s the plan of this story’s weary patriarch, a simple small-town fella’ named Joe Bell.
As this story begins, we’re right alongside Joe (Mark Wahlberg) as he’s pulling a cart that holds his tent,...

Reinaldo Marcus Green directed 2020 TIFF world premiere.
Roadside Attractions has acquired the Mark Wahlberg true-life drama Joe Bell and will release exclusively in cinemas on July 23, with Vertical Entertainment on board for a post-theatrical digital release.
Solstice has exited the project after acquiring it following the world premiere at Toronto last year. It had been lining up what would have been its second North American release after Unhinged.
However Solstice’s business plan of releasing on more than 2,000 screens was deemed not to be viable at a time when exhibition is returning from the pandemic, and the filmmakers preferred a slower roll-out.

Solstice Studios has now exited the project, and the film will get a slower rollout beginning with 750 theaters. Vertical Entertainment has also come aboard to handle the film’s post-theatrical digital release.

Exclusive: Joe Bell, the drama that stars Mark Wahlberg as a father who walks across America to honor his bullied gay son, is doing some more traveling. The film has been acquired for theatrical release by Roadside Attractions, with Vertical Entertainment aboard for a post-theatrical digital release. It opens July 23.
Joe Bell made its world premiere at virtual Toronto 2020, at which time it was acquired by Solstice Studios in a $20 million worldwide rights deal. I’d heard that Solstice might exit, and it has. That company, which released its first film in the Russell Crowe-directed Unhinged, is constructed to do theatrical releases of 2,000 screens and up. The pandemic, and the film’s subject matter, seem better served with a slower rollout, and Joe Bell now will begin on about 750 screens and build upward from there. The deal was negotiated by Roadside’s Howard Cohen, Vertical’s Peter Jarowey and Endeavor Content.
